Grooveshark is being sued by Vivendi, Sony and Warner for copyright infringement...
Here is the post regarding the lawsuit:
Two of the world's largest record companies on Thursday joined a lawsuit against Grooveshark, an online music service they say infringes on their copyrights.
The music companies, Sony Corp.'s Sony Music Entertainment and Access Industries Inc.'s Warner Music Group, joined in an amended complaint to a suit filed last month by Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
The amended complaint alleges that Grooveshark executives personally uploaded copies of songs to which they didn't have the rights, a claim first made in the November lawsuit. That behavior would appear to go beyond the bounds of what is protected by the "safe harbor" provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA, which gives operators of online services some protection from liability if their users engage in copyright infringement.
Grooveshark Chief Executive Samuel Tarantino and others personally uploaded thousands of songs for which they didn't have rights, according to the lawsuit, which cites unspecified "business records" of Escape Media Inc., the parent company of Grooveshark. Grooveshark is based in Gainesville, Fla. Mr. Tarantino and other executives are named personally as defendants in the lawsuit, along with Escape Media.
In a written statement, a spokesman for Grooveshark said: "We cannot comment on litigation we have not seen, but will aggressively defend our rights in court. Grooveshark is a company founded on our love of music and our passion to give musicians a free platform to reach audiences worldwide. We respect the intellectual property of all artists, and our strict policies are designed to ensure that our users only upload content to which they are entitled. This is a policy which we vigorously enforce within DMCA requirements."
Thursday's amendment added a new detail that suggests Grooveshark knew it needed to license the material available on its service. "We cannot be a real company until and unless we secure the licenses that we need," a Grooveshark executive wrote in an email sent to record companies that is quoted in the lawsuit.
Universal is the world's largest recorded-music company. Sony Music is the second-biggest and Warner is the third. The No. 4 music company, EMI Group, licensed its catalog to Grooveshark after settling its own lawsuit against the service. EMI is owned by Citigroup Inc., which is in the process of selling it to Universal Music.
Grooveshark has been controversial in the music industry, which has sued many online-music services that let users download songs to hard drives. But Grooveshark is a "streaming" service that lets users listen to songs free of charge as they play through their Web browsers without keeping a copy. The site carries advertising.

[Q] Copyright on (old) games
Hi, I was wondering if there is some kind of copyright on (old) games. Let's say I have ported a classig game to a mobile platform and even tried to reuse much of the graphics. Can the company that created the orginal game protest and even take further legal steps? Also, can I use the orgininal name? Thx, Bart
That depends, on company as well as on the game, there are some sites in the www providing old games for free, totally legal. Don't think it would be illegal to port these games to android, but I'm no lawyer... \\Just google for Abandonware, there you'll find some sites Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
Copyright varies from country to country. You can google and find how long copyright lasts in your country but don't expect a favourable answer. For many things it's 70 years after the author/creator's death.
PS4 vs. Xbox One
Any comments? I personally have been a Microsoft fan all my life, but after hearing what they're planning to implement on the Xbox One, I'm definitely going with the PS4. The DRM practices and always-online policies are a huge turn-off for me, and always having the Kinect microphone and camera plugged in is also a bit worrisome. Might just have to switch to Linux as well if this is the direction in which Microsoft is planning on going.
I was a huge fan of the Playstation 1 and 2, but then the 360 came along and I loved it; mainly because of the controller. And to be honest, that was a good enough reason to pass on the PS3. With the Xbox One however, the controller is just not a good enough reason to upgrade. I mean, I've liked the direction Microsoft went in in the last few years with the kinect and all but this "always connected" bull and the lack of focus towards gaming and becoming more of a media entertainment center really grinds my gears. Not to mention xbox live being the biggest ripoff ever. At this point in time I would rather go for the PS4, despite the controller. Sigh, I wish my hands were smaller.
I'm with you on the drm issue they are trying to do. If you lose internet connection for more than 24hrs you will not be able to play your game offline. If you have time Warner you know this is possible. I loved how Sony punched Xbox in the no no area with the video "how to share ps4 games" lol Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
My internet doesn't always work (whose does?) So I'm going with Ps4!!! Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
Be sure to watch the E3 press conference. The Microsoft side that is. It reveals a lot more about the Xbox One. Don't drop your opinion of Microsoft until you've watched it and clear up all of your wariness. Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
PS4 hands down. If it comes in at the rumored sub400 price tag I'll be getting it for sure.
Yeah, price tag is a big issue for me. At this point, I'm unlikely to get either straight out of the gate, because the new features aren't important enough for me to shift off my 360 and PS3. If they were sub-300 or offered backwards compatibility, I'd be tempted. As it stands... meh. Maybe after the price drops. And I figure out 3 or 4 games that won't come out with my current consoles that fall into the "will definitely buy" category, rather than just the "that'd be nice... someday" group.

The executive from Microsoft said on camera....if you don't have an internet connection they have a product that will play offline games ...the 360 lol One note is that the PSN will be a subscription fee now if you want to have access to online content of the game. Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium Click to expand... Click to collapse I think you got the story wrong (Or I wasn't updated) but PSN will be free. The way you or other users pay for PSN is by taxes (if you haven't noticed there are some content that are charged with tax) and the PSN Plus subscription. The PSN Plus Subscription gives you access to exclusive content, if you are not a member you cannot get exclusive discounts or exclusive demos. PSN plus in no way will affect any DLC or content from third party companies.

Add a game to attract downloads?
We have a client wanting to add a game into their app. The app we have developed is for the insurance industry. The client believes by adding a game it will attract more downloads and increase returning users. We are not convinced that adding a game will achieve either. In our view people download an app to get to the point. An app needs to satisfy a direct need i.e. a banking app shows your balance. A game seems like an after thought. We are also concerned that the game will have to of a very good standard in order to attract use and not be ridiculed. With the likes of EA Sports spending millions on app game development this is a difficult area to compete. With this in mind we would consider developing a simply addictive game like Pac Man. I would love to know your views on this subject. Do any apps exists that have managed to offer a game into a 'sensible' app and made it work?
You should ask your client why their app exists in the first place. Is the app designed to aid users conducting business with the insurance industry? Or is the app designed as marketing in order to draw in more potential customers. It is not a good idea to design one product to do two completely different things, as you will end up not doing either thing particularly well. If the client is hoping to increase their customers, developing a separate game app that is free as a marketing tool would be more feasible, as you would have one app dedicated to conducting business, and another app conducting marketing for the company.

At the client meeting I suggested creating an additional game app to assist in their aim to reach a new target audience. It nice to have someone back your approach - thanks.

Android & iOS game to cure cancer
The game was developed during a 48-hour Cancer Research UK Game Jam, where programmers and designers from Amazon, Facebook, Google, City University, Omnisoft and the charity itself combined to create, from scratch, a mobile app that is fun to play yet uses methods for you to aid research directly. The space flight game devised uses actual gene data as backdrops of a fictitious material that must be collected. Please download the app and save lives.
