First Android device, need some help

Hello people of xda-developers
I got my first Android phone, which is an LG G2X 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
I have been searching around and found out you can root your phone which is kinda like jailbreaking an iphone.
I still don't completely understand how to do it though. I've seen a couple of threads that tell you how to root your Android device with something called SuperOneClick, but from what I understand, this doesn't work with the new Gingerbread.
Now from what I understand, you first have to root your phone, then flash it with CWM Recovery with NVFlash right?
Could someone please lead me to the threads that explain how to root a G2X with Gingerbread, and how to flash it with CWM Recovery.

although someone did post a way to root the gingerbread rom its pretty complicated for a new user.
the oneclick methods of rooting for the 2.3.3 dont exist.
if you want to be able to flash custom roms(which you do) than follow this link and it will walk you through what to do.

that will get you where you need to be. but it will not root the rom you are currently using youll need to flash a custom rom for that. in the development section youll see several roms either from source. or that are based on the 2.3.3 release and xboarders is the 2.3.3 with root only thats the only change.

Okay I flashed CWM via NVFlash. Now I have a question. How can I backup my apps before flashing a rom. I tried to use Titanium Backup, but that doesn't work because my phone isn't rooted. If I boot into Recovery, do I have to wipe data before I install for ex. CM7 onto my phone? But wouldn't wiping the data delete all of my apps?

Yes wipe everything. Here's a step-by-step method of flashing new roms:
1. Wipe Data/Factory
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe Dalvik
4. Wipe Battery stats - HINT. Always flash new ROMs with 100% battery to get the best battery life
5. Format/system
6. install zip from SD card
7. Fix permissions
8. Reboot and Enjoy!
All your paid apps will come again when you login to your Google account and set up your market. In Market, just press the menu button and hit My Apps and you should be able to re-install all your paid apps.

If you have Clockworkmod successfully flashed then you CAN now root without flashing another rom. Download the zip (theres one that roots, and one that unroots should you ever want that) file from the OP of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214. Save it to your sdcard, boot into recovery and select to install zip from sdcard. Navigate to the zip file and install/flash it. Reboot and you have rooted your system with all your files and apps in place.

I did this. My phone is now rooted, but I ran into a problem. I tried flashing CM7 through ROM manager, I cleared cache and Dalvik and then flashed the CM7 Rom, but when I go to reboot, the phone freezes at the "T-Mobile G2X with Google" animation.

Try it without rom manager. Power your phone off and then boot into recovery by holding power + volume down until you see the recovery splash screen. Do a full wipe and then flash cm7 again. After successfully installing cm7, or any rom for that matter, your first reboot may take several minutes while it builds the dalvik cache. Subsequent reboots will be MUCH faster.

Ah okay, I didn't know the first reboot takes longer. I'll give it a try from CWM Recovery.
Just wondering, which ROM is the most stable/popular?

Popular? Its really about personal preference but I'd say cm7, xboarders stock tweaked, miui, weapon, and eaglesblood are right up there at the top. If you want a more stock experience go with xboarders. Cm7 is fairly stock looking with a lot of useful features added. Miui is the opposite end of the spectrum, a very different kind of android indeed lol.
As for stable, any of the ones I mentioned are good, and probably others as well. Cm7 nightly builds are certainly useful enough to be a daily driver, but they have a few issues, but what else would you expect from nightly builds. They are development versions, not final releases.
Try a few and find what you like. Just make sure to keep a good working backup in case you fubar your phone lol.

Alright I got CM7 working and flashed google apps.
Now I have another little problem Before I flashed CM7, I used Titanium Backup to backup some of my game apps. After I flashed CM7, I go to Titanium Backup and none of my apps are there to restore. I connected my phone to my computer and I opened the Titanium Backup folder and the zip files and the PROPERTIES files are all there. How come I'm not able to restore my apps using Titanium Backup if all of the files are there?
I have the .apk files for the apps and I can just install them again, but I'm going to lose my save data.

I have never had success with Titanium Backup. Just reinstall your apks clean and forget about the old data. A clean install is better. Think about doing a new Windows installation. Do you want to import the crap that messed up your Windows in the first place? Android is the same way. Better to not import your old data and start new.

Wait no! Don't do that you can salvage ur save data.
What happens when you install CM7 is that the sdcard directory now points to your external sd card rather then the internal that comes with the phone.
the internal is now at /mnt/emmc
Get root explorer and you will see what I'm talking about.
Once you have root explorer just copy the titanium backup folder from /mnt/emmc to /sdcard and you should be able to restore all user apps with data... however DO NOT restore system data from stock to CM7... big headaches.

