Simple Request to OTA 2.3.6 users.... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Can those who did the OTA 2.3.6 update please do this simple test/observation: when your battery level drops to 10% and below, go into Menu.... Settings.... Display.... Brightness.... and report back if your "Brightness" option is greyed-out. There have been a few users (including myself) who cannot change Brightness once battery drops below 10%, and then the screen brightness goes full bright. You have to plug into power source (USB or AC) to be able to change Brightness or get level about 10% to change Brightness. Again, any user who did the OTA 2.3.6 update, please report back here if you have this condition. Would like to understand if it's a 2.3.6 bug, or a problem occurred during OTA update. THX!

Yes it is a 2.3.6 bug i let mine get below 10% and have the same issue. Screen is on full brightness, and brightness is grayd out look at attachd photos

Thanks for confirming... So, this appears to be a genuine Skyrocket i727 2.3.6 bug (i.e., not a feature). Who should be contacted: AT&T, Samsung, or both? Anyone have the appropriate contact info for AT&T or Samsung for OTA bugs?

Hold on a minute .. this isn't just the OTA 2.3.6 .. I'm still stock 2.3.5 .. had my phone now 2 days, have not received any OTA's to bring it up to the 2.3.6.
Now, as for your bug .. I also experience the same issue. Like I do with all my phones, when I first purchase and turn on, I do not plug in until my battery is 100% dead // observation .. at 10%, my Brightness was also greyed out.
So, this is not anything to do with the OTA at all .. its in 2.3.5 also.

This happens to me all the time on 2.3.5...

My guess is that there is a built in "power saving" mode for when the battery drops below 10%. I have noticed that if I'm using the phone while it drops to 10% that the screen will actually dim but if I put it to sleep and then wake it back up, the screen will be full brightness again. It also happens when it drops to 5% during use.
If there was one thing I missed about the Atrix was the "power saving" options, this is something that needs to be addressed by both AT&T and Samsung. I'm also assuming that there was actually supposed to be a fix for this in the 2.3.6 update but since it did not work they halted the rollout. Of course, these are just my presumptions.

At 69% and not greyed out on 2.3.6.
The power saving feature is enabled and kicks in at 30%.

The issue is being reported at 10% or below. Also, it seems it is not contingent on the "power saving mode", whereas, it does not matter if someone has the feature turned on or not, it just happens when it gets low enough.

EXACTLY! I have the power savings mode turned OFF and at 10% power, the Brightness functionality greys itself out... and screen goes to full brightness.

May be you can report it here! It goes to Samsung directly!

I let my battery get down below 10% and same here brightness is greyed out (2.3.5)...but u still can adjust brightness by holding finger at the top of the screen then moving your finger left (darker) or right (brighter)...

POSSIBLE FIX: Solution to high Android System usage on GB ROMS

THANKS TO MILH0U5E, From the Evo 4g forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1006809
Basically go to Menu > Settings > Privacy and turn off "Backup to Google".....
SUMMARY:
I've been enjoying the different aosp gingerbread roms from echoside, savage team, and evokings... they each run really well and stand apart from each other.
But one thing that I have been unable to shake is the high percentage of Android System running. Its always upwards of 60% or higher, unless the phone is in airplane mode.
I think I found the culprit in this issue... I turned off backing up to Google services, and wham! No more high Android System usage. It hasn't been a full day yet, but I usually notice it by mid morning.
Just thought I'd throw this out there for you GB fans.

I did it, will see if it changes anything today. I charge overnight, run on battery all day, and have my tablet set to never sleep. I see an idle drain of about 1-2% per hour with it not deep sleeping (wifi on, screen off) so it should be interesting to compare.
Reading the entire thread he linked to, I'm not sure this does much of anything... we'll see!

So far, no appreciable change in standby power drain. Can't hurt, seems unnecessary, but unlikely to be a positive impact unless you happen to get stuck spinning on some backup process.

Now, THIS is freakin' amazing!

