Hello
I've installed android 4.0.3 update on my nexus s (i9023) manually.
During the istallation I didn't have any problem, but after that when I select "recovery" from bootloader the google logo appears and after few seconds the android system starts up. so I dont have access to recovery menu to apply any other update.
How can I fix that?!
it's a known issue that 4.0.3 has a broken recovery.
the solution is:
- flash cwm again from bootloader, using fast boot.
- flash latest superuser (with fix for 4.0.3).
- once in ics, go to /etc with a root browser and delete install-recovery.sh.
- go back to the bootloader and lash cwm again (it should stick now).
I'm having the same issue. i9023 unrooted; switched to ICS using manual update but I forgot to do a full wipe.
I can't access the Recovery menu anymore; can this be fixed without rooting or messing up my phone ? :/

A lot of the new roms based off the official OTA have removed the script that installs the stock recovery.
You don't need root to flash recovery from the bootloader, just an unlocked bootloader. So yes, it can be fixed without rooting your phone. Just reboot to the bootloader and flash recovery using fastboot.
Thank you. Do you have a link with step by step explanations on how to do that?

The backlight just doesn't work in stock recovery. It sounds crazy, but if you point a bright light at the screen, you will see it. If you see an android and exclamation mark, press volume up and power. Sometimes you have to do it several times and reboot the recovery. Worked for me on the I9023

Thank you very much mate!
No way to use the stock recovery after 4.0.3 installation,if i try i see an android the goes K.O. showing an exclamation mark and then black screen, but with the 3 buttons with light.
How to install or reinstall the recovery and then rooting the device?
Can't see any menu whatsoever even with a bright light directed on my screen.
Is there any solution for this?
marcelln said in the second post of this thread the procedure. Just replace the stock bootloader with CWM via fastboot, do what you need to do (root, etc) and once done rename/delete install-recovery.sh - then flash CWM again.
Following most rooting guides will tell you how to get all this done, just remember to flash the latest CWM.
Well I do not want to root my phone or change stock bootloader...

Now I know that there isn't any luck to get my phone rooted at this time, but I can't even get into stock recovery at the moment to even make a nandroid. I've been flashing for a while and have a GNexus and I was picking up the One X because I was switching carriers. I know even on a locked everything you could still get to the Recovery, I had a locked Motorola Droid X2.
Has anyone ran into the issue with a fully stock phone and can point me in the direction of where to solve the issue? I've been searching for a few hours with no avail.

I don't think there is a recovery for completely stock one x... not one that lets you make a backup anyways

Well I do get the Boot into recovery option from the H-Boot Menu, it loads up into a Red triangle, and I literally didn't touch anything on the phone before that lol. Bad software maybe?

My stock 2.20 isn't even letting me boot into the bootloader. Are you just doing power + volume down? When I do my bottom buttons flash a few times then it boots normally. Only had this a few days, first Android I've had that can't be rooted.

hold power until it flashes 5 times and turns off, then just keep holding volume down and you should get into bootloader
red triangle is stock recovery

I didn't think you could nandroid without custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) on ANY phone. And you can't get custom recovery without root or an unlocked bootloader or both.
If the phone arrived with 2.20, nandroid isn't possible. I would be surprised if stock recovery did anything more than factory reset.

Not if its a AT&T version and came with 2.20.
If it came with 1.85 or lower you can root the device (super fun adb procedure) then apply SuperCID, that will let you trick HTCDev into thinking its a different device, and unlock the bootloader. Then more adb fun and you can install TWRP, then flash custom ROMs.
Its not like a Samsung phone where you can download Odin, boot into download mode, flash a kernel, start CWM, and flash a ROM all before your first boot.

Hey guys i just got this phone from a random on craigslist and hes unlocked the bootloader and stopped there. I dnt know what method he used but in order to power on the device i have to use certain button combos. Example it boots straight to recovery so i reboot now and while its rebooting i have to hold both volume buttons and the power until a white lettered screen pops up and use volume up to power on. And tips? Ty in advance.

on the white-lettered screen try and choose Bootloader. if you can get there you can flash either CWM or TWRP recovery, then flash a working system, or else do a full firmware flash with RSD Lite. or if he already flashed a custom recovery you could boot there and try flashing a working ROM.
Hes got cwm on here. And from what i can tell just rooted the stock rom. Ive never seen a device having a method to power on except maybe a semi tethered jailbroken iphone. Idk

Any suggestions for roms for when i get this figured out?
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
The device should turn on normally, unless he did something to put it in a bootloop. That's why i figured your basic option was to do a stock restore of some kind.
Check the dev. sections, but rooted stock is basically the only option at present. There are starts on CM9 and CM10 builds, but i don't think they do a whole lot besides boot up. There is a deodexed version of stock that you can flash, and at least apply some tweaks and such
Right on thanx man ill try it and see what happens.

Ok new topic. I think the dude i got the phone from unlocked the bootloader but didnt root it. He said it was rooted. But when i dl rom manager it said i wasnt. So i guess my question is how do i root the thing?
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
Ah ok, if the bootloader is unlocked, just flash either CWM or TWRP recovery thru Fastboot, then boot into recovery and flash SU.
Edit: after flashing recovery, make sure to boot straight into recovery by holding the volume up button while rebooting. If you boot into the system, it will probably overwrite your flash with stock recovery.
Hes already installed cwm. I cant use regular boot methods. When i reboot the phone it boots into recovery. Thats when i hold down all the buttons to bring up the boot options screen. So basically all i have to do is flash the su file? Btw I tried doing that along with flashing a kernel and cm9 it wouldnt boot into the rom.