Too late, lol.
I deleted the Titanum Backup folder from my phone.
Oh well, nothing GameCIH can't solve.

Titanium backup goes to you internal sdcard. so you connect to you computer find the folder named TitaniumBackup or something like that, then move that folder to your sd card. Its just a matter of keeping same folder structure that titanium looks for (ie the correct folder name), and puttin the files in there, on the correct external sd card

oh also most of the time replacing the app doesn't work, just replace the data and it will work (unless of course you are actually trying to change the app in that case good luck).

[Q] about backup,CWM restore=titanium restore?

The question is :
restoring "USER APP" from a backup made with clockworkmod,is the same thing than restoring from titatanium backup?
I'm talking about user app and not system app, and i know that titanium let you choose what you need.

CWM only lets you restore everything in the "Simple" mode (that is, format all main partitions and replace with the backup). If you click on advanced restore you can do the same for a particular partition, such as just /data which would essentially do what you just said.
Now i've not tried doing this via CWM, but i can easily see this leading to problems. I would use NANDROIDs only to do full backups or advanced restore only if you are using the exact same ROM as the backup. Otherwise, probably best to save the trouble and stick with Titanium.

Usually i flash cm9 kang every day,so i assume that restoring from cwm advanced restore should works without problem.

It most likely would work perfectly fine in that case. Though you can probably just wipe everything besides the /data partition to begin with and just flash the new ROM. Why wipe /data just to flash the same /data?

But the doubt is inside me and sometime i like to try different rom...how can i open "data.img" from cwm backup?
i would like to see what exactly is inside.

I believe it is a yaffs image file. I've not tried to open it but maybe have a look around for unyaffs. Might be easiest to do it in a linux environment, i think there are some native tools available.
However, it is likely just an exact copy of all the files in the /data partition, you're not missing out on anything root explorer doesn't already show you. This means the dalvik cache is in there too, so it might be best to wipe that separately every flash, especially if you decide to restore data via CWM afterward.

I had a look inside root explorer...i wanna try
I think it's the best way,if something goes wrong i'll still have my nand bkp

i tried and seems everything works fine:
start with cm9kang
-nandroid backup
-wiped all
-installed "codename 1.4.0"
-restored from kwm advanced only data
-wiped dalvik
-installed gapps
some settings have been restored,other no ,and all app works
I'm wondering now if codename is cm9 based rom

My question is that suppose , I make a nandroid backup after installing rom manager.If I try to restore my device to factory settings then I have to re-install rom manager after the restore or the rom manager will be there un-affected?

What kind of ROM-manager?
Factory reset usually format data, cache, and ext partitions.
So if the rom-manager is installed on one of these (e.g. installed from the market or as an .apk), it will be also removed.

i strongly recommend a software,that is the rom tool,you can search the key word you will find it goog luck

I am planning to flash cm7.if the flashing process failed (assume????) can I restore the backup using rom manager?
I mean if the stock rom is cleared and cm7 not successfully installed.If there a chance of entering the Clockworkmod recovery and performing restore?

Yes, you can always boot up into recovery and restore the backup you made. If you change firmware as well, it could be that your old ROM is incompatible though, in which case you will need to restore firmware first.

Yes you can... because if you take backup through rom manager... it will take the backup in sdcard and the folder name is i guess 'clockworkmod'... so if sd card is untouched so is clockworkmod...

[Q] How to use Nandroid backup and what exactly it does restore?

2) Installed all My apps which I use.
3) Took Nandroid back-up.
4) Flashed ROM2. Flashed Kernel1.
5) Installed all apps.
6) After 1 days reflashed ROM1 and Kernel1.
7) Tried restoring Nandroid back-up I created 1 day back.
AND IT FAILS!!
Everytime I did a complete wipe of all data and catch and dalvik.
Same happened with CWM and AmonRa
CWM: md5 sums mismatch!!
AmonRa: Oops! Something went wrong!!
Am I mistaken about Nandroid back-up? Am I doing something wrong?

1 Nandroid backup means it reflashes your backed up system with all your installed apps i.e if you have gb rom and do nandroid backup it will backup your current system( in this case gb) with all installed apps at the time you did backup.
2 You said it failed did it display any error while backing your nandroid backup.
3 Never heard of a backup being failed, you must have messed up something.
4 Md5 checksum mismatch means you either had a bad flash or if you moved or replaced some file also backup from different recovery will not work if you backed up from cmw then you cannot restore from amonra recovery, did you change recovery after backing up if you did then it wont work.
5. If you want to backup your apps and data next time try backing it with titanium backup root.Open titanium backup and press batch and then press backup all apps + data.
6. After flashimg new rom install titanium backup root from google play and press restore all app+data this will restore your apps with data.
7. If you use nandroid backup then your rom also changes to the rom that you had while backing up.

