HTC Desire S Development Thread - dead? - HTC Desire S

I noticed a lot of more action few months, weeks ago... why is no more action in here for days now..? no updates, no fixes, except on the miui thread....
or am i seeing things wrong?

If you have any queries, I may be able to answer them.
Bioan, the OP of the [Fixes & FAQ] MIUI ROM 1.11.25 - Check first post, recently sold his HTC Desire S, he probably won't be back in the forseable future.
In general though, there doesn't really seem to be much going on in regards to the development of the Sense software, and we may not see any changes until the first lot of Ice Cream Sandwich builds begin to dock on the scene harbour, but thats just my thoughts, take it with a pinch of salt.

until ICS is out properly, how much more can you do?

true argument, but how about fixing some of the sense 3.5. ROMs? i have found many bugs in the latest releases... dunno, but i think there is a lot of work to be done

Well, think about it that developers have a life and are busy sometimes, developing free roms dont feed them

There will be an update to Shadow Hawk soon [maybe this weekend] been very busy with RL recently

Good news! Looking forward

Well what else do you want?
We already have the latest sense version, we are making good progress with ics..
Just wait till sense 4.0 comes out, then there will be big development again !

I know WP7 is not open source and never will be. Although, HD2 had it from early days .... its about hardware and unlocked bootloader .... and there is my question, after HTC officially open source desire s, could this change anything?

Desire S might not receive ICS.

Apologies if this has been posted but I have just seen that HTC has not mentioned the desire S in its list of devices to receive ICS. Whether this will be added later I'm not quite sure but for now it'll have to be custom roms I guess
HTC knows how excited our fans are to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, so we're thrilled today to announce the first wave of HTC phones that will receive upgrades: We can confirm the brand new HTC Vivid is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in early 2012 to a variety of devices including the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Sensation XE, as well as the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G through close integration with our carrier partners. We're continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich.
NOTE: THIS DOES NOT EXCLUDE THE POSSIBILITY OF THE DESIRE S RECEIVING ICE CREAM SANDWICH

well DS is not on HTC unlock list too but works...If HTC Sensation receive ICS we will have quality port i'm sure but lets hope that we will get official version too
It says in its 1st wave ,doesn't say that's all that will get ICS
I personally think that we will get it as the DS can handle it, plus thats not every device that is getting it.

That's why I said I'm not sure whether more devices will be added. I probably should've been a little clearer in the title.

Honestly.. I can't see a HTC update to Ice Cream sandwich giving us much more than we already have because they'll overwrite most of the improvements with the Sense bloat. (Don't get me wrong, Sense adds something, but ICS appears to have more improvements on top of that)
We already have CyanogenMod, so it'll just be a case of waiting until the source is out and it's merged with the CM repos and we can install nighties, and off we go!

HTC have to provide an ICS update to the desire S otherwise they will be breaching Google's update policy/ anti fragmentation initiative. These state that all android handset manufactures who release a phone anytime from Q2 2011 onwards MUST guarantee that they they provide updates to the latest version of android for the first 18 months frmo the release date of the phone. Members of the Open Handset Alliance (which HTC is a member) all had to agree on this to google. Desire S was released in April 2011, that means it fits into the Q2 section.
Whaaaaat?
They are crazy!!!!!!!!!!
They HAVE TO update our device.

So the HTC Evo Design 4G is supported with its 1.2Ghz cpu.
I believe the devs can port it from there to nearly every 2010 phone from Htc (except the really low ends; like Wildfire, Salsa and Chacha)
I really don´t see how that 200Mhz should make the difference between an HTC approved Android Experience and a sluggish Custom Rom.
I wonder if a tweaked DHD with ~1.8Ghz will beat any of the new devices on Stock-Ics.
Damn. I want ICs + sennse .
Sad to say, I don't think we will get it
However they did say they will support phone with updates 18 months upon release date.
Theoretically they should release this for the Wildfire/chacha/salsa too...
I how HTC doesn't let us down!

