Stock Android Recovery - Motorola Atrix 2

I know we have no way of getting back to stock since we don't have an FXZ yet but why couldn't we use the stock Android recovery upon boot then use our nandroid backup from the ATRIX 2 bootstrap incase someone is stuck on a bootloop or messes their phone up? Would this work?

It sounds plausible, we just need someone that is still within their 30 day return time that has the nerve to try it. They would have to do a nandroid then purposely soft-brick and hope and pray I guess.

Well I dont remember being able to do this on my OG Atrix but today I was messing around and powered my phone off. I was wanting to get to the boot option screen so I could boot into stock recovery. Well I did and got the usual green man with a triangle. Then I proceeded to push the same buttons that got me to the boot option screen and then the stock recovery menu showed up just like CWM recovery. Was we able to do this on the OG Atrix because I dont remember?

In the Droid razor forums they have a way to boot cwm on power up. Ill post the link later. Why couldn't we port that to our phones?

If what I have just done will work we can do the same thing upon boot without having to port anything.
We should be able to flash any zip located on the sd card upon boot via the stock android recovery.
Hoping someone with a lil more knowledge of this stuff will chime in here

The stock recovery wont work for a few reasons the biggest is you cant backup and restore. We need cwm no question about it. we need this on our phones.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385283
I have been talking to hashcode about porting his safestrap method from the droid 3 to our a2's. That would work even better because then we'd be able to restore to stock w/o an fxz or sbf.

Why can't you restore with the stock recovery? We can create backups through our bootstrap so that isnt a problem and it works just fine. But we have no option at boot which is the problem. Look at my last pic. That is my nandroid backup through our bootstrap.

I'm Uploading a video to youtube of what we need.. Hold tight. And I thought you couldn't use backups created from other recoveries?
http://youtu.be/H3fIdf5fQ70
So this is the droid 3 safestrap from hashcode working on my A2. I have been able to make backups that are actually 300mb more then the bootstrap cwm backups. I have Not tried restoring backups using it. I have replaced my phone 4 times now with best buy I don't want to try again.. I have sent hashcode some files he requested to hopefully port this over to the A2.
Check it out!

Yes I'm familiar with hashcodes safestrap and if he can get it ported to our A2 then that would be exactly what we would need. I was thinking hard about asking him for help myself. So I'm glad you did
I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous, as in making paperweights with phones
LoL
DONE SOME DIGGING AROUND AND I've ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION. NO IT WON'T WORK. STILL LEARNING EVERYDAY :/

Coming from Captivate, flashing questions

Sorry if this should be in a different thread. Not trying to get flamed. So I am coming from a captivate and am just wondering how is flashing stuff on the inspire different from the captivate? Typically most of my flashing was just done thru CWM on the captivate itself or thru ODIN. I know ODIN doesnt exist for the inspire, but what differences can I expect coming into? how do I get to recovery or download? Any answers on how the flashing experience is different would be much appreciated
Once you've rooted it's pretty much the same as captivate install rom manager and install Rom with cwm recovery. There isn't a need to flash back to stock. Just clear data and cache.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
yup, clockwork mod makes life a hell of a lot easier.
And this restore a heck of a lot better than the captivate did. I don't even use titanium backup anymore. All my txt messages and apps automatically restores including wallpaper

Thanks guys, my only question is how to get CWM on this phone after root. Im assuming its thru a kernel?
same way you do it on the captivate get rom manager from the market. Install CWM Recovery.
There's no need for special recoveries like on the captivate as there's no lagfix craziness to deal with. HTC uses Android/Linux standard file systems

