I hate the way Apple chooses to lock down their devices with iTunes and the App Store, but I'm equally as frustrated with every damn Android device running proprietary crapware on top of Android. There, I said it.
I mean, the selling point is, or should be, Android. Not Samsung or HTC's poor attempts to create superfluous software that does what Android (2.2 anyway) already does, only worse and laggier. I just started up a new contract on Vodafone (Germany) and got a Galaxy S for 149 Euro. I jailbroke and carrier unlocked my old iPhone 3G (from T-Mobile) and popped in my new Vodafone SIM and I'm probably going to put the Galaxy S on eBay to reap the profit off it while it's still high priced. (our contract phones are not carrier locked)
I mean, yea the iPhone 3G is laggy with iOS4, but with jailbreak it's still overall less frustrating than the Galaxy S has been for me. Google needs to *****slap the manufacturers into installing vanilla Android and vanilla Android ONLY. Let them install their proprietary apps like Samsung App Market (and third party apps like some carriers do). That can all be deleted once they are rooted anyway. It's this annoying ROM juggling that is ruining the Android experience for a lot of people who want to get away from Apple, RIM, Microsoft, etc. The only real option for a vanilla experience for most users right now is the Nexus One, which is no longer produced and to which there will be no successor. Why can't we just be given vanilla, and THEN decide whether we want Swype or Sense, or whatever else?
I'm not trying to slag the Android community, because they are great. And I'm far, far from an Apple "fanboy", it's just the manufacturers that are creating too much differentiation within Android. I mean of course Android will experience differentiation with multiple hardware manufactuers. It's part of being an open platform. The problem is it's exacerbated exponentially by the mountains of crapware shoveled onto each different phone.
That it appears Samsung decided to use an internal SD to run the OS and apps is frustrating as well. All that fantastic hardware paired with a slow internal SD with crap I/O performance is kind of....?! Shouldn't have to buy a class 6-10 microSD and partition it with ext4 just to get the phone running the way it should. Especially with the rest of the hardware being wonderful.
I mean.....maybe this is heresy here, but jailbreaking an iPhone4 and using Cydia, et al, seems to be less of a hassle than rooting and ROMing something like the Galaxy S. At least with the iPhone you don't need to remove third party crapware (although the case can be made for Apple's YouTube app being worthless non-removable third party crapware).
The reason I, co-workers and friends of mine find Android so appealing is the ability to install whatever we want, whenever we want. The ability to circumvent an "App Market" and install a Torrent manager to control torrents at home on the go, or to install third party browsers that may offer better performance/options, or other third party applications that technically "compete" with the native Android apps written by Google.
That's what we find so appealing. What we hate, and what keeps us holding out a little on Android (those of us without Nexus Ones) are the aforementioned problems. If the phones simply came with Vanilla Android or if there were a simple option for reverting the phones to Vanilla Android that didn't involve rooting and hunting around for custom ROMs (which often have their own superfluous crap installed) it would draw people towards the Android platform at an even quicker rate. At least with iOS4 we know what we're getting. With Android devices it's a grab bag of poorly written, superfluous crapware, where the only hope is that you can find a device with the least amount.
What is wrong with simply handing us Android devices with vanilla Android? Is every manufacturer afraid that without them guiding us through the experience with their own interpretation that the commonfolk will get lost in the vast sea of open source Android? I mean it's like the blind leading those with 20/20 vision at this point.
Or is it just greed reaching through trying to somehow claim that loading their devices up with crapware increases their profit margins and compensates for the people they wind up driving or keeping away from Android?
I'm just rambling at this point and need coffee. And a vanilla Android device.
I completely agree. I haven't tried the alternate UIs like HTC Sense, but I feel like if it does anything better than vanilla Android, then whatever it does that's better should just be added to vanilla Android.
1st off I too find Android to iPhoney to use. So after testing android for a couple weeks I'm back to WM. I just don't like hitting 6 buttons to do anything. That being said its not fair to compare a brand new phone that been on the market a couple weeks to a phone that launched in 2007. Thats really not fair to android or Samsung.
Standard Android is extremely unattractive to look at. Therefore manufacturers try to enhance it.

