What you'll need to do is download the Ace Hack Kit, but unfortunately it has been suspended due to mistreatment on the forums. So you'll have to find another method of downloading it, or I'll ask him if I can post it.
After having your phone rooted, you can THEN go into CWM and flash your custom ROM
U can download it from the Desire HD forum, its the same

No you can't. attn1 took it off of there too

attn1's post is #7
I think that's what triggered it in the first place.
It was nice while it lasted. OP - You'll need to find someone who has the latest hack kit uploaded somewhere else to share with you. Note: attn1 has taken down his IRC and will no longer be supporting his hack kit - so you're on your own except for the minor assistance the community might be able to provide

You mistakingly got thanked for that - lucky dog.
Read the "Effen Manual". From what I recall seeing in the hack kit thread the password should be in there. This was to ensure users were READING
Also, make sure you read the FAQ section in the "effin manual" since that will provide vital information regarding where the password is in the hack kit folder.
If you still need the most up to date hack kit PM me and I can provide it to you.
I just dont understand why the download was taken off. All he has to do is no longer support it and not respond to questions/answers that he may deem as unfit for the development section.
From what i read in the thread it appears there was just a simple misunderstanding as far as the use of the development forum rather than using the Q/A section along with a user questioning the possibility that the hack kit is not perfect.

This x1298540928756 (however it's his software and he can do with it as he pleases)
However it looks like JSL's procedure essentially does the same thing, but it's not in a "1 step" GUI like attn1's was. It's more closely resembles versions of the hack kit before attn1 started the GUI
Edit: I bet this (http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-hd/) irked him too. A) no credit to attn1 in this article B) Let's be honest, how many times have we seen attn1 tell people to stop watching videos and read the effen manual?

I hate that XDA has become a spoonfeed me or I'll throw a fit type community.
People need to appreciate what's been done for them and STFU.
i need LOTS of help!
First i hate that people are so mean and inconsiderate of those trying to help...I am a total noob. I attempted a week ago to root my HTC Aria, and i did it BUT as soon as i did i guess i downloaded the latest HTC software that i am finding is IMPOSSIBLE to root, no matter how many different methods i try! in the cmd prompt and the adb devices part it never works...SO i am thinking of attempting rooting my HTC Inspire 4G with the 2.3.3 software and i am scared because i cant seem to find a good root for dummies...i get sent to outdated or no longer in used links and i am so frustrated...It shouldnt be that hard..can someone please help!

XDA = development site, not hold my hand I'm a noob help me site. It's because of complaining like this that got the development for the hack kit and attn1 to stop in the first place. If you think rooting this phone is impossible, then stop now before you destroy your phone. The link to do it the old fashion way was posted above, please read it, learn it and apply it if rooting still seems like something you wanna do. Educating yourself before you destroy your phone shouldn't be that hard or that much to ask. I can't wait to see the butt hurt response from this...more and more the Inspire forums are being overrun with these type of threads...I understand why attn1 got fed up.

Yes, attn1's hack kit was the 'easiest' method available. Hopefully, if he can get some assistance with supporting it, he'll re-release it (follow thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377119&page=3) In the mean time, you can go here (http://driphter.com/index.php?topic=3867.0) and follow the process described (which has been suggested multiple times in this thread). This is essentially the way attn1's hack kit started, before he started making it idiot proof (not calling anyone names, that's just how it is). Many, many users were able to successfully root/s-off using attn1's 'long' method before he started developing his GUI, but if this seems too over-the-top for you then maybe you should rethink the idea of rooting. Hopefully attn1 will re-release his easy to use hack kit, but with the frustration he's dealing with having to put up with users who want to be spoon fed this information is understandable, and I don't blame him in the least bit for pulling it - whether temporary or permanent
IMHO - there should be no 'root method for dummies'. You're messing with integral parts of the system when you're doing this and there is potential to permanently damage your phone. If you don't want to learn what the process is actually accomplishing, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. Is there a specific reason you want root/s-off?

