Power Control widget.
Did you try the Power Control widget?
That's what I use, you can activate the 2G/3G switch and it let's you choose the available options. For instance, you can set it up to 2G or 3G and that will allow you to enable/disable the 4G... Or you can switch between 2G, 2G/3G and 3G. It's all configurable.
Whenever it says 3G on this widget, just read 4G...
Works like a charm for me. I'm using the EaglesBlood ROM (CM7 based).

4g is the same radio as 3g on T-Mobile, so if you're looking for a way to turn off 4g and leave 3g on it can't be done. 4g uses no more battery than 3g.
You can set it to 2g only though. Either on cm7 with the tips the others suggested or with Toggle2g which I've included in Tsugi.

Evdo on Evo great battery life

I was out of town this weekend where 3g wasn't available and noticed great battery life under evdo coverage. Is there a mod yet that will let u switch from 3g to 2g coverage?

Android 1.6 added Google's own power icon strip - set it up by long-pressing and installing the 'Power Control' widget on your Home screen.
Galaxy S have that option under Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Mobile Networks -> Use only 2G Networks.
Or unless you use a 3rd party widget that will allow you to switch from 2G to 3G (vice versa) on one press of a button.
Well on the evo it doesn't give u that option. I was hoping someone will make a hack or something for it.

Switch pro allows it. Though not sure, if it works on Evo.
Umm, evdo IS 3G

NOTE: No service with WCDMA only

If you have wcdma only selected and the area that you are in is not 4g you will not have service.

It would be nice to be able to set the 4g to 2g threshold settings. At my work if I forget to manually switch to 2g, my phone stays on 4g (it still finds a weak signal so it doesn't switch to 2g) and I miss all calls, emails, sms....
Just to confirm, there is no way to tell the g2x when it should switch from 4g to 2g right?

There are apps like Tasker that allow you to set things depending on your GPS location or times of the day. I don't know if it specifically lets you set when your phone goes from 2G/4G but I think it does.

Right I was thinking about that. What I ment was switch from 4g to 2g based on signal strength. I'm sure there is some kind of a limit in place to know when to make the switch. It would be nice to be able to modify this.

Not sure about a way to manually set the thresholds but there is one setting you can change that's supposed to require a stronger WCDMA signal before it switches from 2G. On your dialer, dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to Phone Information. Scroll down to "Set preferred network type" and select "WCDMA and GSM Auto" with the stock rom. I think with CM its called something like GSM Auto PRL.
The difference from WCDMA is that Auto requires a higher signal strength threshold to use switch to 4G. Not sure what those thresholds are and I haven't noticed much difference but I have pretty good signal everywhere I go.
It.wouldn't hurt to try it though.

How do you actually save that setting?
Oh and a better shortcut to that menu is download anycut from the market, add shortcut to desktop using that program and tap activity then look for testing.

The setting should stick until you change it again. Is it changing automatically on yours?
I changed the settings a few times when I close the setting it always saves the setting I picked.
Is it supposed to save these setting after a reboot or when turn the phone off.
I noticed while on WI-FI it's always on GSM

Does anyone else lose 4g a lot?

I've tried WCDMA Preferred and GSM Auto (PRL) but I am constantly losing 4G switching back and forth in areas I have never had a problem.
Download the app called 'Network' in the Android market and set it to WCDMA only.
That isn't a solution but why wouldn't I just set it in the testing mode? Why download another app?
I lose 4g often too....and I go down to 2g....what happened to 3g? My old prepaid Cricket phone had a consistent 3g signal all over Tucson, while the 4g is really fast, it isn't reliable, and almost (almost) makes me wanna go back on cricket.
this radio is garbage.
my g2 was piss poor with 4g and this one is even worse.
I can watch it sit on the table and go from full bars of 4g to 2 bars of 2g/edge and STAY there.
sorry for the uninformed question, but is this something that can be fixed in a new rom, or mod?
I added data tweaks to my roms. I don't have any issues.

It's not the radio. It's more likely the 4G signal in your area. I am in Atlanta and I have full bar 4G almost everywhere I go. At home it will drop down to 2G but I have wifi there.
As for 3G, this is a 4G radio. We're you joking about the 3G expectations?