Go to your SDcard.. search and go to clockworkmod folder.. go to backup.. now whichever file you see.. Rename it xyz or anything WITHOUT any space!!
Try restoring then!!

I hadn't change anything but the name of the folder with some appropriate name like "CM-9.1.1 Final + CandiedIce Kernel + Apps", so that I can recognize it when I need it. No changes in the 5-6 files of recovery.
Didn't try restoring CWM back-up with AmonRa. Tried Amonra to Amonra and CWM to CWM. Failed all times (almost 5 to 6 times).
Does making folder name without any spaces in between work? If it's so, it's weird!! Is it that way? Should the folder name has to have NO SPACE?
"clockworkmode > backup > CM-9.1.1 + CandiedIce Kernel + Apps" - won't work.
But "clockworkmode > backup > CM-9.1.1+CandiedIce_Kernel+Apps" - will work??
Also, as known CWM couldn't back-up sdext. But otherwise No Error. While AmonRa did all back-up without any sort of error.

Dude.. just do it. WITHOUT ANY SPACE.. if you want to restore!!
And keep a small name!!
Eg: cm9.1.1.candied.ice
Dont use any special characters like $ & #

Thanks for the betterment of my knowledge. I shall keep this in mind for future use!! Recently I am stable with CM 9.1.1 without Gapps.

I usually put spaces in my backup though i have'nt encountered that problem.

yes, this is Linux, means no spaces.

i have a question about this subject,
if i want to backup my rom my stock 4.1.1 on my galaxy nexus how can i do that so that when and if i choose to return or sell the phone i would like to load up the stock Rom back on the phone in case the person isnt tech friendly.
does a Nandroid back up Rom files and kernel as well ???

Use a custom recovery to backup. You can find them at galaxy nexus forum on xda
Yes, it restores everything. Nandroid backup is 1:1 copy of your entire phone memory. It will even restore your messages, call logs, accounts etc

yes, is 1:1; if you restore a nandroid it will take the same space as the rom you backed up, and no, if you make a nandroid backup, you won't loose any data whatsoever, you still can continue using the rom you backed up, but if you are going to restore a nandroid it's better to make a full wipe, like if you are installing a rom, that's the way i do it...

No, I didn't mean that you'd lose data when making a backup. That defeats the point of making a backup in the first place, lol.
I was talking about when you restore it. And from what you just wrote I assume that files that aren't overwritten when restoring remain. Similar to how you can flash a ROM "dirty".

Files will be overwritten. For example, if you make a nandroid, then update an app, when you restore that nandroid, you will restore the previous version of that app.

Yea, exactly how I thought it worked. Thanks for confirming that for me.

guys i have some questions.........
1) nanadroid backs up all system apps and saved data like messages, phonelogs, contacts, saved settings right ??
2) if I flash a new ROM and then want to go back to the previous state by flashing nandroid backup, does it unroot my device?
3) I backup system apps + data by nandroid backup and SD card apps by Titanium Backup. Is this right ??

4) If I have a backup of stock ROM then flash a custom ROM like CM, system files will be different in CM. SO when I restore the stock ROM, files that are new to CM will still remain right?

do you use cwm recovery or twrp idk about twrp but if you are using cwm go to the cwm recovery go down to backup and restore now backup it to sdcard1 (sometimes its shown as backup to external sd card depends on your phone what u use) or just press backup it backups your current rom and your files and now press restore and chose your restore file or if you backup it to your sd card you can do the same thing just chose restore from external sd card and chose your restore file :good: done :good:

Hi, I have got a bit of a doubt here:
I am currently using CyanogenMod 10.2 on my Samsung Galaxy Trend aka Samsung Galaxy Ace 2x. Now I want to try and go back to the stock rom (TouchWiz from Samsung) but I may want to come back to CyanogenMod so I want to backup the whole current rom (apps included) but since the apps are installed in the sd, will ClockWork Mod's Recovery backup only the data in the internal memory? Will it also backup apps installed in the sd card? Will it backup the whole sd card?
What exactly will ClockWork Mod's recovery do when I press Backup?

really it will save your time. u can change between ur roms without using pc.

I wasn't gonna use my pc, just CWM's Recovery, the problem is that I don't know what CWM's recovery will backup and what not. That's what I want to know.

it will backup your entire mobile. everything u have in ur mobile. including the data.
