So guys, i am running DARKSIDE 4.0 and was wondering, is the wifi hotspot feature in the quick settings area of the notification the one that the carrier charges you for? Or is it like one of those apps on the market...thank
It's in wireless settings in the normal settings menu (Where wifi, data etc. settings are) If you're on T-mobile it doesn't cost any extra.

t mobile doesn t charge for the wifi hotspot. just make sure you are plugged in via a outlet or usb bc your battery will die quick.

I was wondering If it was possible to use the g2x as a wifi adapter. What I would like to do is maybe have a App that allows you to connect to your home wifi and then share it to your PC through USB connection.

If only it was that simple. In a sense yes that's what I'm talking about. But I'm not trying to share my 4g connection. I want to use it to share the internet from my "home wifi router" the wireless adapter in my PC went out and I don't really have the money to spend for a new one this close to x-mas.

I'll sell you a USB one I used to use with my TiVo for $10 (b/g I believe), just PM me.
Turn data off to make sure its not using your 4G connection, then just tether it connected to wifi and it should work. I've done it before numerous times.

That sounds like a decent solution. Haven't thought about that, do you have a recommendation on a good tether App that doesn't need a whole bunch of UN necessary work.

Settings app perhaps? USB tethering is just above wifi tether. I've done this many times.

tahahawa is right it is built in to the android software you dont need anything extra. All you need to do is connect to wifi like normal whatever network you want to use then shut off your data connection if you want to be safe but it is not nessesary. Then connect to the pc via USB and check the tethering box in settings and then you are done. No need for any other apps or anything else.
try out pdanet its a pretty usefull app theres a pc client u need to install and congifure as well but its really easy...probably best app out there for this...also not sure if u r running the miui.us rom or not but it has a built in tethering client
Its built in to our G2x's. Just make sure you have the LG drivers installed on your computer and then check USB tethering in Settings and everything should be golden!

I don't know what the deal is with the stock App but it just doesn't want to work with my computer. Wifi hot spot works fine but the USB tether wont. I have all the drivers for the phone as far as I know. Had to instal a bunch when I rooted the phone.

Hey all!
I rooted my rooted Samsung Galaxy SII T989 for T-Mobile yesterday, and went to install wifi tethering with barnacle today. I was about to install when I saw the button "Wifi Hotspot" in the notifications bar. I clicked it, and used my wifi tethering. So my question is, what is the point in using barnacle? I can apparently now use T-Mobile's hotspot service for free, so it seems pointless to use a third party application. So my question would be: what is the point in freezing the wifi tethering process, or installing a new one when you can just use the normal tethering app?
Additional note: I'm using the Darkside Evolution Rom
It's all the same, same with HTC portable hotspot it does the same as WiFi tether or barnacle from the market

Just wonder if this or this article will answer your question.
Also note if you are using custom ICS ROM with Sense 4.0 WiFi tethering might not work.

It should work on your device then. Never tried this ROM, but my guess that the same instructions as for stock ROM could be used.
Hi I'm running eye candy and confirm wifi tether works great with this rom. Its a matter of settings. Settings go like this., make sure and power off phone and pull battery put back in before you start to tether each time. Settings are routing fix checked, disable wake lock, channel 11, set up wext ad hoc checked, device profile generic ics, dns,8.8.8.8,lan 192.168.2024,transit power disabled. Your set.if it starts with a error power off pull battery put battery back in power on you are good to go.! Do the battery every tethering session. I hope this helps you. Works like a charm. Its a simple free app at the playstore called wifi tether. I use it daily with the eyecandy rom. Best wishes and happy tethering!

With just root can we use the wifi tether apk on the verizon SG3? If so, are there any special things that need done to make it work?
yeap, you should be able to. you just need to enable unknown sources under settings/security

what app are you using? i used to use Wugfresh on my droidx.
I just posted in the General form about this. My recommendation is to use a 3rd party app such as Wifi Widget, that will turn on the built in wifi tethering app without checking for account status. Verizon might change this in the future but it is work much better for me than 3rd party wifi tether apps.
Has anyone seen a way to enable tethering via Bluetooth (bypassing the check for subscription)?
When I'm out and about I like to have my tablet connected to my phone over bluetooth. However, with my new S3 it asks me to subscribe to a tethering plan when I try checking the box to share my phones internet connection over bluetooth.
I'm stock, rooted and on a Verizon capped data plan (not the share everything plan)
Anyone?

Eric, can you provide a link to a Wifi Widget app that will turn on the built in tethering capability on my VZW SGS3? I tried a couple and they didn't seem to work.
Thanks!

bond32, thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I don't really like the Fattin widgets icon. Tethering Widget also seems to work and I like it's 1x1 icon better. I had forgotten that I was using it on my Samsung Fascinate running CM10 while my SGS3 was getting fixed.

Fxxking Verizon, restricting the wifi/Bluetooth tethering feature...
Does anyone know How can I enable Bluetooth tethering for my Verizon S3?
Thanks a lot.
I'm thinking Of increasing My cell package to LTE and tethering My laptop to My phone.
My current cell package Is 6G/month With the LTE it jumps to 10G/month. I typically use 6G on My cell and 2 to 3G at home per month
has anybody done this? if So can you offer some feedback and any pitfalls.

All I could see is if you're flashing ROMs on your phone and it suddenly messes up then you can't go online to troubleshoot but if you don't flash on a daily basis then everything should be fine. I personally haven't done tethering on a regular basis (even though my plan allows me to).
no I don't ever put custom ROMs

FWIW, tethering kills your battery life. You use a fair bit of internet at home, but not really a "power user" per se, so you're kind of in the gray area where this type of thing could work for you but still isn't a great idea IMO.
Sounds like a good idea if it saves cash at the end of the month. At home I easily blow through 200 gigs per month, but if my usage resembled yours, I'd do it.

Ya I'm thinking that's gonna be a con. but the phone will basically be plugged in once I'm home. do you thing because I'll be on LTE for a prolonged time it will affect the phone, because Of increased heat
Ya I'm right on that edge. that's why this Is still in the analysis phase.

Mostly TV! Netflix, hulu, crackle, youtube. Still have the og dvr but I hardly touch it anymore. Always have something streaming. I am fearful of imminent tiered data, hopefully Time Warner holds out.
My dad is doing this its saving him a lot of money and his lte is actually faster then his old network, the only downfall is make sure you plug it in because it drains your battery quick.

My savings would only be about $22/month but I'd get faster sppeds. My home connection is 6Mbps my friends are getting 20 to 40Mbps on their LTE phones.
The only thing holding me back is what if my needs change and I need more internet at home? Especially now that winter is arrving a lot more time indoors/at home.

what is pdanet? I just googled it and it's just an app that let's you tether and we can already do that stock with our Skyrockets. I wanted to tether using wifi very rare I'll use the USB plug, because I find plugging into the computer takes forever to charge.
