Well i have 2 phones, a mogul (no service)
and my new htc touch pro.
Mogul has been in a drawer for 2 weeks now, and still STILL has battery life.
got me thinking. it has no service, so i put it into airplane mode..
so basically its just sitting there.
so i began to think, why does my HTC TP die in no time.
then i remembered, im running Gmail via Imap using flexmail.
basically this connects to the internet, and has a live connection to my gmail email.
so all day long its tracking my gmail,
i went into flexmail, and turned idle mode off, and set it to check email every 15 minutes.
i just did this right before i typed this, so i will post in the morning how it worked out.
if nothing at all this may inspire some of you to look at things your phone is doing that you didnt realize.
i update in morning.
I have mine set to check 2 accounts, a hotmail account every 4 hours and my pop account every 30 mins. I also have it set to auto disconnect data after 3 minutes idle, radio mode on so it can still receive calls. On average when I go to sleep for 8 hours and get up, I get a drop of 3%-4% battery during that time. Not bad at all. My tilt drops at least 8%-10% with the same setup.
ok, how do you have it set to drop data after idle time.
this may help in my quest.
I have mine disconnect after 1 min idle, check hotmail and regular e-mail once every two hours, and try to keep all extraneous programs from accessing Internet without me knowing. I can get up to about two days' normal usage (as of right now, 2:33pm, my battery is about 35% on its second day without a charge).

pssst how do you guys do this?
It seems everyday there is a new thread about a possible solution to the TP battery issue. I've ran the most basic test possible. Mogul by TP, both hard reset, both with radios off. Removed both from charger at 0700 before work. Got home at about 2100. Mogul was at %90 and TP was at %60.

Use Advanced Config. Left softkey brings up more options, to disconnect data after a certain time is one of them
What is a soft key? Sorry, I'm new to all this...

LOL! I laughed so hard I just had to comment. Just in case you were serious.
Soft Keys are the onscreen buttons usually at the very bottom of the screen. I.e. on the Home screen Calender and Contacts would be soft keys.
Except for the Raphael, on most HTC WinMo devices most softkeys have hardkey equivalents that are usually directly under the softkeys.
Well i now have a battery life of a few days (not phoning a lot or using Wifi alot) Also only a drop of 2-3% during the night.
I installed the RomeOS 1.51 whithout any modifications, but if i install the HTC Task manager my battery drains in 1 day (sometimes in 9 hours) so i'm not using that tool anymore
This isn't exactly relevant to the email conversation, and I suppose I could find one of the other 300 battery threads to post this in, but I made a bit of an accidental discovery too.
I had to make a trip for about 10 days and chose to only take my other phone with me. I left the fuze fully charged and without the sim card in, and with gps, wi-fi, and bluetooth turned off (all radio stuff was off). When I got back, at least 11 days total time gone, the battery was sitting at either 66% or 76% (was a few weeks back, I forget)
Not a huge revelation since there should be virtually no power drain with screen off and no active radio, but it further enforces the theory that the radio is a prime suspect for battery drain...and radio roms in particular are worth testing.
I agree that the drain has to do with the Radio.. I have a sprint touch pro and it will drain in a couple hours..
I left it sitting on the table a couple days ago, It was sitting for 2 days and when I checked it it was only down to 60% I also had bluetooth and wifi turned ON. The phone radio was turned off.
I thought the phone was turned off so i did not mean to test it like this but i thought it is worth mentioning.
wifi on and connected
bluetooth on but nothing connected
Phone radio turned off.
2 days sitting and the battery only down to 60%
This phone usually drains to 40% in 4 hours just sitting on standby in my pocket. Does this not proove it is the sprint radio killing the phone.
If you're running a default ROM and haven't changed the power saving settings, wifi turns off when the device auto-sleeps.. bluetooth remains on but by it's design its power draw is very minimal without an active connection.
The phone radio maintains a constant connection to the cell towers, and it doesn't have a deep sleep mode (it has to remain ready to wake the rest of the phone up when a call/sms/mms comes in) - if for whatever reason it's signal drops below a treshold, and it starts hunting for different towers etc. it'll bump it's transmitter up to full power for a period of time..
As long as you're maintaining an active connection to the cell tower, there's gonna be power drain. On the GSM side of things you can minimize it by locking the phone to GSM until you need 3G, the nature of GSM allows it to use less power both in idle and active transmission modes than WCDMA.
As I have tested and re-tested different ways to conserve battery life I can honestly say there is no miracle cure to make it last longer. If you're burning through lots of data (via 3G, HSDPA, etc) you're gonna have even less life. Moderation in usage seems to work best although that's not a viable option for most of us, myself included. With all the talk about better drivers and power plans, has anyone looked at the possability of the battery being crappy? Could it simply be not enough juice for a device of this caliber?

