Future of the Thunderbolt...

So... I'm winding down from my day, drinking a couple beers and checking XDA for anything I've missed throughout the day. Keep in mind this is my first Android, coming from crapberry... I know it hasn't been out long and there are issues with ril(which I don't know anything about)... I feel like some of the things I have found here I really like have slowed down, if not stopped. Before I get flamed, I understand there is a tremendous amount of work that goes into every Rom and theme we see. I just hope to see that at some point, this phone gets to the point we all hope it will. I'm trying to learn as much as I can and help anyone with questions my limited Android knowledge can accomplish. Feel free to use this thread to vent and rant... Let's get it all out here. Many thanks to the devs still holding strong... I'm just looking for thoughts on how far the development will go with this phoned compared to the EVO's I'm compared to everyday at work.

3 things to keep in mind:
1) CM7 is damn near stable and they're working hard on it. That said, [nearly] everybody who isn't working on CM7 is essentially waiting on the CM7 team to finish since [nearly] everybody wants an AOSP-based ROM. So why would they keep pouring tons of time into their current ROMs since they'll very soon be thrown away?
2) Google I/O. Quite a few of our favorite devs are being distracted by either attending or closely following this event.
3) End of the school year. A lot of our favorite devs are either high school or college students. And many of those who aren't have children. As such, this is a rough time of year for them.
Look at all of this and you shouldn't be all that surprised that things have slowed down for a bit. But I promise you, the TBolt will be one of the main platforms that people will be hacking for a while. We'll have CM7, we'll have MIUI, and we'll have many other custom ROMs and kernels. Just be patient while they get the RIL stable. This is the FIRST phone that has supported LTE and this is also the first phone (that I'm aware of) that has supported eHRPD - there are definitely some lessons that need to be learned, and that takes time.

A good amount of stuff has came out with the RIL still not completed, once the RIL is completed, the flood gates will open and you will see a large amount of ROMs made.

Hey now... Pork sword fights are saved for after work. Haha. Not comparing to the EVO, just stating that its been out much longer and had more dev time.

In addition, once 2.3 leaks, the floodgates will open again.

I'm in the same boat as you. I loved my BB Bold dearly. So easy to pimp them girls on it. Just the simplicity of the keyboard, being able to connect with other people.
However now being on my first android, i felt that I made the switch at the right time.
With BlackBerry I felt i could write a good email and msg friends all day, but I could never ever use the browser or attempt to download anything because it really was useless.
Tbolt on the other hand, I was able to do everything that i couldn't do on my blackberry, Msging still sucks on the Tbolt, But it is way way better then trying to browse on a blackberry.
With that said, there is still something i miss about the blackberry, but honestly i couldn't be happier.
One more thing, When i first got into android i was completely loss. I have no idea what to do. It was hours and hours of mindless surfing on many different android websites. Hours of reading on root and roms.
Anyhow Android is the future. Long live Google!!!

I see it like this: the Thunderbolt is still an infant--it eats, sleeps, cries, pukes, and poops. When it gets more mature, it can crawl, walk, talk, and more! It just needs some TLC and patience!

It hasn't even been 2 months. It took a whole month if not more I believe to root the Incredible if I remember correctly. Learn some patience people.
You can't compare this phone to the EVO, the EVO has been out for almost a year now.

I gotta agree with the OP.
Development seems to be at a stand still. I understand most developers are waiting for the ril to be completed. But, while we're waiting other phones will be released and developers will start to look towards that phone for development support. I think we'll be left behind. And it really does seem like only 2 developers are working on getting the ril, but when the G2 was rooted it seemed like all of team douche was working to get the ASOP ROM up and running. With the Thunderbolt it's more like team Slayer. Progress was made quickly with the G2 and other devices. Quickly even with team douche building for all devices at once.
I'm not slapping other developers in the face. I'm currently running adrynalyne build, and I like. Great battery life. But I want the speed and stability other devices have with CM7. I really do appreciate the having the support we currently have. And I've donated to the developers of my choice in support of their work.

Coming from the OG Droid, I noticed that many ROMs are based on CM. So we WILL see many more roms.
I can assure you we will get 2.3.4 sometime in the future especially since HTC "promised" that we'll get some kind of 2.3 version. 3.1 was announced at Google I/O, but that probably won't happen until mid next year for us (if we are lucky).

This is the first Verizon 4g phone. The ril is brand new to all. The phone will take off when the ril is polished and released.

