[Q] Necessary to upgrade HBOOT? - HTC Desire S

My Desire is unbranded (not by me), so I don't get the OTA upgrades. I currently have 1.47.401.4 stick rom with sense 2.1 I would like to try a custom ROM to obtain sense 3.x. I prefer something close to the HTC stock rom.
I found some interesting ROMS in the dev forum, however most threads about roms do not mention if the new HBOOT is required or if the old HBOOT will also work. I currently have HBOOT 0.98.2000 (ENG).

No

Does upgrading to the new hboot makes any sense at all? According to their signatures many people in this forum have upgrade to their hboot. What's the advantage?

There is no advantage , in fact disadvantages.....
So don't bother upgrading yet.

I don't think it will ever be really required. Unless HTC decided to really put Sense on a Mc'Donalds diet of Tripple-Double-Quater Pounders ;-).
Could go either way though, the phone very rarely hits the 300mb cache quota, so I guess it could go either way.

Thanks for the replies. I am more confident now to try a custom rom on my DS.

[Q] Several Question about wording like (RUU; WWE...)

Hi,
I have read many threads and posts but I still have some problems with the wording (meaning) of some words.
What does "RUU" stands for?
What does "WWE" stands for?
And I also have some general questions:
Is it usefull to upgrade to the latest radio? If yes, why? If no, why?
Is it usefull to upgrade to the latest Hboot? If yes, why? If no, why?
Thanks guys!

1. RUU = ROM Update Utility. This is an official HTC ROM released as a self-extracting executable file that will install an official signed ROM to an HTC device for which it was intended.
2. WWE = World-wide English. This usually is used to label an official HTC unbranded ROM that can be used to debrand a carrier-based HTC Device.
Radio upgrades: If you are experiencing calling issues, reception problems, data problems etc., then it is usually beneficial to upgrade the radio. If you aren't experiencing issues, then why try to 'fix' something that isn't broken?
HBOOT upgrades: Not really necessary IMHO, especially since most of the new HTC HBOOTs are now the "LOCKED" version and you have to register with HTC to "UNLOCK" it.
As far as I know WWE stands for World Wrestling Entertainment.
It had to be said.
I had some threads around (you can look through the forum and read them) but the general conclusion at this point is that there is no need of hboot 2.00.2002 except using it with a modded Stock HTC ROM (it is the only ROM around that benefits from the new partitioning scheme with a separate lib)

[Q] Is there a safe way to downgrade from 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 to 2.3.3 and sense 2.1

I upgraded to 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 (officialy, no rooting or anything else), but the phone is much less responsive, much hotter etc.
I'd really like to go back to official 2.3.3 and htc sense 2.0?
I'm a noob, so I need help.
Is it possible?
THanx guys.

[Q] May I ask for an advice?!

Hi all, guys!
First of all I want to say thanks to all who get this great forum updated with ROMs, guides and tutorials! I've read all of the most interesting threads and I'm ready to put my hands on my Desire S I'm waiting!
I need only a little advice. The Desire S I'm waiting is branded by my national operator. No SIM lock or other, only some personalizations.
I think I'll debrand it at light speed, flashing an official ROM and then proceed to unlock it / root it.
And here I need ur advice: do you think it's better to flash an old official ROM to unlock and S-OFF with Revolutionary, or to flash the latest and unlock with the HTC tool?! What are the benefits to have S-Off / Unlock VS S-On / Unlock?
Thank you in advance!

If you unlock with HTCDev HTC may notice what you did to your phone. So there is a bigger chance of voiding your warranty.
Also if you s-off you will have much more possibilities for customizing your phone. And everything you do will be much more easy (flashing ROM, changing radio, kernel etc.)
So I would really recommend you not to use htcdev but to s-off your phone by yourself

Ditto.
But if this is the first time you're doing all this, i suggest a few days worth of reading about RUUs, CID, Goldcard, Misc_version, etc, before you contemplate changing branded phone firmware. You may not need it, but knowing this stuff is like having a condom - It's better to have one and not need it, rather that need one and not have it!
Thank u for replies!!!

LOOOL, u're definitively right (about condoms first!!!) !!!
As I said in my post I've read hundreds of posts and tutorials about goldcard and debranding, warranty, S-OFF and many others stuff.
I've downloaded the possible and the unpossible about Desire S!!! And I haven't the phone yet!!! LOOOOOL
Make sure you read the sticky thread in development section. It really helped me a lot when i started. As for roms to enjoy your mobile phone since its new i would suggest not to go to ics yet since some stuff are not functional. Go for 2.3.7 roms mostly. Welcome to Android side and hf.

Thank you nikolaaas.
I know ICS for Saga is not fully functional (yet?! ;D ;D) and a little buggy.
Hope developers may find better solutions when ICS will be official for Saga!
In my case I'd like first of all to debrand my phone and then try some custom ROM (I've read great things about MIUI or Runnymede based ROMS).
By the way I'm not really new in Android experience. As you can see in my signature, thank to great people, I use Android 2.3 in my reallllllly old Polaris since 2 years (with some problems, obviously, but nothing really bad!)! I think that these are the things that make great Android and this group of developers!!!!
Thanks!!!

Flash radio?

I just did the downgrade from 2.00 to 0.98 and S-off
Now I have to flash a new rom (I would try ics)
I have to update the radio?
Now is the old version(20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11)
if I flash it, should I first flash the rom or radio?
which can I use, from ota or from ruu?
sorry for english

No, you don't need a new radio for ICS - this is not samsung. As a general rule, don't play with the radio unless absolutely necessary.
It's risky business, and the benefit is not worth the potential hazard.
Cheers
EDIT : As a general piece of friendly advice, I would suggest you flash stable GB ROMs and play around for a bit before jumping into the world of beta ICS ROMs. Get a feel of the stable stuff before you spoil your flashing experience with random reboots and system freezes at the onset.

which country do you llve?...and on which network?
I'd recommend the radio that I'm on (see my signature)
But to back up what has just been said, don't bother changing radios unless you experience issues.
thanks for advice
p.s.: I'm from Italy, H3G network

The reason why I asked is so that you can get a local user from the same location hopefully on the same network to recommend you a radio rather than someone on the other side of the planet

i would also higly recommend flashing the 2.00.2002 ENG HBOOT here.
it helps with the post sense 3.0 ROMS as they need the new partition table created by this HBOOT

If he's already s-off on hboot 0.98.xxxxx, won't flashing the eng hboot 2.00.2002 return the device to *locked*?

I disagree I'd flash the ENG 98.2 hboot instead.....as that works fine....unless you intend to flash a stock sense 3.0 rom all of the customs work on either.
I know that I'm on the later one, but I can't be bothered to downgrade

Hello as it happens I believe that I've already come across your question and commented on it.
You shouldn't really go off-topic in someone elses thread like you just did, you could always use PM to identify your thread to me, or wait until your thread is answered.

Hello, Sensation XE (S-ON) Question

Hi, I've been browsing through XDA for a long time now only now have I created an account
since most of my questions are being ask by others, likewise, answered by others.
I would just like to personally ask (Questions bugging me for some time now)
My HBOOT is 1.29, can I use JB method for S-OFF? Is the wire trick really safe?
I'm running on ARHD 6.7.1 with 3.33.401 firmware but with a 11.69A radio, since I cannot yet update my firmware should I revert back to 6.6.X?

Hi
Check my signature (A great starting point etc) for a variety of methods to s-off
Take a particular look at ganesh and kgs
You do not need to change ROMS to do it.
