How Do I Change MMS Settings In Windows Phone 7.5 Mango? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've bought a Samsung Focus S and unlocked it as well as updated the APN info. However, I can't find out how to update the MMS settings. Is there a way to do this or am I SOL?
(I've read you can edit the settings in the XML files, but I'd prefer to avoid that if possible as I'm not sure what the correct instructions are to do that. If someone has them please post them!)

Surely someone knows how to do this? Why would MS make this setting so hard to change?
I just tried this:
xxx.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-enable-mms-on-samsung-focus-samsung-omnia-7-guide/
but unfortunately it doesn't work. ##634## will get you into the Diagnosis (ver.0923) menu, however once I type 40*047#3 nothing happens. Next to the numbers entered there's a circle with a horizontal line in the middle, however when I hit that it just erases the last number I entered. There's no other buttons to hit so I'm guessing something should happen automatically.

Bueller?!?!?!

Following my directions in thread 20634899 post #43. Make sure to read the whole thread as well as it gives some insight on the files you can use.

What kind of phone do you have? If it's a Samsung like the OP, it's a piece of cake. Read my guide for the Focus here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614107&referrerid=2943819 it has been reported to work on the Focus S as well. I can confirm the Focus and the Omnia7, both of which I owned. If you have a Dell Venue Pro, it's even easier. Go to EM (##634#) and do your thing under "MMS Settings".

Motorola Q9h Speed Dial help...

Hey everyone,
I am not sure where else to turn at this point but xda... I had an AT&T Tilt that I had modded quite well to my liking, but then I lost it. So I had to revert back to my old Motorola Q9h. There are a few quirks about reverting back to a smartphone from a PPC that are bugging me. Like how I can't find anything like bitpim to back up all my text messages so I can upgrade to 6.1. I have a lot of text messages, some that I need to retain in case some legal dispute happens in the future with my ex. Anyway, that's minor, I can live with 6.0 for now. Threaded messaging would be the only real benefit for me and it's not a must have in this case.
Anyway, on to the reason I am posting. I don't know what happened with my speed dial function but for some reason, my 1 key does not link to my voicemail anymore. I don't have the default voicemail contact that comes with the phone and I don't have a clue what happened to it. I tried creating a new contact with the voicemail number and assigning it to the appropriate speed dial button, but it says 1 and 0 are "Reserved". I have searched numerous forums for some help with this to no avail.
So I decided to try and see if I could figure it out myself (sounds ominous, I know, I know, but I haven't changed anything yet, don't worry ). I sat at work today, bored out of my mind, and decided to just look through the phone to at least pinpoint the location of the speed dial contents in the registry. The only thing I have found that sounds promising is located at:
HKCU\ControlPanel\Dial\Locations\
BUT... I don't read or write in this language. I could also be in the completely wrong location. Any guidance from this point onwards would be greatly appreciated. If you need any more details, please ask.

2 great programs I downloaded for the Sprint Touch Pro2

Hi guys!
Was poking around online, and found this page: http://www.phonedog.com/cell-phone-research/blog/part-1-guide-to-windows-mobile.aspx . It lists a few great programs (many of which have been developed by you folx here at xda). There are two phenomenal ones that work quite well on my TP2.
The first is the SD card tuneup. I don't know why, but it seems to make my WHOLE PHONE go faster. I love it.
The second is the advanced configuration utility. A great way to access tons of settings to better tweak your phone.
Hope it helps you guys as much as it does me.
Warning for verizon users
Be very careful here and learn from my mistake. I did the reg edit from the linked page for increasing the threaded sms space. I copied the file over to my PC, made the edit, pasted back and reset. When I went into text messages and clicked "all messages" it wouldn't open. I hit reply and it wouldn't open. They only way I could send a text was either from favorites or contacts. I still had the original file so I pasted it back reset but but still f'ed up. I finally had to hard reset to fix it.
Another Warning
I would recommend not using the Advanced Configuration program on CDMA phones. Apparently some settings are just different enough to cause weird problems, one of which is being unable to answer an incoming call. (had that happen on my mogul), still see threads warning about using it on CDMA TP2, so be ready to hard reset if you do decide to try it out.
Advanced Config Tool on Sprint TP2
Thank you last poster on the issue with CDMA and Advanced Configuration Utility. I've been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out why I'm having so much trouble answering the phone. Sometimes I can answer, sometimes not. I've also noticed a few other strange behaviors like not getting the pop up "snooze" message I used to get when using the phones built in alarm.
Looks like my only way of not only removing the ACU but also fixing these problems is a hard reset? That seriously sucks, but at least I have a potential for getting these functions working again.