You're getting unusually good life. In a good week, I get about two days out of a single charge. When I'm not using several features, the battery drain is approximately 30%-40% in one day. This would be a light workday. More times than not, the drain is around 60%-70%.

I am running current widget. This phone is a beast and eats 250mA while idle while my OG droid only was taking 20-30mA. no wonder this sucker dies in 4 hours
That shouldn't be that high when idle. I'm doing idle power tests right now, all the time in fact, on my nexus. Checked the thunderbolt and inspire at the store. At least they seem more efficient with screen on, hitting around 430mA at max brightness. My nexus will hit 750mA which drives me nuts.
I'm comparing ginger bread idle power, and Google seems to have made enormous improvements. Idle current draw is now at 8 mA, where on froyo for me its around 18mA. More testing needed.
But I feel that slcd screen is way way better for power than the amoled since most uses show white color anyway.

well its pretty consistent idle power draw of 200-250. i have 4G on and syncing on as well. When i am using the phone with the screen on i average around 450-500. when i turn of 4G and have good 3G signal i can get the phone around 45mA
45mA is still high. I just wiped my phone because I'm averaging 50mA idle all the time no matter what. On this clean install I'm now at 15mA very consistently. But what's driving me nuts is I loaded stock ginger bread, and that ROM stays dead even at freaking 4 - 7mA. It's beautiful, my battery lasts incredibly long on it. But switching back to cyan7 I can't get below 14mA, and its driving me mad.
I just swapped ROMs again a few hours ago to do more tests. I hacked the nexus battery driver to do some useful tests. Wonder if the thunderbolt uses the same driver.
My idle draw is an average 40 with 4G. I'm using the current widget.
It also draws the same on airplane mode. Something is screwed up somewhere...

Your posts aren't very informative for someone trying to compare.
What apps are you running background, which services (sync, location, etc), which radios on (wifi sleep policy, BT on, 4G/3G area, etc), screen brightness settings? Even the app will have an impact on draw, since keeping a log file will cause some juice drain each time the log is written, so update interval is probably necessary for the discussion to be meaningful.
You're getting your numbers from the log and when the phone is actually truly idle (ie. untouched, screen off) for a while?
Not criticizing at all, but these kind of discussions can end up just frustrating folks because of ambiguities...kind of like the posts where someone says (I get 5 days on my battery with "moderate use", and it turns out that guy's idea of "moderate use" means it sits untouched all day except a couple of minutes browsing).
I just installed the current widget out of curiosity, so not much data to go on, but with the screen on 50% brigthness, wifi on, BT on, sync on, several apps having been opened I saw about 140mah. Turned the brightness down to minimum and it dropped to 76, then 45. Let the phone idle scree off for a few minutes, and it was showing 32 when I first turned it back on.
My log shows that during the idle period for a couple of minutes, the phone was drawing between 30 and 40 each pull (every ten seconds).

