[Solved] Update branded phone using unbranded RUU + Goldcard - HTC Desire S

Hello,
I have a Desire S T-Mobile UK Branded phone. S-On and not rooted (further phone info at the bottom of this post).
I am wondering if it is possible (using a goldcard?) to manually update it using an unbranded RUU from this thread.
Also, if I was to update it using this method, would I have to keep the goldcard in the phone? And would I receive any future OTA stock updates from HTC?
If this is possible are there any risks involved or negative results? If so any preferred ways of updating the phone?
After much research I have been unable to find an explicit answer as to the results of doing the above for this phone. Having never performed anything like this before, I want to be certain before jumping in and being a new member I am unable to post in the perhaps more relevant development section/ threads.
Thank you in advance,
Mike

How did you obtain your CID?
I also have a branded D-S and would like to know if getting OTA updates is possible.

If you install the unbranded RUU using a goldcard, then you will get OTA notifications for the unbranded ROM and not your original TMOBILE ROM.

Yeah you can do what you are saying. Not sure if you'd get ota's though, maybe the unbranded ota updates wouldn't be pushed.
You only need to keep the goldcard in while installing the RUU. To be safe rather don't keep it in afterwards, keep it safe.
You can install it either by flashing the ROM.zip (I think) or by running the RUU .exe

Thanks for the replies, yes I understand that the RUU will essentially wipe the phone and install the new, unbranded version.
So as long as I use the goldcard then there is essentially no risk in the procedure? And I will be left with an unbranded version of the HTC/ Android software, without the additional apps from my network provider?

I got it using CID Getter which is a simple app available on the market, I am unable to link to it, being a new user.

Thanks, I found it.

I have successfully installed the unbranded RUU, -
RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822, from this thread.
Just incase any others in a similar position happen to find this thread -
I did it using a goldcard which was not very difficult to make, when following the various guides out there and then running the RUU executable file.
I have restored my applications offline, using Astro (which I installed from an apk), to prevent the market having to re-download them all at once and now with the market activated, they are all correctly recognised.
My phone is now totally unbranded and running software number 2.10.401.8.
This appears to have solved the delayed text messages, dropped calls and unreliable signal issues I was having with the T Mobile branded software. If only they would update the software themselves and remove this known bug, it would save a lot of people the time an effort of manually updating their phones in order to have them go back to being reliable!
The only thing that remains to be seen is if I will get OTA updates, as (AFAIK) the phone is currently running the very latest version available so there is no way to tell.
Thanks again to this community, which through its numerous guides and the answers on this thread, have made me once again - a very happy Desire S owner.

Command Error when changing CID

Hi folks,
I have unlocked and s-offd my Voda HTC Chacha.. installed a WWE Rom but havent recieved any OTA since then.. I am on 1.19 and there is a 1.54 OTA out..
just checked the CID through adb and its set to Super CID 11111111 instead of generic HTC__001. Tried changing it but I get Command Error. Any idea or solution for this?
Also, Is this the reason why no OTA are showing up?
If no, please advise how can I update the phone via OTA
Many thanks
What's your full version number? Afaik, 1.19 isn't a WWE ROM, it's Vodafone UK

Here are the full details mate:
Android 2.3.3
Software 1.19.206.2
Baseband 47.14.35.3030h_7.47.35.17
Kernel 2.6.35.10-g8db500e
cheers
Searching "1.19.206.2" on Google brings me back to a thread here in XDA's Chacha section saying it's an O2 ROM - so you see any O2 apps or bootanimations? I've heard that O2 don't actually "brand" their Android phones with apps, but still make all updates go through them.
EDIT: Yup, 1.19.206.1/2 is an O2-UK ROM - I found this out from this forum thread: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/7588766-post44.html
RUU_Chacha_O2_UK_1.19.206.1_Radio_47.14.35.3030H_7 .47.35.17_release_195486_signed.exe
RUU_Chacha_O2_UK_1.19.206.2_Radio_47.14.35.3030H_7 .47.35.17_release_197936_signed.exe
As you can see, your software number refers to 1 of 2 O2 UK RUUs
You should flash the 1.33.401.1 RUU from this thread, then see if you get an OTA update to 1.52.401.1 - if not, try downloading it from this thread and apply it via stock Recovery, which is reported to work if you're S-OFF and have a correct CID (HTC__001 for example) or SuperCID.

