[Q] Tablet Pricing & Help. - General Questions and Answers

Christmas is this week and where I live there's very few choices on tablets THAT I KNOW OF!
I need a bunch of suggestions for CHEAP tablets. Tablets that last a while.
Tablets I've looked at:
- Amazon Kindle Android
- Nook
- Cruz Android Tablet[Sucked]
- Samsung Galaxy Tab
My budget is $200, I've got to make a good choice because I turn 21 next year and my parents have threatened to stop buying gifts for me.
Thanks.

Moving to Q&A

If u have a little more cash u can buy a better tab like the Asus transformer. The kindle is a great choice for a low end tab. I would stick with the kindle and I am not so sure u can get the galaxy tab for $200. Merry Christmas and don't forget to hit the thanks button if I helped.

With a $200 budget you could look into an HP Touchpad on Craig's List. Ships with WebOS, and it's super easy to intall Android in a dual boot configuration.
I got mine for $175.

Sounds like it'd be worth a look at. I've got $50 and my parents are willing to sport me a few hundred.
I looked at the Transformer and it's WAY too much out of my price range. I'm wanting a device that has FULL DEV SUPPORT.

The thing I was curious about with the Touchpad was could I install any other ROM except CM7 I personally strongly dislike the CyanogenMod ROMs myself

I haven't seen any other Android ROMs aside from CM7. But, I love CM7 so I haven't really looked for anything else.

Any ROM that's based on CM7, all 2 of them.
TouchPad? Awesome. Buggy gingerbread on a 10" screen? Meh. I think webOS is better than 2.3 on a tablet. When ICS is finished the TouchPad, that's a show stopper.
For $200 you can't beat the TouchPad. I looked at getting a Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet of Color, or Vizio vtab, and came to the conclusion after using all of them the Kindle fire was the best value and smoothest experience, but pales in comparison to webOS on the TouchPad.

Tablet help

Hey guys, I need your help picking a tablet out, I don't have much experience but I know I really want ons. My choices are the new Samsung gravity, the xoom, ipad2, ascus, or anything that's good!
Is there anyway around the iPad not having flash... Thanks for your feedback
Ps the tablet is mainly going to be used for fun

HP sold the TouchPad for 99 Euro in their Webshop on Monday. Unfortunately I saw it too late and didn't get one.
Do you mean the Samsung Galaxy Tab or the 10.1 version, and Asus transformer?
Yeah I meant 10.1 and the transformer, thanks for catching

This tab looks really sweet, but...

Before I get flamed I purchased ipad 2 because at the time no android tablets supported Netflix. That was a deciding factor.
Looking at buying the 7" tablet btw.
So I have been debating on selling my ipad 2 and getting the new ipad, but I think I finally decided I am going to get an android tablet and would like to go a tad smaller. Then I might actually use it for its intended purpose. This tablet looks really nice, the only concern I have is if hulu plus and Netflix work on the tablet.
My tablet is used more for watching those two apps than anything else. Also anyone else go from an ipad to this and what are your thoughts?
Feedback would be appreciated as I will probably buy one Friday if it will work for me.
Thanks for the reply guys!

OP not to deter your original purpose but I was somewhat on the same boat as you. I had a TF101 and didn't really use it as it was too big to carry around with me and anytime I sat down to use it, it was easier just to pull out my laptop. Well I can say that changed with this tablet. It's easy enough to hold in one hand and is far easier to use than my laptop even when just sitting around the house making it my new go to gadget. If you want something smaller that is built well I would go with this tablet.

Both apps work fine but I don't think the Hulu Plus app from the market will install or run due to lack of hulu support. You can download a cracked Hulu app on XDA. ..just search for Landscape Mod Hulu Plus.

I don't know if this is helpful to your decision, but even tethered to my Droid X hotspot, Netflix runs flawlessly. I was stunned by the picture quality.

After reading your post I tried downloading the app and it installed fine and opened without any problems. I browsed around but didn't watch anything since i did not want to start my free trial yet.