While I don't have a Thunderbolt and I'm still rocking an OG Droid, I do believe I can say something about this.
I suspect that a lot of people share in these sentiments, myself included. But I believe the reason why is because so many people were amazed at the community that developed after the Droid 1 was released. The Motorola Droid really revolutionized the Android ecosystem. With Android 2.0, Android changed big-time. The Droid (and Android 2.0) was leaps and bounds over anything that had predated it in the Android world, and there was all sorts of development options that opened up with the creation of that new phone.
Unfortunately, I believe that the days of new findings and developments like in the days and weeks in November and December '09 are gone for good, and won't be matched by anything in the near future in the Android world. New phones will come and go, the Thunderbolt included. There will be big-time phones (again, like the Thunderbolt) that people will naturally be attracted to, and those will be the centers of development for the community for a good period of time. But I don't believe you will ever again see a surge in development like you saw for the Motorola Droid.
There is definitely still plenty of development going on in a community like this. It just doesn't seem like as much as there was in the Android community in the past, and it definitely wasn't as much. But I don't think we can ever match those numbers again, so don't let that comparison get you down.

I fully agree with what you said. So far there has been some really good to great stuff but I feel personally this is only the beginning of what potential lies within what could be done with ROMs on the Thunderbolt. I can't wait for the RIL to be finished.

I got my OG Droid in Nov. 09 and I personally do not think ROM development was the golden age like you are so fondly remembering. Verizon's first android phone brought a lot of new people to android. It still took quite awhile for community to evolve.
People seem spoiled now ... TB is new tech, we need to give it time. The Devs are bringing out some very Nice sense based ROMs and AOSP will follow... give it time.

"Is dinner ready yet?!" No. "Is it ready yet?!" No. "How about now?!" No. *shoe to the head* "Ow! What the hell was that for?!"
You get the picture. This is exactly what you guys are doing here but it won't be a shoe that you'll get to the side of your head, you'll have pushed a good developer or two away and then you'll really be crying.
Btw, first paragraph is a true story. Actually happened to me a few times.

So how, exactly, do you expect other LTE devices to leave us left behind? EVERY SINGLE Verizon LTE device will build upon what is done for the RIL with the Thunderbolt. If anything, add'l LTE devices coming will actually HELP the Thunderbolt community! At some point, yeah, we'll move past the Thunderbolt. But that won't be until multi-core phones blow single-core phones away. And we're not close to there yet. Perhaps Ice Cream Sandwich will make that a reality (we hope) and that's still 7(?) months away!

Why ICS is important to me.

Watch the video (In case you havent seen it yet!). In it Matias Duarte explains how the Android team is beginning to try and create a cohesive and unified atmosphere with the os at the most basic levels. I for one, am absolutely thrilled to see that they are finally going to be paying attention to design and aesthetics. Usability of the platform can also benefit from this immensely.
I am also tired of people saying "ICS isnt all that special". It really doesnt matter how "special" you think it should be. What matters is that its the next iteration of the os. We all want to have our devices updated and current. So wanting this on our devices has less to do with design in this sense, and a lot more to do with jumping on the wagon of unification. I would greatly prefer beautiful apps and ease of use over anything Gingerbread has offered us so far. Now I already know that a lot of the visual benefits of ICS come mainly from theming and such, but its profoundly more exciting when the theming itself is coming from the creators of Android and not some hard-to-find source in the app market.
Lastly, I would appreciate it if you guys could give your thoughts on this. Are you excited to see the new direction the Android team along with Matias, are going in? Do you feel that they are focusing on some rather important points in the software (usability, framework, aesthetics) or not? And of course please keep the flaming and crude/rude comments to yourselves. Thanks all for listening to my rant.

+1 internets I totally agree!

As nice as ICS's upgrade would be...it's not in Sammy's or AT&T interest
Sammy want's device sales and AT&T wants new/renewed contracts. By limiting ICS to 2012 devices, it provides incentive for 2010/2011 device owners to pony up for the new hotness with the new software.
Now before anyone wants to say, "WAIT WAIT, Apple..." save it. We're not talking about Apple here. Sammy is the OEM and they control what happens for the product line.
Sure you can wait for a dev to 'hopefully' get around to releasing an ICS port and yeah, it may be decent. That's your choice.
My upgrade plans begin in 2013 when ICS should have a few months in the wild and become more mature. By then all my smartphones will be eligible for upgrade discounts. I have no issue with AT&T's service as they allow me to keep my grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I'd rather have ICS when it's grown up and not so much a baby. Also, fully functional on my device too would be nice.

The main reason i want ics is so i can impress my friends lol. It also just has features that i just like better. Im not going to die without it, but it would be nice with it. Im sorry guys who have to wait for their contract, both my parents have their upgrades up and both are fine if they get my infuse, and i get the note.

