I just switched back to ATT from Sprint (Evo 4g) and bought the Inspire with the intent of returning it next month when the Atrix comes out.
I seem to, however, really like the Inspire and am wondering if the Atrix is really worth the additional $100. Besides the higher res (yet smaller) screen, why would I change to the Atrix? Sure it has a dual core Tegra2, but Froyo doesn't even use 2 cores so what am I getting?
I know that the Atrix has a locked bootloader but that isn't a huge dealbreaker for me.
Thoughts?

Honestly I can't say I'm a fan of pentile screens like the Atrix has. Not to mention I read somewhere(cannot verify accuracy)that the Dalvik VM system on Froyo at the very least does not support multithreading so a dual core won't make any difference yet.
Plus, I have had bad experiences with Moto. I'm pretty happy with HTC so far.
Apps built with the NDK can take advantage of the dual core processor. The processor, resolution, ffc, hdmi, and 1080p recording all sound great, but software is more important to me. The Captivate tought me that. Great hardware doesn't mean crap if the software sucks. Sense is a lot better than Motoblur and the locked bootloader downright sucks. HTC is also slightly better about updating their software. Oh, and the dock and laptop are a complete ripoff.

I really Like HTC to. Don't really care about Sense since I use Launcher Pro. I guess its a matter of wait and see.

I just did the exact same thing, still waiting for the inspire to arrive though. I came from the Evo and I love HTC products, I think I'll keep it afterall and wait for the next HTC flagship phone.
The Atrix is more future proof than the Inspire with dual core and a gig of ram. Froyo may not take full advantage of dual core, but how about future builds? Gaming will certainly be smoother and with that huge battery I should be able to get through a day of heavy usage. I can't seem to do that with my Inspire unless I turn off most of the things I like about the phone. It's a tough choice, but blur doesn't bother me so I may make the jump.

Quoted for troof. HTC is the manufacturer who seems to get it right.
It looks like the difference that the inspire has a .3 inch bigger/lower resolution screen screen, 8GB less memory, higher MP camera (8MP), has digital compass, has HTC sence (maybe better than momto blur?), has fm radio.
I guess it just depends on what features are important to you. My only real question is about the insire's FM radio. Is it actually functioning out of the box or did att disable it?
Go over to the development threads and check out all of the Roms for the Inspire. Then immediately leave because the Atrix will never have that good of a development community. Crippled software on overpowered hardware will never be as good as quality/variety of software on perfectly capable hardware. Dual core isn't standard yet and the benefits of it have yet to be implemented effectively. When we're running custom roms of the next Android update with an optimized kernel, the Atrix will be stuck waiting for an official update with nothing more than a glorified theme.

I just exchanged my Atrix for an Inspire yesterday.
After rooting and unlocking, adding CM7 and the 1.8Ghz kernel, I can say with 100% confidence that I made the right choice switching.
Although the screen on the Inspire is lower resolution, it looks amazing, much more so than that of the Atrix.
I think everyone over there in the Atrix forum is coming to the conclusion that their phones will probably never see an unlocked bootloader, and are jumping ship because of it.

^This.....I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks so. I think the Atrix display looks horrible. I continually ponder how more people don't make mention of it. I came from a Captivate (which I still have) and the Inspire before I tried the Atrix and its quality leaves A LOT to be desired.
I still have both devices. And I had decided to return the atrix once or twice but cannot pull the trigger because of the hardware. Everything else, is better on the inspire. I feel like I have to force myself to like the Atrix. I've given it a try (a day's run) and each time I went back to the inspire. Hm, I'll see how it plays out.
Via the XDA app for the HTC Inspire
I am extremely confident with my decision to get the inspire. I love the screen and man this thing is fast. Even though the atrix has better specs I really think that the inspire, once rooted and oc'ed is way faster. I pop in to the atrix forums once in a while and it just solidifies my confidence that I got the right phone. Everyone over there is complaining about one thing or another, which wouldnt be that big of deal because Android is so customizable, but that isnt the case with MOTO because of the locked bootloader. Also who really wants to have to wait for official updates? Especially from companies like MOTO and Samsung. I am happy.