Totally agree, ill never get samsung again. I would probably flash a different rom on my captivate every other day to find out which one had what bugs and what didnt work correctly, lol. The Inspire is a lot harder to root then the captivate, but is well worth it when you do, for one roms are higher quality and all 100% working, even cm7 rc1. There is no download mode for inspire, you can manually boot into bootloader mode and from there you can enter CWM Recovery.
So i looked at the HTC hack kit, are there any better instructions for rooting? just didnt see anything laid out in that thread.
Another question for yall: On the captivate when wifi was active the 3g symbol would disappear. This doesnt happen on my inspire. Does that mean hspa is still running while im connected to wifi? Battery drain is my issue with this
there's a readme in the hack kit. Very easy to follow
There is youtube two part video walkthrough, thats what i used. I learn easier if i can see it happening.
Sent from Inspire 4G using XDA App
On the vibrant (captivate) a bad kernel or Rom could mean boot loop and no hope of getting into clockwork and we would have to use odin. This doesn't happen on the inspire?
Sent from my Inspire '4g'.
ive had boot loop happen twice so far and both times i manually went into boot loader and went to CWM recovery and wiped data and reflashed then everything was fine. The one time i reflashed and still got boot loop i just restored back up and then flashed and was good to go. I made a backup right after i rooted so i wouldnt have to do it again, i suggest you do the same just to be safe.

lol dont mind the hijacking. the more questions asked the better.
the market auto restores your apps when you sign in with your google account, i cant really explain how it does this, but it sure is nice.
when you check back up my settings when you sign into google for teh first time, it starts keeping a list of market apps you've installed and restores them if you do a factory reset. doesn't seem to catch all of mine all the time though.
still have some questions regarding Flash
I read the rooting thread as well as saw the video, what I could understand is that in captivate we were rooting and then upgrading the ROM.
But here we are rooting and the downgrading.. Are we loosing any functionality? Its little difficult to understand..
can someone pls help?
You are actually downgrading the ROM then rooting THAT. After you have root, and have clockwork mod recovery installed you can install any rooted rom you like. There are a few to choose from in the Dev section.
The current Android release on the Inspire hasn't been "cracked" yet so you need to downgrade to get root.

captivate cwm works on infuse.[sort of]

just to give you guys some more confidence i ran trusselo's super easy batch scritp on my dad's windows 7 box to hack 3e recovery.
you can look at my 3e thread in captivate general but do not attempt the kernel swap methods!
use trusselo's script on windows
if it fails or you are on a mac/linux machine then use the manual 3e fix after you root the device.
after i got 3e modded for self signed update.zip zip flashing like the old 2e recovery on 2.1 sgs phones i installed rom manager and chose the captivate cwm recovery. rebooted into recovery, reinstaled packages. phone rebooted, reistaled packages again and i was sucessfully in cwm. from there i was able to backup the stock rom and installed a .zip file that just changed my build.prop (taking baby steps) i could have spoofed the build.prop in many ways but it was for the sake of testing. the flash was successful. i booted up checked for the change and confirmed it was written to /system properly.
then i rebooted and restored the backup. there were some graphical errors including a broken progress bar and a splash screen that covers the menu when the restore is done so it is difficult to navigate, but it is something. success! the restored rom booted and the old build.prop was in place proving it was a successful restore.
tomorrow i will try a replaced vending.apk (market) and the build.prop as a market fix and post it in a thread if it works. if gtg465x doesnt mind i will try to build a rom off his deodexed rom if someone doesnt beat me to it.
i think we need a bounty to buy a dev phone for someone more knowledgable than me. i dont want to go all cowboy and brick this thing, the captivate had much more as far as backup plans so im being more cautious with this one. and even if i had a dev phone i wouldnt be of as much help as others around xda.

Very interesting... so if we get stuck in a bootloop we could just recover from a Nandroid backup without having to revert to stock, etc.

Too bad that wont work for us... it is in the boot.img, and we can't touch that until we get the bootloader unlocked.

Ah, nevermind
But just wondering... if it's based off of CWM, and we can reboot into CWM, and we can get CWM to appear on every boot... then shouldn't we be able to get something like this to work without modifying the boot.img?

Nope, if you use the razr boot hijack, it is exactly that, a hijack. It uses several "android/Linux" binaries that it "hijacks", to allow you get into CWM, just before the android UI comes up, but after the kernel is started. To get the particular hack you mentioned, working, you will have to modify the boot image, to include the recovery on boot, that will start just before the kernel is actually started/starting.
Like others have said, that since we have the fxz it does not really matter. Since I have really been doing some serious hacking and development on this phone, I have soft bricked or boot-looped my phone I can't count how many times, and even the razr CWM on boot does not always help. A good backup from CWM, and the fxz is where it is at, and really the best solution for things like this.
Most people on this site who have this phone really should not worry too much about these things, because the likelihood of doing this is very small unless you really are doing some serious hacking or development work like lfaber06 and I are. We will usually not release something to the rest of the world without testing it first, and giving explicit directions on how to do the job without bricking the phone. For those brave souls that are trying to do some dev work, and are new to it, until we get the bootloader unlocked, again the best bet is the fxz and a good backup from CWM.