We shouldn't jump to any conclusions, but if this is the case then after only six months they affectively abandoned software updates for the Desire S. That would be a disgrace.
The problem with HTC is, as good as their phones are, they're over-saturating the market with too many handsets (from an update point of view).
Anyway, I guess we won't know until the next "wave" is announced.

Hello people!
I want to share my news with you. There was many threads about release date of Ice Cream Sandwich in last time. Because I am journalist, and also IT-tech in my newspaper - I asked official Polish HTC help desk about release date. They answered me very quickly (2mins).
Here is what I received:

No worries. This is the whole purpose of a general sensation forum; so.that users can discuss any topic about the sensation. People can chose not to read or participate in the discussion.
I myself am happy with the current leak, so while I am hopeful that your information is correct, I won't be upset or disappointed if it is not.

Sense UI is what distinguishes HTC androids from other androids. If one doesnt like the Sense UI why buy an HTC phone? Buy a Samsung, SE, Motorola etc!

Android 4.0 update to be released soon (before 1st of March)

According to @HTC_NL, the sensation range of devices will receive the ICS update soon (before the 1st of March). On the 1st of March an ice white sensation will be released in Holland.
Link here (it's in Dutch of course): http://www.whizpr.nl/persberichten/8268
Article from tweakers.net (source):
HTC provides users of the Dutch Sensation, Sensation Sensation XL and XE soon an update to Android 4.0 ICS. On March 1 also appears that a white Sensation Android 4.0 already installed.
To update existing devices called HTC no period, the manufacturer has only said that "soon" will take place. The update was on the air offered to users. It is still unclear whether the devices with the update to ICS also immediately be provided with Sense 4.0.
About new features in Android 4.0 version of HTC Sense is still little known, HTC has just announced that shortcuts at the bottom can be adjusted by the user. Recently there appeared images of the new version of Sense, showed that the appearance, colors and screen animations differ from both Android 4.0 and the current versions of Sense.
HTC Sensation spent the last year in June from 2.3 with Android. Last autumn there were the Sensation XE and XL on the Sensation. The Sensation runs on a Qualcomm MSM8260 dual-core SOC running at 1.2 GHz. The GPU is an Adreno 220. The phone has a 4.3 "LCD with a resolution of 960x540 pixels. The camera has a maximum resolution of 8 megapixels and shoots video at 1080p with 30fps.
The manufacturer will this spring, next to the white Sensation, presumably releasing new models. These will most likely at the Mobile World Congress telecommunication fair, which takes place later this month in Barcelona, are presented
Nevermind, HTC has clarified that the phone will be coming with 2.3 and will be upgradeable to 4.0 ... lame.

This would be awesome, as they would release kernel sources with this phone which might be compatible with the original Sensation/Sensation XE... which would allow better custom kernels for ICS which is the only thing wrong with [email protected] at the moment! (apart from the *few* minor bugs )

There will be not ICS on 1 March, on XE White. R u blind all? Read!
Update: HTC just wrote us to say that its original press release was incorrect — it'll actually ship with Android 2.3 and be upgradeable to 4.0 down the road, just as its other Sensation versions will be. In other words, don't expect an ICS-equipped Sensation on March 1st... but you can expect a white one with Gingerbread. Furthermore, the white Sensation is already available in select markets, so the PR is simply announcing its upcoming availability in Benelux. Now, the question becomes: how much longer is the wait for the upgrade?

Yes how retarded of people not pre-emptively predicting an updated article.
Take a chill pill.
Im seriously not impressed with the way HTC are masking ICS, AOSP ICS is a beautiful thing, so can sense be, but htc have gone about it all wrong with sense 3.6 and 4, I think im steering away from HTC slowly but surely, and can almost guarantee that I will be going AOSP ICS when it is stable!

I like the ROM's that are already out there, and as posted above as soon as AOSP is stable I'll be going to that.
On the other hand I wonder what's taking HTC so long, we have devs that do this for fun and they're releasing great ROMs and here you got a major company that you would think have lots of professional devs that do this for a living and they take forever.