[Q] Need APN Settings Galaxy S 4G

Would someone be able to supply me with the APN settings for my Galaxy S 4g? This idiot just deleted his. I thought something was wrong with my phone because I had lost all ability to use packet data over anything but Wi-Fi. So while troubleshooting I deleted the default without backing it up. I did figure out why I lost data though. Did you know T-Mobile expects you to pay them EVERY month? The wife thought I paid it and I thought she had.
It's paid now, but I can't find anything here or on google that references that they are specifically for SGS4G. Does it matter? Can I use any?
BTW, if anyone knows any alternate config for APN that claims improved speeds I may as well use those. Never wanted to before because I'm satisfied with my speed, but since I'm adding them back....
Have you tried reseting APN to defaults?
Press the Menu Key
Tap on Settings
Tap on Wireless and network
Tap on Mobile networks
Tap on Access point names
Press the Menu Key and tap on Reset to Default
Don't know if that will work for ya... but other than that you have to call tmobile/yourmobilecarrier to get the settings.

I'm not at my computer right now. But go to the vibrant section and look for the think tank removing data throttle thread. Or Google T-Mobile apn settings and manually enter them on the phone.

Thanks to golmar n blackphnx for the reply, I had googled and found some before posting, but wasn't sure if I it was one size fits all. I tried what you suggested Golmar and it worked except I needed to take a couple more steps beyond your post. You got me in the right direction though. If any other boneheads ever does the same as me, follow the below:
1. Follow steps given by Golmar in post 2 to get to your APN settings but you won't have restore defaults when selecting menu (system won't let you if you do not have any APN. Only can choose to create a new one or cancel from the pop up)
2. What you will see if you have no APN stored is it goes directly to a dialogue asking if you want to create a new one or cancel. Say yes and you get a full form asking for all the detailed APN info (If you say no/cancel it exits back to the previous menu).
3. Enter Name (doesn't matter what) and then epc.tmobile.com in the APN field don't know if you need APN, but I put it in.
4. Now, when you select menu you will have option to Save or Discard. Select Save.
5. Saving brings you to the screen you normally would see to select default APN or another one if you had created. (If you just went through these steps you should see just 1 named whatever you entered in step 3.)
6. At this point you can select menu and choose to restore defaults. Your default APN will return and the dummy just created will be removed.
Good to know!

[SMS INCREASE] REMOVE the 160+ SMS Limit on WP7 for HTC Arrive GOLD_C

THIS METHOD IS DEPENDANT OF THE TOWERS NEAR YOU. PLEASE READ THE END OF THIS POST TO SEE A QUOTE FROM LEADPOIZON ABOUT THIS.
Alright, after searching time and time again. Trying time and time again... And Failing time and time again... (jejeje) I was finally successful at sending multiple messages through the HTC Arrive... I feel so stupid for not trying this as one of the first things but hey... You gotta deal with your own stupidity at times ... jejeje.
Anyway, what you guys have been waiting for...
HOW TO REMOVE THE 160 CHARACTER SMS LIMIT ON WP7
(I can only try this on the HTC Arrive as I do NOT have any other WP7 device)
I HAVE TESTED THIS ON ANSAR's CUSTOM ROM'S (16.04 TANGO V1 8773) DFT's CUSTOM ROM (Freedom V1) LEADPOIZONS ROMS (ALREADY INCLUDED IN SETTINGS ON BOTH 7.5 AND 7.8 ROMS) SIANTOS ROM (WP7.8 ALL)
BUT AS OF NOW, ITS DEPENDANT ON THE COMMUNICATION TOWERS NEAR YOU
Use the included REGISTRY EDITOR on EITHER ROM's to edit entree:
1.) Go to HKLM\Comm\Cellular\SMS\Router\CDMA and change the Contantenation entry from a 0 to a 1
2.)Select the EXIT from the Registry Editor
3.) Go to your text messages and try to send a 161+ character text message to YOURSELF
DEPENDING ON YOUR LOCATION, YOU MAY RECEIVE THE MULTIPLE MESSAGE... IF YOU DONT, CONTINUE TO HOPEFULLY TROUBLESHOOT
4.) REBOOT YOUR PHONE!!!
5.) Once your phone is back up, go back to the text hub and click on RETRY SEND to send the text message.(This message will leave this time with no response from the Messaging App.)
***WAIT A MINUTE OR TWO TO RECEIVE THE MESSAGE, IF YOU DONT RECEIVE THEN FOLLOW THE NEXT STEP***
6.) Go back to your text hub and TYPE A NEW 161+ character message and try to send yourself again. This time you should receive 2+ messages after going through the network.
You can combine this tweak with my unlimited MMS size tweak and you are good to go!!! You can now have unlimited SMS characters and MMS size... jejeje
(For the MMS post, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1606865 )
THERE YOU GO... 160+SMS MESSAGE IS POSSIBLE THROUGH WP7... HTC ARRIVE... THANKS GO OUT TO ANSAR AND DFT FOR THE ROMS AND A SPECIAL THANKS TO LEADPOIZON FOR ALL THE HELP.
`-`-`-`-`-`UPDATE REGARDING THE COMM TOWERS, IF YOU HAVE ISSUES, PLEASE READ`-`-`-`-`-`
SINCE THERE HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT SUCCESS STORIES/FAILURES WITH THIS TWEAK WE HAVE BEEN PURSUING A "GLOBAL" FIX... JEJEJE. AFTER MUCH TESTING, LEADPOIZON CAME UP WITH WHAT WE THINK MAY BE FINAL RESULTS...
leadpoizon said:
MY FINAL RESULTS:
This method is dependent on the towers near you, because of the following*:
Some Mobile Phone Operating Systems are designed to split up texts whens they are sent over the 160 character limit before they are sent to the network (even dumb phones can do this). Windows Phone does not seem to have this capability, it sends your message in its' entirety to the network and hopes that the network can sort it out into split texts. The problem is, not all Sprint towers seem to support this. For that reason, Sprint completely disabled the option to send a text over 160 characters.
When you know this method will work**:
1. Make the registry Edit (Reboots is not really needed, WP dynamically monitors the registry, it seems.)
2. Send yourself a text over the 160 characters. (It should allow you to after the registry edit.)
3. The text will give you an error either instantly or in a few minutes.
4. Reboot, if you want (just to be sure.). Then, resend the same text.
5. It will send without errors and you should receive the content back in more than one text. Done.
When you know this method will NOT work**:
1. Make the registry Edit (Reboots is not really needed, WP dynamically monitors the registry, it seems.)
2. Send yourself a text over the 160 characters. (It should allow you to after the registry edit.)
3. The text will not give you an error. After a LONG time (an hour or so, you will get the error.)
4. During the time between you sending the text and receiving the error, your MMS and SMS will be broken and you most likely will not receive or be able to send texts.
5. Reboot your phone and things should be back to normal. Change the registry back to default value to avoid making an accidental text over 160 characters. Go yell at MS and Sprint.
* Only speculation after my trials
** YMMV

