[Q] experiencing flickery shuts down in most roms and kernels. - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Every time I turn my phone off I can semi seen the lock screen for a bit moment like half a second. I figure it was the glados kernel since it has vodoo mod so then I flash different kernels but kept happening but it turned green. Turns out its happening to a lot of people but then I switched to pure stock again but the flickery continues. I'll upload a video of it later. Anyone else experiencing this?

yea i have experienced this too basically on all the ics 4.0.3 builds that are out right now hopefully there will be a fix soon

ah okay Voodoo mods turn my screen green tint but right now thats pretty much the issue I have but hopefully there will be a fix for it soon. I noticed it used to happened with my old nexus one but that was only because I lowered my clock speed down to 200 when I didnt it was normal but I wasnt underclocking in my Nexus S

Happens to me on unrooted ics. I got the ota yesterday and its barely noticeable. But it doesn't happen to my brother's nexus apparently

I'm on rooted stock 4.0.3 and I get random flickering of the screen when I turn it off. Only flickers once and for a fraction of a second. It seems pretty random.

I did a lot to this Nexus S so I thought maybe I had messed up something
I just use the stock kernel cos any other kernel makes it green flicker

If you want the features of a custom kernel without the green flash you need to put all the gamma settings to 0 in the voodoo app. I had the flicker on stock but I don't think I've noticed it on the cm9 alpha I'm running now. Maybe it has something to do with the ota installing over gb?

So I tried CyanogenMod 9 v4.0.3 Alfa 17 because some people were saying it wasnt happening there and nope still happening but it was green so I flashed glados kernel and now instead of being green it darkish yellow

Mines has done it since I updated, it flashes little pieces of whatever image was on before turning off, only for a split second tho, hopefully a fix will be on its way soon to fix this and the other little glitches that came with ics,on a side note my ns seems to have settled down some and is starting to run a bit better overall...

I also get a very, very quick flash of the lock screen generally only if i lock and unlock quickly. Very minor and not particularly annoying. Using an i9023, assuming the colour flashes would be on the SAMOLEDs?

well, really anything you were doing but happens if you doing quickly

Anyone observed these?
1) When you have normal wallpaper on the homescreen, the momentary screen flash doesnt happen(99% of the time). Doesnt matter if you have autobrightness on or off. But if you have live wallpaper on the home screen, the momentary screen flash after lock happens (99% of the time).
2) Try these one, If you have live wallpaper set, but you pull down the notification bar before you lock your screen, the flashing will not happen.
I observe if you are on static screen when you lock your nexus s screen( normal wallpaper, at the app drawer, notification bar down) the screen flash will not happen.
Maybe this is a problem or bug with live wallpaper or dynamic/moving screen when locking nexus s ICS.

[Q] Shift charge light issues

I have been searching for a couple days with no luck. My girlfriends shift is rooted and we have tried installing both synergy rls1 and currently mikshifted. The odd thing is that with both roms her charge light will come on solid as if plugged in ans wont turn off until the phone is reset. Once reset she can go about 10 minutes before it comes back on. It wouldnt be so bad if it didnt kill her notification led and more importantly kill her battery life. It dowsnt do the thing with the led on cm7 but she loves sense and doesnt want ro be without it. Any and all help is appreciated.
Not really a solution buy have you tried using supreme sense? It doesn't seem like a rom issue but who knows. If it doesn't work try unrooting and re-rooting.

What your seeing is a kb light bug and it came about when the cyanogen code was injected into Sense, the cool crt screen on and off animation, all you have to do to clear it is after you shut your keyboard just touch the status bar....or Supreme Sense i have the crt removed so no one has that bug, also i have a flashable made and posted on themikmik.com for users of MikShifted-G to remove the crt and kill that bug!

Here the link for No CRT = NO LIGHT BUG .
Thanks all around, we tried out the supreme sense (she didnt like the 3d) but the no crt flash worked perfectly. I love these forums, although i only tend to lurk, there are always people willing to help.