I'm not sure how you're sending all these messages from a dead phone...
But regardless, CM9 doesn't really "work" per se. It boots, sure... but nothing else works.
You're going to have to flash one of the stock backups people posted around. I know there was a .win backup of everything - which you'll need TWRP to restore.
Hey, I'm in a problem here.
I just rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader a few days ago. I wanted to flash CleanROM so I downloaded the large 500mb file from their official website and followed the instructions that were there (http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=358).
I have TWRP Recovery installed and as I said, my bootloader is unlocked (using HTCdev). I connected my phone to my computer and set as disk drive so I can copy the zip file of the ROM to a folder named "ROMs" in my storage. I did that.
next, it told me to reboot to recovery, so I used the All in one tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952426) to Reboot to Recovery. It did, and put me on TWRP.
The next instruction was to wipe data/factory reset. I did that. Then it told me to install the ROM. I hit the Install button in TWRP, navigated to the ROMs folder, and flashed the CleanROM 6 R2.zip file that I moved in there earlier.
It was a success and it had a button that would reboot system. I pressed it because the instructions on ScottRoms stated to do so.
It showed the standard HTC One logo with a white background but then nothing happens. I tried waiting a bit but nada.
I then proceeded to just hold the power button and then the 3 touch buttons on the phone (back, home, recent apps) lighted up and kept flashing. When it was done flashing, I hit the power button again and it would boot again to the same logo and just go black.
What's going on? Please, I turn to XDA because you guys are geniuses and really nice people, hope this is not a serious problem! I followed all instructions, btw.

To get into boot loader you have to hold power and volume down at the same time. When lights stop flashing release power but continue to hold volume down. You may have to flash boot image in fastboot depending on your hboot version. There are guides to do this in the stickies at the top. Also make sure you know the codename of your phone ie "Evita". Flashing the wrong ROM can be deadly.

For most roms you will have to manually flash the boot image. You can use flash gui to do this for you " available at the play store". Or you could s-off and flash away.

I was running CleanROM Inheritance 3.4.something. I had just rebooted the tablet, battery was around 95%. I launched an app while reboot was still going on, as evidenced by the toasts that came up regarding superuser permissions.
And then it happened. The display went blank. I still had sound. Hardware buttons did nothing until I held the power button down. Device went into reboot and stalled at the bootanimation. More than 5 minutes went by so I rebooted into recovery.
While in recovery, I poked around for a backup to revert to. I have misplaced my recovery SD card...but no big deal. I was considering updating to CleanROM Inheritance 3.4.7. I downloaded that from the interwebs, copied it to an SD, then booted the device into recovery and flashed it. The flashing process had no issues and I rebooted the device.
Now the device is still doing the same thing. Still stuck at the bootanimation. Been another 5 minutes on this one too.
I compel thee to opine.

Δεν είμαι σίγουρος αν κατάλαβα καλά όλα αυτά.
Yeah means I need a PC or just do it all from TWRP recovery (I think I have 2.3.1). I was looking at the CROMi-X thread and didn't see any need for a PC if I am already running a custom recovery and ROM. I might just stick with what I have for now...don't want to get in too deep. Been a while since I've done anything with the TF700 anyway, barely even used it last month.
If I can't do it all from flashing from recovery, I need to do more thinking and reading before I do anything else.
Thanks again for your support.

Oh I actually didnt see The bootloader package on the Cromi-x thread, that should work fine. I tried this method long ago, but my bootloader package didn't have a custom recovery included so i still needed to use a pc to fastboot one on. The cromi one should be fine
Yes I prepared the recovery and bootloader as one so as long as you have any custom recovery installed you can use my package to get to the right supported versions. Twrp 2.6 still has issues hence why I haven't upgraded yet.
I have done all the flashing. All is good. I am happy with the update but I need to thin out my apps. I am curious why there isn't an advanced power menu (shutdown, reboot, recovery, hot boot).

So I have this Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, GT-P3100 with Jellybeans 4.1.2. I recently rooted it using Kingroot. It worked fine until I tried installing a custom kernel. I installed unofficial miui v5.4 using CVM Recovery v6.0.7 I think. I clicked install from sd card and installed the .zip file. It said installed after a few mind. I then clicked reboot device now. It started booting and showed a new boot image, which I thought was normal. But the image wasn't fitting in the screen. I waited full 30 mins and it stayed there, a light coming and going as a logo. Nothing happened, so I pressed the key combination of power button + volume up button for 5 seconds and it started again, showing the new symbol. It has not booted after an hour and half.
Please help, I don't know what to do.

I admit I am a little new in this. But I saw a website to tomsguide.com and followed the steps with pictures.

hello sir,
i know how to solve your problem.
the problem you are facing is a boot loop .i.e you get stuck in the boot logo
and your device never goes further.
the common reason is not clearing dalvik cache before flashing a new rom in recovery.
so now solve this problem follow these steps.
1. charge your device fully and go to recovery.
2. do the following-
do a factory data reset.
clear cache and go to advanced and clear dalvik cache.
now flash the kernel and rom and the gapps(if you have).
now reboot and see you will go through the boot logo .
HURRAY YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY FLASHED YOUR NEW ROM
NOTE: all the steps above are only to practice in CWM Recovery.
if you still have any problems let mw know.
thanks