I've tried this registry key before without success, but I tried your directions anyway. I'm running the DFT Freedom ROM, but I never get the first "can't send" message. After rebooting, I can send texts like normal until I try to send one that is 161+ characters long. Then all messages fail to send, regardless of length until I reboot again. There has to be some other setting or registry key change that you have which, in combination with he CDMAConcatenation entry, allows it to work on your handset. I believe you did it, we just need to figure out what the magic combination is!

I would agree with you except that I have reset the phone (Even FULL FACTORY RESET WITH ANSAR's)... Flashed to DFT and tried it, then flashed back into ANSAR's rom and tried it again... It worked when I did exactly the top... For some reason... I litteraly made this the ONLY edit on those ROM's to ensure it worked... and it did...
EDIT 1: And you did follow to the letter correct? No other texts until the process was done? I am currently downloading a STOCK ROM... I will flash to it and try, then I will flash back and report my findings... Again, as of now, I have been able to follow the directions I have posted and been successful 100% of the times...
I can't follow to the letter because I never get the "can't send" message. Otherwise, yes, I've followed the instructions exactly. No other texts incoming or outgoing besides the ones in your instructions.
I wonder if it's dependent on a setting at the tower or on the account within Sprint's systems that allows this?

I was thinking thesame thing... to an extent... You know how Microsoft was resetting devices as they were being unlocked? That is, once you synched with their server, your unlock would be gone...
When I first tried this it did not work... I gave up that day and came back to it yesterday... I have to say that the tweak was in my system for at least 24hrs... maybe there is something that has now bypassed this on MY particular account? I dont know...
Also: I just flashed a stock (Well not unlocked/tweaked/or anything) ROM and did a full factory reset, then I updated my PROFILE and PRL just to make sure that no settings were left on the phone from the previous flash. I then proceeded to flash the DFT ROM and all I had to do was the registry edit, when I went to the messaging... I sent the 161+ sms...
I dont know... Id have to say something flicked the switch... on one side or the other... Would you mind checking tomorrow throughout the day to see if this may be the issue...
If this is the issue, it makes sense why nobody had found it yet, they did the edit and did not let it get "registered" in their phone??? jejeje... Too many questions... jejeje
Interesting theory. I'll keep the setting on and try again tomorrow to see if there is any change. Thanks for the help!
Worked on my Ansar 8773 V1 install! Thanks! Only complaint I had with this phone up to now.

