hi all
just got my transformer (tf101 wifi only) back from asus after repair - looks like they changed the firmware to 8.6.6.9 but I thought this was for the 3G version only.
am I wrong and 8.6.6.9 was for all products?
thanks

It's 8.6.5.9 and yes, it's for all models, though not available in Japan yet.

no. It says 8.6.6.9 in the firmware (not 8.6.5.9). So my question still stands. I thought this was for 3g models only.
Yea you are correct, the non 3G firmware is still 8.6.5.9
The 3G Firmware is 8.6.6.9
Another member on the TF Forums says he managed to flash the 3G FW to his non 3G TF and it flashed and booted, but had issues

thanks. Looks like Asus screwed up and flashed the wrong firmware. It works fine but I just wanted update to the latest to get the cursor and browser improvements.

It doesn't really matter which firmware you put on a wifi model. So far they all seem to work fine. They have the right drivers and profiles necessary to function normally (gps, wifi, etc). But if you want the telephony, etc. working, on a 3G model, you definitely need a 3G supported firmware.
Mine was also repaired (came back Thursday) and now it's 8.6.6.9. And it's not 3G. Nothing seems majorly updated.

I took your advice and called Asus and asked "WTF?". They didn't say much but went off to slap someone around and said they would call me back.

I guess the only option is to do a full install of stock 3.2 (ww) then? How does one go about doing this?
Or: surely the 3G version gets the same firmware updates, but with a different schedule? Maybe leave it as it is?

LOL. I bet someone's hand is tired of slapping those repair foolios around. I will cringe if I ever have to send mine in to those knuckleheads...
Mine also came back with that version... 8.6.6.9 on tf101 not 3g...

Decided to reinatall with zerofeels full stock firmware from this site. Then got ota update and fixed all settings, the tf was back to correct firmware in about 1.5 hours. No biggie.
I tried this (asus asked me to) but for the life of me I can't get the transformer to recognize there is a firmware update on the sd card. It just doesn't see it. I've unzipped the update so that the "asus" directory is in the root folder of the sd card.
any ideas?

lol... alright!!! the first thing you did wrong was take my advice you say you are running 8.6.6.9 ( that was released 8/12/2011 for the TF101G) and that does not have the dock update 0213. They did another update on 8/25/2011 for the TF101G which brings it to 8.6.6.10 and that does have the new dock firmware...bla bla bla....
I just nvflashed stock WW 8.6.6.9 and was able to upgrade (asus's way with the microsd card) to WW 8.6.6.10 and it worked (I didn't think it was going too work). Asus's way of upgrading http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePAD/TF101G/e6754_TF101_Update_SOP.pdf (page 4)
It doesn't get you back to the TF101 firmware, but at least you'll be up to date until asus gets back to you . I hope they can help you out without another RMA

Need to be on 8.6.6.19 for Razorclaw to work.
Someone stated they were able to downgrade but he never elaborated on how he did it.

Hey !
I tried to download the file named UpdtaeLauncher_WW_epad_8.6.6.19 (or something like that..) I found in the thread you linked. I downloaded a zip, and copied it in my internal storage, and rebooted, but nothing changed, and there isn't any downgrade.. Where do I need to copy the file, and do I have to unzip it ?
Thanks a lot !!

Well,I tried everything I could,it doesnt downgrade my transformer..too bad.. I think I will have to wait untill another way to root my device..
Thanks a lot for your help !

i think you need the files you wish to flash copied to your external storage from what I read while rooting my B70 and flashing with PRIME 2.1.1 and netformer 1.6, they all had to be on a micro SD to flash.. (???)
The downgrade isn't working for me either - B70, US, .21
I renamed the file in the dev threads to US_epad-user-8.6.6.19 (no zip), rebooted, it said there was an update with the triangle, it runs, but then goes to the Android with the triangle in the middle, then when rebooting it reverts back and loads and states the software does not match the upgrade file.
I'd like to post this in the dev thread, but I don't have 10 posts yet :lame:
not working with .23
I tried all variants for downgrading from my 8.6.6.23 (BA0, TF101G) found in the threads for .21, but it does not work at all.
The update starts, but then the little android with the yellow warning sign shows up and the .23 version keeps on rolling...
i think we have to wait... damn you asus: why don't you just let me root MY device. I bought it - i didn't rent it !?!?
Thanks toeveryone who took the time to anwear my question.. Especially stch, I've ben led to the same conclusion, but didn't want to believe it.. But, finnlaly, I have to understand that it now impossible.. I'll have to wait :/
Thanks you everybody !