Point #1 - You are incorrect. I am saturated with T-Mos "fake" 4G coverage and have never had a phone drop it like this one does.
Point #2 - What are you asking the other posted about 3G expectations. This phone doesn't have a 4G radio. T-Mo doesn't have 4G. They have 3G that they market as 4G.

Everyone has "fake" 4G coverage. LTE isn't technically classified as "4G" either, the specification calls for rates of at least 100/mbps. T-Mobile currently has faster and more widespread pre-4G coverage than any other carrier, and the phone does have a pre-4G radio. The phone does support HSDPA at rates up to 21Mbps, and does is in fact have a pre-4G radio. And as far as my other comment not being a solution, have you tried it before bashing it? I've had plenty of luck with that solution personally and I figured it would be kind of me to share, but I suppose I stand corrected.

Yes. Thanks to your roms, I have signal in places I never had before (like the bathroom at work. I can now surf while doing my "business" and important "paper work" in my "office", ya know.?
while i poop.
What are data tweaks?
I have noticed like the iPhone 4 that if you touch that metal peice on the back around the camera the signal drops. I got a case that covers that up and that fixed all my 4g signal problems. My phone stays on 4g most of the time where I am. The T-Mobile network where I live works very well though.

have all HSDPA towers been upgraded to HSDPA+?
Or does the phone just recognize all HSDPA as '4G'?

It recognizes all HSDPA as '4G', I have full signal in certain areas with a '4G' icon but get speeds around 1Mbps and when I check the actual signal with third-party apps it is registered as HSDPA.

Which ICS ROM has 4G tether?

I have used a few lol haven't found one with 4g that allows me to tether 4g. It just disconnects the 4g and don't tether crap. Might make switch to GB again please help!
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Using a rom's built in tethering is so annoying. Especially for crack flashers. The method below is much much better for those that change roms frequently.
Ze program:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Ze instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516275&highlight=android-wifi-tether
Downside:
Can't use the rom's built 4G toggle (if it even has one) in the notification bar.
Upside:
Your backup program (e.g. Titanium Backup) will back up the settings so that you don't have to re-set up tethering each time you change roms.
Has a nice widget.
Works with 3G and 4G.
That's what I use but once I fire it up on 4G, the 4G goes away and my data disconnects. This happens on ICS Roms. Had no problem on GB

Nexus S 4g, stock 4.0.4, Bluetooth 4G tether
Oddly, my stock 4.0.4 Nexus S 4G is working with the bluetooth tether on 4G with my iPad 3. I'm using the built-in "Tethering & portable hotspot" app and I don't have the hotspot plan. Does anyone else have this working? I'll have to see if charges appear on my next bill....

does h/h+ drain battery more so than 4g lte?

It seems when I'm in a different area and I get h/h+/3g that my battery drains more than when I'm at home using 4g? Why is that? Or am I just crazy...
It's probably because when you're out and about the phone is searching for a signal. That uses a lot of juice.

+1, when the phone is not on 4G (LTE) it is constantly looking for 4G, if you are able to change your radio mode to WCDMA via the CM settings (if you are on CM10) theoretically, it should not continue to search for 4G. I don't have the experience to see that this is the case (battery savings)
Oh so the culprit is searching not the signal itself! Ah well thanks guys! I appreciate it!
I've been trying these steps from another post but it won't work with slim bean

That depends on the radio. ATT radios are RAT locked so that doesn't work. Also USSD codes don't seem to work on AOSP based ROMs.
Thanks to csschmit I spelled it wrong but can't find the post.
I do the toggle from Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode and change it to GSM/WCDMA and it will force HSPA.
If that doesn't stick, and immediately switches back to LTE, click Network Operators and it may take a long time for the search to complete, if it completes and you don't see AT&T try again over and over until it does. Once you finally see AT&T, click it and it will say "Registered on Network" and the toggle will now work. Even the "use 2g to save battery" will work.
It takes a long time for me to get AT&T to show but you only have to do it once per reboot provided you don't toggle Airplane mode.

2g is only edge, you will not get higher speeds when it is checked, and supposedly has the best power savings, you can always have data off until needed which would be the best battery saver