Depends what you are looking for. If you are looking for a phone that under-performs but looks great on a stat sheet - Atrix is for you. I had nothing but hate for that phone after just 3 days of using it. Its sluggish, the UI is clunky, animations were horribly slow.
Inspire has a far better screen believe it or not. It has no pixelation that I can even see (atrix had a ton) and the colors are far far far more accurate. The atrix couldnt even do the color yellow.
Atrix - 2/10 stars
Inspire - 9/10
So far on the att website users averaged give both phones 4 out of 5. I have weighed the pros and cons after playing with both of them for about an hour and believe I will go with the inspire for its 4.3 inch screen, faster and more accurate acquisition of GPS during my tests, 8MP camera, FM radio and good old HTC hardware.
I did notice an issue with the inspire that I was playing with where the pull down screen that shows running or recently launched programs was slow to drag left and right. Anyone else notice this?

Using RCMixHD and have no issue with this, its super slick and smooth.
You might want to take the custom Rom route anyways to maximize the performance and features of the phone.

had atrix for 3 days and for all 3 days tried to full my self i like the phone... nope didnt work. second day into.. dead pixels exchanged to find screen off to the left and actually twisted another one and the same problem, overall the qhd screen is horrible just go ahead and search something in google and look at the smaller text you'll see the pixels are missing . motorola screwed this one completely ; the phone really feels like was put together in some tiny village in 3th world country. side by side inspire feels smoother faster ( ain't no joke) and with iphone build quality.the last feature got my girlfriends attention and trust me she's one of this iphone4 owners that no matter what point you'll make that makes android shine vs iphone she'll tell ya i don't care. and i dont care if the atrix is better with games , pointless feature if u ask me... ill stick with my ps3 for real gaming experience. would be nice to have hdmi out and louder speaker otherwise thats pretty much what's missing. inspire much better phone.
Ok. I have had the inspire since it came out and I think its a huge upgrade from the captivate. My question is, for another $50 should I go to the Atrix?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
For another 50? It will cost me 100 more plus the 35.00 restoring fee. And I'm buying one today to compare to my inspire. I love the inspire but the atrix also looks nice so going to see which one I keep. The inspire screen looks much bigger than the 4.0 on the atrix, I have to see if it will make a difference web browsing n watching movies.
I'm keeping both for a while. Absolutely love the inspire, but those specs on the atrix are just too irresistible.
Yeah with an available upgrade you can get an atrix for $149 from radioshack. I went from a cappy to a surround to a focus (wp7 needs alot of work) to an inspire. I love it but the screen has some touch issues and it has locked up on me a few times. So I am a little concerned about that. Plus dual core is hard for a nerd like me to ignore.

I know dual core, but will the Atrix be LTE compatible?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I loved the atrix at first. Then I tried my inspire. For me at least Android without htc sense just feels like something is missing. I came from a nexus one to nexus s to iPhone 4 and now to my inspire. The atrix seems like As close as you'll get to a pure Google experience on at&t at least. I'm tempted to check one out only because of the awesome screen and hdmi out. But thats bot enough to make me switch from my sense to motoblur. That's the deal breaker for me... if only the inspire had a fingerprint reader
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
That is a very good point about LTE. It may be a monster of a phone but there is definitely no LTE support that I have read about. From my understanding AT&T will be putting out LTE phones this year but not for a while.
Also good to know about motoblur. I am a huge, HUGE, fan of Sense. I came from samsung's horrible touchwiz so sense has completely restored my faith in android. I have read several reviews that were not to keen on motoblur and I don't want to get caught up in constant rom flashing like I was with the captivate. Seems like everyday i was flashing a new rom and that just got old.
Either way, I will never go back to the iPhone. Not unless they make major improvements to their OS. But thats for another thread.
unless I am mistaking the Inspire doesn't have LTE support either, right?
Inspire might not be LTE compatible either, but It's half the price and had a bigger screen.

