Question on Wifi at the house - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Wanting to use a "hotspot' and my house to save on data..( I have 4gb a month).. Do I need to just get a wireless router?... I have Comcast for internet/tv...... Really don't wont to tether having to plug into my computer.. want the "freedom"... Is this possible?

Wireless router should be the only thing you need.

using g2x to bridge wifi (is it possible)

is it possible to use this phone to bridge my neighbors wifi signal in to my house?i have his permission to use it.in fact i put the router in his house and give him ten bucks a month.i can only pick up his wifi in my daughters room and garage.any apps or anything?
If you mean you want to have WiFi data in AND WiFi tethering out, no its not possible. As far as I understand it, WiFi tethering essentially turns your WiFi receiver into a transmitter, and both can not be active at the same time.
You could just get a range extender and put it in your garage or your daughters room, that would boost the signal in your house
Personally I've never liked those range extenders. While there is no way that I'm aware of to do it with the g2x, it can easily be done with a few pieces of network equipment. Get yourself a wireless ethernet bridge, and put it in your daughter's room. Connect it to the wireless network, and plug a wireless access point into the bridge.
Not a cheap or elegant solution, but it should definitely work.

yeah i was just looking to do a free-be way if it was possible.i know about the range extenders but never thought about your idea..why dont you like wireless bridges/range extenders?
I don't like them either but its a simple solution, I've tried them before and they seem to lose connection randomly.
Now I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think you could do this with a wireless router running custom firmware (DD-WRT).
Wireless router picks up the signal and bounces it back out. Maybe it's worth looking into

maybe if you have a usb wifi adapter set up a ad hoc connection then go back to network and sharing click on adapter settings then sharing and shared it with the usb wifi adapter thats one way to doing it

Yes you can definitely do that, there are tons of "how 2'a" for this on the Web...

yeah im going to look in to this.im not sure if i have the right router but i have a couple of old ones laying around here.also gonna check in to that usb adapter idea one of the other guys suggested.thanks all.

In theory.... Tethering question

So my house doesn't have very good 4G signal.... I have to FORCE 4G and either be outside or top of a window. That being said, I want to find a spot with 4G and leave my phone there.
Is it possible to connect to a router to extend the wifi signal? Or should I get a long usb cable for tether? Any tips on getting a better signal? Thanks!
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
It is "possible" is it real feasible?? not really.... It would still require a long usb cable a computer and a router... You would need to USB tether the internet to a computer than bridge that connection the the ethernet port on the computer then run that ethernet to the input of a router... Like I said not real practical.. Look into a Signal repeater... They are a little pricey but work really well in most cases...
Something like this, http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wireless/ss/wirelessgear_7.htm , would be your only wireless option. Like dr12volt said tho, it's around 100 bucks for something like that.
Also(taken from above website):
However, due to the nature of this technology, most wireless range extenders work only with a limited set of other equipment. Check the manufacturer's specifications carefully for compatibility information.

[Q] Nexus 5 and USB-Ethernet

Is the Nexus 5 able to connect to ethernet via some USB-RJ45 adapter without any tweaking like Nexus 7 and so? or otherwise it needs some minor tweeks? or its totally impossible to get ethernet connection in this phone without HUGE changes?
Thank you in advance.
Anyone?

I'm just curious, and please don't take this as a troll, but why would you want or need to? Smartphones are designed as wireless devices.

I just tried it and no go. I did get it working on my N7, but I'm not sure at this point if a similar tweak will get it going on the n5 or not.

probably because the kernel for n5 doesn't have the driver module, while n7 kernel has it?
have a usb 3.0 ethernet dongle and Y cable... will try it, and maybe compile and modprobe the module if necessary
EDIT: /proc/kmsg recognises my device as a ax88179 usb 3.0 ethernet chip when connected, but that's about it for now... no lights flashing on the NIC (I am using a powered USB Y cable, so it should be working), no ifconfig/network changes

+1 im actually surprised that theres such a thing as microusb to ethernet.
I actually got a microusb to 10/100 ethernet adapter to try this. To answer a previous question, sometimes when traveling hotel wifi is awful or spotty but they have a serviceable ethernet port. Wifi hotspot from cellular on roaming data is unacceptably expensive and there's no wifi mirroring support that I know of that would let you find a spot in a room with a Wifi signal and mirror it to the rest of the room. So if you can connect the phone by ethernet as in internet source then share that through wifi or bluetooth hotspot you have a convenient mini router in your phone.
In any case, when I tried it the adapter seems to get power, it lights up and the light flashes when I connect it to my network but if I disable the wireless radios on the phone it gets no internet access. Are there drivers we can install that would enable this?

