[Q] Connecting external WiFi card to G2X - T-Mobile LG G2x

Is this even possible? Connecting for instance a USB WiFi card to the G2X using the mini usb port? I'm interested in using Backtrack on the G2X but it doesn't support WiFi on ARM from what I understand.

I do not think this is possible because the WiFi card will not recognize the phone's OS.
However, if you have a hotspot (external WiFi card for multiple devices), it will work as it does not require a usb cable.

Realistically, the WiFi card will not be connected to Android but Backtrack 5.

First you need usb host support. Second android needs drivers for the card which I guess is possible to hack in. Third the app you are using needs to recognize usb host which is most unlikely. It will only check for onboard and the app most likely doesn't have a an option to check anywhere else. I could be wrong though

USB and SD Card

Has the xoom come out with the software update to use the media card yet? if yes, how is the experience for reading from and writing to the card. Can you watch a video that is on the card?
Also can an external harddrive plug into the usb and can read from and write to the external?
Thanks
Are you rooted?

The answer to all of your questions is YES.
The most recent update enabled read only access to the external micro sdcard UNLESS you are rooted. Then you can have read/write access.
IF you are rooted, you can use the Xoom in usb host mode with a usbOTG cable and access (read/write to) thumb drive, external hard drive, etc, as well as use usb keyboard, mouse, controller, etc.
Wait, without root, you can still use your USB controllers, keyboard and mice. Also without root, you will be able to play videos off your USB drive connected via OTG cable. You won't be able to write to it.
I have not seen one compelling reason to root yet. My Xoom does everything just fine stock.

Great! I'm glad to hear it.
Hi,
I've a Xoom 3G w/ Tiamat 2.2.1..... I do plug devices on my usb port, but nothing happens. When, using the OTG adapter, I plug a usb connected to the computer, then the computer can read the contents of my xoom (so, I think that my otg adapter, which by the way has a Motorola symbol and SKN6252A writen, is working properly).
What am I doing wrong?
Also without root, you will be able to play videos off your USB drive connected via OTG cable.

So if I have video file that I want to play on my xoom. I should copy to a SD card or thumb drive. If thumb drive I need to have a OTG cable to connect my xoom to my usb drive? I am not understanding and I am at work so my google and browsing is limited (i am just glad they let me have xda).

Yes, you can copy a video to your sdcard and watch it or onto a thumb drive or HDD and connect with an OTG cable. There are a couple of free apps that help with host mode.
I use DVD Catalyst to convert my ripped dvds to watch on the Xoom and it works great with my 32gb class 10 sdhc card.

Are you rooted? If you are rooted and are having trouble using usb host mode, there are some things you can do to help it along. To my knowledge (which is admittedly limited, as I been rooted from day 2) you can't use usb host mode with out a custom kernel or rom which allows it. Stock doesn't give this access as far as I know. BlazinGTI says it's possible, and if so, that is great!

Your stock non-rooted Xoom should be able to read from micro sdcard to play music/video files, etc. I don't think writing is possible. I've never had to reformat but I think fat thirty two should wouk just fine.

[Q] Backwards WiFi tether

Does anyone know of a way that I can use an old Droid X as a reverse WiFi hotspot? What I want to do is use the existing WiFi in my house and connect to a device that does not have a WiFi card in it. Is there a way to connect my old phone to my wireless network, then share that connection through the USB cord? Thanks

Yes, It's called "USB" tether. It is built into ICS and Jellybean. Also the app "PDA 3.5" works very well for this if you are on GB or below.
edit:
Just to further explain, you just connect your droid X to your WiFi network, then hook it up to the computer you want internet on with USB, then go to settings > Wirelss and networks > more > tethering a portable hotspot, and select the USB option.
If that does not work then use PDA 3.5 (free market app, works well, gives you full instructions)

Thanks I'll give this a try when I get home. I figured the tether would only work on a data connection. I know in the past when I've tried turning tethering on then it automatically would turn off my wifi.
As far as I knew to get PDAnet to work you had to install on the computer as well. Does PDA 3.5 work the same way? If so I won't be able to do that as I have no way of installing it on the device I am trying to connect to the internet.

You have to use an OTG cable. Not ordinary micro USB cable with female USB end. Secondly some OTG cables are faulty. So make sure that the one you are using is working well.

Tested extreamsd usb recorder pro with m audio fast track pro.
Worked on my old Samsung 7.7 phablet

Thank you,
I have a friend who has this^^ phone model, and I wanted to transfer a file to her phone from my thumb drive, using an OTG adapter, both of which I use all the time with my phone. When I plugged it in, it said "preparing USB storage," but then no further notifications. I went to Settings>Storage and saw that her phone had detected that the USB was connected, we could see used and available space on the USB, but we were unable to view or access any files on the USB. So is this a problem with their UI? Is the phone just not compatible?

[Q] Windows can't recognize Nexus 5

Hi,
Purchased nexus 5 (refurb) and as the tittle states, my computer seems unable to recognize this device. I've switched the USB cable as well as test it with another device AND I made sure that the usb configuration is set to MTP,so I know it's the nexus itself. Weirdly, it does receive a charge. Any help would be appreciated as I am hoping to root this device.
Thanks guys
You tried different USB ports?
If you are using Windows, no new devices appear in device manager after connecting the phone?
Was it ever recognize by your computer? Was it recognized by the seller's computer?
Once connected to your computer, swipe down on the Nexus 5 screen, there will be options to change connection type.

Seriously? Nice try though, thanks anyway
Does the phone function properly other than not being seen by your computer? Were you able to try it on another computer?
Does the USB port recognize an OTG drive?
If everything works (mic, speaker, etc.), it's possible that the USB port is damaged in some way.

I'm assuming it has to be damaged. I've tried three computers so far and all it's doing is charging the phone. I don't have an OTG cable on hand so it's hard to determine if it would work that way, but pretty much everything works out of the box except for this issue.
This is pretty annoying, I was looking forward to putting some custom ROM's after working with the s6edge sluggish Touchwiz software
Yup, sounds like th USB port is damaged and needs to be replaced.
When buying a replacement, make that the seller has good feedback. I saw a few posts where the replacement port had issues with the mic, charging, or data transfer.

Sidesync USB Android to Android

Hello all, I have a question in regards to SideSync. I am able to connect both Android devices Note 5 and Tab Pro 12.2 with no issues over Wi-Fi. But if Wi-Fi is unavailable I am unable to connect the devices using a USB cable. Ideally I would like to be able to connect the devices outside of Wi-Fi for a mobile application. If anyone has any ideas for this particular scenario I would greatly appreciate it.

I would use a USB OTG cable and connect both phones to the OTG cable. One device will act as a host and the other as a slave. The host device should show the slave device as a USBdisk. This has worked for me.

I have tried connecting the devices via OTG cable with no luck. USB works for Android to pc but doesn't seem to work Android to Android.
Is there any way to connect to the WiFi supplied by a device via Hotspot. Basically make a device connect to it's own Hotspot in order to have both devices on the same WiFi since that is the only way I can seem to get Android-Android connection working for SideSync.
Your 2nd opinion won't work. You can't force a device to connect its wifi to its own hotspot. I have not had many issues using the OTG cable to connect two Android devices. What type of OTG cable/device do you have? Can you post a screenshot?

When you have both devices connected to the OTG, go to settings - storage on the host device and see if the OTG device is mounted. If not, I believe you can select the device to mount it.
