Anti-virus tools tend to block a lot of this. Try disabling them for a moment whilst you try to download.

Are there any programs out there with the same functionality?
downloading question
can you just choose a torrent website and choose the file and download > open with the torrent program on the phone or is there a special process i might not be seeing to actually download something?
oh wow, soon as you download it, it auto opens, I saved it to the torrent program folder on the SD card, don't know if that makes a difference though
will downloading this stuff be likely picked up by your service provider and get you told on? I want to download UFC112 but it seems iffy
What it does..
The Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. This file is loaded into memory at startup, then Android checks the Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which enables it to override addresses in the DNS. This prevents access to the listed sites by redirecting any connection attempts back to the local (your) phone. Another feature of the HOSTS file is its ability to block other apps from displaying ads (not all).
How to install..
unzip..
transfer hosts file to the tools folder of your sdk installation
open terminal with android connected and adb drivers installed
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb remount
adb push hosts /system/etc
exit
..or simply use Root Explorer
You are now protected against 14,714 ads, banners, sites and 3rd party Cookies
works on any 1.5 ROM, not sure if 1.6, 2.0 or 2.1 since i only use cupcake
Awesome! I will test it out on 2.1 right now!
EDIT: There's no download link though lol. As soon as there is one, I will test it out on 2.1!

sorry for that, file is now uploaded! let us know if it works on 2.1. I'm not sure if 2.1 stores the hosts file in system/etc still.
Installed on quietcblongs AOSP 1.6 and it installed without a hitch. went to popupcheck.com and it passed all the popup test. So it seems to be working on my end.
edit: Also blocks ads on some of my apps

Not sure wish I had of tested before installed for the popup blocker. I do know some apps still have adds where it appears 1 doesn't
can i still surf the 18+ sites with this shiz?
Tip:If you open the hosts file with notepad you can see all of the blocked stites

Yes you can, it only blocks ads and risky sites. Those sites you mentioned are full of ads, so with this file they will actually load faster.
Is there anyway to use this to change what DNS is used? I'd like to set it to OpenDNS.

you cannot change mobile network's DNS, but you can however, using wifi set a static IP and therefor change your wifi's DNS to openDNS.
doesnt this just duplicate the functionality of "AdFree" on the market? minus the updatability of the hosts file from adfree.
Some people just don't feel like downloading an app from the market when all it takes is to push an updated host file to /system/etc. I prefer doing everything manually anyways. You learn more about how things work. Instead of having an app do everything for you, now you know where the file is located, how it works, and using that information, you can easily update it whenever you want to filter out other known servers of spy/adware to suit your needs.

Hey guys, I just switched from Sprint to ATT and picked up the Inspire 4g today for free! Im having trouble rooting it. Ive read all I can find and I am downloading the aahk hack kit. when I attempt to open or unzip the downloaded folder I get an error stating "the compressed folder is invalid" I have tried to redownload and get the same error. It wont even let me start the process. Please forgive me if I am an idiot and im missing something easy. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
just to verify, you are downloading the ace hack kit to your computer right?
you dont actually use it on the phone itself.
also, if you are using download managers (not like the built in firefox one, but add-ons), those can play hell with downloads like this

sounds like your file never finishes the actual download.
how are you trying to unzip it?
I have this really odd issue with my Z3 in that I cannot, on any network (wireless or carrier), resolve through DNS forum.xda-developers.com. I first noticed it because my XDA premium HD app couldn't connect to the forums at all. I did a bit of digging and managed to uncover that I can't connect to anything related to the forums. I CAN however connect to the main portal on www.xda-developers.com.
What I have tried:
1. Different wireless networks - no luck.
2. Other devices - all work fine on all the tried networks.
3. Carrier network (Rogers CA) - no luck, but again with other devices no problem
4. Ping and nslookup through Fing network tools - not able to resolve
5. Ping and nslookup through terminal emulator - not able to resolve
6. hosts file just has the standard localhost entry
7. Browse with Chrome just gives the standard error for unresolvable DNS
8. So far I have only seen this happen on the forums.xda-developers.com address.
I am running a Z3 (D6603) with a custom ROM per below.
Pre-rooted ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/d6603-5-0-2-flashable-stock-23-1-0-690-t3056361
D6603_23.4.A.0.546_Customized_US_SuperSU_XZDR2.8.2 1 thanx to @julianbl
It's an odd one for sure, so if anyone has any creative ideas for me to test out please let me know. Thanks in advance.
use titanium backup or something similar to disable/uninstall "PrototypeProtection".
It's an app that sony uses to block certain sites when the bootloader is unlocked.
Julián
Go in Root Explorer,
Mount in R/W
Go to: system/etc/hosts
Try to add a xdadevs rule,
examp:
#207.244.72.9 http://forum.xda-developers.com
then reboot your device just normal.
i hope it works,
- bram

I should note that I have not unlocked my bootloader. I tried this and it has unfortunately had no effect. Open to other suggestions though, thanks for trying.
[EDIT] I may have spoken too soon. I tried connecting after disabling (freezing) that app and didn't have any luck. I rebooted the phone, and things are back online. I will do some further testing to get concrete and repeatable behavior documented. Thanks @julianbl

Thank for the suggestion. As noted in my OP though, the hosts file is empty except for the default localhost entry.

Try to add a XDA Rule with a "#" before the rule instead?

Thanks for your desire to help - given what we've found out so far this isn't a HOSTS file issue. There is no entry in the hosts file, and as such any DNS resolution for the domain should leverage DNS servers based on DHCP settings.
In my mind, adding a rule in the HOSTS file to force resolution of the domain, might work but it's not a real fix as to why this is happening.
Refer to my previous note that the suggestion to block the "PrototypeProtection" app is what has resolved the issue so far.
Thanks again though @bramybram, appreciate your willingness to help.
Hey there, I had the same issue... It is quite frustrating, I guess it's some bug in the firmware you installed (since I used the same to flash my z3)... I resolved it by flashing another firmware, I suggest you the D6603_23.4.A.0.546_Customized_NCB_SuperSU_XDR2.8.2 1 (https://mega.co.nz/#!GJQVBL6K!x8bB2HS-TbpbZTb5IamrJB_xduDMHl9j6jQyAqrJpVQ) one, it worked for me
Hi everyone!
I have formatted the cell phone a few days ago, and resetted it to factory settings.
Going to the gym, which has free wifi, I tried to connect as usual, but I am no longer redirected to web page where you have to login (typing the provided password).
I tried to delete the gym related networks, to use another browser (Firefox), to clean the cache by Wipe...
ZERO results.
Any saviors to help me, and to make my Christmas time happier?
Thanks in advance.
No one?
i run into this sometimes, but usually going to 1.1.1.1 on the browser does the trick. maybe you can try?

Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate it!
So, using any browser (i.e. Chrome), you type 1.1.1.1 and the login page should appear? I'll try as soon as possible, and I'll let you know.

I tried the solution you suggested but, unfortunely, it haven't worked.
Should I try to install a different ROM to find out if the problem is still there?
If so, which ROM do you suggest to install?

The gym (and all others) will keep a record of your MAC address. To get the renewal page you will need to change your MAC address, followed by a reboot. Then it will appear.
Thank you for your reply.
How do I change my MAC address?
You will need a ROOTed device. It looks like there are no MAC spoofers that work any more without root. If you have root, you are in fine shape- download MacChanger app, run it. Reboot may be required.