I actually prefer the minimalistic look and feel of the standard Android, but that is probably just me.
I can see why you like the minimalist look but the eye candy is for attracting people. If you have never used a smartphone or come from the notmephone you want to be able to navigate through to the essentials the first time you pick it up. HTC Sense allows that, SPB Mobile Shell allows that but standard Android doesn't. Veteran users or Windows Mobile users like myself are fine with it.
It seems that ever since January of 2007, when Apple revealed the rumored iPhone that they have been on top of the mobile game. Even before the phone was even for sale, it literally became the most hyped device in the world. Well its been over 5 years and Apple continues to control the mobile tech game.
But this can't last forever can it? Let's think about the mass popularity of Blackberrys and Sidekicks. Blackberry is a dying brand and sidekick's aren't even relavent in 2012.
Check out this article that explains a few new technologies in development as well as some proposed concepts that can make Apple the old thing.
"The iPhone was a life-changing device for many. Nobody can deny Apple’s ingenuity. But just like Apple wiped out the competition in 2007, any manufacturer could harness an advanced technology that could make the iPhone a thing of the past."

Tell me your opinion
Do you believe the Apple iPhone will continue to be the most popular device? Or will something eventually come along in 5-10 years and just take over the market?
I think this is a big question because many of us speak of how Apple will eventually have the iPhone 10 but we never consider the competition.
I personally feel that apple has its days numbered with the following that certain android based phones are gathering. HTC and Samsung alike are well on their ways to EVENTUALLY topple apple.
I give it three years, apple wont be on top, but will still be relevant. Unless apple changes the game a bit, 10 years and we may be saying "apple who?" There's only so many times you can sell a different variation of a general idea.
Just my opinion

People choose iPhone due to awesome user experience having no performance glitch. Project Butter brings that to Jelly Bean. So, I think.. Android is going to take crown this time.
What I like most: Android users have big choice of hardware specs. If you purchase any digital content from Play Store (or, Amazon App Store), you can use them on large no. of devices which is not true with iTunes case!

I have but one statement to add to this:
If HTC and Samsung wasn't doing so well in the smartphone market, why does Apple keep trying to sue them for anything they can?
Hell, even the Gooapple v5, although a Chinese knockoff, is still a better phone to me just because it runs Android and not iOS.
Say or think what you may, but android should be able to corner the market inside of 12-18 months based on the amount of users alone. No more desktops, no more laptops, and net books with touchscreens that run Android 3.2 for those that want a keyboard...
The future is in your hands, brandish it like a weapon and show it off to every iPhone user you know.

fyi , Android owns over 50% of the world market for the last 2 years at least. Its now around 61% and only 29% for Apple.
I just came from an iPhone 4 to an HTC one x as my first Android device. Just about everyone I actually know that's closely related to me has an iPhone as well.
One thing I've noticed about them is that they don't really seem to care what the latest features of Android are compared to the iPhone. Even when I gloat about what my phone can do compared to their's they just don't seem quite as convinced or impressed by it.
Their only argument for staying with the iPhone is the app store, which I must agree is quite impressive. The also seem to have a misconception that Android is hard to navigate or use compared to iPhone. to some degree it is true, but I wouldn't say it's hard, its just not as user friendly as ios.
Apple will probably retain a lead until they mess up big time with their phone. I feel that moment is coming soon. The os look and feel is extremely outdated in my opinion. They need a new layout for their home screen and something different to keep it fresh.
Also I would like to mention from a personal experience that iPhone is great out the box whereas Android isn't good until you root and throw some great roms on it.
I'm tired of typing on my phone now.

No, they won't. Samsung outsold Apple in Q1 this year. It will happen again. Instead of innovating Apple seems content to litigate and steal, meaning that they aren't bringing anything fresh to the table. People will eventually get tired of shelling out money for new iPhones with almost no appreciable differences. What will the next iPhone offer? A slightly larger screen, UI upgrades stolen wholesale from Android, maps purchased from elsewhere, and most likely 4G. Nothing cutting edge and nothing that isn't already offered in a plethora of forms in other devices.
Granted, it will take some people time to break away, especially those heavily invested in iOS apps, but it will happen. If all Google offered from its Nexus line were the same phone year after year with only minor changes how many Android users would see any need to continually upgrade? If Android users had no choice but to buy a new device every two years so that it could actually function on the newest OS how many of us would continue to support them? Androids weak point has been manufacturers and carriers not getting the new Android versions out to devices, but as devs have made clear the hardware itself is plenty capable of utilizing whatever Google brings us. That's something that iOS can't claim. Heck, even a number of newer iDevices had major issues with iOS 5. Dinosaurs will die and Apple is sounding its own dirge by refusing to stay competitive and treating its customers like idiots.