Yeah, I just wish I knew why it wasn't working for dandrayan. Not enough to flash DFT Freedom to my Arrive though
Thanks Man. It worked for me without rebooting on dft. I made the change, and tried to send a 161 test to myself. It sent fine with no error and I received both texts within a minute. Thanks!
Awesome work! Now to release a ROM.
Cant wait to see what you bring to the table man! Thanks again.
I'm using the Ansar v1 rom and this reg edit doesn't work for me. Does it depend on area? I'm in the north jersey. When I try to send a message to myself longer than 160+ characters, I either get no reply whatsoever or I get the following error "can't send message Try again".
Any suggestions? I tried rebooting.. updating prl.. updating network profile.. doesn't work for me.

when u get this msg...
1.) REBOOT the phone.
2.) Go back to sms and click retry... it should go but no response for a while...
3.) type new 161+ sms and send to yourself again.
Let me know.
EDIT: And I know you probably have tried this but just give it a shot again... Also, go back to the registry and re-edit the string, save again and click MENU then EXIT to leave the application. REBOOT and try to re-send

Yep, ive been texting more now that the limit is gone... I dont have to worry about my limit being reached... So ive been sending multiple part messages to everyone... jejeje
Anyway, to be safe and to hold some proof (not that I need it... jejeje) here is a picture of my HTC Arrive (left) and my wife's Evo 3D (right). I sent a 3 part message and she received every one of the pieces... I made sure my phone had nothing on it (yes, reset it AGAIN... jejeje) as you can still see the RED accent color... jejeje...

Cool, thanks. There must be some reason why I can't get it to work.
Time to find out why... Did you have to do that procedure after you reset the device to factory settings, or did you just do the registry change and that was it?

Just went to the REGISTRY and changed it... That was it. Didnt have to do the procedure after the first couple of times that I tried it... I do have to say that whe I try it I do it with a CLEAN INSTALL... I dont know if that is the difference in my success since I flash the ROM squeaky clean and do the edit from the beginning (since I have been testing didnt want something else to mess with this...)
Dont know what is the issue... Some people have reported to be working fine, others are having issues... hmmm... dunno what to say at this time...

And I DO pay the $10 for data so... that MAY be something to look into...

FIX!! No APN specified on device (MMS not sending/receiving)

Hey guys,
So I know I'm not alone on this issue, I've come across countless topics and I couldn't find a solid solution ANYWHERE and I tried EVERYTHING. I finally stumbled upon a solution that worked for me and it DIDN'T involve a clean wipe of my ROM.
(oh and a little background, I'm running a Droid 4 on Verizon with stargo's port of CM11 KitKat)
The topic is on the cyanogenmod website (can't post the link because of stupid forum rules), and I found the solution in the comments. Here is the comment by Matt Mower:
"Michael Gernoth, after changing apns-conf.xml, you might need to force a reload of apns-conf.xml. One way to achieve this is:
1) Enable airplane mode
2) Restart phone
3) Settings > Mobile networks should now show "Access point names" as a menu you can enter
4) In Access point names menu, choose "Reset to default" from the drop menu
5) Disable airplane mode"
So I did that, and wallah, I was able to send and receive MMS again and the error is gone!! I've seen soo many other people on here who have the same issue and have tried to reset to default and they mention that it wouldn't save, and I think the reason is it just needed that said manual reload of apns-config.xml.
Please note that I take NO CREDIT FOR THIS FIX, I just happened to find the post that contained the info that I believe many others have missed. Please share this info with anyone else having this issue as it could save them a ton of frustration as well.
Thanks for reading!
I personally tried several solutions including replacing the apns-conf.xml file, manually entering all the APN info and others without any real permanent success.
There is a ridiculously simple fix to cure this issue once and for all.
Make sure your Droid 4 is rooted and open the Play Store. Install Root Tweaker by broodplank. Open the app and check the box next to Cyanogenmod APNS List. Click "Tweak now!" You'll get a message advising it has been applied. Close the app, reboot your device and you should be good to go.
Ahem!

I followed these instructions, and literally one second after turning airplane mode back off I got a "No APN specified on device message." So, at least on the OnePlus One this fix does not work. However, it is apparently possible to reset the APN to default without going into airplane mode or rebooting, although I don't know if that reloads the apns-config.xml file. Anyway, I just changed to a different APN, and so far that seems to have fixed the problem.
By the way, for all you language mavens, "wallah" is a horrible corruption of "voila," which is properly pronounced much the same way but adding the "v" sound at the start, phonetically sort of "vwallah". Cheers!
so helpfull, thank you
Simply, set your APN settings as default from drop menu, shutdown your cell, Remove sim and now insert your sim turn on cell, your issue is fixed..........
Big hug jdinardo22- the issue was fixed by enabling airplan , reboot, disabling it
and my phone is 1+1
it took me much pain and time , till getting to this simple advice that made an end to the creeping situation.
the only benefit of this terrible journey, is that i got read of a lot of nonsense and suspicious apps.