This has been covered, there is no need to provide anymore links or reiterate what has been said in this thread numerous times or in any of these "OMGZ WHERE DID THE HACK KIT GOOO HELPP MEEE" threads. If users want to educate themselves its out there waiting for them to read it. If they don't that's on them. I'm personally happy that ATTN1 took it down, I have no idea how he put up with it for this long.

trying to root my htc sprint hero 1.5 help
Hey man everyone started from the same spot your in. People on here are SUPER helpful, but easily get annoyed by people asking the same questions and not posting them in the right section. USE SEARCH! its your best friend, every question has been asked over 3 times. My advice, read everything on rooting (terminology, dangers, benefits, which type of root fits your needs, which ROM you want to flash) after a week or so on researching, find an RUU file in a thread. Then load that on your phone and follow the command prompt instructions carefully. Remember to use search, and rooting can brick, break, your phone. But the benefits of rooting are well worth It.

Hey dude, I'd recommend using this link right here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
It tells how to get your phone to the stock 2.1 and then how to root that.
If you read down through the first 2 or 3 posts, all the instructions are there and it's really hard to mess them up if you follow exactly what is typed.
You don't even HAVE to upgrade to 2.1, but I'd recommend doing it first.
If you don't want to mess with the link I included above, you can just root it from 1.5 like it is now using some of the one-click methods out there on the forum. If you go to the Development section of this HTC Hero forum and look around for any threads with ROOT in the title, you should be able to find anything you need.
Also check out the Take Control link down in my signature below -- it has a lot of helpful posts and info too.

the new user guide (that i wrote) teaches about stickies! and where to find them!
find the stickies in the captivate general, q&a and dev forums they have all the answers you are looking for and way more.
go. read. learn.
this is really basic stuff. At&t does not like you installing apps not from the market "its called side loading" you need to be rooted to fix it and there are pleanty of guides "one click root has an option to enable non market apps" to get a different rom go to the dev sectoin chose a rom and follow the simple directions or for a guide for the entire process http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Assuming what you meant was that you want ATT's crap taken off and a new ROM...
Why would you not want your device rooted? If voiding your warranty is a concern it's fine, there are plenty of methods to return back to stock Eclair/Froyo. And there really isn't a ROM out there that's head and shoulders over the rest, you're going to have to play around and see which one you like the feel of the best. Try out a different ROM every couple of days and see how you like it.

If you are asking someone to help you build a rom well... I don't think that will happen. You can go to samfirmwares.com and download a stock i9000 rom, but without root you, and if you don't know how to build to incorporate the home button and haptic feedback fixes, your phone won't work right. My suggestion is to go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948790
They are all stock i9000 roms with only busybox and root installed. I'm using the stock jvh on my captivate, at the moment, and it works great. You will have to deal with root. It's better to be rooted anyway.

Only replying to that small part of your post, and correcting you by saying no, you don't need to be rooted to sideload applications. SWM (Sideload Wonder Machine) can do it so long as you have the drivers installed and USB Debugging on. I installed several applications as soon as I got the phone, long before I ever rooted my phone, much less installed a custom ROM on it.

Why didn't you use google? There are plenty of places that explain how to root that aren't on this site, which is more an "advanced" place anyways(I use that term loosely, but I get the idea that people here assume you know a little about your phone).
Check out MobileTechVideos, the guy who does those had a three-part, in-depth ROM flash set of videos that explain exactly how to use One-Click to Root.
Edit:

