Hi,
Go into recovery,
wipe cache and dalvik,
flash kernel like a ROM,
reboot.

Sometimes if you experiance many force closes after flashing a ROM it can help to "fix permissions" in recovery

Great thanks

As a matter of policy, after a few issues, I always "try" to do all three, cache/Dalvik/Permissions. I keep meaning to make a zip to do them all in one.

I think he means, you need recovery as it was PRE-ClockworkMod. Any threads?
(correct me if I'm wrong)
Then that's a different matter altogether. Will need to figure that out. Does that involve unrooting the device after recovery?

I'm going to do this tomorrow to update. It should work.
So did it work
- Backup everything using CWM and Titanium Backup.
- Install the RUU to get back to Stock Recovery. (You'll loose all settings/apps/SMS/etc..)
- Install your OTA update.
- Restore everything using Titanium Backup.
This should work for any of you who has CWM Recovery. If you already have Stock Recovery, then you're ready to go. You don't need to flash a new rom by the RUU.
It's not the root that is causing the problem, it is the CWM Recovery.
Keep in mind, flashing a RUU may brick your device, I take no responsibilities of any damage that may be caused to your device
I just discovered a new method, tried it and it worked.
Take a look at this.

Q. Should I do a full data wipe all the time before I install a new rom?

I have never reformatted the system dose it get rid off all the crap I had on the phone ? Meaning all the cached files from the roms I previously had or what dose a reformat do to the phone ? Thanks in advance you all rock.

It usually depends if your changing from different ROMs or staying with the same chef. When changing between different chefs Roms, its always best to do a wipe. Their thread will tell you such. If your staying with the same chef, you only need to wipe if they say so. Usually it will be noted in the release notes.
Good rule of thumb, if you are in doubt, use titanium backup and wipe.

Why would you wipe dalvik after wiping /data? Dalvik is located in /data and will already have been wiped.

How do you do a full wipe like everything except the s d card I don't want it to have any remdrnts of anything is that what the Android revolution wipe would do.

Thanks for infotmation.
Sorry for bumping an old thread but just to clarify on the wiping. In order to transition from lets say an Android Revolution HD ROM to one of InsertCoins I would have to wipe the data and cache via Recovery or else a simple execution of Mike's Superwipe script would suffice?
Zz
data and cache wipe recommendet before flashing new roms.
if u wont that there could be some know issue problems - so dont cry ;-)
maybe u should take an nandbackup before flash.
tried wipe when i flashed 2 roms ... so far so good ...
no harm wiping ... and dun forget to backup before that

[Q] Going from Sense to AOSP ROM

If I have flashed a Sense ROM that required an ext4 wipe/format, are there any steps I need to take (besides a data, cache, dalvik cache wipe) if I want to go back to an AOSP ROM?
Nope just flash regularly

New to sensation 4g

How your doing everyone just wanted to introduce myself I just came from the galaxy s 4g forums. So lame I had to upgrade. I just got rooted yesterday and just need to know a little more info on super cid and flashing ruu firmware I been reading on it alot but I don't know which roms need the super cid or not any help or a point into the right direction will be appreciated. Thanks in advance looking forward to these forums

The super cid would only be required if you're going to flash any ics 4.0.3 rom to prevent boot loops or getting stuck on the splash screen

Hows that android revolution from I see 4 of them on the op just don't know which one to go with
Sent from my MIUI.us Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
Android revolution and insertcoin are both really great ics roms if you want the full sense experience, but for me, I prefer ics being aosp like because I think its really nice and polished looking which is why I would use virtuous inquisition if you want senseless
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e with Beats Audio using XDA App
yo welcome!! same here i used like sense soo much back when it was like 2.1 days, but with ICS coming around and being able to play with it, AOSP is now what im looking for. just waiting for the CM9 to be released. hopefully soon, till then virtuous inquisition is what im using
It's worth having Super CID simply as you'll not have to worry about having to do it again if a ROM requires it.
I'd give the Virtuous ROM series a go if you're after a AOSP style experience or ICS Sense, and I can happily say ARHD is brilliant too.
Thanks for the replies I just did the super cid and flashed the p58img that starts with 3.12 and everything is fine it just says locked on the boot screen and hboot 1.23 am I good to flash that virtious Rom now

Well if you want to be on the super safe side, I guess a super wipe would be in order. Otherwise, a factory/data wipe should be fine.
Ok cool I appreciate everyone's help I'm not a noob just new to HTC Im just used to the Samsung galaxies they don't have none of this bootloader bs and fast boot I appreciate everything guys this forum is wary more friendly than the gs4g forums. We didn't even have cm7 or miui that's why I had to upgrade I'm loving this phone already

Do factory reset. It should help.
If I do factory reset it would get me.bak to the old version?

No, if you're on ICS, you'll only reset ICS.

Are you rooted and s off? If not I'm very sorry to say you can not go back. However if you are rooted yes you most certainly switch back to Gingerbread if you like. If your really hateing it you CAN root and revert back to Gingerbread after your successful in rooting. You might want to even try a Ics Rom. I've found them to be a lot more stable than stock Rom. I was having issues on stock and once I rooted and installed custom Rom the issue went away.however only do what your comfortable doing. I wish you the very best in what ever you're decisions.

O well thank you guys for helping out!

The reason everything is force closing is because it needs a factory reset. My sisters SGSII did the same, i noticed when i reflashed the ota update for her it didnt wipe at all and all the apps force closed