A chef here has to make a rom which is pre made and stable and tweaks it. If it works for 99% of the users it's good. Htc has to release a rom which work for 100% of the users.

You forget that it isn not just a phone software that they need to update and polish, they need to sort out all cloud services that their ecosystem is all about (eg facebook for HTC, watch, hub, likes etc).
I would rather wait a few weeks to get a finished product, than have unpolished system that has memory leaks or whatever...
You forget that average user doesn't want to mess with rooting and flashing and they even don't know about that alternative (and/or care) so they cannot and will not flash new "xda" software when official rom "breaks"...
Very true, didn't think about that.

Update on Android Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades
by HTC on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 5:04pm ·
HTC has been working hard to get its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades ready, and we’re excited to announce that our first round of ICS upgrades will roll out by the end of March for the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XE, followed soon there after by the HTC Sensation XL.
In addition, we can confirm Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will be coming later this year to the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. Stay tuned for more updates on Ice Cream Sandwich releases in the coming weeks.

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so happy right now. Saw the post on twitter and went crazy. After faulty eMMC's, locked bootloaders and no updates, i was thinking of going samsung next time. Not gonna happen.
HTC, learning from their mistakes.
EDIT: Just read that the Sensation will get it by the end of march, and the XL soon after. Then, probably the Evo 3D will follow. Our device should be the first among single core family (DHD and IS, not Sensation XL) to get the update, like it got the 2.3.5 Sense 3 update. I believe it would be close to late April/early, May. So it's gonna be quite a long wait. But better late than never

Seems a long way off, but like you say, better late than never
I'm sure there will be a leaked ROM for the us, DHD, IS, XL, and it could be easily ported
THing is, it won't ship with Sense 4.0, but instead 3.6
Bit sad....
It's kind of like the original Desire upgrade. It got the Gingerbread update, but HTC chose not to update the Sense version to 2.1.. THey kept the old version (Maybe because of internal memory issues?)
THat was kind of a rubbish update IMO.
Hopefully our update turns out to be good!
We really don't need to care of Sense 3.6 or 4.0. Even the update isn't important. What's important is the kernel 3.0 that will accompany it, and it's source. After that, a Sense 4 port should be easy. It'll be just like what we have now - official Sense 3 and ported Sense 3.5, both on Android 2.3.5
Maybe we get lucky and get Sense 4 right away, who knows. All i know is, HTC won my loyalty with this.

Yeah
Thats the main reason I'm happy too
I have no intentions of using the official update itself. I'm just interested in getting the base for this ROM & the kernel source. From there devs can tweak the base (Lowveld ) And the ROM will be much better
Hopefully HTC still release a WVGA device that will come with Sense 4.0 (although it seems unlikely)
Because the ROM will need resizing the images etc, which is not a easy and perfect job.
Virtuous Unity was a great job by the team, they resized the Sensations qHD Sense to work on our device. But unfortunately it still had flaws, inconsistent size issues, & wasn't as fast as the WVGA version we have now...
Anyway, enough of my rambling, I'm really happy with HTC's decision! They are even supporting the DHD which is a 2 year old phone.
Seriously, that device is lucky! It went from 2.2 + Sense 2.0 > 2.3.3 + Sense 2.1 > 2.3.5 + Sense 3.0 > 4.0.X + Sense 3.6/4.0
2 major OS updates and 3 major Sense updates! Thats as good as Apple with their iPhone 3GS updates!
One thing i did notice, was they haven't announced any plans to upgrade the HTC Flyer to ICS...
I was considering buying one if it did get the update officially

Crazy news. Keeping my desire s a tad longer then...
I also think this is great news, as I am not much for rooting and doing stuff to my phone. And better late than never.
BUT I think the main problem is that all the big phone producers have their own UIs on top of Android, meaning that we never get the updates OR really really late.
If they just would let google control updates, then all users would have ICS already on their phone regardless of brand and phone (overseeing old phones that cannot handle the new software).
I know that the big companies need to differentiate themselves from each other.. but still, just what I would prefer.
Waiting for HTC Sense on ICS
I dont know about you guys but I am pretty happy with HTC Sense and would love to have an ICS rom with Sense. Will wait for the update from HTC to try out ICS on my Desire S.
I just got a good reason to keep my desire s for another 6 months.
That guy who came out earlier and say he believes all the phones running gingerbread should be able to run ICS was right after all.

