Google maps and Latitude soooo slow! - Galaxy S Plus I9001 Android Development

anyone else experiencing slow tracking and movment when using google maps or latitude?
my GF's Wildfire S is perfect while my Galaxy S plus is slow to get GPS if it gets it at all and incredibly slow while using maps or latitude, its like when you used to play a game on a pc and the HDD would start thrashing lagging your game like crazy.
its as if something is trying to access cpu in the background, im getting sick of this phone it was supposed to be a bit of an upgrade to my Wildfire S but all i see is the Wildfire S kick its arse even with that 600Mhz cpu compared to my 1.4Ghz cpu.
can you check please how it runs by clicking the compass icon top right while looking at the map and setting it to follow you so the map moves around you when you turn.
Thanks

Hi BackDaws,
This is a common problem it seems across the SGS+ phones as I have also been facing the same problem. This is what I have found and you may check it at your end aswell.
1. Enter the start and the end direction and the route comes up.
2. Now tap the Blue icon which states your current position and it will now come to the centre of your screen.
3. Then press the cmpass icon on the top right. Now your screen will refresh as you move but now the problem that you will face is that the whole route has been compressed in one screen and you will not be able to make out if there are frequent turn in your rout.
4. Now go the Zoom out tab that is there at the right bottom corner and Zoom it to a level where you can see the route clearly with the turns.
See if this helps... It has helped me but there are times when the refresh rate is slow because of the data transfer rate.
Also do let me know if you find any other way out
Thanks
Sunil

Remove GPS lag bij using optical trick??

While driving home I got an idea to remove the lag in Tomtom 7 on the Touch pro by using an optical trick. And I need your advice....
In tomtom you can choose an image as the pointer of your location on the map (by default blue pointer). Some posts in this forum stated that the real position is at the tip of the pointer, where this used to be in the 'center' of the pointer. Still some people have to deal with lag.
Now my idea: what if we change the default icon by a custom made icon of which for example the lower half is transparent, while the upper half is the default pointer. The resolution of the image that represents the icon would be a number of pixels higher (width stays the same) and it would be the questions whether Tomtom allows larger images to be read as icon.
But: assume it works, in your screen the blue pointer would move a but to the top of your screen, like as if it reduces your lag.
Probably there are other complications (like what wil happen during a turn, would it look like your position is outside the road....??), but it is just an idea.
My favorite idea I heard was to have a 5-10 meter pole (or whatever your lag is) mounted to the front of your car with your phone stuck to it and then have a pair of binoculars next to you so you can actually see the screen
But seriously, have you not noticed that when you stop driving the position reported is very close to where you actually are. With your suggestions this would change and IMO not be good.
I resolved my lag issues with my diamond (and I'm sure many others have as well) by using the latest versions of iGO8 and using it in 2D mode. I swear, I have no lag now what so ever. The same can't be said for in Tomtom but TTN7 is rubbish compared to iGO8 anyway IMHO .
GFXboost also apparently improves the visual performance of iGO8, so another point to consider .

Possible IGO/GPS LAG in HD2 - help...

Since it's my first time running IGO on this device, and I don't have another device to compare its performance with... I just wanted to make sure that its functioning normally.
#1 - When I start driving (from a complete halt), the application updates the velocity counter and the guidance arrow position after only 3-6 seconds?... (in this time, the velocity is @ 0, obviously, and my guidance arrow is at my previous position).
#2 - Let's say I've reached a junction with a traffic light, again, I start driving from a complete halt, the guidance arrow is stuck at my previous position (my halt position) for about 3-6 seconds, and only after-wards it registers my actual turn and proceed with tracking.
Is this a normal behavior of IGO?... I have tried both 8.3.2.97313 & 8.3.4.102680 - it seems that they provide identical results. GPS Configurations - COM4 / Baud - 57600
I hope you guys understand... it's quite hard to explain without some visual demonstration.
Thanks in advance!
No thats not normal.
iGo8 on my phone has a max lag of 2 seconds..
Try fidling with the baud rate settings... Mine is set to:
Port: 4
Baud: 4800
Hope that fixes your problem.