Yeah, I loathe motoblur. I just got the atrix and I hate it as much as everyone else that I've read. The first thing I'm doing is loading on ADW Ex....
And sense is amazing. It should be the standard on android.
Just came from an AT&T store to handle the Atrix and the 1st impression was WOW, small screen, maybe because there's hardly any bezel it makes the screen seem dwarfish. When I placed it alongside the Inspire it was noticeably smaller. I honestly don't know if I can downgrade in screen size.

I noticed this too.....what a difference from the inspire.....hard to believe the difference is only .3 inches
I just checked the Atrix at my friendly ATT shop, and I'm not sold to exchange my inspire for the Atrix. Colors seem better on the inspire, but the whites look whiter on the Atrix. Quadrant and nenamark1 were amazingly faster on the Atrix. I also checked the laptop dock and I was not impress by it. I check YouTube @ 1080p and it couldn't handle it. Even 720p was jittery. What do you guys think?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I too was less then impressed with Atrix so I'll stick with Inspire at least for now. Hopefully Infuse will drop soon.
nevermind ....
CM7 will never make it to the atrix and development will be restricted to the same kernel released by moto. So hell no.
I went to the ATT store with the intent of trading my inspire for an Atrix. I played with it for a few minutes and decided it wouldn't be an upgrade for me. I mainly use my phone for texting, email and twitter. Dual core can't improve that experience very much. Maybe I'd see it a different way if I played lots of games on my phone but I don't.
They even let me play with the laptop dock, which further cemented my decision. It really can't compete with even the cheapest of netbooks out today. Too slow, especially on pages with flash.
I also just like the massive solid metal feel over the plastic of the Atrix.

- you cant have roms on it because of its locked bootloader. and the stock roms lags thanks to the moto blur " what a horrible thing "
- still on 2.2 and god knows when it will get updated to 2.3 , even if it does, it wont get the honeycomb while nexus S owners will get it day 1.
- multi touch problem. it doesnt recognize more than 2 fingers. and when it does. you cant keep pressing on the screen for more than 14 seconds. after that, the screen will go funny on you. meaning if you are playing a racing game, you cant keep pressing on the gas and the directional area in the same time for more than 14 seconds. if you do, you will see your car in the game stopped moving and you will be like wtf is going on " this is not a bug with my unit. its with all the atrix "
- Screen is ugly. they say its qHD. but holy crap its ugly. very dull. the colors are no match to the super amoled. while this is a personal taste and its different between one guy to another. i think you will agree with me once you put the phone head to head with your new nexus S.
+ it has dual core processor from Nvidia. meaning if all the negative problems i said above got fixed, then you are in a gaming and emualtors heaven. because this thing is more powerful than the nexus S in terms of GPU and CPU.
but i hardly think ANY of the problems will be fixed. the phone was released in Feb 2011. its been more than 2 months and nothing.
dont let the 2 roms in the atrix development forums fool you. they are not really "roms " . no one touched the karnel. they are mearly an advanced " theme "
all in all. i dont think you shouldnt buy the nexus S even unless you want a pure google experience. because the LG 2Gx is here. the Samsung Galaxy S2 is here and the last is a god gift for the phones " based on a personal hands on "
Wow that was amazing. What you said but the thing is I'm on rogers and live in canada so only 2 choice i have now is either nexus s or xperia arc. Canada sucks with phone updates.

