T-Mobile Prepaid and Google Voice - General Questions and Answers

I was thinking of switching to the $30 T-Mobile unlimited SMS, 4g data and 100 mins plan. And I just read up on google voice, and would like to use that with groove IP so I can have more minutes. So I was going to go get a sim card from the T-Mobile store this morning, buy a g2 off Craigslist this evening and cancel sprint tomorrow.
So my question is, do I go get a sum card (to get a phone number), then go to google voice and pay to have it ported, then buy my prepaid plan and just wait for it to port, then activate my plan?
Because the FAQ on google voice said it would cancel your plan. That's whyim unsure if I just need a sim+number to port, and then the plan. Or can I already have my prepaid activated.

From what I remember, Google will not port a pre-paid number to google voice. You can get a number from Google Voice and forward it to your t-mobile pre paid voice though. Wife's purse phone is t-mobile prepaid...
Nice thing about Sprint and GV is, you can port it to GV and not loose your plan. Is what I have done. Then added an Obi VoIP box to google voice for when I am at home. Works good and I can call any time from home with out using any of my minutes.

I made a petition about getting this to work. Maybe if enough people sign it, T-Mobile will listen.

No service Verizon Plan

I'm going to college next year, and I'll be stuck paying my own phone bill for the first time, and I'm wondering if it's even an option to have no mobile service. A plan with no calling or texting, just data.
If I could only pay $30 per month for my phone bill, that would be huge, considering minutes and texting. I could buy minutes from Skype or Google voice and make calls with those applications, and text through AIM or another free texting app.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/splash/messagingplans.jsp
That's probably what you're looking for but not sure if it's available for 4G devices and it says documentation required for smartphones.
I bought an off-contract Incredible and have it as a house phone using Google Voice and GrooVe IP. Works perfectly, too.
No plan required, just a wifi connection.
That could work, but is it required to either get texting or minutes? I really just want to be $30 for the unlimited data, and text through a texting app or AIM. I could easily make calls through skype or google voice.
The off-contract phone could work too, especially with a phone like the tbolt, but isn't a bit inconvenient to not be able to call or text while you're out? Also, does anyone know what a typical internet speed is for a college dorm?
U can also get the 50 minute loyalty plan for $20 + $30 data.
Verizon doesn't offer data only on phones. If u bought a galaxy tablet, then u could have data only.
I'd just use wifi if I was on campus, I'm sure its faster than 3g.

Check out the link in post 2, unlimited data and messages and no voice minutes
The link in post 2 says that documentation is required though... think that means you need proof that you are deaf or hard of hearing... so unless you have this they probably won't even give you that..

How do you do this as when you try to use google voice it wants the number associated with the phone right?
don't have a clue about the plan, I've never heard of such being offered though. Speeds will depend on what college you're at. Most major universities have at least a T1 line in my experience. YMMV
your best bet is to just visit your local verizon store and see if you get a tech who is nice enough to activate the service listed in post #2
I had the unlimited text/data activated over the phone with the corporate #. 800-922-0204. They didn't ask questions.
i like the $50 loyalty plan better. Its cheaper, u get 50 emergency minutes a month and u can text unlimited with google voice.

[Q] Google Voice integration?

My wife and I are on Sprint with Evos. We're thinking about switching to T-Mobile and getting Sensations.
For me the biggest hangup is how the phone and T-Mobile service will integrate with Google Voice. My current plan is to port my cell # to GV, get a new cell # from T-Mobile, and forward calls from GV to the new cell #.
Under the above scenario, will all calls eat minutes from our pool?
Will we still get free T-Mobile to T-Mobile calls?
Do WiFi calls eat minutes? Articles online seem to indicate that as of May they no longer do, but the website and T-Mobile reps say they will.
Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I was in the same boat as you. I have a ported Voice number as well. Yes, if you use their network, you will still get the free tmo to tmo. And the weekend and nights that they offer, depending on your plan. And WiFi does use your minutes if they are whenever minutes.

I just switched myelf. I got the new unlimited talk/text/web. Just ported my sprint number to google voice and plan on forwarding all calls to my t mobile phone.
Couldn't pass up the price of the new plan.
You can get free WiFi calling added to your plan so it will not deduct from your plan minutes.

