I finally Rooted my Sidekick and have Titanium Backup Free installed. I want to remove the bloatware from the Phone Storage. Which titles would you recommend removing and which to leave alone??
Any suggestions
I removed a lot of apps. I removed device carbon, zipwhip, group text, cloud text, tmobile contacts backup, twitter, myspace, the stock browser, gmail, wifi calling, telenav, tmobile app pack, tmobile mall, maybe some others i cant remember. i replaced the stock browser with dolphin mini which i use for only mobile browsing. i also have opera mobile which i use for desktop browsing. i use google maps for navigation. i downloaded gmail from the market. seems the preloaded version may be faulty but the market version works fine. i used an app from the market called apps2rom to convert gmail, dolphin, opera, and a few other user apps to system apps. seems to work good so far.

out of curiosity, how exactly did u remove those apps? adb remove?
no. i use an app called total commander. you wont find it in the market yet, so just google total commander for android or visit ghisler.com. when you open total commander in landscape mode, you should see a button with a green plus sign. if you dont see that, switch to portrait mode and hit the botton with the two green arrows. then you should see the green plus sign. when you hit the green plus sign, a window will pop up that says add/edit button. at the top of the window it will say change directory. click that and change it to internal command. then click where it says command and select 119 remount. this will only work with root access. click ok/apply. you will now have a button with an r on it. go into any partition and click the r button and it will remount as r/w. when mounted as r/w, the button will also display r/w. click the button again and it will remount as r/o. go into system/app and remount as r/w and you can delete any system app. when im done i usually remount as read only again just to be safe. you probably already know this, but you have to allow total commander su permissions for this to work. but thats how i do it.
You can also use root browser by jrummy 16 he allows u to have the full verison for free

there are several good ways to remove system apps. any file browser with root functions will do the job. i like total commander because it has two windows, you can copy from one window and paste in the other, i like the interface, and i like the way it displays folders. it is also free, and it is the "full version". its an app thats currently in development. right now release candidate 4 is the current version. i dont know when the official version comes out, but i know it will be in the market. also dont know if it will be paid or free, but i think free. right now its free, if it becomes paid, i will have to find another root browser that i like. but i hope it stays free. i doubt i will like any other browser as much as i like total commander.
i also have converted several user apps to system using an app called apps2rom. its available in the market for free if anyone is interested. its very straightforward. select the apps you want to convert, click move, allow the device to reboot, and voila! its done.
Titanium Backup Free also allows for free app block/removal (and this is for a *rooted* Sidekick 4G). (and it is what I have installed )
Just get a custom rom like glorious overdose..it will save you the trouble of going through each unnecessary app and deleting it..a good rom like that is already fast and lightweight..

some people want to stay on the stock firmware, myself being one of them. removing bloatware really isnt that troublesome. if you spend a little time figuring out how to do it, it really takes no time at all. removing bloatware takes most of the bugs out of the stock firmware anyway (now is the part when people start screaming about touchwiz being the main problem, but it works fine for me). not everyone needs a custom rom though.
I finally tried to block an app but found out that feature is only in the PAID (aka DONATION) version of Titanium Backup. Cheapskate that I am, I went to your "Total Commander for Android" (1.0 rc4) and downloaded it. Any suggestions on how to use it?