Nexus 7 owner thinking about getting infinity pad

Hi guys I have a nexus 7 got it on release . It is my first ever tablet I love it but I find myself using my gnex more than it .I feel like it is an over sized gnex rather than a true tablet . I recently sold my dell xps 15 z and I really need something I can use to do word documents check email tweet a bit Skype my girl friend etc ..I was wondering if selling my nexus 7 to get an infinity pad is a good idea?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I was deciding between the Nexus 7 and the Transformer Infinity for my first tablet purchase. The iPad was out because of the closed ecosystem, and I have already paid for android apps on my phone that will scale up well once installed on the tablet. The Nexus 7 was almost a no brainer for me, it has a great price, quad-core processor, amazing screen and great software support from Google except for the lack of
1. MicroSD expandability (gameloft games on average take up at least 2 gigs of internal memory)
2. HDMI-out (with apps like Netflix, Hulu plus, and HBO go not to mention flash support, being able to output that to a TV screen is a huge plus)
For about twice as much as the Nexus 7, the Infinity offers a higher resolution screen that's also brighter powered by a top of the line quad core processor. It also includes a microSD slot, 8 mp camera, microHDMI out and the ability to expand via a mobile docking station that adds additional battery life, full sized USB OTG support and a SD slot. I have to say that all the additional features are worth the extra premium. I don't have to worry about storage space and the tablet functions much like a laptop replacement for me. If you're on the fence between the two, I'd say go for the Infinity.
Thanks dude yeah I have the nexus 7 now ...idk it just seems like an overweight galaxy nexus ....I'm really leaning on getting the tf700

I had the same situation, I was wondering between Nexus 7 and Asus Infinity. Those were actually the only options I was considering.
Lets just say that finally the decision turned into Infinity because here in FInland cannot yet buy Nexus 7. Also because I already have a big screened phone (SGS3) i was thinking that the difference between phone and tablet would then be quite small.
My feelings are quite divided currently. On the other hand I love the screen, it is sharp and nice. I like to read books and magazines from it. But then on the other hand the Android system is very laggy. Not sure what is going on here but this is much worse than for example with Galaxy S 2 and no reason to put this on the same table with Galaxy S 3.
Also for example right now I just for some reason lost connection to wifi and this claims not in range. However I have Galaxy S 3 and ipad 1 just next to it and both are working just fine..
I truly hope this is just some sucky software, but currently can't say I am impressed...
Just watching videos about Nexus 7..should I..

Yeah, I had a nexus 7. It wasn't bad just didn't have enough space. It was surely an upgrade to the galaxy tab 8.9 I had before it. I gave my mom the nexus 7 when I picked up the Infinity, and the Infinity is great. The FFC on the Infinity is nice for Skype and the key-dock isn't bad. Its a little small but not hard to type on. I have extra-large glove sized hands and I never get typos on regular keyboards, but do get a few on the Infinity's. I wouln't want to write a novel on the Infinity but for short papers, emails, etc its not bad at all and beats onscreen keyboards hands down. Lots of luck in your decision making.

I have both...the Nexus 7 is fun to play games on and read on...also, there is a lot of development for it already and it's fun to flash new roms and kernels. It does have serious storage limitations and you just can't use it for anything related to productivity, at least I can't. The TF infinity is just a bigger. more meaty tablet...I'm typing this now on the keyboard dock, got a wireless mouse, and with the super battery life I'm getting, I really don't need a laptop. I'm running the Zeus rom and it's much smoother and snappier than before.

That's because it's impossible to answer a question like that - we are not you - we don't use the device the same as you would. How can someone else decide which device is better for you? That's a personal decision based on your usage and personal preferences!
Personally, I think the Nexus 7 and the Infinity are two completely different beasts. It's very hard to truly compare them. One is small enough to slide it your jacket pocket and one is more of a netbook replacement (assuming you get the keyboard dock). They really are geared toward different audiences.
So, to answer you question - go to a store and try them out and see which you would prefer! That's the only way to really answer your question.

I was in the same exact situation as you! I bought the Nexus 7 and really did like it especially the smoothness and the feel of jelly bean. But I have an Evo 4G lte 4.5 inch screen it just felt like a bigger version of it. So I sold the Nexus 7 and bought the Infinity and I've had it for a couple of days and I have mixed feelings. The screen on the infinity is amazing, but the lagginess and wifi dropping off is kinda getting on my nerves. The Nexus 7 did not have these issues I'm disappointed in the performance and debating exchanging it and trying a new one. I think in retrospect I should have kept the Nexus and the Infinity. Just my two cents.