T-Mobile service with g2x question

I'm currently on the 60 dollar monthly plan with unlimited talking and 2gb of data. Is there any benefit to switching to the contract value plan that is 50 dollars for 500 min and 2gb of data.
I originally was thinking I could benefit from the data roaming on the contract plan but now realize the g2x can't use att 3g towers.
The one thing I was thinking is the contract plan may protect me if T-Mobile decides to raise the rates on their prepaid plans.
No real advantage unless you want to be able to forward voicemail to Google voice or more options for buying a phone. Also, the Value Plan, equivalent to the old even more plus no contract plans has better prices but now requires a contract.

Walmart has a $30 unlimited everything plan.
Check your bill. I found I used only like 200 minutes and about 3gb of data and around 1500 SMS.
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
Changing your plan renews your contract. They may not tell you this, but I found out after the fact.

The $30 Wal-Mart plan is only $100 minutes (no nights, weekends, m2m), unlimited messaging and web (5gb throttle).
You can't switch to it though if you already have T-Mobile. You have to start fresh on that plan with a new phone number.
No contact though...so not a bad plan if the 100 minutes works for you.

I have that groove ip works out well on the 4g if I never do go over the 100 mins which I don't I find I text more often than not and use the 4g...I came from a Verizon 4G LTE plan - 300 mins/unlimited (haha 2GB is unlimited) data/ 100 txt msgs..that was twice as much..hell it was 30 for the data plan alone.
I'm on the $70 unlimited talk txt and 5gb of data. Prepaid is the way to go imo.

Not on prepaid. You have to be able to enable call forwarding at the cell network level, which can only be done on PostPaid accounts. Prepaid and/or FlexPay can't do this... (the reasoning is that it could forward to a toll # in which case post/flex pay can't be billed properly in the case of massive overages....)
I'm on family plan. 1000 minutes. Unlimited text. 2 lines of 2gb data. For 110-130

T-Mobile VVM

Is there anyway to get T-Mobile VVM to work on the monthly no contract plans?
Are you asking how to get it on your phone or how to get it activated? I think it's just a matter of adding it to your options, or call CS and ask.
I already know how to get it on my phone. I ant it activated. But I believe it can only be activated on monthly plans . I'll ask CS THANKS.

My wife is the $50 monthly plan (prepaid) and visual voicemail works fine (Galaxy S 4G). I am on the $30 100 min unlimited text, data plan (Sensation) and visual voicemail gives an error. Called Tmobile to fix it and first rep said its not available on the prepaid plan and I told her about my wife so she sent me over to tech support. Tech support said it is available on the monthly prepaid plans but as I was using the phone to call them I had to call back again from a different phone. Will update if mine gets fixed.
Thanks for the info

Want unlimited everything? Data, messaging, and calling? Read on

For this to work you must have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and be running on T-Mobiles 4G network. (If you don't know how to do that please know, there is a way to get 4G on this phone on T-Mobiles network if you have an unlocked device[you can get an unlock code on eBay] read around the threads) so let's get started.
So if you have this crazy awesome device your going to want the best for it right? And at amazing prices huh? Well to do that I reccomend doing the following join T-Mobiles Monthly 4G plan the $30 one. This is what it offers you...
-Unlimited data at 4G speeds but after 5GB's of usage your throttled down to 3G or Edge can't remember...
-Unlimited Text Messaging
-100 minutes
So why if its only 100 minutes why is the tread title saying I can get everything unlimited?
Well using the downloadable Skype app from the Google Play Store you can subscribe to one of there packages for unlimited minutes like the one that is $2.99 a month for unlimited US and Canada calling
*So at 4G speeds calling is perfect
And in total what does your monthly bill come to? $32.99 + tax WHOA! That beats the $100 a month crap!!! So I'm just here to share this with you guys and I hope you find it helpful and before you tell me I posted in the wrong place....I didn't. This is specifically for the Skyrocket...and well this thread is "skyrocket" so yeah. Enjoy!

Good pointers although it isn't skyrocket specific.
If you want the same thing on rogers without using Skype, hit me up. I have access to unlimited voice plans.