[Q] Flash on screen when locking

I have Nexus S i9020 and I have this bad problem..
It's started when I flashed AOSP ICS Brainmaster's Mix.. When I locked the phone, I had a strange yellow-green flash on the screen.. I tried flashing different kernels - no effect.. When I tried playing with Voodoo colors - no effect.. The only "semi-cure" was: if you return to "Stock gingerbread colors" that damn screenflash was seen only on the contour of clock and "that slide thing to unlock the screen" (don't know how to name it in english=))..
I thought that it was just the bug of the ROM then.. But when I flashed CM9 latest alpha everything remained the same.. I also thought that it was just a bug of the ROM..
But now I flashed ICS OTA after the downgrade to stock 2.3.6.. And the result is the same to switching to gingerbread colors in Voodoo app on AOSP old ICS ROMs.. I still have the screenflash on the contour on the lock and that "slidething"..
It's really annoying now as I'm starting to think that it is a hardware issue.. But all other functions work just perfect, not any single issue with the screen.. I haven't dropped my phone, haven't kicked it or something (bought it in June)
Can anybody help with this please?
P.S.: there were some similar threads here, but I haven't found the cure..
I tried playing with "Transition animation scale" and "Window animation scale" in Developer Options.. Setting window animation scale to 0.5x solves the problem.. But it turns off CRTscreen fadeout.. So there is something wrong with it on my phone.. I don't want to loose it, it's beautiful..
Any advice please?
I understand that I can only annoy with this question.. But still I don't know what to do! Please suggest any possible ideas, every piece of wisdom could help!
Now I've rooted official ICS, installed Nexus Beam 4.1.0 and flashed Glados 2.1 kernel.. And the green & yellow screenflash once again all over the screen when I lock the phone..
In every other possible way the screen behaves itself perfectly.. But when it turns off I see that damn flash..
Mine does it too
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Mine does it only when i wake the phone and put it back to sleep without unlocking it
Mine has the exact same problem. It doesn't happen in gingerbread but on ics roms, even stock, it does a flash. On stock its lighter and harder to see, but if I change voodoo settings it turns green. I doubt its hardware considering it works fine on gingerbread.

So we have not only one complaint.. Something must be done to cure it.. It's really annoying as it is the only thing that works not fine on this phone!
Can somebody of the developers please comment on this problem?
Has someone found an answer to this?

I've seen this discussed somewhere already, but can't recall where!? But to my knowledge, if I can remember correctly it can be corrected by resetting voodoo control settings back to 2.3.3 defaults! Something to do with gamma settings I think! But obviously you have to be rooted to have & use voodoo control!!
I've tried a couple of those settings, but it never totaly get rid of the problem, it's just less visible. But since I know it's there, i'll always be seeing it XD

LED buttons

I've flashed a lot of roms on my phone and on most of them led buttons (home, back, search... at the bottom of the phone doesnt light up when you navigate through phone...can someone tell me why is this so and if you can fix it somehow by your own?
Sorry if this thread is already up, i havent seen it...
They aren't meant to light up in normal use. They are only meant to light up when the room is dark.

Can you tell us what is your current ROM please?
I had the same problem in CyanogenMod9, when I turned off the autobrightness. Somebody tells that it's because of sweep2wake function. By the way, when brightness is auto - everything works fine.
As far as i remember, on stock rom, those buttons always lighted up, and on my last 3 roms now they never did. I'm currently using Primos-s, but before i had Runny sense 3.5 rom, and didn't work too. i find this thing very annoying because i have to blind guess everytime... I have auto-brightness turned on, and still these buttons neve rlight up, even in dark.
In some Roms like Endymion which I use there's a tweak for the brightness at which the buttons light up. In stock they only lit up in complete darkness. Hopefully it works the same in Fallout ..
Tapa2 desire s
I'd be very happy if they light up only in darkness, but now they never do...hopefully, on the next rom i'll use they will work

As mentioned above, some ROMs have implemented tweaks so they will only light up in very dark conditions. In my opinion, this is even better.
Try another ROM.

Apps flickering software or hardware issue?

You know when your in an app then go back home and the widgets need to reload them selves its like that but with all my icons they keep disappearing and reappearing until I open an app or lock my phone then unlock again. I noticed it twice so far and the last time I was downloading a bunch of music to my phone so might have something to do with lag even though there shouldn't be any problems with 2 gigs of ram.

Ive noticed this too but on mine they just flicker real quick. I'm sure it has something to do with TW. It is rather annoying, i'd like to know more about this.

