I got a new skyrocket off of craigslist (no contract) and I put my sim card from my inspire 4g in the phone. It does not work. On the sim it says 3g, if that means anything in terms of a sim.
Why does it not work in my ATT Skyrocket phone?
You need a 4g/LTE sim card... Call AT&T and make sure your plan is updated.. They have to do something on their end for your AT&T SR to receive LTE.
I dont want to update my plan. Your not very helpful.
you need a lte sim card and the plan on your account to get lte data and speeds. there's no way around it.

Wrong.
Just call AT&T, and ask for LTE unlimited (if you have unlimited data right now), and they'll provision your account correctly.
Register the phones imei with ATT. Call 611 and update it.
Google is your friend.

I am pretty sure that you can get around having a new plan. Should I just get a new sim card and then I will be good?

No... it's an AT&T smartphone, give it a few hours, and they'll automatically slap on a tiered plan if your trying to do the medianet thing.
I have a 3g smartphone plan.
i work for AT&T you totally need a new SIM card (9th and 10th digits needs to be 25) and the LTE data plan, if you have unlimited you can keep it.
but you WILL need to change these for it to work properly.

Is it unlimited? If they switch you to a 4G LTE plan, it'll be completely fine, you can still swap to the Inspire and get data, just it will work with LTE.

Really? Nice attitude after you ask for help... told you strait up what you need. If you can get AT&T LTE without lte sim, pls let all of us know.
Sorry if I upset you. I am just like everyone else. I want to avoid throttle.
Um, you can and will be throttled on you're current phone and plan if you use to much data, its not just for LTE phones its for all unlimited users

Thank you for your great response.
Do I need an old phone to get a new sim card thereby preventing them knowing about my skyrocket when I activate the new sim?
Keep us posted. User experience/posts reflect the new sim alone results in continued connectivity inconsistency on lte phones. Eventually you may have to have them change your plan to an LTE plan. This change does not affect you plan pricing btw...think of it as a plan, with little check marks below it that enable features and they need to enable lte for consistent connectivity

I went to att to get a new sim card, they activated it and the code on the side of the sim ends in #29 not #25 as a previous poster mentioned as being a lte sim card. They said it was a lte card but I am not sure.
I put the sim in the skyrocket and I get no lte.
Did they lie and say the card was lte but it really wasn't. What do I do?

The other day I was at Frys to look at the SR. They had the black one for $139.99. I looked at the tag and it said that they charge an extra $7 for the sim card.
I've been with att for almost forever and I don't think I've ever been charged for the sim card. Is this something new or is this something that Frys is doing?
Lets say I bought the phone and didn't buy the sim card from them, can I still use my old "3g" card and get the LTE speed if I am in a LTE area?
U have to call at&t if u u do that because you will have no data. They have to know you bought an lte phone or your data will not work at all. Alsoi went to at&t the gave me an lte sim card for free. But i dont think your 3g sim will work at all. Needs to be a 4g sim

Not fully true, you have to get a new sim, they are called "4g" sims. or just you can just say plan sim card. also if you go to an att corp store you can get one for free!
Never go to a authorized retailer tho!!1 they will eff you stuff up!! ha
But you do need to get a new one to get faster internet speeds!
also you don't have to tell AT&t just use the phone for a day then they will send you a text saying, we see you're using a smart phone. to better server you we'll add the internet 2gb plan."
but if you want to start using the internet right away just call
Correct me if important wrong, but i think it matters what sim you have. I was on my old sim card and couldn't get LTE speed. Went to rogers bought an LTE sim...now on LTE speed.

Oi, people these days...
Call AT&T and have them provision your line correctly, they have to add the LTE data plan for the radio to get LTE access.
It really doesn't matter what SIM you use, as long as they provision it correctly, but it is good to get a new SIM when you get a new phone... so yeah.
Only time you need a new SIM is on Verizon, for their LTE. ^^
You do need a new sim. If you were to plug in an older SIM, you would be able to text and make calls but you would have no data. If you go to an ATT store, they will replace your SIM with the LTE one for no charge, regardless of where you bought the phone. If you buy the phone from ATT they will do it when you get the phone. I have sold 3 skyrockets and none of them had worked with the older sims including my own. I do not know about other carriers and can only speak about ATT phones. I do not know about whether frys has to pay att per activation or for the sim cards, so that may be why they have to charge 7 dollars. If you do not want to pay the 7 dollar frys fee, then get the phone, head to the ATT store, then replace the SIM for free.
Even if ATT provisions the line correctly, the phone will not pick up the non lte sim card. I worked with the ATT sales tech on the day the skyrocket came out. He provisioned the line, plugged in my old sim, and it wouldnt pick up LTE. Then he realized they need to use the brand new stack of SIM cards, set up the new sim, plugged it in and I had blazing fast LTE.