Why would a LOWER baud rate make the interface snappier?
I guess that 4800 is a sort of "default" value, rather than forced one, which might cause problems... since Windows Mobile manages the gps configurations automatically, this might solve it. so far, even after changing it to 4800, I don't think it actually changed anything. I wonder because some people claim that their IGO navigates smoothly without lags and provides amazing accuracy - mine doesn't seem to meet those claims at all.
I can confirm that I can get a fixed gps signal indoors, even IGO runs very well - menus/responsiveness wise, but I think that the behavior of the navigation itself has to be improved.
What car are you driving? You should now that the front windows of new cars are coated with some sort of metal and therefore the reception inside the car is limited. Maybe that's the issue, because my father has the same problem when using his PNA in his buisness-car. It seems to lag and sometimes even lose the signal out of nowhere.
It's an old Daihatsu Applause, I doubt it has something to deal with the front window (I'm getting a good reception inside my house, in less than 10 seconds). I'm aware of some EU regulations for cars since 2005/2006, "luckily" I haven't yet owned one of these. ;-)
I wish I could test CoPilot/TomTom, but they don't seem to offer support for my region.
a tip for the gps configuration:
go to the gps menu inside igo8 -> turn off gps -> set gps to automatic
that did the trick for me, every manual setting somehow didn't work or made problems and now everything works fine so far.
you mean com port -> automatic / gps - untick?
what about baud setting?...
thanks for your help!
- you remove the selection on "gps activated"
- then you click on "auto-search" (don't know if it says that exactly, mine is set to german)
it should then search for the correct settings and select "activated" by itself. now you're set.
Well "automatic search" finds the GPS on [email protected] and sets it accordingly.
But it doesn't change getting more than 2fps while navigating.
The navigation-sim shows that rendering perfomance isn't the problem, because that is really smooth.
The GPS position is somehow not interpolated or whatever, with this horrible results, I really cannot understand why it's not bugging people...
Mr. Boba23 - I could kiss you! It's now silky-smooth again
I had it set to "use device settings", because I'd wanted the light-sensors auto-backlight to be active, but guess what, it's still active at "always on".
Great tip!
@Boba23, Thanks a gazillion! I was very dissapointed with IgO, as the simulator makes the device look a fast gaming computer, the actual navigation looked like a commodore 64.
Now, with your tip, both simulation and actual driving looks the same, THANKS.
PS. If you want to go really crazy with frames per second, buy a globaltop Headsup DIsplay GPS, it does 5HZ !! 5 updates in GPS per second. All other GPS give you 1 hz.
so at this point, I can understand that the lag and the "dancing guidance cursor while in a static position" which I'm experiencing probably point on a faulty device, since none of you guys experience these phenomenons.
igo8

[Q] Input lag under ICS?

I just did a little test with the app Multitouch Visualizer 2 (https://market.android.com/details?...y5tZXRhbGV2Lm11bHRpdG91Y2gudmlzdWFsaXplcjIiXQ..) and I seem to get input lag fråm it.
It registers all 10 fingers just ok but if I hold one finger on the display and just momentarily tap another finger to the display it seems that it doesn't register it right away.
Can anyone confirm my findings?
I did the same thing as you and I got similar results.
I think I noticed this a little bit when playing shadowgun and it would not shoot right away when moving around. But other than that it hasn't affected any other apps that I've really noticed.
I have noticed the input lag in some other games and apps though. I never noticed it under HC.
Just did another test in Input Benchmark. I constantly got 80Hz refresh rate under HC but now under ICS the value is flickering around 69-75Hz. And if I suddenly add another finger the value jumps up to around 2********Hz... just as if the readings from the digitizer would be messed up.
There is something strange about ICS for sure.
Yeah it does sound like it. I never thought to run any tests between the two since it never affected my experience. But as for refresh rate, or GPU performance, I notice sometimes the screen will flicker when doing certain actions like when opening the multi-task window or any window that 'hovers' above the current screen.