Use nachoroot, it works great

pjfriend's alternate root method has worked for me. It allowed me to revert from .21 to .19 and then root using Razorclaw. I was having trouble at first, as I have just gotten my transformer. A note to you, when getting in to recovery, after you see the green NVidia logo, that's when you hit the volume up knocker. Not when you see the two square boxes that have 'factory wipe' and an Android there.

If NachoRoot worked, there's no need to revert from .21 to .19 to use RazorClaw.
NachoRoot should have rooted your TF.

Hi there XDA community,
I would like to know if there is an up-to-day tutorial that has working file links? I would like to upgrade, root, and unlock my Xoom. I just bought a Motorola Xoom from 1saleaday.com the Model is an MZ601 and says "approved by IDA for use in Singapore" it is currently just as is and is not unlocked or rooted. I would like to get it upgraded, unlocked, and rooted so I can use it for what I got it for. It has WiFi and Data service that supports WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, ATO_ITEM: AP1520AD3X3. It is currently running on Android Honeycomb 3.0.1, build number H.6.1-38-9. If you any ideas, files, links, tutorials (up-to-day), or can help, that would be great!
Thanks InfiniteImmortal.
P.S.
Here are the configurations;
Model Number: MZ601
Android version: 3.0.1
Firmware: GAS_ASIA_USAEVRSTURTIRD_P016
Baseband version: N_014.83.28P
Baseband configuration: UCAEVEUB1B8EU034.0R
Kernel: 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
Build Number: H.6.1-38-9
More specs will be provided if they are needs, thanks again II!
yeah, there are tons of tutorials, relatively up to date. Relatively, because the new method to root xyboards might work for classic xooms too. This method would not require you to unlock your xoom for rooting and thus allow titanium backup to backup all your data before unlocking and thus wiping your xoom.

Okay I will go and read these threads, but are you for sure they work on the EU models? I have read on many different sites and threads that say the normal way of rooting, unlocking, and upgrading for US models have bricked the EU ones to were they did not work anymore. This is one reason why I'm looking for an up-to-date threads that say they work with the EU models. If you could clarify more that would be great.

That is weird. I have never read a thread about a brick that occured using the method I (and others) described. Could you maybe post a link to such a thread?
To Clarify this: the Unlock should impose absolutely no risk at all as it is a feature implemented by motorola. The recovery, even if it didn't work, wouldn't lead to a brick. And the universal xoom root should not do any magic either, it should only add two files to the filesystem (su and Superuser.apk) and remove those files that would make your new shiny recovery go byebye once booted
Ty my knowledge, only the "flashing a custom rom" part is a source of bricking. And that can easily be avoided by flashing a MZ601-rom instead of something else
That said, nobody can guarantee you that this is completely safe. There is a thread right next door with a poor guy whose xoom bricked itself overnight. That was a wifi-xoom, and so far no one knows why that happened. We're still working on a solution, though

yes, you will be able to go back to the original rom and lock your bootloader again. If you do that, you will be able to get ota updates (if you really want to do so, usually custom roms are ahead of the ota-updates)
You should make a backup of your xoom right after starting the new recovery, even before rooting. That will give you a set of files that, if you restore them, will reset your xoom back to stock, thus you'll only have to re-lock your bootloader to get ota-updates

Custom ROM Files
Hey llama-power,
You say in your thread post that "If you already downloaded your new rom, put that onto the sdcard as well, it should be a flashable .zip-file".
Do you by chance have the links to these files? I know I.C.S. is the latest one, but I'm happy with an old one if it is stable. Or if you have a custom ROM for the Xoom that would be great. I have a Samsung Captivate generation 1 that I use Firefly or Cognition on, along with the original stock ROM as backup just in case. Any links or files would be very cool!

A few more question, yes I know MORE questions! haha. Where is the backup I make stored at? I would like to put it in my backups folder for the Xoom under its drive in my computer. Currently the 3G data service is still not working on it, but is recognizing AT&T network. It says "Mobile Network State: Disconnected" just like before and suggestions? Other then that I also still don't have access to the micro SD card in Android, but can access it in the Recovery.
I now think its time for a new platform, NO more Honeycomb 3.0.1! If you have any suggestions your more than welcome to say or suggest just like for the other posts!