Absolutely not relevant
Sent by my fingers to your head.
Actually, this was relevant, but a month ago. Now, everything you will see about the update in the General section will be re-posts or "information leaks on ETAs" from highly unreliable sources. The update is close, it'll be here in April and as soon as it comes, there will be a post with a download link in the DEV section

There are no leaks - so I fear that the update is far away.
in former times the ROMs always "leaked" (aka ROM for beta testers) 1 month before the official releases...

how awesome is the development for the sensation right now?! :D

it seems every single day at the moment there is a new rom in the dev section, having a sensation seems to be finally paying off.
Theres nothing really new, just sense 3.x with practically nothing extra, IMHO. Only seen 1 AOSP ROM (yikes)
Glad you're more optimistic then me lol

Apart from the new MIUI rom...everything has been the same.
Im only waiting for the sources from htc then sense will be so great
no need for aosp
It's as Awesome as it has always been! Hang out in the Development section with our talented chefs for a while..you'll get the real picture!!
I think once source is out its going to get way better. I can't wait for official cm9 and virtuous Quattro.

Well it's been amazing if not great. Hey at least our devs keep their ROMs updated, right?

I agree with the OP...
There's more than just Sense 3.x. There's plenty of Sense 4 ROMs now too which are very nice indeed
Ok I am I missing something or has every post in this thread missed something? Development is not just making custom ROMs. Don't get me wrong custom ROMs are great but with Qualcomm releasing the driver binaries for the Adreno 2xx Snapdragon processors., and the work being done on making the Sensation unbrickable. The Sensation is on the path to be a very valuable development device which means it is going to be open to loads of development. I would even dare say it has a capability to reach some of the level of development that the HD2 has. The driver binaries is enough on it's own as it opens up the possibility of custom bootloaders and booting of different OS's on the Sensation, I mean we do have S-off, and a official unlock from HTC Dev. Either one of these can be compared to HSPL for the HD2, without it non of the thing achieved on the HD2 would have every happened. Then you have the unbrickable work being done, this will make developers really want it because they know they have somewhat of a earth net and can revive the Sensation if they make a mistake and have to revive it. Even the legendary HD2 has never reached this status......

HD2 is capable of WM, WP, Android, Ubuntu....far more than just Android on the Sensation. But I can see your point.

Yeah this is why I said some of the level of development. The HD2 can boot almost OS thrown at it. But I do see a real possibility of custom booloaders for the Sensation. And when you have a custom bootloader the next step is booting different OS's.
Go take a look at the G2x dev forum. Wow. Its empty.
Do we have a sense rom with Face Unlock?

All of the ics roms have that.
Guys, I'm gonna give you a little teaser... There are some thoughts of getting Ubuntu on that baby...

I like that idea ))))

I heard Microsoft is adding support for dualcore in wp7. Maybe htc will release a WP with similar specs as the sensation and we may get a WP7 port ? I don't think it's likely anymore though :/

Even if they do I can't see a port happening, like the Nexus One and Desire have the same chip as the Mozart, HD7 and a few others IIRC but those two haven't had ports AFAIK.
we need a license to run wp7 which we dont have

You mean natively (as in booting straight to Ubuntu) or within Android? I use BackTrack 5 in Android, it was a fun ride but I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 anyway so meh. If its native though, that would be awesome.
Also to the guy that I didn't feel like quoting who mentioned that multiple OSes on the Sensation in his mild rant; we would barely even have much of a chance to do such a thing. The closest we could do is Boot 2 Gecko, since the drivers are pretty much cross compatible. The Galaxy S II has it.
