[Q] upgrading - General Questions and Answers

ive been rooting my phones for the past couple of months now and recently been trying quite a bit of different roms and kernals, but i have a question if anyone does not mind answering for me. When doin a upgrade on on a certain rom would you recommend to always wipe: data, cache and dalvik cahce....thank you in advance for the help

It is recommended to do a full wipe, dalvik cache if you going from one type of Rom to another. Ex. from CM to Muiu, if you just trying to tests different version of same rom, full wipe is not necessary, but still recommended.

thanx for the help really appreciated....

ROM Manager

Hey I was just browsing the market and decided to invest in Rom manager (used it religiously on my old Droid 1). Lo and behold we don't even have a cwm listed!
What needs to be done to have some of these roms I see on this board listed in that App?
Thanks and sorry for the noob question. (We need a Q and A board.)

You really should've looked a little as it's mentioned a billion times, BUT...
Just install CWM for the Galaxy S i9000, works perfect.

I will be eventually putting mine up there as well. I'm trying to do a complete overhaul for the next version of Refuse.
Yeah after a little newbie hiccups I am rocking a custom rom.

Would it be hard to add infuse to the cwm list in rom manager? So that way only infuse Rome would show up for people?

would have to work with Koush on that one. Don't see why not, we just need to get them separated... (Wouldn't be a bad idea seeing that really noobtastic people may pseudobrick their devices and need us to walk them through Odin restoral....)
I'm always one for lack of headaches. Keeps the real devs from having to field noob questions and pseudo-devs like myself with more free time to try and step up to full dev status....

I asked Koush today if he could add it...but he seemed busy with something. After looking at his twitter, I think he's still working on the Optimus series.

You would want to check all 3 if it is your first flash, that way if something goes wrong you have a backup to restore, and the other two need to check because they are cache for your original rom, not the new one.
It's worth doing the backup of your stock setup.
Wiping the data isn't necessary unless you are a stickler about starting "fresh".
Dalvik cache wipe never hurts.

If you are coming from stock, you need to wipe all. It can cause issues, i have seen it. You get lots of force close, stuff that is removed from stock would still be there, which could also cause problems. Its better to do a full wipe when going from stock to a custom rom, and when switching custom roms.
I think I made a mistake, it reboot into recovery and I guess I was to wipe data and cache then reboot into cyanogen rom, but I did not wipe data and cache, Now it froze on me. What can I do, Did I just brick my phone?

I'm getting conflicting answers.

I started using the cm7 nightly's today & i'm getting different answers on which to wipe between nightly's. Cache AND Dalvick or just one of them? Some ppl are saying u only have to wipe cache, i've seen just Dalvick & i've seen both. I'd asssume both but don't want to go thru an extra step if it's unnecessary. Thanks alot guys

It really depends on what changed in the nightly. It never hurts to wipe both, but it is usually the case that the system is smart enough to just rebuild odexes for the things that have changed therefore, I'd just go with the cache. I rarely wipe anything between CM7 flashes even many builds apart, but I live on the edge.

I've never used ROM manager so I can't say, but that sounds like the way to go.
I've had bad luck w/ Rom Mgr soft-bricking my phone. I prefer CWM.
Ok, thanks alot guys! I just wanted to make sure & yea, rom manager just doesn't feel as comfortable to me as doing it manually where can see what's going on & abort & restore if i can see something not going right. Mainly i just wanted to know if it was ok to download the rom from rom manager & then do it manually from there. Thanks again fellas :')

About changin kernel

What is the step if i gonna changin my kernel??
can i going back to my old kernel,if i dont like the new one??
if i update new kernel, will all my apps/data will lost??
Wipe cache and dalvic cache then flash kernel
Yes
No.
I suggest you do alot of reading about the ins/outs of flashing roms and kernels before you attempt anything

Get a kernel for the nexus s such as netarchy, trinity or matrix. Take a back up of your existing ROM, flash the new kernel from recovery and reboot. This will not delete all your apps. I'd you don't like it just restore the backup you took.