There's no such thing as an "LTE SIM Card". Plain and simple.
Normal size SIM cards are SKU 70357. Micro SIM cards are SKU 70290.
That's it folks.
The data plan is what has to be changed. For example, I took the SIM out of my Inspire and put it in my Skyrocket demo and got no data until I manually changed the IMEI to the Skyrocket.
Same SIM card, but a new data plan.
Oh, SIM cards are actually $25 and $35 for micro SIMs. Agents and ARs can charge if they want. COR stores shouldn't charge you, however.

Since we're on the topic of SIM cards and the data plans they use, I've got a couple questions I'm hoping you guys can answer:
I have an iPhone 4s which has my grandfathered unlimited plan. When I throw my 4s SIM into my skyrocket, I get 3g speeds (have to play with APN settings). Now, I don't have LTE in my area yet but with all this news of LTE springing up, I'm thinking it's coming soon. Here's what I want to do. I want to be able to switch from 4s to skyrocket freely without having to contact ATT everytime.
My questions:
1) Should I move my skyrocket to my main line to get a new sim to get LTE then cut it so it fits my 4s too?
2) Will the SIM work correctly in my 4s after changing to the LTE data plan?
3) Can I call att and have them switch my plan to LTE using the current microsim?
4) Will the 4s SIM and all the functionality work after making the change?
I'm hoping someone went through this already so I can get good advice. I may just have to be the guinea pig if not.
I don't know about you guys, but I am pretty sure my iphone 4s's micro sim isn't an lte sim card, and it works perfectly fine as long as it's positioned correctly.
For data, all you have to do is configure the media net apn
Edit: missed the guy's post above me, whoops!
I just got a Skyrocket today and I swapped my Infuse simple into it and it has been working perfectly. I am not in an LTE enabled area but the next time in am down in Manhattan I will test the speed.
Infused with Android DNA
Ok so i bought the black Skyrocket of the street, I reset it and everything works fine except no data no matter what i do so finally i made a new apn with cm7 defaults and bam i see 4g so i been happy untill today when i walked in my local AT&T to check the tablets i noticed a skyrocket with 4g lte on the the data sign i didnt ask at&t personnel in fear of loosing my old data plan that thankfully has not yet raised any red flags. I checked the apn and noticed that it was the same as mine except mine doesn't show Lte no matter what i do is mine defective?how can i get 4g lte? is it imei based or need a special sim? also both are on 2.3.6
You have to subscribe to an LTE plan. So you're going to have to talk to your carrier, or see if you can get them to give you a deal on another plan.

Yes it is, but it doesn't cost extra. You shouldn't see any extra charges on your account. It's just a different data plan that allows LTE access.

Just bring the Skyrocket into your AT&T store and they'll activate your phone with a new SIM while adding the LTE data plan and visual voicemail if you don't already have it.

No need, SIM cards are free. Just do what I stated above.
okay wish me luck
The other thing is that was not mentioned in the responses .. If you have the grandfathered Unlimited Data plan (Gold Card) .. you can still keep that when subscribing to a new LTE Data Plan.
I originally had the Unlimited from an old iPhone 3GS .. kept it through ALL my transitions to different phones.
Just call AT&T .. they will take care of it for you.
You must also have a lte sim
you need a new lte sim.
I bought skyrocket in june 2012 2 year contract, but i have unlocked no contract i777 phone for use with at&t can i put my sim card from my skyrocket and data, call, text plan on the i777 for free? Or do i have to pay or "hidden fees crap.
I don't see why not. Its not like you're moving from an old blackberry to an android. This would then complicate things because blackberry plans are specialized in how they use blackberry servers to retrieve email by text (thus the instantaneous notification without the battery drain). But I digress.
Simple answer yes, with no "hidden fees" lol
I agree. I don't thnk AT&T cares what specific device you have. Just regular phone, smartphone or blackberry. I've swapped my SIM card between devices before and it was fine. Hopefully you'll have the same experience.
ok so i can swap sim+ plans to i777/ my mom has iphone 3gs under contract still october 2011, if i put my plans in i777 can my mom put her sim card and plans into my skyrocket with no hidden fees/pay to use crap? Also, BONUS QUESTION which one is better for gaming i777 or ipod touch 5g?