I have a simple question: What is the biggest battery drain on your SamChg?
I'll bet that almost everybody out there though the same thing I did: "That gorgeous Samsung Super AMOLED(TM) display", right?
I mean, whenever I check the Android Battery Use tool, nothing even comes close: Usually, 78%+ of the power is going to the display.
So, if the SamChg batteries are so bad, and the display is sucking the battery the most, how long do you think the SamChg would last before dying if the SamChg had the display on full-time without turning off (Using StayAwake)? 1 hour? 2 hours? 3 hours?
How about: 8 1/2 hours!
I've done it with 2 different stock 1600 mA battery packs now. I've use the phone lightly during those times, so the phone wasn't totally idle (maybe longer life is possible?)
I've read that Samsung had really improved the power drain characteristics of the Super AMOLED displays, and now I believe it.
It also indicates to me that I probably won't gain much extra battery life from turning the display brightness down. I will keep it set on Auto Brightness now.
FYI - Right now, about an hour or so before the battery dies again, I am at: Display = 91%, sensorserver_ya = 5%, Android System = 1%.
I am suspecting the biggest drain I see during my work day is the switching between 1xRTT / 3G (and now, 4G networks) / No Signal - Which is a big battery drain problem I saw in the past.
Your thoughts?
I do know the battery use app in FroYo is pretty inaccurate compared to Gingerbread. It seems it throws any battery usage into the display row if its unable to determine where it really comes from.
For example, if you stream pandora all day with the screen turned off, most of your battery usage will show up as Display. Once I upgraded my DX to ginger, the same activity on my phone would have a much larger percentage of usage going to Pandora and media server, or whatever its called, and hardly any going to the display.... which is correct.
So if you use that app, take all that info for what its worth, until we get Gingerbread.

That's great to hear, I'll have to give that a shot sometime. I will say that you are still better off with lower brightnesses, even though we don't have a backlight its still gonna use exponentially more power the brighter you go. But I wouldn't leave auto-brightness on, while the changing brightnesses don't hurt battery that much, the sensor to change them does, as its constantly polled. You'll see the sensor_server taking up a good bit of life.
Keep it on manual brightness, and just adjust it by holding your finger on the notification bar for a sec, the farther to right your finger is, the brighter it is. If you hold it you can also swipe back and forth to turn brightness up or down.

Didn't know that trick! Maybe I should read the manual one day.
My thanks to you!
Woah, that is an awesome trick! I have never even heard of that before.
Schweet! Thanks! That is a great trick. Another thing that I've been doing that has helped my battery make it through the day longer is turning off my mobile data. It only takes a second to turn it on when I'm browsing or using an app that requires the data.
Yeah, turn off data when you don't expect to use it for a while. Get a 4G/3G widget to switch between LTE and CDMA when you are constantly in a fringe 4G area and/or in an area thats 3G only. And I like the idea of the auto brightness thing. Froyo has had that brightness status bar trick since its been out. I used it a lot on my Fascinate. With 4G on constantly my phone drains 5% per hour doing very little. Its half that with 3G only or data off.

Just grab LTE Switch form the Market. Put and icon on one of your desktop pages and it takes you right to the LTE / 3G Settings menu o you can switch it. IE no go threw all the menus to get at it.
Also remember the screen only uses power when displaying white or color pixels. Black does not use power.

"Android OS" is top battery consumer after night

Hell,
After 13 hours on battery, "Android OS" is top battery consumer on my Gingerbread device. I understand there is some kind of bug in Gingerbread causing this behavior, but I already pulled battery out and put back in before. Am I supposed to do it every reboot, or how do I fix this annoyance?

Which Gingerbread variant? There are unfortunately multiple causes for this and it can be a ***** to debug. I had it happen for a few days with CM7, but I think it may have been a side effect of the Bluetooth fix breaking GPS, making anything layered over GPS unhappy.
Apparently for some people it's caused by a corrupt SD card that causes mediascanner to go nuts, and on the Nexus S it was caused by people setting Wifi Sleep Policy to "screen turned off" - yes, setting it to "never" would actually save you battery. But at least on CM7, setting wifi sleep policy to "screen turned off" is OK.