I wouldn't quite say so.
Android can run widgets, live wallpaper, custom lockscreens, different launchers, change default apps like MMS/SMS, browser, dialer, camera, etc., out of the box no rooting required.
iOS needs to be jailbroken for those features. And they still don't have widgets, except for those "widgets" in the notification pulldown (which was a complete copy of Android 1.5).
The iPhone 5 will supposedly have a 4 inch screen. The original galaxy S phones from 2010 had 4 inch screens, and the OG Droid from 2009 had a 3.7 inch screen which is bigger than the current iPhone (4S).
Apple will fall soon. A couple of years give or take

Exactly. Androids strength is also a weakness. Variety and choice comes with a price. Apple's sole control over their device and OS allows them to easily roll out updates, whereas with Android, Google, in a way, is at the mercy of manufacturers and carries. Or perhaps it's the other way around?
So what if ICS and JB take while to get official support. Open source development takes care of that problem. In fact, I think it's safe to say that user/ community made ROMs are probably better than official releases.
my girlfriends sister's boyfriend has an Iphone, and he said he wants to get the new one. Now my girlfriends sister wants to get an Iphone also. Listen to the reasons behind their wants.
boyfriend - I want the new Iphone because I can easily sync my music from itunes
girlfriends sister - I want the new Iphone just because (we all know its because her boyfriend has one LOL)
is this really what apple has going for them? easy sync of music, same OS on every device, little bit bigger screen and a new maps app because they're mad at google for "stealing" from them? apple is a garbage company that over-prices everything and gives their customers a piece of **** in a box.
oh get this LOL also my girlfriends sister has had an IMac laptop or whatever you call it for a couple of years now, 2 times she had to change the hard drive. that is hella sad considering the hard drive is one and only piece of permanent storage pieces in a computer.

I totally agree. If someone can't figure out how to connect to wifi with an android phone, they're not going to magically figure it out if you hand them an iPhone. The process is the exact same no matter which platform you are on. I guess most people haven't tried ICS, because it is just as easy to use as any other OS.
In fact, in a few ways, Android is more user friendly. For example, making a ringtone from an mp3 is fairly easy on Android. Doing the same in iOS or WP7 is a nightmare. Managing music is easier if you know how to drag and drop into folders. Once they start putting NFC chips in bluetooth devices, pairing will be super easy for Android too.
iPhone screen size = 3.5" = $600
Android equivalents in terms of screen size:
Galaxy Y = 3.0" = <$30
LG Optimus Me = 2.8" = <$10
Lenovo A60 = 3.5" = <$30
See. ALL of the iPhones android equivalents are LOW END phones! They are all GB/FroYo! In terms of screen size, Apple needs to step up and release a 4.3" iPhone ASAP.

I also see the iPhone lagging behind its competition in the future. What game changers did Apple introduce to the iPhone
in the last years? FaceTime? lol
They can't come up with something special every time they release a new one. They are also very limited with the way they can
change the whole thing. It's no coincidence that they stuck with the same screen size for so long. If you make it bigger it's not
really "the iPhone" anymore. I think they are very careful with making such drastic changes which, as I said, limits their innovation.

Look everywhere on TV.... you see pretty much iPhones everywhere.
How did apple accomplish this? Advertising along with giving the new iPhone to some stars. Then they showoff their new iPhone. Same affect at my school... popular kids having the new iPhone and literally not putting it down to talk.
What Google must do
1.stop loading all of the bloatware on the carrier versions of Android. They don't on iPhone because they have a contract with them. Google needs to have carriers not have bloatware on to their Android phones. it would make android become more popular.
2. More stock android (like galaxy nexus)to make android slightly less complicated to learn for the advrage consumer
3.stop locking the boot loaders so people can easily install custom ROMs.
4. Get rid of the on-phone advertisements on play store apps. I mean the ones that have notification bar advertising crap(yes we could use an ad blocker but 90% of android goers don't know this)
5.make the stock ROMs more stable. Most people don't like android because it was very often buggy(I experienced this). Like the force close bugs, random reboots, ect
6. A good advertising campaign about the truth of apple. Let them know how to apple doesn't innovate.
7. Less phones. Too many phones that have android on them and some are not meant to run android or run it very laggy and slow
8. IPhone trade in. If they want android to spread then people need to dump there iphones.
9. Test drive android plan. To show the customer the advantages of android.
10. OTA updating. To fix bugs and even upgrade to a higher android os #
And even mention xda and how cool we are.