You mentioned an unlocked phone, but from which carrier? It is a good rule of thumb that, if it's not an AT&T phone, it might not be capable of receiving all of the AT&T frequencies. (LTE, 4g, 3g ....).
A current sim card will allow a phone acess to AT&T's network. Sims are swappable, the phone you are using will be bound to the bands (frequencies) the internal radio is programmed to use. I suggest, a person wanting to use an unlocked phone, in any carriers network to first research (Google) the phone specs, and your network, to see if they are compatible. Their are several carriers that share the same bandwidth, but some only share some bands. Like AT&T shares some bands with T-Mobile but not all (LTE).
I hope this helps anybody with the decision on which phone it's capable of working on any given network.

I have Straight Talk with a T Mobile SIM in my Nexus 5 and I am getting awesome LTE coverage, although my friend has the exact same setup and is only getting H data and not LTE. Thanks for this. I tried to contact useless Straight Talk support regarding this question. They didn't seem to understand it, sent me the at&t APN settings, when I called them on it, they sent me the non-smartphone APN settings. They said that yes, t-mobile does support LTE, not just H+ (but I didn't actually trust them to understand the question), however said nothing about needing a new sim card. I have the light pink sim right now.
However I'm still not entirely convinced. Here's a picture on ebay of what I assume is the new hot pink sim:
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Straight-Talk-Micro-SIM-Card-T-Mobile-Network-/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/z/b7gAAOxy3zNSlQHw/$_57.JPG
You can see clearly on the card that it admits "4g" is HSPA+, not LTE. I'm also suspicious because T-Mobile has a different APN setting for LTE, while Straight Talk does not. Has anyone checked the "Mobile Network Type" in settings to verify that you really truly are getting LTE? Could the hot pink be because it's in micro sim size? The at&t cards have a similar color scheme (light blue for full sized sim, dark blue for micro), and I think offering the Micro Sim size for t-mobile is new, but the internals of the sim may not be.
Can someone post a speedtest speeds result of their "LTE" speeds? My H+ speeds are very fast, so I don't know if there'll be much difference..

Oh and did you get the AT&T or TMobile sim? I think straight talk still has the option for either.

It does but straight talk told me the AT&T and T-Mobile sims won't work for this phone. They sent me a CDMA specific sim card, and cmda phones will indeed work on straight talk, not every single one but most
And no I didn't have to do anything with the phone, didn't have to edit apn settings or anything. I'm still running off the Verizon network

Wait, Straight Talk has Verizon SIM's now??? Meaning Verizon is one of their MVNO's? I always thought it was just TMobile and AT&T and Tracfone leased off Sprint for CDMA based phones.

Tracphone owns straight talk for one. It's a straight talk sim... But they piggy back off all 4 networks. VZW, ATT, TMobile and sprint

Are you referring to me?
I was. However I hooked my Old S3 up for a family member. I can confirm that the VZW S3 will get 4G LTE on the Verizon network with the CDMA Sim that comes with the starter pack. Ran a speed test at full signal strength and had an initial burst for ~9-10 mbs and stabilized at ~5mb both up and down. This is way more than the user of the phone will need but also not a bad number.
For comparison sake my personal phone on a VZW unlimited plan still gets 40+ mbs during speed tests in the same location. Appears that ST is speed limited but at 5mbs still more than 99.9% of users will ever need/notice at one time.

Yea I'm not worried about speed as I'm 99% of the time on wifi so I could care less now. The initial starter pack didn't come with the CDMA sim. Card which is a pain but now it does

Quick question for those that have done this already - I have just ordered the Galaxy S3 I535 from walmart because i'm cheap and it was on special - Would it be wise to at least activate the phone on Verizon and entering the details on ST's site to make sure it will work before getting the sim or just ordering it (they are on special right now for .99c) I'm glad they are doing the CDMA sims because i had read that folks were only getting edge for data using the AT&T sims and was prepared to limit myself to being on the Verizon prepaid plan and just sucking it up...

If its the prepaid version it may not work, the prepaid version doesn't utilize a sim card where as the contract version does

Probably a good idea. I'm truly unsure if it will work or not. I have the S3 contract version and it works great on straight talk. Another user informed me the prepaid version doesn't utilize a sim which in most cases at least for VZW means no 4G