Try setting "WiFi sleep policy" to "Never" and then turn off wifi.
Yes - it seems weird but according to some of the Nexus S reports, even with wifi off the sleep policy mattered.
NOTE: This may do absolutely nothing. As I said, there are multiple things that could cause this. But there have been a lot of reports of wifi causing battery drain on Infused v2.
My WiFi sleep policy is already "Never" but WiFi is on the whole night. Since it's both saves data and battery according to reports.
I have this problem occasionally and it is always fixed (until it comes back :/) by a simple reboot. I'm pretty sure it's the same problem detailed here that GS2 users had and was eventually fixed by some unknown code change from Samsung.
Basically we just need to hope that when ATT releases GB for Infuse it will have the fix in it.
my problem on infused v2.0.4 is that my cell standby eats up most of my battery... about 35% when i got out of school. is there any way to fix this?

I understand where your coming from, but from any cell phone standpoint 13 hours off the charger and 50% battery left is great! You are on track to Running that battery for over 24 hours, and I don't care what phone you have that's impressive. I have run 2.0 - 2.0.4 and the difference from stock is amazing going From only making it 15 hours and needing to charge now I can make it over a day easy.

Sometimes various sensors like rotation too contribute to the time android system takes up.

P6210 - Huge Battery Drain on ICS

Anyone experiencing battery drain on ICS? I upgraded, rooted, and removed some of the bloatware to help. Thought it was fixed but my tab is dead again. Says the Android OS is taking up my juice. Was never a problem before. Could leave it on standby for days with HC. Now its dead in a day or less.

I initially saw similar behavior, but once I killed the cached processes once, and since have shut down to charge and started new, I haven't seen that behavior.
Do you have WiFi on? Could it be you have apps that are checking to be updated? I know in the past on my phone my Amazon Appstore has a habit of starting itself up and continually checking for updates for itself and for any apps I got from Amazon.
Tried it both ways...wifi on and off.
Try using CPU spy (free in market) or betterbatterystats (free- search for it here on XDA) to see what is eating up your battery exactly.

I noticed that I had a conflict between "Power Savings" settings and the "Display" settings. Putting them both at 1 minute resulted in an always on screen I had to disable the Power Savings to correct the problem.
I did have something odd happen yesterday that seems to have kept my screen on for 4 hours. When I got home and opened my case the tab was very warm, and shut off. And all but entirely out of power, before that it has used about 10 % in 17 hours of standby with about an hour of use, or so.
I think it is possible that an app that previously didn't keep the screen on is now for some reason keeping it on, and I didn't notice when I closed the leather cover.
No issues today, but I am going to try and see if I can find some release notes to tell me about the new download for ICS for the P6210, perhaps this is addressed?
Just to update I installed the betterbatterystats. I showed a couple of things that were keeping my tab awake. Once I fixed those I thought that would be it but it was still draining. I then installed juice defender and had it turn wifi off every time I turned the screen off. That did it. Was never like this before the update but at least its good to know I fixed it.
i suggest checking better battery stats for AudioOut_1 Partial Wakelock. its been draining my phone fast when i upgraded to ICS.
check it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629346
now my battery is working great.. i just left my tab for 10 hrs in the locker when i got the tab its still have 97% battery.
for me i just checked and changed my wifi sleep policy from never to when screen turns off and its fine now. :highfive:
I thought about this very issue; I decided to wait.

The version is OFFICIAL .
It's just available only for some countries.
i had the huge battery drain issue while in stock ICS..
the tablet simply refused point blank to go into deep sleep.. in HC it would but not in ICS.. i would take the tablet fully charged to work and not use it much there.. by the time i was travelling back it would be 60% drained in not using it througout the day...
recently flashed to aorths CM9 build and all my battery woes are gone.. now when i get back from work the battery is at 96%!!
battery drain during usage is the same but the CM9 build has awesome battery conservation stuffs for when you dont use it..
would suggest everyone who has these battery issues to move to CM9.. really helped for me.

