Got the official update today, was so excited. did not relise i would have so much trouble with it. first off i didnt relise having a rooted phone even with stock rom meant i could not install it. so i followed a few tutorials on here and installed my original RUU was fine but now after it all working, i downloaded the update and its reboots and comes up with an android phone with a red triangle then reboots. so i googled it and thought it my be recovery problem. so i re unlocked my phone. flashed the original ville_recovery_signed.img. re ran the ruu exe and all went well. downloaded the updated officialy again and still the same error? i have no idea what to do next, any help?
Thanks
I'm using the default ROM for my One X and I'd like to update it (I haven't since I got it 6 month ago); do I need to re-lock the bootloader and unroot it before I can use the OTA update? Also it's been a while since I even fiddled with my phones software so I forgot anything else I may have done, is there a way I can check to see what else has been done and if it's safe to update it?
Currently I have:
Android Version: 4.0.3
HTC Sense Version: 4.0
Software Number: 1.73.631.1
HTC SDK API Level: 4.11
HTC Extension Version: HTCExtension_403_1_HA_4
What firmware are u on currently for starters

Your phone should be factory default before performing OTA updates or results may be unexpected.
Most OTA updates are patch file based and require the files to be exactly what is expected.
There have been known issues with root being detected and the OTA failing.
Rooted phones progressing with an update but root lost after the update.
System files being modified and the OTA failing.
Recovery must be factory; not TWRP or CWM.
CID and MID must suit OTA.
The only modification I would consider safe through all OTA's so far has been SuperCID.
If you have any interest in rooting and flashing custom ROMs, I would suggest rooting and unlocking the bootloader now, while you are on 1.73, and not updating via OTA. The latest 2.20 update will also update your hboot, which plugs the holes by which kernels and radios can be flashed from recovery.
Since you're with att you can expect the jelly bean update any time from now till the end of the world which isn't fun waiting for .. I'd suggest if you were rooted download goo manager flash twrp....than flash a solid ics Rom if your prefer ice sense or you can go venture into the jb realms

Agree. If you are already BL unlocked and rooted, why go through the hassle of relocking the BL and returning to stock, just to wait for the OTA?
Just flash a JB ROM, as there are already stock and custom JB ROMs posted in Development.
Plus, until the OTA actually hits, we don't know if it will even be rootable. They have plugged the existing root exploits with every successive AT&T OTA for this phone so far. No reason to think any different for the JB update.
Just flash a JB ROM and stay rooted.
Ya I really like viper xl v3 . Just apply fix listed on op and you should be good to go

Stock OTA is not WORTH IT IMO, been there
Reselling the phone is probably the only reason i'd revert to stock.
Ok, so I tried to flash Android Revolution HD 18.0 instead of going back to stock. I used TWRP, but it said "unable to read zip file" and the flash failed, now my phone won't start up it just shows the HTC screen with "this build is for development purposes..." and continuously turns on and off.

Ok you're really lucky you didn't just brick your phone.... You want to stay in the att one x forums.... Notice theres a title diff. You're lucky it didn't succesfully flash or your phone would be dead... That's an international one x rom

Stick to the ROM's in our forum, I never heard of anything like that ROM for our phone sorry. Lucky you didn't brick it
O damn I feel very stupid now...
Can someone recommend me a JB ROM?
Also how would I even install one now? The AR HD one was the only ROM I had on my SD card
Edit: I figured out the Mount function in TWRP, so I know how to add new ROMs now

Try them all, they are all good, the time it takes to ask for other peoples opinions you could have test driven them all yourself.
Are you looking for jb sense?

I'm just going to try a couple like wrecker suggested now that I've figured out how to flash ROM's properly
Thanks for your guys' helps
Is there a way to back up my apps/texts and stuff when flashing ROM's? I totally forgot about that and lost all of it, I didn't have anything particularly important, but it'd be a hassle to redownload everything everytime. I had Titanium Backup, but that's not a recovery for if you reflash right?

So I installed Cyanogen 10.0.0 but it didn't come with Google Play so I installed Gapps as well; now I keep getting the "Android Keyboard ASOP has stopped working" and I can't do anything. I've tried multiple versions of Gapps but they all give the error. I've also tried installing a keyboard apk on it's own but I am still unable to type anything.
Edit: Also when I downloaded Google Play as an apk separately it would crash immediately, but when I installed it from Gapps it was ok.

I have a verizon htc one m8. When I go to settings > software update > check new, it always comes back with a "download unsuccessful" error and it says "we were not able to download this update. to retry, go to settings > software update". I have also tried updating via the htc sync manager but when i try to update, it says something like live update server is not reachable or something. my htc is rooted and bootloader unlocked + s-off. i have read somewhere that having a custom recovery makes it impossible for ota so i flashed the stock recovery and tried it but to no avail. also when i first rooted my phone i did a backup immediately before i started deleting all the bloatware and apps that i didn't want. and when i restored to that first backup it still doesnt work. another thing is that i currently live in india and i bought my phone from the states. that's all the information i can think of. any help would be greatly appreciated.