Go in recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache, and just flash new kernel. You will not lose anything. And you can flash another one if you don't like that one. I recommend not to use ROM manager to flash anything. Flash kernels and ROMs from Recovery, and Radios via fastboot...
Not sure about restoring kernels from backup...never done that. If you know which one is in your ROM you can download it and manually flash it back, if you don't like the new one ...
I would recommend one of Trinity's kernels TUV10 or TUV11 ...

You're just minimizing potential damage, and in fastboot there's less possibility for something to go wrong. Radios are more fragile. I was using that method with my HTC Desire. Don't know, maybe things are different with nexus, but i'm still using that method .
Here's one quotation from oxygen forum:
forum.oxygen.im said:
When you flash a radio over a recovery, the recovery extracts the downloaded radio.zip into /cache partition. So the radio.img is stored there temporary. For this operation the /cache partition needs as many as 25 mb. If it hasn't, they might occur big problems.
Furthermore, it's better to do it, because there isn't any software (e.g. recovery) which could go wrong.

is there any disadvantages if using ROM manager when flash ROMs??
if I gonna flash ROM using recovery mode?do i need to wipe cache and wipe dalvik??
I just flash Trinity kernel TUV..just a little bit disspointing because there is no smartass in available gavernors...
i chosed conservative to save my battery..

Smartass sucks on the nexus s from my experience. If you flash roms in recovery you wipe data, cache and dalvic cache if flashing a different rom. If its the same rom, just wipe cache and dalvic cache.

I don't have great experience with ROM manager, but maybe that was just me . I just prefer manual CWM recovery use, and fastboot/adb when needed .
If you're installing new ROM, yes, you should wipe all caches and wipe data/factory reset.
You don't need to change anything with Trinity TUV kernels, they are great with performance and power saving ...
Don't use SetCPU or similar app, just try it as it is...

what do choose for you governor??
i tried juice defender on my nexus s and it caused a few problems.
My buddy with a thunderbolt likes it.
If your looking for battery stamina look at two things. (in my experience)
Apps left running. Slacker was a problem if not closed correctly. To many running ETC.
second and even more important
SIGNAL STRENGTH
At work my signal sucks and my battery will drain to almost nothing just sitting on my desk if not charging. When i bypass data and connect to my jobs wifi and turn off wifi sleep(just learned about wifi sleep) then my battery life is beyond amazing. I have att and dont know who you have but if its ATT your prob screwed cuase their service SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.
try turning off your data in a bad service area you might be in for extended times and see if that helps.
also in my opinion the best rom for battery is just stock. you can use root apps to get almost all the same effects as most roms but stock has the best stability and life. Next would prob be SuperOSR to me. Another good tip i have started to do is whenever i change the rom it seems i have to drain out the batt fully then wipe batt stats and charge again. could be in my head but it helps alot.
Juice defended is worthless. Take the time to read the rom, kernel, and root guide in the development section...... you can learn alot from reading.

I get when people say to read the tuts to people but even then its good to ask a few questions. Sometimes its difficult to jump into reading a tutorial and the terminology used and asking a few questions can really give you a jump start.
I used the tutorial and bricked my phone for 2 days before i figured out what i did wrong. If i asked a few questions first i could have prob avoided it. if people dont ask questions what the point of a Q&A forum?

Dirty vs Clean

I know this is simple stuff, and I probably already know the answer, but there's no specific thread on it that I could find by searching.
What's the difference between a clean flash and a dirty flash? Just wiping the data, dalvik and cache?
I'm new to flashing on the S3. Thanks
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yeah a clean flash just means you wipe data in addition to wiping cache and dalvik. While you only wipe cache and dalvik in dirty flashes. You're usually guaranteed not to have issues with clean flashes but you lose your app data.

I always clean= wipe data
That's what I thought, but just wanted to make sure it wasn't some extra step I didn't know about. Many thanks

So I've noticed a lot of posts in the development thread that are general questions instead of relating to the Development of the two ROM's. So please, ask in this thread your questions related to BeanStalk and DirtyUnicorns. Factory reset/data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. Go into mounts and storage and format data, cache, and system. Every now and again I'll format sdcard 0, but not every time. If you do this, make sure the rom is saved on external card, because if you do format sdcard 0 and the rom is saved there, you won't have a rom to flash. Flash ROM and gapps, you're good! I also suggest going to the blaze Bible and getting Blackhole. It's a beast when wiping for a clean install!