Early results show Juice Defender is helping a lot with mine too. Thanks for the tip!
Next morning: Just the free version of Juice Defender using the default profile took me from 35% overnight drain yesterday down to 3% overnight drain today. That's not bad. It should be even better tomorrow because I've turned off all location services after seeing that BetterBatteryStats says Google location is the worst single offender at keeping wifi going overnight.

I had the same exact problem ever since the stock ICS update. My Tab Plus is all stock, no mods at all. The battery would completely drain after one day, and I have very little on the Tab Plus. Nothing helped at all, so I finally bit and did a factory wipe. The battery drain stopped immediately, so I started changing the settings back to the way I like it.
Then, next day the battery went completely dead again! I back tracked and figured out exactly what it is which makes absolutely NO SENSE - turning off wifi in sleep was what was draining the battery! See my screen captures. Notice on the first screen shot, as soon as the wifi stays on the battery drop bar stayed almost flat.
I observed a similar behavior on my 100% stock AT&T GS3 phone also, turning wifi off during sleep causes more battery drain.
I'm getting "suspend backoff" under kernel wakelocks which is preventing my tab going to deep sleep when unused. Everytime I wakeup in the morning my tab is dead. The only solution I found was to turn off wifi if I'm not using it. Anyway fixing this?

[Q] Lightflow app Battery Drain

Anyone experiencing excessive battery drain for the paid version of Lightflow? I love this app, but after checking betterbatterystats, i realize that it forces my device to be awake all the time thus drains the battery faster.
I am using the Canadian Rogers RAZR HD rooted but on stock OS.
Now that you mention it, I too wonder if light flow is responsible for excessive battery drain on my RAZR Maxx HD. Before I installed it I was getting over 36 whores of use. Now I am only getting about 14. It isn't accounted for in battery stats so I am going to uninstall top see if it lakes a difference.

What sort of drain are you looking at? The app will cause a lot of wake locks that'll show in better battery status, but it's fairly normal for the app. The reason for this, is that every time the notification changes color, some code has to run to change it. To run in the phone needs to be in a partial wake state. If you find the phone showing as awake in the standard android battery graph then something doesn't sound right. Let me know and I'll try identify any issues or suggest changes in settings.
Seems OK to me, most of my wake locks are just exchange or stock ROM stuff.

Any news about LED while screen is on?
yeah it does drain excessive battery
i do confirm that since i installed light flow the phone just drains the battery , i got 9 hours of normal use instead of 20+ of average use .
good thing that you brought this up and confirmed my theory . i have RAZR MAXX HD ad proud of it

In the standard battery graph, it does show lightflow as being awake for almost the entire time the phone is on (even during screen off). My device almost never sleeps. I can grab screenshots of any screens you request if this helps.
This is why I love the app, the developer cares enough to try and make a difference. I am definitely hoping I can fix this because the functionality of this app is fantastic!

It's always an odd one to try and track down, but there are a few things to try.
If at all possible is it possible to see if there's a particular notification type that it starts happening after (ie get a notification, view/clear it and see when it's not sleeping). It may happen for all notifications or it may just be a particular type - any info on this is certainly useful.
Then when you have no outstanding notifications and are getting the phone to be awake all the time go into lightflow->tools->logging and select "file logging". Then press your phones "home" key.
Leave your phone idle with the screen off to approx 10 minutes. Confirm that the phone stayed in an awake state. If it did then go into lightflow->tools->logging and select "no logging". Then go into the contact us section and e-mail me. The log will automatically get attached.
Info such as custom roms, non stock apps (such a handcent) that you've used can also be useful, so drop a note in the e-mail about the tests you've done. Hopefully there's something I can then track down.