In order to accept the OTA you need to have the stock recovery along with an unrooted stock ROM with NO system modifications, that includes removed bloatware.
So pretty much you need to flash an unrooted stock ROM then revert to stock recovery. If you're just looking for the firmware however, there is a thread in the Development section of the Verizon M8 forum for that.

Can be rooted.
A US OTA update won't download to your phone in India. But why OTA??? Download and flash the 4.4.3 firmware, then flash a rom of your choosing. If you want pure VZW stock, scrosler has a stock rooted rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2874699
Even better, flash his CleanROM 2.0
Thank you to all that replied. I think my problem is that my phone was bought from the states and I'm using it in India, just like berndblb said, Anyways, thanks to dottat I've flashed the new update into my phone through fastboot. So happy to be running the new firmware. Anyways thank you everyone who took their time to reply.

Hi everyone.
Got S-OFF Through the Sunshine method a few days ago.
No matter what custom ROM I installed I wasn't able to boot -- even messing with custom after flashing the lollipop firmware (this thread: ) I finally got my first custom ROM to actually boot last night (ARHD 40.3), only to find the roaming icon in the status bar, with no data after I turned off roaming.
I was worried that, according to one warning elsewhere, I may have corrupted my "NV partition," and that was causing the data problems. However, a quick NANDROID restore of my previous working stock ROM (w/root) booted with full cell service no problem. So that indicates that I don't have a corrupted NV partition.
Am I missing something simple within the ROM? I've rebooted a few times, the SIM gets recognized and I have my correct phone number, and I've tried the typical 2G/3G/4G auto options/selections in the mobile data settings...to no avail.
----
As an aside, everytime I exit/reboot with CWM (using cwm_v6.0.4.8_m8vzw-3.img ), it says "You may lose root. Attempt to regain root? (This process is irreversible...) yes/no. I'm wondering if this matters at all? I have root just fine inside my stock ROM, and full S-OFF, so I don't think it matters but I thought I'd ask just to be sure.
Related note: Is TWRP "better"? I did try to FASTBOOT flash recovery of the latest TWRP (twrp-2.8.5.0-m8_wlv.img) for my phone, but that recovery doesn't boot. (I saw an indication yesterday that I might just need to flash this TWRP recovery from inside a ROM or something...but in any case, the recovery seems to be working fine overall.)
----
My apologies that this isn't in the right thread(s) -- I haven't a lot of time before I go on a trip next week, and figured I would just post to see who could point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance for all the help!
Everyone around these forums, myself included, seem to be using twrp and you did describe the current version number. I would first recommend figuring out how to get twrp installed. It's weird that you were unsuccessful getting it flashed with fastboot. To make sure, the device was recognized by "fastboot devices" and you typed "fastboot flash recovery <name_of_file>.img" right? You might also try finding a copy of the recovery that has been loaded into a 0p6bimg file that can be flashed automatically in the bootloader. I think captain throwback posted one for a user somewhere in this forum a week or two ago.
Did you flash the latest s-off ruu? You need the latest firmware for most of the current roms. That is likely why none of them boot.
...
Up to speed =)
Thanks to the first two posters! I did get TWRP finally installed (seems more capable than cwm), and did flash the firmware prior to posting the thread, but the ROMs still didn't install or work properly.
After flashing the latest RUU, I flashed SkyDragon, which seems to be working well!
Also have learned a lot more about the entire process...
Thanks again!
There does seem to be a snag with TWRP and the new 5.0 firmware. Seems like you finally got around it. I was newly S-Off and wanted to go from 4..4.4 to 5.0.
I went this route using the top firmware which has TWRP built in:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159
Another issue is it must be flashed twice. For me it took three times. I also flashed the new radio although it may have already been in the firmware. The dev that posted the above also wrote your ROM so found a good match.

What version of twrp did you flash? I haven't had any issues flashing ROM's. Some of them do take a long time to boot at first.
Already created thread in the wrong place https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3952280
I have HTC U11+ TW version. Ever since I got the Pie update, my phone is freezing a lot. I need to force restart it 10+ times a day. I tried factory reset, clear cache, etc. Nothing works. I did not have any experience with flashing, but I have been reading a lot. I have my bootloader unlocked with S-ON.
My current build number is 2.15.709.1, since I wanted to downgrade, I tried flashing stock image HTC_U11+_TW_1.24.709.999_Images_OTA using fastboot (no TWRP). My phone went into a bootloop when I did that. I think this is because I can only flash an image with the same build number? Anyway, I flashed a HTC_U11+_TW_2.15.709.1_Images_OTA image and my phone is back to where it was, Android Pie (no bootloop), but still freezing a lot.
I found the HTC_DevInfo_Tool.zip tool on this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/u11/how-to/guide-downgrade-htc-u11-oreo-to-nougat-t3754481, but I am not sure if it will work on my phone.
Can someone advise what should I do to downgrade? Also did anyone face a similar problem after the update?
I found someone tried what I wanted to do here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-u11/help/error132-signature-error-downgrade-htc-t3948079
Looks like it wont work?