But yeah. A lot of what you say is already being done (at least for "hero phones" like the S3) or the oems already have an incentive to do so. I'm afraid that stuff like bootloaders or custom ROMs aren't very relevant to "popularity", that's only for our kind of folk.
A "phone mortgage regime" with prepaid options would, I think, go a long way toward 1) removing the market-distorting bundle BS that is the phone contract, and 2) [related] allowing people to make purchases at their true costs, while not forcing them to do so upfront.
Very good post but in my opinion most important thing to do are:
1# Make less quantity of phones lets say 4 MAX a year per manufacturer because many times people buy phones and then they don't get the updates and go back to iPhone (yes there are people like that)
2# Make Android on specific phone more stable they should polish and test it as much as possible so in the end every user will enjoy their phone and not being fed up with laggy/force close problems.
And 3# advertise Android and its unique features much as possible and also offer trade in's (awesome idea).
Point six is one that could make google look negative because they would be seen by some as putting apple down and it would be better to stick to showing what android can do rather than risk being seen as a bitter or sore "loser" attacking a strong competitor.

This stuff isn't up to Google. Google is only in charge of Nexus devices and making the Android source available. What OEMs do with Android is beyond the power of Google. In theory they could limit Gapps approval to devices following stricter standards, but this would cause some OEMs to find substitues for Gapps like Bing maps, Amazon app store, etc. It would just lead to more fragmentation instead of solving it. Remember since Android is open source it can be forked like Amazon did with the Kindle Fire.
I agree with many of the things you are saying but the OEMs and carriers are the ones that need to make the decisions.
If you buy an android phone you're usually stuck with what you bought, the OS version, bugs, application limitations - http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2412 - google don't care
Have you seen all the junk in the google app store and the number of apps which include advertisements? All one application does is copy a picture of a solar panel onto your screen!!!! The best thing google could do to the app store is add a filter to automatically delete any apps rated below 3* a few months after being published, and make the ratings apply only to the current version. Have you used Skype for android - awful?

I would say Android is great and has lots of customisation and most of the phones in the market come with android OS
wp8 is okay if you like to use your phone just for multimedia and calling and other stuff like windows stuff like XBL(XBoxLive)
Don't go for iOS as it has less customisation and the current iOS users are regretting having owned an iPhone
Blackberry is also a No Go unless you like BBM(But now bbm messenger is coming out for ios nd android as well so no point in buying BB devices)
cheers.

