[Q] Wipe? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd probably sell my TF in a few days, to get the money for TF Prime (yay!).
I have CWM, Root and Prime! ROM installed, and before selling I want to wipe the tablet from options menu (factory reset), so then it would be factory-clean from my personal info, rooting, etc.
Factory reset from the options is nice enough? All partitions will be erased and safely restored to full factory defaults? Or I need some more thorough wiping anyway?

When I change custom ROM I always do factory reset, wipe calvik cache and use SuperWipe script from Android Revolution..I think that this combo should erase EVERYTHING ..

When you do a factory reset it ONLY wipe out your data.
If you have root, CWM and custom ROM installed, those will still be there.
If you want to go back to full stock you need to unroot.

Thanks! I wonder if I can just nvflash these images right away... then update firmware. Think it'll be much faster and less steps. Do you think it's possible?

factory reset?

I have a question that needs an answer
I installed VU on my inspire 4g. i have all my contacts on it and such . however i am giving that phone to my wife now. can i do a factory restore and it will restore it to the way VU was originaly installed without my apps and my contacts?
thanks !
Yes you can, just either do the wipe user data option from clockworkmod recovery, or do a factory reset from the options.
thank you !

No don't do that. Custom roms install things that will be deleted if you factory reset. Then it will bootloop or be missing apps do a master clear and then reflash the rom
what is the master clear? how do you do that? and you say flash the ROM, do you mean the stock ROM from HTC?

That depends on which rom she wants. If its her first android rom and you want to shoot for a stock feel then yes do the stock HTC rom. If she is comfortable with a custom rom then do a full wipe and then reinstall VU. Custom roms install things to the data partition which gets wiped when you do a factory reset causing apps to force close or not be there and depending on the custom tweaks it can also cause a bootloop at times.

[Q]Flashing A New ROM

So I'm familiar with flashing, just not with the tablet. What's the accepted method for flashing from 1ROM to the next? With my phone I generally flashed back to stock using ODIN. Is it OK to simply jump from one ROM to the next?
Thanks guys.

The same method for your phone is generally the best way to do it on a tablet as well. You "can" jump from one to another, but you always run the risk of file pieces getting left behind or random little bugs cropping up and such. For that reason, it's always best to do a full wipe, factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and then flash the new ROM.

Formating /system, /data and /cache is sufficient. Factory reset could compromise your /sdcard and /sd-ext (if any) data, depending on the custom recovery you're using.

I just want to be clear, im to understand that all I really need to do is a fact data reset, and wipe everything from recovery? if thats all there is to it then freaking sweet. flashing to ODIN and going through the motions gets annoying.

I have always done this with the express intent to wipe everything clear and reinstall all apps and data fresh once I'm on the new ROM, but this has never messed up my CWM.

Yeah, I feel your pain. I love my SGSII and my wife has my old Captivate, but the ODIN stuff all the time did get kind of annoying. Luckily ODIN and a homemade jig are a lifesaver if you ever screw anything up though But yes, flashing to a new ROM on the tablet is pretty simple and doesn't have a few of the extra steps you have to do on certain phones. Just back everything up on your PC first, then I generally like to type out a list of all the apps I have on the tablet to redownload afterward, then wipe it all and flash the new ROM, then start downloading stuff from the market again.

What to wipe when flashing custom rom?

Hello all. I know this is a noob question and Im sorry, but I need to ask.
When Im flashing a custom rom (going to try EOS again) what exactly do I need to wipe?
Im using TWRP. I know that I need to wipe the Cache, Dalvik Cache and system. Do I also choose the Factory Reset option? How about Internal Storage? Then there is the Format Data option. Which of these should I do?

If you do a factory reset, you don't have to worry about wiping anything else.
As for what to wipe for installing a custom ROM, it depends. EOS recommends a factory reset when you are flashing their ROMs going from any other type of ROM, including stock. If your on ICS, to jellybean, factory reset. 4.1 to 4.2, factory reset. One nightly to the newer one, you don't have too.
Internal storage is not something you want to wipe... that is any pictures, files, music etc. etc. that you have on the tablet, it will be the same as when you unlock the bootloader, you lose EVERYTHING!! Factory reset, you won't lose anything that isn't on the system partition.
Make sure you are on the latest version of the recommended recoveries
Perfect. The information you gave is exactly what I needed. Thanks Draxin.

What is safe to wipe? Not NV flash protected

Unfortunately, I was not able to protect NV flash at the time I rooted/unlocked.
I have been running Clean Rom Inheritance for months and loving it. Every update, I wipe cache and dalvik cache but nothing else and everything is running perfect.
I use Titanium and have no worries about doing "full wipes", it only takes a few minutes to get things back to what they were.
I am worried about doing a full wipe or wiping the wrong thing without NV flash protection. Should I be? I have it in the back of my head that I read somewhere that someone wiped system or the wrong thing and bricked. Just want to clarify.
Can I wipe system? Factory reset from recovery (not through settings in the OS)? .........all without worry if I don't have NV flash?

What version of recovery are you on and what bootloader and version on Cromi. If you have the latest you wont brick, but if you have old, outdated recovery/bootloader then there is a possibly. Yes some have bricked because the old ICS recovery are not compatible with the jelly bean bootloader.

Yes, but it's pointless because afterwards you don't have an operating system installed, and installing a new ROM formats the system partition anyway.

Read this: http://teamw.in/whattowipe
To brick your device: Use "wipe data" from the bootloader menu with a broken recovery (e.g. incompatible with current bootloader, or erased via fastboot before). There is no way back from that.
I'm currently on TWRP 2.4.4.0......CROMI 3.4.7......Bootloader 10.4.4.25 US
@_That.......The bricking you're talking about is from the bootloader menu (different from the recovery menu) AND if my recovery were incompatible? Correct? So what ever I do from recovery would be safe (including factory reset or the redundant wipe system as you said)

Right. Don't ever use 'wipe data' in the bootloader menu without a known good recovery. Actually, since you can do it from within the recovery, just forget that the option even exists.

I am not familiar with wiping at all, but all options in the recovery should be safe. You still need to be aware what each option does to avoid losing important data.

[Q] Will a phone Reset make me lose Root?

I'm having an issue with an app and I've tried everything I can think of to troubleshoot it, Uninstall/re-install. Turn phone off/on, restart phone.
I was thinking of trying a reset on my phone, but it's currently rooted/unlocked.
Will doing the reset under settings give me any issues?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
If you have a custom recovery installed like twrp or cwm you can do a full wipe from there and it will essentially do the same thing.

No it wont.
I also have the same question. Did you do the reset? Lose root? What happened?

Yes it will. And if you think it won't a little more elaborate post would be helpful...... ?????
I would not do a factory restore from Settings with a custom recovery installed. I have never tried this on the M8 but on the Transformer tablets that can get you into a nasty "forced reboot to recovery" loop.
If it's an app causing the problem, just do a Factory Wipe in recovery. In TWRP the Factory Wipe will wipe all your apps and their data (not your personal files in data/media though) and also cache and dalvik. Not sure how CWM handles that option....
Read the recovery log while it's running or save the log from the Advanced option and check afterwards which partitions the recovery wiped.
For good measure re-flash the rom and you should be good to go.