That only happened to me when I had the clock +weather widget on my home screen. When I replaced it with just the clock (digital)widget, everything was running smooth.

Im hoping its software issue this is only my 3rd day with the phone and want to figure out if i should return it or wait for an update. Also my keyboard did the same kind of thing but it was just one flash not sure if there related. Little bugs remind me why my last phone was an iphone.. Thats the only thing i miss about ios is there are really aren't any bugs.

I think it is a software issue. My screen flickers when I flashed CNA and BlackBean but does not flicker with AOKP. My guess is that AOKP is more stable and less buggy?
I would suggest going into your developer options and disable HW overlays. This works on AOSP ROMs and it should work on TW ROMs also.

Will do. But quick question, wouldn't the developers of CNA and Black Bean have figured this out prior to the release of their custom rom?

I would have thought so. But then again there roms are probably built from a modified source and compiled. Once compiled they probably flash it to make sure it boots. If confirmed to boot they probably upload the original. In that case it would not have the option enabled. That is my educated guess on the subject. lol
Screen flickering on AOSP based roms is nothing new, been a known issue for a long time. Some things get fixed then break cause of something else was changed.
Flickering
My phone is original. No Root. Screen just started flickering the other day. I have had it since August. I did nothing different to the phone. Verizon claims I damaged the phone in some way. I have not done anything to damage it. If I open the Gallery on the phone, it starts going crazy. Does not always do it. If I use something like Google Earth or Maps and then open the Gallery, I get horizontal lines across the screen flickering up and down randomly. Swiping gets sluggish when all this happens. Almost like the memory fills up. I look in the memory and it is not even using 1GB, but is close to it when all this happens. Not sure what the heck happened to cause this issue to all of sudden start occurring.

4.1.2 changes

So mates, what are the changes in 4.1.2 from 4.1.1? besides the 0.0.1

Two biggest things I feel like is the bluetooth and camera in call, neither of which really bother me, I just want the kernel source so I have something new to play with lol, although I doubt much has really changed.
it also changed the way the notifications works in the pull down.
when have a notification that can be expanded, it now has the easy AOSP style two finger pull pull down rather than what Samsung has going on now with the horrible pinch to zoom.

I'll just be happy when change those UGLY green and gray colors.. I mean we are in jellybean and they are using colors from gingerbread lol. It's sad because I honestly like the rest of the TW interface, samsung just seems to like dark, bland looking colors.

It really is too bad, with root, it takes me all of 3 mins. to fix the battery and toggles to the correct colors, I can't understand why Samsung couldn't either??

I know right? On my thunderbolt all I had to do was crack open an apk, switch the icons, bam done, and I made said icons with photoshop in no time. And if it was odexed, add maybe 5-10 depending on if everything works the first time lol
On a backend level, I really wish samsung would've cleaned up their kernel source some, there are warnings EV VER RE WHERE lol, the thunderbolt source wasn't near as bad. I'm not sure how the real kernel devs went about compiling theres, but I had to make a few changes to a few source files just to get it to compile. Thankfully there are people must smarter than me that had the same issues and found the simple fixes, all which would've taken weeks for me to trace.
I loved the green gray and blue colors from stock Touchwiz when I first got this phone but now I loathe them. As far as 4.1.2 goes, nothing too special it seems like, besides for maybe the bluetooth improvements.

the version of 4.1.2 I have also adds the Best Face feature to the camera (didn't see that listed in the updates specific to this phone, or I may be running some oddball version), either way it wasn't there in the stock 4.1.1 for me.
I do have an odd issue since going to 4.1.2, If I have my phone in my pocket and receive a phone call, I pull the phone out of my pocket accidentally touching the screen, I can not then slide to answer the phone call. I messed around and found a setting to answer calls by pressing home button, so I have got around it for now.
However I have played around more and discovered if at any point in time I keep a few fingers on the screen at once for a few seconds it seems to disable touch input all together and I have to lock the phone then unlock to get it back.... didn't seem to happen on 4.1.1 for me. Hasn;t caught me too many times but every once in a while it bugs the hell out of me.
Any chance the new update has the ability to change the APN or is it still locked down?
Thanks friends. I was going to flash the newest rpm and modem, do you guys see any improvements in signal strength?