Ill post a copy of my Log later on. Right now the results wouldnt be fair because i am at my parents place and their house is made of some material where you go from 3 to 0 bars of reception when you walk in the door. But usually my general setup is 3g/4g on wifi off, BT on but not connected to anything, GPS on but not actively lookin for sataillites, and then a bunch of my regular apps. I mean let me put it like this. in my first post i discuss the difference i have seen in current consumption between the TB and my OG droid. The phones are set up EXACTLY the same with the same programs running in the background. The only difference is the TB has that extra 4G radio. I live in West LA so generally the coverage should be 100% 3g/4g. anyhow ill get a copy of the log.
my currentwidget is almost always above 100mA and ive got 4g off, wifi off, gps off, BT off, no apps running etc. very frustrating to see this phone die in 6 hours no matter what
This has been my experience also. my history from last night showed a peak of about 400mah discharge and a min of about 120 mah discharge. Not sure what is going on.
I have wifi off, bt off, gps off(using vzw location services though), with words with friends, double twist, battery booster, goog voice, lookout, bat indicator service, myphonemrules, simple service, craigs checker service, weather toggle widgets, nobars, night time service, battery monitor widget, and swiftkey, the rest are vzw bloatware services or htc processes in the background. Backlight is at about 30-40, and timeout is set to about 1 min. Since the last restart I have gotten as low as -50mah and max is about -350. I can't say what all was running during the night because I changed few things this morn to try and fix my drain, which as seemed to help, but not a lot.
Attached is a copy of my history since 3/24.
Once we are able to undervolt our kernel, our idle usage should drop significantly. Until then, I'm keeping a charger handy and waiting for my eBay batteries to get here, lol.
I have the extended battery, which I can't use with my case of course, if I really need it. But I like having a case on my phone because I shattered the screen on my D2 a week after I got my last one. Not trying to do that with the TB.
so to revisit this post a couple months in.. i am on the new GB leak. still idle at 40mA still sucking power like nobodys business.. wtf
Anyone not totally impressed with the battery life of this phone? I actually think the Thunderbolt held a better charge.
I got nearly 30 hours out of the battery, you just got to know how manage the drain resources. So yeah im pretty impressed by that.
How do you manage the Drain Resources?
I use a profiles app,
ex of one of my profiles: when I am at home, I have it set to turn off bluetooth, turn on wifi, turn screen brightness down and the screen is on a short timeout timer. I also have gps turn off.
then there is a "car mode" profile: it turns of wifi, sets brightness to automatic, turns on bluetooth to connect to my vehicle and turns on GPS
Dont leave things like FB and Twitter auto-refresh less than once an hour, I had used that on the charge when I first got it (used it on my X) where it updated 15 every 15-30 mins, besides realizing its pointless, it drained the battery pretty quickly.
now the 30 hours was during mixed use, a few phone calls, some browsing and some app installing and such. I don't expect to get that out of heavy times and definitely not when playing games.
It should also be pointed out that 4G is not available in my area, so I have it set to CDMA only so that it's not trying to constantly find 4G coverage.
My DC's battery-life is significantly better than my TB's. *shrug*

Damn i almost spat my coffee lol
my TB would die in under 3 hours, im a heavy business user but that was bad bad bad for any phone, my TB would still drain battery while plugged into my car charger while using gps, all the charger did was stop it from dying withing 30 mins lol
loved the TB hated the signal and battery!
The first day I had my Charge it had really bad battery life. The next day (after running the battery all the way down and then charging back up) it was much better, and now it's always like that. It still doesn't compare to the Droid X, but I knew that before buying, and I've got the better screen and 4G.

Scott is right. If you don't have wifi connected it will constantly search for it causing battery drain. If you leave and don't plan on being on wifi I would shut it off so that your phone isn't constantly searching for a network. There are some battery settings in the wifi menu that can help with that though just not very much.
P.S. oops edited sorry Scott lol

I'll take that as a complement.
I disagree, every phone i have seen uses significantly more battery having wifi turned on, I definately notice it on mine, and im talking about being connected to a wifi the entire time. My battery life with wifi on has always been **** compared to it being turned off, Iphone's all of them including 4, droid x, vibrant, captivate, inspire all the same result with wifi enabled.
Do a expierment charge phone to 100% before going to bed, lets say 10 pm to 6 am check battery power lvl, next night enable wifi, I am absolutely certain that u will have a much larger drain.
as for does it drain more while in use than 3g or 4g is another issue, some say it uses less than mobile network to transfer data because a mobile tower can be a few miles away while the router is no more than 200 feet. I personally think wifi still uses more battery, however i do use wifi when available to keep my data usage down. if u disabled 3g altogether then maybe. but with both on u are powering another radio.