I am using the team eos nightlies. Works really nicely except deep-sleep isn't working for me while wifi is enabled. Don't know if that is a rom-issue though, might be some app I use. Anyways, it's not really a problem to me, battery life is still more than sufficient.
You can get the team EOS nightlies for your xoom (MZ601 / umts_everest / EU-3G) from this thread. Download the latest nightly build and the latest G-Apps package (thats the Google Mail, Market, etc. apps) from the link in the same thread. Put those onto your sdcard and flash them from recovery. Wipe /data, /cache and dalvik-cache first, then install the rom, then the g-apps package and finally reboot. Do not reboot between the steps. When upgrading from one nightly to another omit wiping /data.

on your sdcard: $SDCARD$/clockworkmod/backup/$DATE_AND_TIME_OF_YOUR_BACKUP$. just copy that entire folder, it contains many .img-files (one for each partition) plus another file for checksums. You will need all those files for a restore. You may, however, rename the directory.

Just to let you know I'm using the ROM you recommended and I love it so far. well, there are a couple of sources for a stock rom. For one, your sd-card should contain one (I restored my backup yesterday and yes, it even reset the recovery to stock)...
Also, motorola offers some filesystem images at http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/, but you'll need to register with them to get to the download (should be free, though)
Finally, it might be desirable to have some .sbf-file for your xoom. Those can be flashed using a software called rsd lite, even when you aren't able to enter your recovery system. Doesn't always work, so it's not more than a Hail Mary move... However, Motorola does a lot to keep these files from floating around the web, so I won't be able to provide you with a link.
As always thanks for the keen insight. Just came across a few threads that perked my interest. Have you ever tried to get working SMS text messaging and voice calling on the Xoom? Since I'm using the SIM from my phone to do the data I was hoping there might be a way. I haven't done a lot of reading on this yet but you seem to know everything.

nope. The sim inside my xoom is on the same contract as the sim in my phone and I had to pick one that would receive texts. Naturally, since I always carry my phone, that's where the texts go, so the xoom wouldn't ever receive a text ever anyways. Voice calling is currently not possible on the xoom. So the only upside of that would be that I could send texts using the xoom, but that isn't so much better than texting on my Desire HD. Plus, that would tear apart the messaging threads between my phone and the xoom.
However, there's a thread in the xoom development section where flashable zip-files are published for every eos nightly, you should be able to just flash that over your rom and thus enable texting.
Actually, I might try that some time, but right now I should really learn for that exam on friday:-/

Unzip it to get the zip file from inside and put it on your external sd card. Boot into recovery and let it flash the ROM again.
Plenty of thread to show step by step if needed.
You could also try to adb push the original file to your tf

i've already tried this. it just gives me the dead android with a red exclamation point. also for some reason my windows pc says "the device cannot start" and im unable to use adb.
What is the serial number of your tf?
Hopefully it's one that's nvflash compatible

dont think it is, starts with B90
i think the mods rudely removed my post in general forum where i was actually getting some help, but whatever. still need help here if anyone has any ideas.
I think you have several options-
1) use adb to fix your build.prop file. This can be done in the rom or recovery. There are adb guides coming out of the woodworks on here. If windows doesn't recognize your device, then get linux or a mac and kick windows to the curb. Nothing but grief.
2) install the correct build.prop via a flashable zip. You can extract the build.prop from the system dump I have in the dev section. Yeah, it's a slow download, but I'm working on something to move it to a faster server.
There's no easy fix... yet. adb will be the "easiest" fix.

ok well heres the issue. earlier way early this morning when this first started i was able to adb in, saw it was going in an infinite loop in logcat. now for some reason windows, and i've tried 3 installations of it, says the device cannot start. to me it sounds like something weird with the device. any ideas?
The exact same thing happened to me. I booted into recovery and restored from a nandroid backup. Maybe their is a way you can still install recovery and you someone can lend you their nandroid?

i think its too late for that now, adb wont work. im guessing now maybe the recovery isnt working because i had a newer version of the os than i can get a copy of right now. anyone have/know where i can get 9.2.1.17 fw?
If he is getting the dead android, it sounds like he has a stock recovery.
regarding adb, if windows won't start, then get a linux live cd. I think rebound128 has a minimal one in the dev section for nvflash rooting, but it will probably work. Or you can download a ubuntu live cd and boot from there.
one other option would be to wait until asus releases the 9.2.1.17 firmware on their site and download that. You should be able to flash it without the dead android. the 8.6.5.21 won't work because it won't let you install to a previous version. You can only install your current version or later. In your case, that would be 9.2.1.17.
At this point, I would say that windows is holding you back. I wish I had a $1 for every person that gets screwed over by windows- I would be as rich as Bill Gates used to be.

im hearing that from everyone i talk to but in this case i dont think its windows thats causing the problem. like i said, i've tried THREE different installations of windows, and none of them pick up the tablet properly, they see "ASUS Android MTP Device" for some reason, and then it says that device isnt working properly. im probably just gonna wait till asus releases the new firmware. that will definately work....right?

just tried it on linux, adb wont detect the device, so no luck there. im just hoping the .17 firmware will work on it, if not idk what to do.
In linux, with the TF plugged into the USB, what do you get when you type "lsusb" ??

it had Asus Transformer or something like that, it had it listed, but thats all. couldnt interact with the device.
Perhaps adb/debugging is not activated in the rom?
I think you'll have to wait until Asus releases a new update, although the last update checked the md5 sum of the build.prop file, so if you made any changes it won't flash.