Why not? Just in case of hotels with no wifi or other strange situations. If you travel a lot, you will find them, and ethernet is everywhere.. wifi isn't.

Yeah, I got it to work stock on the nexus 7 (I think its because Asus puts the drivers for all their tablets) and it doesn't work on nexus 5.. damn.

As I said to the other guy, ethernet is everywhere, wifi isn't. If you traveled a lot you'd know :good:.

gingerneil says he's got the n5 with ethernet working!! :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
I'm really sorry about reviving this super duper old thread, but this is the first Google result for "nexus 5 ethernet" (without quotes). I just want to report that on my Android M developer preview Nexus 5, ethernet does indeed work out of the box without needing root. I suspect it should also work in Lollipop but I haven't tested it (supposedly ethernet on the Nexus 5 was added then).
You can see in that image my phone accessing my router's admin page, which is blocked on WiFi and is only accessible over ethernet.
I'm using this microusb to ethernet adapter:

I'm glad you did revive the thread. I just plugged the "pluggable" brand micro usb to ethernet adapter that I've used with a Nexus Player successfully into my Nexus 5 on M preview 2. It works. It shows a little ethernet status icon in the status bar. However, there doesn't seem to be any way to customize the settings. Like switch it from DHCP to a fixed address. Any idea if that's possible??
As a side note, plugging in the Chromecast ethernet/power combo into the Nexus 5 will charge, but is not recognized as an ethernet network.
Ethernet in nexus5
Hi friends, I hv Nexus 5 with marshmallow. The USB Ethernet works in office but not in my home. Net is working in home. Any suggestions? Thank you

The kernel has to support charging in USB host mode I would suggest. I want to get Google's "Ethernet Adapter for Chromecast" to work on my Nexus 7 2013: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ne.../googles-ethernet-adapter-chromecast-t3547827

[Q] Doubts about connecting HDD to router with USB port

Hi everyone,
This is my first post. First of all I'd like to thank XDA family for all the support. This is a big learning website for many of us.
Now talking about the problem which I have..
Well I am planning to change my router and get another one with a USB port so that I can attach a HDD to it.
I want to know few things before I go for it..
What things should I keep in mind before buying a router with USB port and if someone can recommend me some good and cheap routers.
I want to know how to browse files on HDD thru my android device(4.2.1), if I can only read the files or read and write both.
And if it is ok to use a 2.0 HDD with the router.
Also I would like to mention here that the HDD won't be connected to the router 24x7. I'd be connecting it only when required because I read somewhere that there are some heating issues if the HDD is connected for a longer period of time.
It be helpful if someone having same setup could share the experience and dos n don'ts.
Thank you.

First of all what is your internet connection, is it cable/fiber optic or ADSL
If it's ADSL then the TP-Link AC1750 is a great choice as it's under £100 and from my personal knowledge supports and external HDD (Tested with 500GB 2.5inch HDD in a caddy. It will also supposedly support cable router connection via ethernet.
If thats too much then the lower spec version here (TL-WR1043ND) is also good but it doesn't support AC WiFi.
With the above routers you can set the HDD/Pen drive to network storage in the admin settings and I personally own one and think they're great budget devices.
Other than that if they aren't what you're looking for just make sure the routers output enough power through the USB 2/3 port and a recognise portable HDDs in order to suply the correct power output.
Also I've had my HDD connected for over a day and haven't had any heating issues but I guess it depends on the quality of the HDD/Caddy
Hope I could help

To access the files on Android you need to set them as network storage like on a Windows PC, you can do this through apps like Droid NAS.
Also AC WiFi is the latest, fastest WiFi connection like 802.11 b/g/n. You need an AC adapter to get the full speeds but it is well worth it and it's compatible with older devices like 802.11 b/g/n

[Completed] Help with travel router in automobile.

I'm not sure where to ask this question so I thought I'd start here.
I have a HooToo Tripmate Nano travel router installed in my car with a 128gb usb stick containing a/v content. It works great. Everyone can connect and watch/listen to whatever is on the usb stick. My problem is that the HooToo doesn't allow connections to my cell phone hotspot so we have to disconnect from the HooToo and connect to the hotspot whenever we want to surf the internet. I want the HooToo to be able to connect to the hotspot so everyone can surf the internet through the HooToo.
I have looked at the TP_Link 700 series of portable routers but haven't found one that I can connect a usb stick to that will do what the HooToo is doing as well as connect to the hotspot. If there is one, I wouldn't be worried about being able to power it since I could bypyss the ac and connect 5 or 12 volts straight to the pcb.
Does anyone have any ideas or help for me with this project?
Thank you.