Joshua Topolsky! My man! He was the senior editor at Engadget.com before leaving to start theverge.com. He actually left his Apple iPhone after the 3gs I think. He soon thereafter bought a Nexus One. Which I think he still uses to this day. And touts it every chance he gets. He does however praise apple for incitefull design and craftsmanship. I mean he is in a business (tech blogging) that is notorious for praising the behemoth company(not that this is a good thing) But trust you me when I say he isn't afraid to drop the hammer on Apple when he voices his gripes over their products. I would venture to say that most blogging sites require their employees to work on Macbooks now though. It seems to me that they would rather choose a totalitarian system like the Macs because they are less prone to buginess and viruses. And when your in an industry that thrives off of having secure data on close deadlines and less vulnerabilities, Macs (imo) just do it better. I dont use a mac, never have, I have had an Iphone 3g one time for a while. But will probably never go back. Unless I become rich or something. You do have to admire their design principles though both physically and software wise. When you compare Apple's aesthetics to Androids up till now, its just no-contest which is more cohesive and well thought out.

funny thing is I used to frequent a guitar forum and a well known member was a Samsung senior cdma systems engineer and his phone was an iPhone. that was before cdma iPhones existed so he was obviously on att which is big in texas. he didn't boast about apple too much nor Samsung, basically the only things I remember that stood out was he refuted the idea that the apple products have Good audio. said the newer apple products are not as good as the older ones and suffered from clipping (overdrive basically) and boasted the galaxy s in that area. but when it came down to it he was a fan of ios for the accessories and high quality audio software (garage band for the ipad) and got an ipad 2.

i always have an upgrade....(4 lines=leverage) .. but i will not purchase another phone until ICS is available, especially because of updates. i want the note..but if no ics pre-installed..i aint buying.. i almost went to verizon for the nexus but they dont have good coverage where i travel

ICS should be important to everyone. Even if only for the principle of it.

yeah but they haven't posted progress so its anyone's guess as to what issues they are having. remember the people working on it have real lives and are doing it as a hobby. so i don't think anyone is working on it full time.

Yea of course. Its great to know it is being worked on. Anything is better than nothing!

He will probably answer in this thread lol but he is. One of the leads with the infuse cm7 team. He has been busy with other stuff though (carpantry). He is around. Ics will come someday hopefully...

even though some people will drop their Infuse's this Spring, Im really hoping some devs will still try to bring over ICS for the people who want to feel out the year on devices. I wish I wasnt so disorganized, otherwise i might actually have the capacity to learn how to develop. =/

Which part of this is immature? The part where I made sure that the sarcasm was in the first dozen characters of the message body - so that a mouse hover over the subject in the topic list would reveal it?
Or the part where I'm expressing my continued annoyance with the complete lack of realistic response from Samsung on this? (which is the point of the messsage - in case you missed it.)
As for being a great developer - this is actually quite tame compared to some of the things those better than myself (both of them, actually) have to say about samsung, HTC, and others.
I'm merely repeating what samsung's marketing department is already doing: Talking about a great ICS upgrade coming to these devices, but leaving the page blank when asked WHEN it's coming.
As for how it might make me look - I honestly couldn't care less. Because it seems to matter to you, however, I'll reveal that I didn't bother to shave this morning, and I haven't taken a shower since last night. Oh, and my shirt is wrinkled. (That has nothing to do with maturity - it's just laziness.)

Really... Wow. This is NOTHING compared to the comments I post on google+ whenever one of the samsung people write about their upgrades, new hardware, and support policies.

I'd be dishonest if I didn't say that I'm close to giving up hope for this tablet. Samsung is treating it as a red-headed stepchild, and won't even release the full honeycomb sources so that the dev community can pick up the pieces and fix that which they either don't care about or don't have the resources to fix.
However, its not just this one tablet. I'm starting to notice a pattern with samsung... they do make nice devices, but once they have your money, you apparently are nothing more than excess baggage to them. Instead of giving us good support, releasing GPL'd source code, and delivering upgrades that they promised, they gave us an app we can use to complain with. I guess having an app spitting out scripted responses is cheaper than having a human doing it. It's not like you really need a human to say "it's coming soon."
They have resources developing a dozen new devices at a time (given their rate of new product announcement), but what resources are fixing the issues and keeping their existing product lines current? It doesn't seem like much.
Since ICS was released on the GSM galaxy nexus (8 months ago), how many new products has samsung released or announced? A couple tablets, and several new phones. How many existing products (which were promised ICS upgrades) have received that upgrade? Two (and at least the SGSII release was very buggy.)
Keep in mind that samsung has had the ICS sources for quite a bit longer than other companies.. Yet, other companies are upgrading their existing devices long before samsung is. Look, for example, at Asus tablets.
What does that tell me? It tells me that if I buy a samsung device, they'll treat me well for the 14 day return period, and then treat me like dirt. It tells me that a samsung device is a FOOLISH investment.
Samsung, you will NOT be getting my money for my next tablet purchase. I don't care how thin it is or how fast it might be. I'd rather have a supported product that's slightly thicker or has a slightly slower processor.