Sorry for the confusion- I think the full 9.2.1.17 rom that asus posts on their website will work, as long as it checks the rom version in recovery default.prop. It's not clear to me how it checks the "rule" that prevents downgrading. It's a maybe, but there's still a chance.

I guess you have to choose between the devil and a hard place with TeamEOS JellyBean ROMS. I have a Verizon 3G Xoom, and it seems I can choose between wifi or 4G or Euro 3G. Well I would like to have wifi and Verizon 3G, but it doesn't seem possible.
Going to TeamEOS's site I follow links to the roms themselves, but there is no indication of how to decode the secret name of my device.
Amazingly there is no explanation in the OPs for these ROMs.
And IRC is dead.
I didn't understand well your question, but I will put here the name of all devices:
Wingray - Wifi only Xoom (Grey back)
Stingray - Verizon Xoom (If I'm not wrong black back)
Everest - Europe 3G Xoom (White/Silver back)
It looks like your is a MZ600, that was called Stingray before the 4g update, I'm not sure if you can flash the 4g ROM as you're on 3g, but you can try and tell if worked or not, if it doesn't work flash back another ROM
Good luck
Thank you. I was being a bit sarcastic, in my frustration.
So Stingray will allow wifi -and- 3g to work on the US Verizon Xoom? It appears that Stingray is only for 4G?
Looks like I can't go back, as stingray_cdma no longer exists.
Is there anything that doesn't work with this ROM? wifi teathering?

Well, sorry but that I don't know... I have a MZ605 which is the same as MZ601, and have no idea about the stingray... Why don't you find someone with the same device and ask this person

That person does not exist. I've looked everywhere, including #xoom and #teameos on IRC.
None of the recoveries work, so I can't even get to a ROM.
It seems this device is dead.

(silly questions ahead)
You are rooted right? What recoveries did you try to install? TWRP? Rogue?
Where/when did you get the xoom? Are you using the 3g?
It isn't a xyboard right?
NO I am not rooted. All the xoomroot.zip's have been removed from the internet.
NO I do not have any recovery installed, because laying them down has no effect. Boot into recovery and it's the dead android. I've tried three of them. (solarnz, Steady, dreamcwii)
My son gave me the Xoom, and I don't know how long he's had it. I am not using the 3G, but if I sell it I'd like to at least have it available.
No it is not an xyboard. It is a 600.

Why won't this help you??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468298
That is XxLordxX's One stop shop tool for the xoom. It unlocks and relocks the bootloader, It root's, unroots.. etc. etc.
If you aren't using the 3g, you CAN just flash a wifi ROM, and it will work. You would need the original image or a ROM that supports 3g to restore it. If you unlocked and rooted, then installed a recovery, and performed a backup of your xoom on the stock ROM before changing it... you would be fine if you wanted to sell it. Restore the original stock image then unroot and relock the bootloader.

Yes tried that too. (Linux) Ran his RunThisOnce tool, and all files disappeared. Examined the script and it's supposed to put them in ~/LAIOT, but unfortunately it does not. When I manually move the directory, most of its subdirs are empty, and there's no clue where to start. Tried LAIOT, but it is nowhere in the run path.

So at this point you are just looking for the universal root zip so you can try it manually?
That would help.
But I can not understand why installing any CWM recovery does not work. This is simply a show stopper.

If you thank me, make sure you thank solarnz, it's his work, I just happened to have it lying around. If you aren't rooted, you aren't gonna get a CWM to stick, and bootloader unlocked as well.
Thanks but no idea what to do with that. I don't have CWM so can't install it that way. It won't work with adb or fastboot. No idea what version it is, or whether it will work with current ROMs.
This is the way things have gone here.

The root worked with any update for sure through ICS, I doubt you are on jellybean and it would probably work on that. If you didn't have the zip itself before, how do you know it doesn't work with adb?
This is the perspective thread that I originally got the zip file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242241
Anyways, Good luck, I will leave the zip in dropbox for another day or two in case you change your mind
I am -sure- I am not on jellybean, because I have not been able to flash it. None of the recoveries actually flash to the tablet, so there is of course no way I can use it to run JB.