Ok first all i would like to say, i'm a new member, so don't get frustrtated if i ask questions which might sound like a pretty simple thing for experienced users, because you must remember when you first started it was difficult for you as well.
Basically i need to know if it is possible to 'root' the Desire S - Yes i am new to 'rooting' and everything, but i am getting myself familar with the terminology so hopefully will know a lot more soon. The reason i ask this is because, even on other sites, i can only find rooting guides for the original Desire but not the Desire S. I do understand this could be because this is a new phone, but would just like someone here to confirm that.
Also, if i do manage to 'root' the Desire S, would anyone recommend a ROM to put on it, and lead me to a guide which will help me in completing that task. Please note, from what i know, it would be good if it is a stable mod as i would like all features like wi-fi to still work. Thanks for your time, hope to hear from someone soon.
Kind Regards: Droidzz
seriously, even if you are new
use the search function
the half desire s forum is already full of "can i root" "how to root" "root" "rooooot?" threads ....
Before worrying about rooting you need to make sure that your device is S-OFF or S-ON. Search XDA to get instructions on how to do that.
IF you are very lucky and your device is S-OFF you'll can gain root access using either Gingerbreak or SuperOneClick root methods. (Again search XDA)
If you're like most people and stuck with a S-ON device you'll need to use an XTC Clip or wait for AlphaRev to S-OFF your device.
As the last guy said - read around on XDA. Plenty of people have asked the same questions before....
Hope that helps...
Thanks, for that buddy - Yes i have already searched the forum, and the internet, so i'm aware on how to 'root' the phone using the superoneclick method, however don't understand what's all this about the S-ON S-OFF anyone care to elaborate?

Here's a thread I wrote a while back in which you'll find some answers.......
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076937
With attn1 taking down the ACE Hack kit, are there any reliable, yet not overly difficult, ways to root the Inspire? I would like to know I can actually root this device before I buy one.
Yeah I am wondering the same thing myself.
I asked attn1 a while ago on Twitter, and he said he'll still develop the AHK
It's completely torn down. No more downloads available. Maybe someone else will pick it up and he will develop in the background so he doesn't have to deal with the inept anymore.
attn1 plans on putting it back out under a few conditions. Follow this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1377119) thread. Post 10 has an alternative hack kit that should work

I love my Inspire but I want to get rid of bloatware and block ads. Easy right? Just root it. Well, every thread I've found has out of date links or says they are not for 2.3 or higher.
All the links to Bubby's one click either say 'nothing to see here' or that they only work for something prior to 2.3.
Other than one link for the Revolution rom with over 750 pages I have read every page and every link referring to rooting and installing a new rom.
Could someone please post a guide with current links? Or just updated links for the old guides if they still work with the new tools?
Thanks for any help guys!

The only working tool for your device is the Advanced Ace Hack Kit, wich is no longer supported here. Follow my signature and you will find the way...

I may sound like a layman, but there used to be a thread in android development subforum under HTC Inspire that offered ACE hack kit, a program that would root your phone and install an advanced "recovery" system in your phone. Among others, this one is by far the easiest and effortless way of rooting the phone. Once the hack kit is installed, you can effortlessly install any ROM that has been tested by many on HTC Inspire, such as these from the link http://theunlockr.com/category/roms-2/android-roms-2/htc-inspire-4g-roms/
However, like another poster pointed out, the dev that offered us the Advanced ACE hack kit (AAHK) is no longer with XDA. May be he has his own website where he offers it for free. This used to be where it was offered.
Ah, the post above, somewhere masked in the sig is a way to get AAHK.
Your signature led to another and then....

I finally found it! There were a few more new websites that still contained bad links. But a few more searches and a read through another 'I can't find it' thread finally got me to a good link.
Thank you again for the good-naturedness of your reply It seems things have gotten very testy in the last 6 months or so. There are obviously a lot of people who are, um, genuinely challenged when it comes to, um, thinking. Based on spelling it seems that the issue (being stupid) is genuine and yelling at them isn't going to help.
So again - THANK YOU! It really did take a specific search to find the link and it took three searches to find the right specific search. You started me on the path to the right search.
Link found on attn1's twitter.
I for sure will donate to him. Hopefully I won't have to bother him with any kickban questions lol.
Well, I just rooted my inspire 4g yesterday and used the method from here:http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Ace:_Rooting_&_CyanogenMod it went smoothly and completed successfully and I flashed the custom rom already.
I tried to follow other hack tools but all them wanted to uninstall htc sync and relative drivers from the computer which is a pain