these are all the instructions you need to delete apps i cant explain it any better
I guess I am not sure where to LOOK for the system files. not sure which folders have the files in them (no clue about how Android sets up their stuff in the root directory) but I saw the R & the icons mentioned, etc.
open total commander. click file system root. scroll down, click system. then click app. then remount, delete the apps you want, then remount back to read only. if you are not sure what an app is or does, google it. thats how i figured certain things out. i dont remember what any of them are, i only looked them up and deleted them. i also suggest if you have cwm recovery that you boot into it after deleting system apps and run fix permissions. to do that, boot into cwm, scroll down and select advanced, then select fix permissions. you dont have to do it after you delete every system app, just delete a bunch and then do it. android stores permissions for every app, and i theorize that deleting system apps causes permissions errors similar to registry errors in windows. fix permissions takes care of that.
re-reading stuff now. Where to I move them to? I am thinking of making a new folder in my SD card and moving stuff there. I can then upload the stuff to my SugarSync account for permanent storage.
I removed the default Contacts APP. the "CONTACTS" word disappeared for the home screen. I used Go Contacts Pro. if I move that app into the system folder, will the "CONTACTS" Shortcut come back?
Also getting constant "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly" Force Close error again and again. How do I fix this?
also, where do I find "cwm recovery"??
i looked here and don't see anything:
https://market.android.com/search?q=cwm+recovery&c=apps
AND
https://market.android.com/developer?pub=ClockworkMod&start=0&num=12
I tried this 1:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.stericson.permissionfix
But it didn't seem to do anything. Still getting the "acore" Force Close error
after a bit more research on the error, it looks like Facebook & Contacts are the main culprits. i will attempt re installing them back into the system app folder.
I see this a lot when I'm talking to folks about Google Drive, and Google hasn't been very forthcoming about it's plans to allow exporting in the phone app. I don't know if they just forgot to implement such a feature (which would be an egregious error on their part), or if they're just worried about copyright infringement and such. Google Drive has the potential to be much cheaper, easier to use, more integrated, and more flexible than any of the competition.
METHOD 1
The easiest, safest, and most reliable way: Use Cloud2SD. It can be found at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hexxus.cloudtosd . This app used to be known as "Google Drive Download", however it was removed by Google for copyright reasons. Fair enough.
Once you've installed the app, go into Google Drive, long-press the file you want to save, click "Send", then hit "Download". That's it. Files are saved to your sdcard/Downloads directory. Pictures and such automatically appear in your gallery.
METHOD 2
If you're unwilling to spend 99 cents, then you can ALSO get access to your files the following way:
1.) Go into your Google Drive app, go into the Settings menu, and uncheck "enable encryption"
^ If you do not uncheck this, you will be able to navigate to the files in step 3 but you will be unable to view them unfortunately
2.) Click the small detail button (it looks like a triangle inside of a circle) on the right hand side of the file you want to "save". Check the mark that says "available offline"
^ If you do not do this, then the files will not appear in the folders @ step 3.
3.) Navigate to /mnt/sdcard/Android/Data/com.google.android.apps.docs/files/pinned_docs_Files_do_not_edit/"random numbers here"/etc
^ There will usually be multiple folders with random gibberish for names, and Android will continue to make them. This is a big hassle because it was never meant to be convenient. It's essentially a cache so you can view your files IN Google Drive even while offline.
NOTE: Pictures do NOT usually automatically appear in your gallery when "saved" using method 2. You have to keep telling gallery where to look. Each time a new gibberish folder is generated, you have to tell gallery to look there as well.
And that's it. Enjoy using your super cheap cloud storage plan from Google
Thanks, method #2 worked flawless!

cool beans
It does take a few more steps just to export a file-- loading the interface and ads, choosing the file name and directory, no info notification, etc-- but it has other uses I'm sure.
Yeah, I originally got it for when gmail app would only let me "preview" some attachments but gave no option to download them

The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer (here's an easy way that doesn't require downloading the Android SDK). There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone.
This should, though:
1. Download Gmail 4.2 from one of the mirrors above.
2. Rename it to Gmail2.apk.
3. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
4. Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail. Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
5. You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 4 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
6. Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
7. You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 7, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".

Thanks. I like the gmail interface and haven't found much need for pinch-to-zoom.
But the swype sideways on a message to delete or archive (as shown in the video) looks handy.
I assume this will eventually be available via normal Google Play update process (?)

Umm, just to clarify, Google asked Android Police to take down the mirrors because AP does not have distribution rights.
Installed using root explorer method. Works pretty good.
Love the pinch zoom function. The swipe to delete is pretty cool.. similar to the notification bar

Is there any app that allows you to make a folder on your computer which you can just drag and drop files into it and it then downloads to your phone instantly.. or near enough to it?
I don't want the hassle of having to (as an example) placing a file into drop box > open drop box > locate file > save file.
Is there any such thing?
Dropbox has a feature like this. You download the application on your PC (OS X, Linux, or Windows) and you set it up with your personal infomation. It'll create a folder and that folder is a synced folder.
It'll be automatically on your Dropbox and then you can download it onto your phone via the app or vice versa.
Edit: This is just a folder on your computer. Completely breaks the use of using the actual Dropbox site.

Okay.. after trying them all out... here's what iv found.
Can't seem to get drop box synced so that it automatically downloads onto my phone. I have synced enabled.
Pushbullet is prettttty good! Only thing is that i have to open the app and save the file
Airdroid is perfect except that it only has 100mb (free)
And after thinking about it.. Google+ is pretty good for sharing pictures between phone and PC.
I will keep using them all until i find the one that suits me most!
Thank you all! (i will thank you all later since iv gave 8 thanks already today lol)

