My advice to you is to read the Captivate Android Development forum, check out which ones seem to have the best support, and go with that. This is a do it yourself thing, selecting a ROM, research it and you'll find what suits you.

[Q] Best "Everyday Work" Rom

My employer just purchased an AT&T Captivate and loves it. He has already loaded it with apps and I flashed the overclock kernal (1.2) to it to make it a little bit snappier. He uses his phone and Galaxy Tablet for work and is interested in trying out a rom because he isn't too happy about the interface. I have the Droid X and that is the entire reason that he wanted a Droid phone. Anyway, he is addicted now and I am not too sure about the Captivate and don't want to make a mistake for obvious reasons, but would like to "hook him up" with a good rom. Any suggestions? I would like to put it on using Clockwork Mod, he just purchased it 2 days ago off of the market and I would like for him to see that he can actually use it. Oh, the phone is at 2.1, rooted with z4root and the 1.2 kernal.
He also has a friend that claims to have a Captivate overclocked to a stable 1.4? I have done A LOT of reading and short of trying something out on the phone, I am as ready as I can be! I have made a nandroid backup of the phone!
Thanks for any expert help out there!
You will come to find out that these threads get locked all the time because what might be good for one phone is not for another. Unfortunately I could suggest say Cognition because it works great on my phone, but his phone might not be stable. Same if I said to use Doc's rom. It really depends on if he wants to stay on a Captivate rom vs. an I9000 rom. Each has pros and cons and the best way to chose is read about each rom available and just test.

With my old Captivate I always had issues when trying to use i9000 ROMs (batch 1007). So I always stayed with Captivate based ROMs.

Yeah that was kind of what I was getting at with my explanation. Thanks for stating that because I personally have not had any issues, but I know people do with certain Rom's. That is why these which is best threads really are not good for knowing what is best on each phone.
Thanks for the replies! I will try it out tomorrow. Do you know if there is a custom kernal that is overclocked past 1.2?

Seitron has a kernel that people have run to 1.4 and I assume it is stable.
in my experience the stock rom is best if you want minimal bugs
not very glamorous or fast, however

Setirons kernel goes up to 1.6 actually but there are not many captivates out there that can handle even the 1.4. Mine is only able to run 1.3 stable. Trial and error. Also you have to remember the captivates battery life is not the greatest stock so add an oc'ed kernel and battery is gonna drain faster.

I think you will find quite a few people who agree with me here. Every custom rom I have tried has bugs that stock doesn't have. And I hate that the answer to that is to flash the new version of the rom every week. Stuff like media volume, battery life and these so called GPS "fixes"
Stock + root + lagfix - bloatware = best combination for reliability and full functionality IMO
I will continue to try custom roms, maybe this will change in the future

What Rom did you download? It depends on if it has a Voodoo lag fix, which you would have heard the voice or if it is a lag fix you need to enable. Go into Recovery and see if there are any additional menus like CWM and Lagfix or something like that.
on my 1007 batch captivate i find non oc'ed i9000 roms work the best

I do agree with you. Until we get a 2.2 rom based off a CAPTIVATE NON-BETA 2.2 Build, I am sticking with 2.1. Maybe a ROM based off Armani would work OK, but so far all the ROMs based off i9000 or Captivate 2.2 betas leave me wanting.
I use one for a while and find some little irritations that i just can't stand -so i go back to 2.1.
I know the Devs are trying, but we need 2.2 source for captivate to really have some rock solid roms. Samsung still says it is on its way, so I will still patiently wait - i have other toys to play with too.
Thanks to all. After bricking it twice, once requiring one click odin I finally got it. Funny thing is the rom didn't get me, it was the theme posted right under, it was a sic apple! Anyway thanks to the great people who take the time to write the tutorials and take their time to help a complete stranger. I can only continue to learn so that I can repay the favor by helping others. Thanks again!!

Which ICS ROM for my mother's Daily Driver?

Alright so my mother has the G2x. I decided to messed around with it the other day and discovered that the stock GB ROM is a train wreck. I mean it's slow, laggy, buggy and quite frankly I'm not sure it does this phone justice considering the specs on it. She agreed to let me upgrade her phone to ICS after seeing how good my MT4GS was with it. But I'm looking for the most stable version of this for her phone. She's not a big game player, and she really only uses the GPS, camera, email, and facebook. Plus a couple of cross-training apps which I'm sure will port over fine.
That being said, which ROM can you guys recommend to me? Should I keep the stock GB, root to a GB ROM (if so, which one is best suited for her needs), or should I make the leap to ICS (if so which rom)? Thanks in advance!
Maybe you should check out one of the 500 threads abt this very topic.

I have read some pretty good things about the AOKP Builds on other forums, not to mention having had some solid experiences myself with their stuff. Anything you found tricky or otherwise potentially annoying?
Thanks for the tip, regardless!
You need to keep in mind these things before getting an ICS rom. As of now, none of the ICS rom has proper video recording working. You can only record low resolution video with videocam illusion. Video playback on netflix also does not work. If you don't mind these things, ICS roms are pretty stable. IMO, AOKP and Owain's ICS ROMs are pretty good. If you want stable and fast GB roms, try hellfire phoenix 2.1. They are all in dev thread.