The Resolution is 960x540, compared to Nexus S 800x480. Atrix has Pentile TFT LCD, which is the problem that people have with it. It can produce some odd/washed out colors, but generally is great and needs to be the new standard resolution as far as I'm concerned. Not necessarily with Pentile. The Nexus S has Samsungs nice Super Amoled. You do lose a bit of resolution, but colors are definitely more accurately reproduced.

honestly. i have never been impressed with a phone as much as i did with the galaxy S2. its a truly a next gen phone by all standards. with the latest HTC and Sony Ericsson offering, its clear that Samsung will be the king of android for this year also.
Wait for the HTC Sensation, it's a worthy competition to the GS2. Seriously, I think the Sense UI wins over touchwiz hands down, the screen is qHD as well versus 800x480 only on the GS2.

1- the Atrix is QhD. it means nothing. i was still able to see the pixels. and the colors are not great compared to the super amoled plus. and i have the SGS2 in my hand. and i used to own the atrix. so i know what i am talking about.
2- dont compare the old touchwiz to the new one as the new one is generations ahead of whats in the first one. PLUS the fact i can play all my movies in the SGS2 without having to convert any video is a + no matter how you look at it.
3- HTC sense. is just a UI. a user interface. nothing more. there are million of others available in the market. and to make it more " fun " htc sense 3.0 is already being ported to many devices including the old samsung galaxy S1. which means 1 month from now, it will be available with fully working performance on galaxy S. never make a user interface a reason to buy a phone.
4- the SGS2 is a higher specd phone. from video card to 2M front facing camera to no scrolling lagg at all while browsing. honestly this thing is a beast
and to make things worst. the engadget hands on with the new HTC is " laggy"
and thats a demo unit that supposed to show off.
Nice battery, big screen.

HTC build quality is much better, plus I'm an HTC loyalist. HTC phones always feel more solid and sturdy than the plasticky samsung phones. They're too light weight almost and feel like I could break them with my bear hands. I like the aluminum frame of the Sensation. I'm very happy with my sensation. SAMOLED screens are better in most cases, but I had a friend who owned a vibrant and that screen had an annoying blue tinge, as do most of the samoled screens I think. The screen I have has very pure whites and surprisingly dark blacks, and is fine in sunlight, especially compared to my old phone. I can read texts just fine in bright daylight, this screen is very bright. Plus the resolution is higher. I love the qHD screen.

Why...
Are people on here so addicted to new tech that they will jump to another phone as soon as a new one comes out?
I got the phone I wanted on a 2yr contract knowing that in less than 6m it would be surpassed by something newer but not neccessarily better.
I like the Sensation and can't see me changing for the S2 espec as I would not be able to cover the cost of a sim-free version.
If I had wanted the S2 I would have got it and then lived with it for the life of my contract
The Sensation is not a perfect phone, but it's a darn good one (better than the iphone 3g) I came from.
I dont think the phone will be any faster than the sensation considering its not shipping with the exynos SOC/
So outta curiosity how truly good is cyanogenmod? Someone who really knows his stuff.
Cause I tried it on sensation just a bit ago and although yea it is quick it didn't blow me away. Went right back to sense.
Also deriving from what I mentikned up there I saw someone post something about a new nexus s being faster then cyanogenmod??
I mention this because one of my friends whose a girl and knows nkthig about phones had soooo much crap on the nexus s. It was the sprint version I believe. And with like three messaging apps all running, many different browsers, and seriusly a whole lotta crap the phone was sooooo fast.
I literally was stunned. It was stock and every single thing I did on it was instantaneous.
And u know when u see bunch of stuff in notification bar and u just kinda know it ll lag a bit. I felt that but was surprised with zero lag.
It sadly has me thinking...

The Sensation has a higher resolution screen, and that hits performance because the phone has to push data to more pixels; also the Sensation and SG2 have similar processors (as you pointed out) but the Sensation runs at 1.2 MHz and the SG2 runs at 1.5 MHz.
ROMs aside, the SG2 is faster on paper.

The screen I have has very pure whites and surprisingly dark blacks, and is fine in sunlight, especially compared to my old phone. I can read texts just fine in bright daylight, this screen is very bright. Plus the resolution is higher. I love the qHD screen.