Foldersync can do many things.
Well, as of 60 days form now, free sugarsync accounts will be forced to be paid, and we have 6 days to take advantage of a special 19$ for the first year / 75$ per year after that for 60 gb.... For anyone who has used the sugarsync app on android, you know that most bugs that did not render the app unusable, and many fairly basic feature requests were ignored over the past two years (see the whole syncing to SD card debacle). I get that the idea is more money - less free-loaders = better service, but there is no way that I will pay before they can prove they can provide a solid service. So.... Let's share our alternatives for those who need to rework their file syncing setup!
In the last 3 hours since I got my sugarsync ultimatum, I have found 3 possibilities (one that works great, and two that I have not fully tested yet).
1- (works great! better than sugarsync)
-Use google drive (15GB minimum if you haven't gotten some bonus of some kind over the years for being early adopters)
-This allows you to use drive sync on desktops
-You can then use Foldersync to sync on your android device
2-
Goodsync. This is paid software, but I prefer one time payments for a system I control. This is more of a "sync when you need" setup, and won't do everything automatically for you on android (but it will on desktops), but allows for unlimited space because you use your computer's hard drive as your main source of data... down side, the goodsync android app is still a long way from being on par with the sugarsync or the foldersync apps
3-
Other services with folder sync (paid version if you want to use multiple accounts at once). I have not yet tried it with services other than google drive, but I do use a similar services on my desktop that consolidate cloud drives, so I don't see why it would not work on android. If the storage provider you want to use does not support syncing, the goodsync app for desktop connects to almost any online storage provider, so you can have a reliable way to sync to the cloud, and then foldersync does the equivalent job on your android device.
Once people have added their alternatives, I will create a poll so fellow users can see the favorite solutions at a glance.
Cheers!
Uninstalling SugarSync tonight!

problem with google drive android app is that you have to manually sync each file, which is not so good if your goal is to have important files accessible at all times. I am quite happy with the drive + foldersync app though.
How is dropbox as far as selective folder syncing?
I'm getting to learn more and more about Dropbox since it came with a generous bonus storage on the Note 2 -if only for 2 years or so.
Also I read about Copy.com which comes with a 15gigs free + 5gig referral bonus (use the link in my sig if anyone wants both of us to benefit) though I'm not quite sure how well the sync'ing is so far. I think you can sync specific files but haven't fully tested it yet.
Mediafire is funny in that they are advertising their services anywhere there is new about Sugarsync giving up free plans but I haven't looked into them yet.
I'm also open to see what other people are using.
I've been using dropbox for a few years and upgraded to business package for my company since a few months ago. It works great for us.

does anyone else doing this find that dropsync has a hard time keeping large folders up to date? For my biggest one it takes nearly 40 minutes to confirm that nothing has changed.
i'm using Google Drive and Dropbox
I'll be moving to Dropbox and Google drive for things like documents, temporary storage of photos, titanium backups, etc. I've started using Crashplan for backing up my very large photo and video archive.
Sugarsync was nice, but as someone who's heavily promoted them and have dozens of referrals to my name, I feel betrayed that they would do this, even as a paying costumer who uses free accounts for my daughter and wife.

Check out Folder Sync, I was going to buy Dropsync but Folder Sync seems more versatile and cheaper.
I've moved to Copy
I've moved to Copy with it's 20GB free file sync & sharing with this referral link. It's like dropbox but with 10x more free storage. It has a single folder like Dropbox. I've used junction.exe from sysinternals to map from some of my existing folder locations to the Copy folder.
I particularly like that it has a feature that was missing in Sugarsync and that is 'view only' sharing.
Cheers,
Mark

Thanks for the tip, I didin't know Copy.
I just had a look at it and it seems promising but I have one question. Does it automatically sync any folder you choose or only photos and videos?
From the description on the play store it seems only photos and videos are automatically synced....
Thanks,

Hi Soda,
I started out using Copy on PC first, I placed a few files in my Copy directory on my PC. When I installed the Copy app on my Android phone it automatically copied all of my files onto my Phone. So it by default sync'd all my files between my PC and my phone. In the app settings you can tick an option called 'PhotoCopy' which then automatically copies all new photos taken on your phone into your Copy folder and sync's them to the cloud (by default it does this only on wifi connectivity).
I hope this helps,
All the best,
Cheers,
Mark
I'm still looking at alternatives. The option to sync any folder and choose with whom to share it was the best thing from Sugarsync service.
From what I read only 3 other companies give the same option directly:
Bitcasa
Tresorit
Wuala
Anyone uses/used one of these services?
I use Dropbox, however I combine it with FolderSync on Android together with "App Backup & Restore" so that my newly installed apps can be synced to Dropbox right away. I recommend this combination.
@marky1124
Thanks for the reply, it's what I wanted to know .
@Karsa
I will look into the alternatives and give a feedback. But for now, I'm using Foldersync with Skydrive.
Although I'm really sorry to see SugarSync go, I believe Dropbox is the best alternative way to go.