What criteria? There's no reason why GPS, Facebook, Camera and Email wouldn't be working on any ROM. Perhaps the best thing to do is head over to the development section and clicking on any rom; read the list of features and you'll know what works and what doesn't work. Pretty much any ROM that isn't experimental is stable.
Now if you want my opinion on it, I'd suggest you to go with Hellfire for both GB and ICS.

ICS:

Given the quantity of ROMs, it'd be a lot easier to just get some opinions from a few people rather than scroll through 1,000 posts to find out which one is the most stable for her needs. The criteria stands, as I did not know that video recording didn't work. And considering that plenty of ROMs don't have stable MMS, wonky GPS, etc, they're relevant to ask.
I appreciate your opinion and input, thanks for it. But I didn't really need a lecture on how to look things up. If this thread causes you that much trouble, then just ignore it and I'm sure your day will be fine. Chances are good it won't affect you in any way. There are likely other people who have no problem giving their opinions on the topic.

Agreed. Not that I don't use ICS, and not that I don't have ICS on my wife's phone, but if I were to put a rom on someone's phone that I don't have 24hr access to for updates, etc., it would be GB.
Well that's just how it is sometimes. You gotta actually work to find the answer to something.
It's nice we have such generous members like mt3g, MWBehr, dw9906 and zechizen, however, who are more than willing to give their input.
P.S. There's a search button to keep you from having to scroll through 1000's of posts. Ridiculous how you don't know that video recording doesn't work on ICS since there's a new post every few hours talking about LG and Nvidia not giving out drivers for the G2x.
Ya especially, if you aren't around to help out if something does go wrong. And artisan (I think is his name) is right there are two main threads that are just a couple scrolls down in GA section and Q&A that address which roms are being ran and one that address most stable.
p.s. owains ICS with Harsh latest kernel is best IMO ;-)
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
agree ^ i like fauxs kernel tho since you can overclock and under clock but for a daily driver and not caring aboout chaging the voltage harshs kernel would work just fine
Only reason I say harsh's kernel is cause I never lose wifi connection like I do on all others, well I haven't tried faux with owains latest but why fix what isn't broken.

No need to get feisty. And it seems like you already know some of the down falls of some of the ROMs. Really you should search though. But that is neither here nor there. I say you skip ICS for now. [Q] Noob question,

Can anyone someone help me choose the right rom for my Samsung Infuse.
I was looking for one but I'm not to sure or which one would be the best one,
what I'm loing for, it a rom that run on ICS or probably on JB, that runs for daily use, camera works, Data work, and phone calls works,
please let me know what are the best options
thanks
Not trying to be wise but this has been asked at least 100 times. Do a search for "best ROM".
Personally, I have tried at least 5 if the JB ROMs and haven't had any real complaints. The devs in this forum are the best.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
yes this has been asked 100 times, and i will answer it this time. you can run a search for the best rom all you want, but that will not answer your question.
i have ran many roms off of here, everything from gingerbread to jellybean. truth is every phone is a bit different. what works best on mine may not work the best on yours.
i can only suggest a few roms for you, that i have had success with...
IF you are uncertain of ICS or JB, Paranoid android has both to choose from. both PA's and CM10 come from same developer and are pretty solid.
i also enjoyed Cypher Rom. there are also some good GB roms out there.
no way around it, you will have to read. personally what i do if a rom interests me is go to the last page and start reading forward. this gives me an idea as to most recent issues and idea as to whether thay are being addressed.
ALSO, very important....READ OP's thoroughly and again if needed. this is where most problems begin. not understanding, then repeating a question already asked by others. i have a habit of reading OP and if there are too many processes of fixes to negate a side effect, i leave it alone, but thats me.
however, the roms i suggested above have excellent support from paople smarter than me. you will have to be the one to decide which one to keep. your phone, your choice, your preferences......good luck.
read read read
Thanks guys for your advise. I will try all of them a see which one its the.one tha ajust to my needs. I been using for the last year a Htc inspire and a dell streak tablet but now I am new to samsung infuse so i decide to.make. The question before i.screw things up

Try to run the ROMs for a couple days. Sometimes the glitches you get when first installing a ROM go away after a day or two.

ROM thread? You mean the section with all the ROMS in it that has Stars next to the thread title? I've been in that thread and it doesn't seem like a well organized place to find something stable. The information is there, but just not well organized.
You won't know if the Rom works for your phone until you tried them. If you can't find a Rom that works well on your phone then I suggest going back to stock. The reason I am saying this is because not everyone here have the same experience with the same Rom.

Id like to help you find a ROM that you like. This phone is so much better running it the way you'd like it to. Are you trying to run a stock based TouchWiz ROM or AOSP? This is very important as not many AOSP ROMs are completely stable. TouchWiz stock based ROMs however are very stable. I would like to suggest my ROM made off of the official ROM for our phones. It offers many very nice features which you can either choose or not choose to use with the Aroma installer. It's the forth release of the ROM so all the bugs have been fixed and the ROM is fast and stable. Please check out the thread to the ROM and read through it and see if you fund it worth trying. The thread offers a lot of good information about exactly what you will find in the ROM.