$100 a month is nuts, and I thought Rogers was expensive. I only have 200 min a month and never use 2 of them.
or you could use grooveIP and pay 4.99 once, after the first month at 34.99, you'd be at 30/month.
or u could just use bobsled and make calls for free lol.
45-50 dollar monthy is the best plan unlimited everything including minutes, i believe it has 2 gb unlimited data but you can bypass the data throttle with different apn settings.
Lemme know when you AT&T users can convince AT&T wireless to allow you to drop your minutes plan while till being able to retain our number, texting, and data. I'm at $100 per month as well (minus my 20% corporate discount) with the lowest minutes plan, unlimited texting, and unlimited 4G data.
My service provider is Tbaytel in canada, they are partnered woth rogers. For $50/mo. I get 200 daytime minutes, free evenings and wknds, unlim text, and 5gb of data (much more than i'll use in a month since wifi is so readily available.). I get this plan because I'm a "student" (which means I'm friends with the guy that works there.). Normally this plan would be $110, so I figure I'm not doing too shabby.

I get 200 mins, nationwide my 10, unlimited messages/pic/video, call display, voicemail, vvm, evenings and weekend at 6, free Rogers one number services (Skype for free) and 6 gigs of data. $62. And then 40% off of that. My fiancee has the same plan. Our combined bill is about 75 or 80 bucks.
Oh, and they keep giving me this Rogers mobile TV thing that I never use.

Anyone got any tips for someone traveling internationally? Att charges an arm and a leg to call text over seas.
Edit, maybe Google Voice? What would Google voice cost to text/call people in England while I'm in England, and to text/call people in the US while I'm in England?
Edit 2: gvoice doesn't accept international texts so that's out. But AT&T wants .99c a minute, and .50c a text. Which is insane. I could unlock my phone and go with a local gsm provider, but even local providers will charge me more for texting back to the US. Any other suggestions that don't need data? Can I forward my US gvoice number to an English phone. So text/calling to the US is free, and then use a prepaid local sim for local stuff?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Buy a Skype international calling plan there probably 3-5 dollars for England. And for texting use a texting app over wifi or 2G/3G/4G

For those of us not covered by T-Mobile, you can also look into StraightTalk. They've recently offered a "bring your own device" service, where you purchase the sim, and can use any device.
$45+tax gets you unlimited calling, text, and data. (Although I've heard about a 3GB soft cap on the data)
Nice part is that you can either Select AT&T or T-Mobile as your carrier. You just tell them which SIM you want when ordering. Put in the APN from their website, and you are good to go. They even allow you to port your number.
[Edit] Since I can't post links, just go to straighttalksim[dot]com
Of course it's prepaid with no contract. You can use the "auto refill" option on their website so you never run out of credit..but who cares since it's unlimited anyway. Worth a look if you own the phone and don't want to pay $100 for service.
I unlocked my skyrocket and got a Tmobile Sim, however I am only getting edge in a 4g area. How do I get 4g?

Figured it out, needed a T989 modem. However, 1 thing the OP left out is, that plan of 100 min, unlimited Web and unlimited txt is only valid for phones purchased from Walmart. You can't get a Sim from Tmobile store or their website, has to be from Walmart with one of Tmobile's pay as you go phones.

Well then there lying cuz this is what I did. I bought a Skyrocket 4G off of craigslist unlocked it using a eBay unlock code. And bought a t mobile sim off of there website hers the link it has to be the T-Mobile Monthly 4G Activation Kit http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit its $1 right now and has like $3 Inside. So its pretty much free. When you get it you activate your phone with that.
This plan has been discussed on slick deals for I think over a year now. Tmobile 3G and 4G is essentially the same thing. You will be throttled to edge after 5gb. Also you need to buy the sim online NOT in store to activate online. Else you will need to call and specifically request this plan, only new customers are eligible.
For a full proof quick turn around, get the cheapest phone at walmart and sign up for this plan and switch the sim into your phone.

This has been angering me for two days. Been to three different walmarts and cant find the $30 dollar activation card everyone is talking about.
Edit- Finally figured that out. I was also only getting edge. I tried flashing a T989 modem, and still only get edge. hmmm. Wondering if I didnt waste my money.