Ironically enough, I prefer Android because it is the only smartphone OS that follows the Windows model. People forget, but Microsoft OS's were not the first for personal computers. Apple was actually several years ahead of the game. The reason IBM PCs and DOS/Windows took over the world is because they allowed you to run any hardware and software you wanted, which quickly led to huge amounts of choices for both platforms.
Fast forward to smartphones. Apple, in typical Apple form, launches a totally locked down, walled garden phone. Zero customization of hardware (can't even add a memory card or replace the battery), zero root/admin access to the OS, zero ability to run iOS on non-Apple hardware, and zero ability to really change anything at all about the OS.
One would have hoped that Microsoft would have come onto the scene and in typical Microsoft fashion started releasing an OS that:
Can be installed onto any existing phone provided the drivers for the phone are in the huge Windows driver store.
Allows users to be admins if they want, giving them the ability to change system files and otherwise tweak the OS as needed.
Allows you to upgrade whenever a new version of Windows Phone comes out, in the same way I can upgrade my PC whenever a new version of Windows comes out (I don't have to wait 12 months for manufacturuer "support").
Allows you to install the OS onto any phone regardless of age, as long as the hardware is capable of supporting it (so if I want to use a 4 year old phone I can, even if the hardware manufacturer doesn't go past 2 years).
Allowed hardware venders huge flexibility to create compatible hardware and drivers for Windows Phone OS.
Allows user to be admin if they want (yes, I know I'm repeating this), so that they can uninstall ANY application they want, and are not forced to endure manufacturer installed bloatware. Remember PC bloatware? You could uninstall that. Not so Samsung or Sprint phone bloatware, for example, because they are considered "system" software. That Sprint NASCAR app? Yep, can't uninstall completely without root, because it's "essential". LOL.
Instead, Microsoft has completely lost their way and abandoned every principle that made Windows so successful in the first place. Now they are just copying Apple, with walled garden, closed systems like the Surface Tablet and Nokia phones that won't let you expand storage, change batteries, install new versions of the OS when you want, run as admin, uninstall bloatware, etc.
So ironically, Android, despite its faults, such as not allowing root/admin access to everyone, is nevertheless wiping the floor in marketshare, because it is following most of the original Microsoft principles of open systems rather than walled gardens. It allows for massive hardware variety, the OS is open enough that you can customize it and throw different mods onto phones, you can gain root access and you can uninstall bloatware too . So in my opinion, Android is the better platform by far, because it's following the Microsoft way. (And if you look at the market share of phones, Samsung, which follows the Microsoft way with hardware by allowing SD cards and battery replacements, is also by far the most successful. It pays to be flexible and open).
One other note: Android is the only platform where you can run a phone for four years and still have basically the latest and greatest. I'm rocking a Samsung Galaxy S2 with Android 4.4.4 Kitkat because I can install CyanogenMod onto my phone, even though Samsung abandoned the phone after two years. That's not going to happen with Windows Phone. The manufacturer will abandon you after two years, and you won't be able to install the new version of Windows Phone onto your hardware, even if your hardware is fast enough. That's another point in favor of Android.
damn dude...well put!
It also depends If you are interested in changing your ROM or in general changing your mobile phone. Then take android. Otherwise if you are interested in a beautiful design then use w8
Simple question, but I'm interested in hearing the unique reasons why YOU prefer Android over iOS, if you do, haha!
Android is better when using Google service
So many reasons...
- iTunes. If I record a bit of music I play, cut out a section and set it as a ringtone, that's all that's required on an Android. On an iPhone.. I'd have to record the file. Import it to iTunes, export it to the phone. Cut out the segment. Import it to iTunes, export it to the Phone, and only then can I set it as a ringtone. That's ridiculous.
- Choices. I want to decide my settings and options. I don't need Apple to tell me what I can and can't do.
- Multitasking. iOS still can't truly multitask.
- Continuing on that theme, Spen with Penwindow. If you've ever used it, you'll know what I mean with true multitasking and Apple's restricted system.
- Customisability. I'm a designer. I want my phone to looks the way I like it, not the way Apple has decided it should look, exactly the same as every other iPhone user.
- Zooper, Themes, Icons, Colours...
- Live Wallpapers. The thing that wows every Apple user I speak to. I'm using Forest HD, a living forest. You don't get such modern things on an iPhone.
- Specifications. Have you seen the specifications in an iPhone 6? They're equal to those in a 2012 Note 2. And people are paying 1000 quid for such outdated rubbish?
- Design. I think iPhones are, and always have been, abysmal. Like a 60 quid Toys'r'us phone, the ones they sold with candy in it before Apple came with a smartphone.
More customization on android.
Apple is too damn expensive.
You pay extra for that apple symbol on the back, not for better hardware.
That to me is rediculous.
there was a portal discussion just a week ago about that...
The first of all is that Android is open.
I have a choice to get an app from Amazon Appstore, Play Store, or any else I like.
And I can easily install apps developed by myself to my smart devices.
......
Android is an open source operating system which is Linux based. In whole world, many users are commonly using Android phones compared the iOS. Several phones based on Android are available in different size, price and features. But iOS is only adopted by Apple devices. The Lollipop is the latest version of Android OS.
I can't afford any iOS phone :crying: But anyway, i love Android because of it customizability of course

Several phones based on Android are available in different size, price and features. But iOS is only adopted by Apple devices. The Lollipop is the latest version of Android OS.

This is not completely true. Only AOSP is open source. Many versions of android are completely closed sourced.
Android is cheaper? More free apps?
I'd like to try iOS if I have enough money :crying:
Simple. With Android, we have XDA And with iOS..... I think I would have to google that. XD
I have used ios 5 to 7 on my iphone 4s but about 8 months ago i switched to android with a galaxy s4. And I can tell you that it was the best choice ever. The galaxy s4 was very fast even with touchwizz even faster thn the current iphone at the time but after some time i flashed a google play edition rom and i just shat my pants right there. But this is ofcourse all personal preferences.
I prefer android for many reason, i.e. it is an open os, many free app and especially you have a great choice of devices!
Mostly for the ability to debug and release apps without paying a $99/year fee. I'm just a poor college student, and having to spend $99/year just to debug apps is a bit overkill. Overall, however, iOS apps still seem to be of better quality than Android ones.
I dont want to pay for an apple which is not in shape