Fantastic mate, downloaded it as we speak..
not sure how it stayed on 1.19 as after I used XTC Clip, the logos and boot image were gone so I assumed I had a stock rom.. oh well.. everyday is a learning day..
I will let you know how I get on..
cheers for your help mate..
Update... Installed the 1.33 which then took the OTA update which is all good... However I still can't change the CID to HTC__001.. (currently set at 1111111)
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk
why you like to change the CID?
SUPER-CID (1111111) might have set during S-off thru xtc clip.... SUPER-CID (1111111) signifies you device is universal device, which enables to flash all languages/APN/other settings in your phone

True, but it forces non-qwerty keyboard users to manually modify the layout in /system/usr/
as described here , because CID is taken into account on default layout.
Once you know the trick, it's OK, but really annoying to do every time you install a new ROM

HTC Chacha ota update 2.3.5

Guys
Thought Id start a thread on the newest update I received this morning. Android version 2.3.5
So far I have noticed the following changes
- Time, carrier and date bigger and bolder on lockscreen
- New version of android market
- Bad Spelling underlined in text messages in red (but not auto changed)
- More transparent app and personalize buttons on homescreen
Changes I hope have been improved (but am testing)
- hoping the dialer draining battery issue is resolved (gonna take a day for me to monitor this
- stop cursor jumping to top of sms threads (intermittent for me so hard to be sure
There are probably some more system changes etc - but cant seem to find any official release document

What's your CID? My Chacha with CID VODAP001 running the same software doesn't see any updates due to the Vodafone CID it still has.
As other people, I didn't get the OTA at the moment. I really hope that SMS bug will be fixed !

When i use CID Getter from the Market i get the CID (ro.cid) O2___102 (o2 DE)
edit: ChaCha is unrooted and has s-on ... but i made a goldcard and installed RUU 1.33 over the o2-branded-system (OOTB Software 1.19.206.1 / Android 2.3.3)
When i get s-off/root and SuperCID 11111111 can i update the Software OTA from 1.33.401.1 to 1.54.401.2 or to i have to use CWM ?

That'll be why you can't see any OTAs from 1.33 - I believe you'd need any of HTC's generic CIDs (HTC__001 for the UK, for example) or SuperCID - I downloaded the OTA .zip and had a look at the updater-script, it checks for the following CIDs:
00000000, 11111111, 22222222, 33333333, 44444444, 55555555, 66666666, 77777777, 88888888, 99999999, HTC__001, HTC__E11, HTC__102, HTC__203, HTC__405, HTC__Y13, HTC__032, HTC__016, HTC__N34.
So for OTA updates from HTC Generic softwares, you'd need one of them CIDs - most people would recommend HTC__001 or 11111111 - I'd personally recommend 11111111 as it'll let you flash anything.

Yes, you would be able to OTA to 1.54.401.2 after you S-OFF/SuperCID, but you'll need to use the stock HTC recovery for it to apply. I've read that CWM Recovery errors out when trying to apply an OTA .zip
I got the notification, mine is UK version,
can I download and install OTA even if my chacha is rooted already?
cheers

thank you for this informations.
i am at Stock 1.33 EU (RUU) at the moment, so i understood, that i can just update the 1.54 via update.zip in the bootloader/recovery after s-off/supercid?
just a quickie - when i installed the update I lost no data at all - after the install and reboot my homescreen returned as it was before the update
Well, it's an update. Not a new rom It's supposed to keep your data
Anyways, for everyone out there using carrier custom roms (these also have special CIDs like O2_xx, VODA_XX and so on) you need to understand that after a rom is released by HTC, the carrier must then take the rom, apply it's bloatware and then release it for update. So that's why basically non-branded phones usually get OTA's way faster than the branded ones. This is generally available for any phone. Hope this clarifies things a bit.
I can confirm dialer issue still remains (i suspected this as it is a gingerbread issue)
Updated yesterday and performed a data reset. Memory management appears much better. Phone had over 100mb free on data reset.
Hi all,
I got a carrier-free Chacha at MediaMarkt (Spain), it's on software version 1.22.412.2 and has CID HTC__304, however when I check on updated it keeps saying it's up to date and no updates available.
The phone is, unfortunately, s-on. Could this be affecting me? Or maybe it's because of the CID? In Europe everyone is getting 1.54 but me? Sounds weird...
Thank you for your help.
Most of us have already S-OFF'ed their devices and we are using leaked versions. You'll have to wait for the official update to your phone. Or you can simply S-OFF and install a custom ROM if you want.
Thanks for the info. I wrote to HTC Spain Customers' Support and they told me to put my ohone date on next year for a couple of days and the 2.3.5 update should appear (either this way or in secure mode).
I'm waiting until tomorrow ans I'll let you know... Thanks!
hmm, i think you or them had confused two different things:
Android version: which now is 2.3.5
with
Software number: which i personally have 1.52
I think you told them you have 1.22 and they understood that you have Android version 1.22, instead of 2.3.5
Correct me if i'm wrong!