If you're saying that having WiFi on uses more battery than having WiFi off, which is how I read the first part of your post, I'd have to say you absolutely correct.
I think the question was whether WiFi used more battery than mobile data.
Mobile data uses more battery because its constantly trying to look for a better connection. E/3G/4G/ETC...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
according to alot of other post about this same issue say wifi uses more battery either way because your 3g /4g radio is still on when using wifi
Both right
If you have WiFi always on, constantly polling for it, when not connected, you will use >battery. If you are connected to WiFi, and thus not polling all the time, <battery usage.
I use Llama to disable my WiFi when I am out not using GPS. It knows I leave home or work based on location as tringulated by the cell towers, thus GPS doesn't have to be on. Your phone is always polling for towers anyway, even with data shut off, so this does not use any battery to speak of. There are a lot of towers here in my basic hood, so Llama seems to identified that I leave home from 100-1000 meters, depending which direction I go.
You will use less battery if you shut off WiFi polling while you have no chance to connect to Wifi, that is for sure!
I use Llama to shut off and on all sorts of stuff based on location or a set of conditions. It is all logic based: If condition A exists, perform B toggle. Works great for me in an area with lots of towers so location at home vs. work vs. out is determined rather easily and accurately in my experience.
Edit: other conditions available include days of the week, time of day, headset or bluetooth enabled, etc.
Wifi definitively uses less battery than 3g from all the tests I've done and common experiences around the forum. Its not even close.
Can you change the wifi interval in the build.prop file to have it search after a longer delay? I know on mine it is set for 15 (seconds)?

Saving Your Droid Charge's Battery
We all know that the droid charge is decent with battery but some functions just drain it so quick that it seems like its the phone itself. I have posted in several other threads about saving batter. I wanted to put together a single thread on all of the many ways as to save your battery. Some of these ways can be done through various apps free and paid. Some users of android opt to buy an extended battery for their phones to combat the high power consumption of the phone. This isn't always the best way to handle this as with the extended battery, you are very limited almost never going to find a case that protects your phone. Here are several factors that drain the charge's battery:
1. 4G. Its a known fact that Verizon's 4G connection is the fastest LTE that is in the market. This function is one of the most battery intensive functions that the phone has. While this radio is active it pulls a lot of juice from the battery to ensure that you stay connected and have the highest bandwidth possible.
2. Mobile Data. Keeping this function on allows you to recieve your email notifications, mms, and all other apps that require a data connection. This function can use 3g or 4g connection for data.
3. Screen Display. Though with the super Amolled plus screen is the best on the market, this is THE most drain on your battery.
4. Accounts and Sync. This function is a harsh one to control because it isn't always active and can run in the background or while the phone display is off.
I have listed some of the major functions of the phone that drain the battery. Below are some steps to prevent and/or help your droid charge last throughout the day. I use my phone at work while I am away from my computer or just during breaks and can last throughout an entire 10 hour work day without worry of my charge going dead.
1A. 4G. There are several things to be done to ensure that you don't let one of the droid charge's best feature become your worst enemy. While not using your phone for any data intensive apps, you should always turn this feature off to conserve battery. To turn this feature off, while on your home screen: Menu-->Settings-->Wireless & Networks-->Mobile Networks-->System Selection-->and choose CMDA Only (this is the 3g Network).
There is an easier way to get this feature on and off by a 4G toggle app and is linked here--> https://market.android.com/details?id=com.coreyapps.togglelte
2A. Mobile Data. While the above should be done every time you use/don't use your phone for data, this should be turned off always if you are connected to any wifi source. This also ensures that both your 3g and 4g radios are turned off while in a poor signal area and will save your battery the strain from trying to gain a signal. While turning this off, you will not receive data unless you are connected to wifi, but you will be able to receive calls and sms messages.
3A. Screen Display. This is the number one cause of battery drain. While there are preventative measures to ensure that you limit the strain, if you are using your phone a lot for anything, you will need to charge any device. You should pick a screen lock out timer that best suites you and you should let the phone turn the display off. I have mine set to 30 seconds and believe this to be the happy median between the two extremes. 15 seconds seems to be to short and 1 min is way to long. Note: If using the phone there should be no reason to use over 30 seconds.
4A. Accounts & Sync. This function isn't as bad as the others but can leave you puzzled if this is your first droid. This is the silent killer...To combat this only allow your phone to sync over wifi and the best is to set times to sync every 12 to 24 hours. I use 24 hours and it syncs around 2 a.m. while I am sleeping. To get your phone on a schedule like this, stay up to the wee hours of the morning or until you know for sure that you will be at home at the time for the sync to occur. When the time is right, go through the Manage Accounts and through each of your accounts and sync.
There are many other factors that could play a role in your phone not lasting the day. With the newer phones and the 4G capabilities, we should train ourselves and not our batteries. With this it is up to each individual user to ensure that they manage their phones in a proper manner for proper results. I have used an extended battery until i got fed up with not having a case for my phone. Once going back to the stock battery, I had to train myself to manage my phone to ensure that I could last an entire day on one full battery charge.
Contrary to popular belief, giving your Droid Charge some extra juice throughout the day isn't a bad thing. A full uninterrupted charge is best at night but throughout the day it isn't bad to sneak a good 10-15 min charge in. My battery life is amazing with following my routine of things when I use and don't use my phone.
There are several apps that can aid you squeezing the most life out of your battery. Juice Defender is the main one with many options and very customization.
Please let me know if anyone else has any more information on either battery intensive apps or functions and ways to correct them and I will be sure to update this post for everyone. Hope you enjoyed my write up.