Thanks man, you are so kind! The only ROM i have ever used is Synergyrom and the last few updates I did with Synergyrom had some bugs in it. I haven't tried the very last patch though. One update gave my bluetooth phone static. This last ROM i am using from Synergy makes Dolphin crash but I'm not sure if it's due to the ROM. My google maps also isn't working either. It works but it only tells me to turn left or right but never gives me the name of the street that I want to turn on.
Anyway, all I really need from the ROM is something that allows Nova Launcher to work, Bluetooth without static, Dolphin without crashing, Google Maps to work by giving me streets names when it talks to me, and the ability to use Amazon Video on Demand. The Amazon thing might be a long shot though but that would be really awesome! I don't play any games on my phone, mainly use it for music and watching movies from youtube or whatever I download. Amazon on demand would be great though!
Edit: One more thing I forgot to add! They keyboard needs to be 1 handed operational. I forgot what it's called but I currently have it on my phone, the keyboard is smaller and moved more to the right so I can operate it with one hand. I also don't know what AOSP is so I really don't need that.

[Q] Best Stock Android ROM?

Hey guys, apologies if I'm not posting in the best possible section for this, but I've been wondering for a while.
I've been getting sick of TouchWiz. Not just the launcher (I got Nova the moment I could, and am still using it) but the customizations of the phone itself and the small annoyances that Verizon baked in, such as the always-on WiFi indicator. I've been debating going to a stock ROM for a long while, and I've made my decision to break free of the ridiculousness that is Verizon and Samsung's customizations, as they've made the phone slow, and I know it can run much better than it is right now. So here's my question:
What's the best stock Android ROM currently? I'd preferably want one that is
Being currently developed. I don't want a ROM with a lazy developer. (If ROMs are a few weeks late, I won't mind, but I don't want to be waiting forever to get the next .1 added to my version number.
Quick and minimal. Literally as close to stock Android as it can be. If there are things that need to be kept, such as the camera app, that's fine, but I'd like to rid myself of as much TouchWiz as I can.
Free of bugs. I know most ROMs aren't perfect. I'm fine with that. I need something to work as a stable daily driver, and I don't much care to hop on the next nightly I can find.
On the latest version of Android without bugs.
I have experience with rooting and flashing with Odin, but I haven't done it in a while, so if the method to root+flash is more than a one click or a couple of console commands, I'd like to be guided if possible. I have no want to brick my phone, as you can well imagine.
Also, if there's a list of stock ROMs for the Verizon GS3, I'd like to be pointed in that direction, if possible.
Thanks! I hope to hear from someone soon!
Not being rude but, if you were to take the amount of time you put into making this thread and actually looked throughout the forums you'd find a thread already on this or get this, you could go to the development threads and read the ops. Mind blowing right?

Yeah, I know that. I could surf through bunches of ROMs, but I posted here as a question for community feedback on a bunch of them, that might help me make a decision.
Is asking for opinions and information less efficient than going through a list that's new territory for me?
I'm not stupid. I want advice and info from experienced users. Is that so hard to ask for?
Great thread idea. Surprised no one else has done this.

You described most of the roms that this phone has. Most give you an option to keep phone stock, Based on each thread, they're all amazing to use daily. As far as being on the latest version you simply have to look at the thread title.
You'll definitely need to go through several threads and try them out to see what suits your needs best. It's not an easy task when there are several awesome developers on your phone!

Thanks! Didn't know I was delving into such a huge bunch of ROMs. Back in the X and Droid 2 days, I had to surf through a bunch of different ROMs that really weren't reliable. I know things have changed, but this seems pretty extreme.
If you know of any, which ones have you heard are the, well, "god-tier" ROMs? Any developers who are notable that I should check first?
Thanks again!
I wouldn't judge god tier roms, I'm happy to say that all of these roms on this device forum are just as reliable, it's only a matter of how your phone plays with the rom you end up choosing, since all devices play differently. Even if these threads are meant to be locked since they bring nothing but just opinions.

Well, I was just looking for information on the best Roms for the GS3, but since all of the Roms are apparently great, could you list a couple? Even if they aren't "god-tier", are there at least some that fit the qualifications and are well known? I know there's not going to be a "These are the best ROMs ever" list, but are there a few that are highly maintained, or some developers that are well known besides CyanogenMod?
Sorry if I seem new to this whole thing.
Barebones stock is pretty much all I've been for almost a month, and at this point I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a flashaholic, but i only flash his updates (andybones) and the great news is that he keeps the rom consistent in updates and solid Smoot performance.
Also hypredrive just got updated to rls 15 and that's another amazing rom that gets a monthly update and its worth the wait and a very determined developer.

You should give every rom a go, but you can start testing with Synergy. Try it for a week, and then test another rom
Sorry, "Best" is a term that is subjective and can only be defined by the individual, the post above/before me is a good idea.
XDA is not a support site, users are expected to use and test on their own.
