Oh yes. Get as prepared as you can.

Unrooting

I havent had my phone unrooted and locked for a while now I want to unlock and rooted again but I know when you unlock it wipes your phone is there anyway to unlock it with out your data being wiped?

After searching around, it seems possible to root without unlocking the bootloader so you won't lose any data.
Here's the guide and another one.
Do note that those guides are written during gingerbread time, might not work in ics. besides, I haven't tested them myself, so do it at your own risk.
But I would still recommend you to make titanium backup after you gain root, unlock bootloader, and restore. This is in case you want to flash custom rom.
Thanks i didn't know I can root without unlocking the boot loader.

You can root without unlocking up until 4.0.3. Out of luck beyond this.
I think I'm screwed cause I have 4.0.4 and I cant a guide for rooting. fml

Just unlock the bootloader. They are just saved games. The apps are all there in Play, so just reinstall what you want.

As of the time of posting there is no public way to root 4.0.4 without unlocking on the Nexus S.

Search for one click root, that will take all the steps for you, including custom recovery.

Why would anyone have any use for it over here? It doesn't do anything we can't already do.
Plus, Safestrap is extremely device-specific.
Really I'm not sure if I. Want to unlock bootloader as of yet. And coming from the og photon with locked boot loader I have no experience with any other recovery method.
Could i unlock after rooting by the exploit method.

Unlocking helps you to root, so you cant unlock AFTER rooting. You also need to be rooted to flash custom recoveries

Ohh well in that case, no, just unlock the bootloader directly
My mistake, its just that the only root methods for the Photon that I've seen so far unlock your bootloader at the same time
So just ignore what I said and unlock directly

Save data and root

Is there a way to root but don't lose any on the phone? I got to much apps and stuff.

Unlocking your bootloader is what deletes everything. And no, if you're not unlocked, there's no way around it. Just back up everything to a PC beforehand.

Rooting won't erase anything, however unlocking the bootloader, if you have't already will wipe all of your data.

You can't root without first unlocking the bootloader. If you don't know that maybe you shouldn't be messing around with your phone, at least not until you've done all your homework.

[Q] Is S-OFF required for custom recoveries/ROMs?

I just got my device today and rooted with WeakSauce. As expected, firewater failed. I am wonder if I need to have S-OFF in order to flash TWRP and/or some custom ROMs. If I don't need it, I'd rather save the $25 that I'd have to spend on SunShine.

How do you install a recovery with weakauce root only? That would be new to me
Edit. You either need s-off or s-on with unlocked bootloader. An you need s-off on HTC VZW m8 to unlock bootloader ..

Thanks for clearing that up. Been a while for me. Just got my M8 and last time I had to root was on my DNA when VZ still let us unlock the bootloader.

No problem...if you can't get firewater to work yourself. I would gladly pay sunshine.