I agree with you I have always like the HTC build quality but performance wise they have been lacking and the debacle the caused with the so called Bootloader unlock then say screw you no warranty was the icing on the cake. I came from a Evo 4g to the Sensation to the Epic 4G Touch resolution not a problem for me. the performance and smoothness of the OS what's going to appeal to the OS faithful that may come running seeing that Apple decided to give them nothing. this year basically all this hype and they got what would be a 3GS to the 4g lol.

I will give you that. I love HTC Sense as well but I believe that as of right now its to bloated and holding back what the processor is really capable of.

well i got play with the Amaze a couple days ago and i can tell you for a fact that the processor is definately snappier in stock form , i was getting 2700 quadrant scores with it stock , now with that said i think the SGS2 will be alot faster running a more vanilla android, I am planning on getting a SGS2 and i cant believe im even saying that ,reason being is that the sensation is falling apart on me , the glass coverig my camera lens fell out and that wasnt a big deal to me until the rocker on the volume button fell off , now i dont know if flashing three thousand times already has something to do with it but im a little dissapointed by that. all being said i just want a bigger screen and thats the main reason plus it gets the better processor and front camera
Not me
I wanted an SGS2 bad enough to almost buy one from overseas unlocked when they first hit the market. But since Samsung decided to release it here last, there are new phones coming out before the end of the year that by far surpass the SGS2. America is the largest consumer of High-end smart phones (yes, i researched it) mainly because we constantly upgrade to the newest and best. Samsung was stupid to release it here last. If someone gave me an SGS2 in trade i'd do it, but it's not worth sinking more cash into a new SGS2 when quad-core is literally right around the corner. Plus phones like the Sharp Aquas and the Note (can't remember which company is making it) will be out in a few months and they surpass the SGS2 in speed, display, screen size, etc. (and these aren't event quad-core as far as the specs ive seen, but still better than the SGS2).
Anyways, that's my 2 cents. I'll be waiting for a Quad-core device with Ice Cream Sandwich. Plus, the PS vita is quad-core and you can make calls from it Better than PS3 graphics in the palm of my hand! Talk about a gaming device! hahahahah
Okay. So me and my mother are switching to AT&T soon, from Sprint. The skyrocket is the phone I'm going to go with, however I'm trying to figure out whether I should get the Skyrocket or use an old phone to hold me over until the skyrocket HD comes out? Yeah I know the only difference will be price and of course screen resolution but I don't want to get stuck for 2 years with 800x480 pixels when in a year we'll probably see like 3480x2140. Lol I'm wondering though, will the skyrocket HD have a decent amount of development? All I need is of course cm7/9 and or MIUI. I was also wondering, will it use the same roms and themes as the original Skyrocket since its the same phone just with a higher resolution screen? If that's the case I'm going to just wait for the HD. Which I'll probably do anyways. Just wanted to ask these questions. Thanks guys.

My snapdragon and screen are fine...anyhow, wait till the HD in my opinion. Skyrocket is a great phone either way.

there are these 3 letters that everyone NOT on TMo/Sprint like:
L
T
E
The original poster already said he was conflicted on whether to get the Og or the HD because he didn't want to be left behind with an obsulete version. I say get the HD, my phone having the latest features helped me pick the skyrocket. I knew I would never be happy with a phone knowing LTE was out.

My Skyrocket is better than the SGS2 for AT&T (i777) I had previously: equivalent UI/app speed, much faster data, bigger screen, equivalent battery life.
What was your point?
By the time HD skyrocket hits retail the SGS 3 should be coming out.