If I get a Samsung device I think it would be a Nexus as google should provide better support.
I've got a Galaxy S Vibrant and Gingerbread hasn't even been released for it. Thanks to developers here on XDA it's running ICS.

Well you have to blame T-mobile on this. They are in control. Vibrant 4G has GB, Captivate on both Rogers and AT&T get GB, i9000 got GB long before that.

What is with ICS for GT-6201(EU 3g)? I Only see 6200 and 6210(EU wifi).
Can anyone help me?

the question itself is disrespectful. Tell the hardworking devs here that there is no 'real' development going on. nice.

I think the price detours alot of people, even dev's in comparison to some of the competitors out there. I/O issues even scared one CM dev who left the device awhile ago. I think part of the issue was waiting on JB source to drop for this device. To to sum it up, it's really a few factors. I wouldn't say there is no development, but just minimal, but it's getting there. It should get better in the forthcoming months as well, so be patient.

what are the i/o issues?

Development usually picks up several months after the device is out, tends to weaken just before a major update (like JB), and picks up again shortly after the sources are out.
Part of the reason the infinity is hard to develop for is we only have a partial unlock from Asus. Another reason, like mentioned before, is the tablet is rather expensive. Further, compare that to the intense competition from the Samsung side usually Samsung wins over deveopers because they give sources for everything they can and even often offer assistance to devs to make custom stuff for their hardware.
That being said, it seems like the tables are turning for Samsung, last i heard the S3 had a locked bootloader which is rather annoying.
Basically, wait. Just hang tight till the JB mess blows over and things stabalize. There is development for this tablet, just maybe not as much as other devices because this is newer and going through an update. Relax and trust that the devs will make things great XD

Hi guys this is my first time posting although I've been reading these forums for quite some time now
First of all i'd like to thank all the devs that work so hard for this phone. We all appreciate it immensely. :good:
Now down to business.
I've started a petition for LG and T-Mobile to release an update for the T-Mobile G2x (LG-P999).
I know this seems pretty useless at this point but hey its better to try then do nothing at all

There is a difference between negative and realistic. IMHO it would be a waste of time considering nexus 4 and EULA for the g2x.

I think doing nothing is more of a waste of time. It's really not that hard to just go and comment at least on the lg forums.
If you go to the lg forums you will find a this written by an LG employee:

What he said is what im doing, trying to get people to voice their opinion about the phone.
Also what he said about the LG Thrill gives me some hope.
If you don't wanna sign the petition i understand but at least go to the official lg forums and "complain".
It may be a long shot and will probably never happen but why not try at least, like RyanLG said, "who knows"?
Maybe just maybe if we get a lot of people to show their frustration and support for an upgrade a miracle will happen.
Won't know for sure unless we try is all i'm trying to say :angel:
Also, since development is practically at a stand still what else is there to do?
Rummage through xda forums everyday hoping for something new? x.x

Maybe we can reach out to other developers with lots of experience to look at the radio problem or build Hackfest roms? We basically only have Maz left and we can't expect him to do everything for us.

Maz is put through maintaining a gingerbread kernel on top of a new project that some users wanted, fixing bluetooth calling. There were some other projects maz had set put to do also. Such a nice guy but lets look at this situation realistically. This phone is a 'sunken ship'.

That'd be awesome if we could contact other devs to help with the ril issue. Problem I see there though is that I'm sure many of those devs are working hard on other projects. Plus, the ril issue is something that is really difficult to resolve (if even possible?) and Idk if more devs would even be of help at this point but nonetheless the more devs working on this phone the better.

I agree maz is super awesome! To me it seems like he's the only dev currently doing anything. Im using his latest beta kernel and my phone is not only snappy but also has awesome battery life so much props to him.
And I have accepted that this phone is a sunken ship but I will never lose hope

The phone is 2 years old at this point in the States. The end of life of the device through T-Mobile was January 2012. The hardware was pretty much a prototype version of the current Tegra 2 platform, and we'll never know the proper way to code for it. The RIL issues will never get fixed, nor did they have a shot to be fixed. If you're still on the device, you're either like me and too poor to afford an upgrade, or somehow stuck in a deal for the phone. If you used an EIP through T-Mo, you can pay it back early instead of monthly and get yourself a new one on the plan.
In the end it comes down to knowing exactly what phones are going to be popular for developers. Nexus devices and the Galaxy line are where you want to be if you want good support. That's where all the action is and will be for some time. The HTC One shows some promise, but with AT&T locking the bootloader, that's one less carrier brand that can be unlocked.
Pick wisely and don't bother with this stuff. Getting your hopes up will only cause you more anger when the truth comes around.

Interesting. Are you saying that the entire Optimus 2X line of phones was not based on the Tegra 2 platform used on other phones, but rather an incomplete prototype (probably because they were rushing it to market), or that this is only true for the G2X (aka P999), hence the differences between it and the other models?