I have the Nexus 7 and someone is offering me a swap and I only have to add 200 dollars for the 64gb version! The form factor of the N7 is unbeatable, it's extremely portable and easy to play games on. Surfing is a breeze and you don't feel tired when holding it for a very long time. On the other hand the screen has a lot less to be desired upon AND the screen flickering issue of the n7 is INSANE. I was just about ready to give up on the n7 but I just flashed AOKP build 3 and it might have just did the trick! I also brought my router closer and I think it does help.
I've been reading on the transformer and it has the same screen flickering issue so I'm having second thoughts.

I personally have zero screen flickering on either the Transformer Infinity or on the Nexus 7 (which my daughter has now appropriated). I believe that there are a number of units of both tablets with hardware issues but I've been fortunate enough not to experience them.

Uh, you have to be more specific. What do you want to do with the tablet? Are you an Apple person, or an Android person? 7'? 8.9"? 10"?
you can try the galaxy note tablet
I'm looking for an android tablet. Either a 7" or 10". I was looking between the galaxy tabs 2 both in 7" and 10". Kinda read mixed reviews.

I would YouTube galaxy2 tab vs galaxy note and use spec difference. My personal opinion the note would be my choice because galaxy tab can be hassle with fc even in basic stock. But you gotta find the difference there
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I have a tab 2 10.1. It hasn't had any fc or problems. It also doesn't have very much dev support. It runs well for me, it's rooted, and I use it for watching movies and surfing the web.
Look into the note tablet and the nexus 7. Those are better tablets as far as specs go. They probably also have more dev support. Up to you though, the tab 2 works just fine for me.

I've had a nexus 7 for a few months now. I love it. The constant android os updates are a huge plus for me. There's pretty good dev support, too. For the price, I'm shocked at how much I like it.
There are a few bugs with the screen. Some users report a horizontal line of burnt pixels developing, and other users report blurry edges. My nexus 7 developed the horizontal line last week. I made a three minute phone call and a new nexus 7 arrived two days later. Not bad at all. I've read the screen issues have been fixed as of now.
Oh, it's also easy as heck to root and maintain. Rooting took me less than 10 minutes from start to finish.
Edit:
It depends if u really want a similar experience as the skyrocket. I imagine the Samsung tablets may be a good pick. I found the uber clean stock Android 4.2 system on the N7 was simple enough for me to bounce and forth between the skyrocket and not go bald or blind from stress.
Unclefest v2 alive and kicking - support SeanZ!

[Q] would you buy it now?

I have a chance to purchase a new in box TF101 and keyboard dock for less than $300.
I currently have an SGS3 on JB and a touchpad running ICS. The touchpad runs fine, 2 day battery life and does pretty much everything i want, i'm just wondering if this transformer would be a good upgrade.
IMO, I wouldn't spend that kind of money on any Tegra 2 device. Tegra 2 is getting very old, and Tegra 4 devices are coming out. My TF is still a capable device, but the technology is old.

I love my TF101 and dock, but for $300, I would not spend the money. You can get a 32 GB Nexus 7 (quad core) for $250.
Heck, a used/refurb TF300 isnt much more than $300 if you look for some deals.

I just looked, November 21 woot.com had the TF300T 16 GB with dock for 305 shipped.
It is not around every day for that price, but if you are patient and keep looking, you should be able to find the keyboard and tablet for 300-400.

300 is a bit steep in my books too but then again I have 2 that i am fighting with family to get time on them. before EOS4 rom there was no fight but thanks too all them briliant minds working on that rom I am looking for another one as well. mainly cause I cant convince the boss that Im worth 500 to 600 for a new device lol.
SO.... im sure i would pop out 250 if i could find one with a dock
Would do perhaps for $225 +/- 25 if I wanted a 10" tablet and definitely wanted the dock and was on a budget. If you want a 7" tablet and/or don't care about the dock, there are other options to consider.
It also depends on what you want to do with it.

That is sooo true! Timduru has brought the EOS4 rom to a very stable state. From my point of veiw there are only 2 very minor issues that most wouldnt even notice. other than those every thing just works and smoothly too.
You can see all the hours of work Timduru has put in and he has improvements rolling out almost daily :good:
**edit** should say its EOS4 with KAT kernal that are running so well
Thanks to everyone for the info, i've decided to pass, if you are a sams club member and in sioux falls, sd it was $260 last i checked (their number if you want to try and have them ship it 605-362-0119) go right ahead it was there on saturday.
I did manage to pick up a tf700 return from them for $217 w/o the dock, but my wife has made that off limits as it will be a graduation present for her middle child so i'm sticking to my touchpad on 4.04 for now.