Google Maps vs Waze?

Which do you guys prefer? What gives you better routes for you?
Google map ???
Thoughts on why?
I am planning to install an 8in tablet in my car primarily for Navigation.
Thus I also needed to figure out if I wanted to use Google Maps or Waze.
Also, if I want to use Portrait or Landscape.
I normally use Google Maps on my phone and I tried out Waze this week so I'll give the Pro's and Con's to switch to Waze
= Accuracy of directions is about the same but Google Maps seems slightly better so far.
+ Shows police, speed traps, hazards
+ Speed limit icon (kinda useful)
+ Looks nicer in landscape mode with route to the right
- New UI to learn, but its not that confusing
- No Google integration (doesnt pull up google maps search results from your laptop)
- Waze has "ads", pins for places you dont care about
- Generally more cluttered
- No Android Auto integration YET (Does integrate with a headset)
- Smart zoom in Google Maps is better (zooms in more on intersection)
- Does not show next next turn. (If I have two turns one right after another coming, Google Maps tells me so I know what lane to get into.)
- Does not show which lane for exits
- Does not show traffic clearly on map or in alternate routes
- Takes two button presses to show alternate routes or exit
- No easy way to zoom out (see below)
If I don't have a turn for an hour or 60mi or so, the screen becomes pretty useless. Especially when I'm out in the country, it is basically just a vertical line. My old GPS unit had smart zoom based on how far your next turn was. It would zoom all the way out to a North up top down view showing either your entire route or to the next turn. That way it gives you a quick indicator of where you are and how far along you are. If you were zoomed in, that you have no quick way of knowing that. When you approach a turn, it automatically would zoom back in. In google maps, the fastest way is for me to hit the alternate routes button. It still retails to top banner telling me how far my next turn is. It also shows how duration, distance, and time of arrival. Alternatively, I can hit some buttons and zoom out manually. In Waze, I can also hit Routes. It gives me the zoomed out map but the next turn info is gone. It does show distance and duration left, but it doesnt update if you stay on the screen. I also lose indication of police activity which is the main draw of the app for me. In waze, I can manually zoom out, but after a few seconds, it automatically zooms back in. As you can see, this is a big annoyance of mine
Portrait vs Landscape:
- With Landscape you can typically see more map than Portrait because you can see the sides. Helpful for multi-turns
- With portrait you can see ahead more clearly. The same amount is shown in landscape but since the screen height is physically smaller, everything will appear smaller.
- Landscape "fits" in my car better. Portrait would cause it to stick up above my dash slightly.
- More room for info in portrait mode (if put on the sides) For alt. routes, Waze shows map on left and options on right. Maps/Android Auto does this on some cars but not on phone.
So overall, I'm leaning towards google maps. Maybe because I'm just use to it, maybe because I use it for public transit too. It just seems cleaner and more mature. If Google Maps added the police/speed trap/construction alerts, then there would be no question.

Harry Potter Wizads Unite OnePlus 7 Pro GPS issue

Hello all.
first of all I would like to make sure is this problem is only on my device. What kind of problem? My character is not accurately following my movements. When I walk slowly it is almost ok but sometimes it is auto rotating in wrong direction as I was walking from side point of view. When I am in the buss it is going totally crazy. When bus speeds up screen stops moving as I was standing and sometimes refreshes in different place than I am at the moment. GPS status app shows no problem with connection to satellites and car navigation on google maps works very well. One thing that I have noticed is that when I left the bus and started Google Maps it pointed bad my localisation(200 - 300 meters away from my real position)
I have turned on localisation and all rights are given to both Harry an GMaps. Wifi scanning in localisation menu is also turned on.
Any ideas?
It seemed to be tracking me okay, but when I get to the point where it uses the camera it crashes.
Are you on the 9.5.8 update? I don't play that game, but have been seeing some odd GPS activity in Strava and Google Maps since I took the last update.
I have the same problem with Harry Potter but it seems to work well with Pokémon. Maybe the problem is from the game ?