Development between the Skyrocket and HD will likely see a huge amount of overlap. Adapting ROMs from one to the other will likely require little more than a recompile. So in that regard, ultimately the two models are good for us, brings more people into the fold.
So don't worry about the HD getting neglected. If that's your concern, wait it out.
You might also want to consider the regular Galaxy S II. All it's missing is LTE, and it's cheaper, available right now, already has ICS, and the Exynos is generally considered to be the more powerful chip (although the difference isn't that huge, they're both very speedy phones).

In Korea or whatever. We never get that stuff until 6 months later.
Even if you get the HD another phone that's better will probably come out. Besides isn't the battery life going to be worse on HD than on the OG rocket?

my advice is to wait for the HD and see how it compares performance, battery wise etc and then make a decision. Not sure the snapdragon or any processor can handle almost 3X more pixels with ease.

It doesn't really work that way. The HD Super AMOLED screen isn't going to use more just because of its resolution. Super AMOLED Plus in our phones demonstrated much lower power consumption, despite a huge increase in subpixel resolution compared to the Super AMOLED panels in the first Galaxy S.
I mean the screen may or may not be a greater power draw. I haven't seen any comparisons. But I wouldn't assume it is just because it's HD resolution.

This is a legit concern. Not that the chip can't handle it; It's at the very least better equipped to do so than the OMAP in the Galaxy Nexus. But there's surely a performance hit to be taken by running at a much higher resolution.
The Galaxy S II LTE WIMAX came out here in Japan recently with the HD resolution. The screen is slightly bigger than the LTE/Skyrocket but the AMOLED technology is the same as the previous Galaxy S II.
The screen is very nice, perhaps a little better than the LG Optimus LTE HD (Nitro) in terms of viewing angle and brightness, however it's not the same as the super AMOLED plus in the LTE/Skyrocket which is quite vivid by comparison.
Text on the WIMAX is very readable, and nicer to read than on the LTE, however some people might find it a little too small. I've always been a 1080p guy, but have found myself straining my eyes on small screens these days. A 10.1" tablet would just about be the minimum size for full HD.
The smaller size resolution and screen on the LTE makes panel transition smoother (the Galaxy S II is smoother still), the HD panels of the WIMAX is hefty work for the same processor also used by the LTE, if speed is your priority then I would recommend waiting for the second generation HD phones to come out with much faster processors.
I had a feeling that the HD panels wouldn't be as bright being a first generation type which was why I went for the LTE, it may probably be the last of the 800x480 type but it will be the best it can be.
Anyway and we are still subjected to regular Android changes that may produce more HD based applications, so who knows where this will be heading. It will benefit tablets more because the higher resolution helps, but not sure on mobile phones.
The only reason I would say wait is if the resolution is that big of a deal to you.
Personally I went from the 4" Atrix with a higher resolution to the 4.5" Skyrocket with a lower resolution, so it bugged the ****ing hell out of me (made me feel like an old person phone with the huge ass buttons). It was fixed with the "LCD Resolution" app; I'm now running at 914 x 548 with the Skyrocket and this phone is everything I've ever wanted.
Like others have said, when the Skyrocket is announced there will be other phones that you will want and will just have to wait even longer.

I will have to check out that app! I have been bothered by the giant icons after coming from the Atrix. I'm looking forward to trying out the Alien ROM on this phone, I loved it on the Atrix.

I have the Galaxy Captivate, the AT&T Galaxy S II, and the Skyrocket.
The captivate served me well. Still is kicking ass with ICS on it.
The AT&T Galaxy S II is nice, fast and a good phone.
But I use the skyrocket because it's JUST as fast as the GS II, it's got LTE and a bigger screen (My screen looks fine, great actually).
I had some battery issues with a rom but flashed again and It's been kicking along just fine. 12 hours later , still got 63% battery left.

Wow thanks for the tip on that app, love my phone even more now! Just wish I could fit more apps on the screen now, they seem so spaced out...lol
Ok nevermind about fitting more apps. Tried out ADW Launcher and it works beautifully. Only pita is having to go back to stock resolution to install some things in the market then setting everything up again...