[HELP] CM9 Issues..

So I've upgraded to CM9(cm9-droid3-20120216-2345) which went fine.. However I have no service, no market, and for some reason the USB/Portal doesn't work the same with CM9.. So I can't flash my phone, and when I try to use backup/recovery to Clockwork Recovery through safestrap I am getting "Couldn't open directory. No files found."
I know the files are there, I can see them when I go to 'Install zip from sdcard'.. At this point I just want to get back to SuperCharged_V_5 and I have been beating my head all morning over this.. I have no idea what else to try from here as RSD Lite does not pick up my phone anymore.. What do I do guys

It does not work for our phone yet. lfaber06 and I have been working on it and CM7 for SEVERAL months now. The issue with CM9 is finding a radio for our phone that works with ICS (which is what CM9 is based off of). Go take a look at the post in the development section on it.
For those that would like to take a look at flashing it, you MUST use safestrap, which is having issues right now, and is very low priority since we have CWM through bootstrap and the CWM on boot hack.
Here is where the CM9 post is located, but I advise that you read the WHOLE thread, and if you would like to help you can start looking for a working radio that is similar to ours that is already on ICS.

Atrix 2 ics leak #2 stuck on cm10 boot!

Okay, so here's a long story short. I flashed AT&T ICS leak #2 when I first got my replacement due to a brick. I ran SCV7 for a week or so and decided to try out CM10. I restored my backup of stock/rooted backup. Uninstalled highjacks, packages and app (bootmenu) itself. I then installed our OG A2 bootstrap, installed fine, installed CM10, played around with it for awhile. Realized I didnt reinstall the OG A2 Bootstrap so went ahead and did that. (without booting into recovery yet) I then later in the day decided to REBOOT my phone to only find me stuck on the CM10 boot animation. I battery pulled, plugged in to see if any recovery would show, none, just the battery charge percentage. I then battery pulled again, got into stock recovery, tried a data and cache wipe to no effect. My problem is, there is NO FXZ for the AT&T leak #2, I have no recovery besides stock and the only thing I can do is take my 32GB SD card out and add/delete files/everything. I saddly did not make a copy of the system.img but was wondering if anyone else possibly did? This would be greatly appreciated as I am stuck with a soft brick until then or a new FXZ to work with AT&T leak #2. Any suggestions or help is very much appreciated. Thanks all for reading and I'm praying for a miracle in my phone right about now lol!

Hey, and sort of welcome back...
But I hate to be the bearer of bad, bad news... you have a softbrick, and there is NOTHING you can do.
Next time, read everything in an OP... LOL, look who I am telling this to....
The CM10 installs come with their own CWM built in, and flashing bootstrap is what bootlooped you, so after you get another warranty replacement (yes, you HAVE to do this), I would install leak #1 ONLY, then flash cm10 with bootstrap, then do not reinstall any boot hijacks or CWM "like" recovery (bootmenu), because all you have to do it hit the vol down button right as you see the blue led flash during the M dual core logo.
Or enter the CM10 recovery menu and so on and so forth.
This is how I got out of a cm10 boot-loop.
I just restored from bootmenu backup via adb.

I will get with alteredlikeness and see if we can possibly think of something together on this one. The first thought would be to try an mearet/searet fxz for 2.3.6 since they can fxz back with out any mods to thier 2.3.6 or 2.3.5 fxz from thier ICS leaks, but I am thinking that will still brick you, but interested to see anyhow.
So I will see if alteredlikeness and I can think of some other way to try. He or I will PM you either way.

I will get with alteredlikeness and see if we can possibly think of something together on this one. You know, I was seeing in recovery how youbcan flash an update through sd AND system which has a lost and found folder and recovery folder. Dont know if this is of any info but either way because I wouldnt know how to put anything in system since I cant seem to get adb to recognize or moto-fastboot...I'm in a very confused state of mind and almost came to the point of hard brick but I refuse. I'll leave it up to ya devs. Thanks againg everyone.