For me I use it while away from my desk and don't want to take my laptop into the server room. I don't have time to sit at my desk and charge my phone. I am in a work place where there is no cell service.
Go ahead and see how long your battery last without service, your radios will suck it dry within a couple of hours.
Didn't say you have to do all of that, as there are apps to help you achieve it.
A black wallpaper helps too.

Ive seen other posts like this before. I know you're trying to help but there's no way I would go through all of that to have a smartphone. What kernel are you using? What Rom? I use my phone throughout the day a lot. I can go 10-12 hours with HEAVY use without turning my phone into a dumbphone. Not all of the time but most of the time you are doing something wrong if you're getting 4 hours of heavy phone use. Either that or you're on the wrong Rom/kernel and/or haven't calibrated it correctly. In my opinion, what's the use of even having a smartphone like this if you're going to constantly turn it into a dumbphone?

I haven't had a steady rom/kernel package in the last week. I have been testing Imnuts new infinity1031 build.
Your not turning your "smartphone" into a "dumbphone". You are managing your phone. No one said to completely turn off notifications/app updates (ie weather) on your phone.
When you say that you get 10-12 hours of heavy use, do you mean data use or just sms messaging etc? Also there is no phone out there that can stay connected to 4G using data and last 10-12 hours.
So your heavy use, isn't really heavy...
I agree, I can get two days or whatever on my battery UNTIL I run Sirius Radio online (& I have 4G)
If I listen to the NFL Sirius online channel I can't make it through a standard work day without using a fat extended battery (& it doesn't matter what ROM/modem I'm using)

I never turn anything off. Data is always left on (4G). When I am at home, I will connect via wifi but when I go to work or church or whatever Im on 4G. I have my notifications set to check every hour (Facebook, twitter, tapatalk, Gmail, weather, and Google plus). I text quite a bit throughout the day. Probably on the phone talking an average of 30 minutes a day. I jump on the browser quite a bit. I read twitter, Facebook, and tapatalk quite a bit throughout the day so screentime is average of about two hours. I listen to music at least an hour or so a day. So, again, consider myself fairly heavy user. It seems like I'm always on my phone.

I work in a huge metal building, opposite in a 4g area. I've found my 4g radio will drain my battery fast if the 4g signal is low. This is because the phone will keep increasing the power out until it gets good 2-way communication with the tower. If you're using 4g in a good coverage area and have good signal you're probably not going to see the battery drain nearly as much. Personally I use tasker to automatically control the data connection as I move between work and home. I use WiFi at home since its less battery intensive than 4g.