[Q] installing stock RUU

Hello forum, this is my first post. I'm no pro and this is my 2nd android. my uncle brought it from UK to Bangladesh. may be it was in contract with Vodafone because I see a Vodafone splash screen and some Vodafone apps in application manager. I don't like them as because I'm not using Vodafone here. now can anyone please give some links where I can find way to install fresh OS without Vodafone (may be you call it unbranded RUU). I prefer Indian RUU to get local font support. I'll be very glad if someone answers. my "Volume down+Power button"

If you're not worried about warranty, I would strongly recommend a custom ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601
Use this to help you, it contains many guides and ask any questions if you need to.
However, if you do want to flash a RUU, here are a list of RUU's. I can see one for HTC India there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506
Also I believe you would need to create a goldcard to flash an unbranded RUU for HTC India. Here is a good guide from Paul O Brien

about the 1st link:I'll install custom Rom after a few days because I'm still enjoying the shiny sense 3.0.
about the 2nd link:I've seen that sticky post but couldn't download Asia_India so I downloaded Asia_WWE. but the thing is what is the process. do I have to revolutionary s-off or root my phone? and most importantly will I get the official OTA updates after flashing the stock Rom? I'm more interested about flashing stock Rom. so if you please give the procedure.
about the 3rd link:I'll creat a goldcard ASAP.
With the goldcard use mmc2 not mmc1 as the guide suggested. I.e. change the 1 to a 2 in the adb command.
If you want to get ota's you have to be stock, if you attempted down the line to install an ota on a rooted/altered phone its your own stupidity to blame, and many have done it.
Good stuff on making the goldcard, can't stress it enough how important it can be especially for novices.

You don't need S-OFF or root to flash a RUU. However, it doesn't matter if you do either.
The RUU is an .exe file so run it on your computer and it becomes pretty self explanatory. Also thanks to fox2delta for clarifying that.

If you're using the RUU then you should get OTA's and you'll want to keep your bootloader locked.
You can also go down the custom ROM road but i'm not sure about functionality with indian font.

[Q] RUU to go back stock

I know there are several threads like this one but I prefer not to write another RUU request while you're answering to another user
So, I got a HTC One S S3 yesterday... I began to unlock it because I wanted to change its CID. I found that in the S3 version the CID can't be changed (still) when I had already installed the TWRP Recovery.
Now I'd like to go back to stock, but there is not a RUU compatible with my device: It has VODAP102 as CID, but the RUU for Vodafone AT here doesn't work. I found the kernel source for the same software version I have in htcdev.com, my question is: is it possible to build a RUU or at least a boot.img from it?
The sources can be found in htcdev /devcenter/downloads (sorry but being new I can't post direct links!), HTC One S as Device, Vodafone as Carrier and UK -
1.11.161.133 as software version. Actually I am in Italy, but the software and kernel version are exactly the same.
Thank you in advance.
Bump to first page and a little addendum:
I've read again all the possibilities I have with this phone, and if I have understood accurately then I'm forced to go back to stock, roms like the ThickDroid seem to require a non-branded CID, but that's the point... it is the CID that's compelling me to maintain this original Vodafone software, otherwise I would have already installed the HTC "basic" rom.
Am I missing something?
Thank you again!
Have you tried looking on HTCRUU.COM?
Check your radio id on the bootloader screen then flash the appropriate ROM

Yes I checked, but they have just unbranded RUUs, here in the forum there's one RUU for Vodafone but the region isn't the same as mine.
I've read that it is possible to flash an OTA update deleting the string that checks the CID - I'll have to take a look about that (moreover, it seems very difficult to find .zip OTA updates for this phone...).
Nevertheless I'd like to find this RUU update too - it is an important option too. So... bump to first page.

[Q] Dumb Questions...

Okay, So I'm fairly new to all this. I've made several (unsuccessful) attempts at rooting my AT&T HOX, but I finally think I know where I went wrong.
In the past, I had tried unlocking the bootloader without having SuperCID access. (So yes, I currently have s-on..) Mainly due to the fact that I didn't know I needed sim access to root.
Because of these past issues, I have done the ATT OTA update.. From what I have read in other posts, correct me if I'm wrong, there is currently no way to gain SuperCID with the 5.18 update..
Other than waiting, is there any way I could go about rooting my phone? Is it possible to reset to factory settings, and go back to Original software?
Please help. Would eventually love to get rid of all the ATT and HTC crap on my phone.. (can't stand sense 5..)

Because you've taken the latest at&t update there is no way at all to get SuperCID so you can unlock your bootloader. You'll have to wait and see whether a dev deems it worth his time to find a crack, but I wouldn't hold your breathe if I was you. Probably should have done your research before taking the update.

1. I'm not are of a root for this new firmware (as Timmaaa has stated).
2. I'm not sure why you chose to get the OTA update if you can't stand HTC and Sense. Any time you grab an update from A&T, you're risking not being able to root
3. I recommend you purchase a Google phone and root/mod it as much as you want. No more HTC, No More ATT, No more Sense.

Hey Dan,
Thanks for the reply. I got the OTA because I like new. I didn't really think about it when I did it, so yea, it was a dumb mistake on my part.
I only got HTC, because it was my introduction to Android. I now have a rooted N7, and I love it. I would also love to get an N5, however, it's a good chunk of money I don't have currently, which is why I will be rooting my HOX once a root is available.
So, is anyone aware of a way to roll back an OTA update? Or is my best bet waiting for a 5.18 exploit?
Like I said, there is absolutely no way for you to get root unless someone releases an exploit.

If such a thing were possible, than a new exploit would not be necessary, and we would have told you about it already.
You can't "rollback" or revert to previous Android versions unless already rooted, s-off, etc.
