The H is for HSPA+ also. Depends on which rom you are using as to weather it shows H or 4G.

Actually I think there is something weird with how some towers identify themselves too: I only have seen H in NYC, but saw 4G in Atlanta. Speedtests showed roughly the same speeds in both cities, and I'm pretty sure 4G service is available in both.

In the latter releases of CM7, there is a differentiation in icon based on "Mobile Network Type".
Mobile Network Type HSPA = Icon H
Mobile Network Type HSPA+ = Icon 4G
A lot of the places I travel to show up as H, but I did notice the 4G icon while transiting at Atlanta's airport.

The G2X isn't banded for 3g. Just 4 and 2.

I get about the same here in Metro Detroit. My taskbar even says 4G. I got the same speeds on my HD2 running Android. 4G my ass!?!

Edit: Just ran a few more speed test from my desk. Very inconsistant data speeds
4 Bars 4G Icon
Test1: U:6196kbps D:2471kbps
Test2: U:5137kbps D:2153kbps
Test3: U:3893kbps D:2251kbps
Test4: U:3398kbps D:2113kbps
Test5: U:3095kbps D:2115kbps
I've always wondered about speedtest...
How can I tell if my download/upload speed is good? What numbers should look out for?

Yes it has 3G on 1700 and 2100Mhz. You cannot tell if you are on 3G or 4G because what T-Mobile calls 4G is really 3.5G (HSDPA+). It is not true 4G. The phone just says 4G whether you are connected to 3G or 4G. When it says 4G you are really only using 3G as T-Mobile is deceiving you and playing a shell game. Having said that, the phone's max speed is 21Mbps per second which is pretty darn fast, but not real 4G.
So does the latest nightly actually tell u ure getting 3g or 4g

H icon on data connection

Wanted to ask for some info, after I flashed my phone with arhd 4.1.3 everytime I connect to tmobiles data network it only shows "H" icon instead of the "4g". Does this mean Im not connected to the 4g anymore?

Not at all.
H means HSPA+ which is tmobiles 4G mike is based out of the other half of the world which doesn't run 4G so that's why his rom have the. H no different than 4G

My inspire wont receive 3G?

My inspire is for AT&T which I have unlocked for t - mobile but I only get edge internet...
I saw there was a number to(call)/ dial to change settings but when I set it to 3g my signal would just stop and say no service. I also heard wasn't possible to have 3 but I doubt that, is it true?

That depends on the area where you are....in the case you are using a different carrier from ATT you wont get 3g...just edge.
So "lay012" gets 3g because he has AT&T?
There's no way then?

For 3G
Tmobile uses 1700/2100 MHz
HTC Inspire uses 850/1900 MHz
So to answer you, there is NO way. Have to get a phone that matches the network.
The stuff they teach you in school 'skimming and scanning' or whatever your teachers called it shouldn't be used in life after school. I didn't see the unlocked for T-Mobile part .-.
I'm on AT&T.

No the bands are hardware dependent. This has been talked about it hundreds of times. A search would have shown this.
