I'm not sure but I assume if it's stock then you should be able to get GB. It's not OTA, though, you have to use Kies Mini to get it. If you want to do it yourself, though, Raver posted an ODIN version of stock KJ6 in the Dev section.

Even if it was unlocked, it can receive OTA updates. i had KB5 and my phone was unlocked and it wanted to upgrade to kd1 over the air. as stephen said, 2.3.6 is only through kies, though.

Gingerbread is not OTA. You will have to use kies or have clockwork recovery installed and do it that way.
If you are staying stock use kies. How tos for both options are in the development section.

JI6 to Stock JH7

I flashed FROYO.UCJI6 (i know this is an old ROM received back in october 2010 with some bugs!) using odin one flash method on my samsung captivate which was running JH7 firmware (which I upgraded from at&t out-of-the-box firmware JF6 through samsung kies program). Now, I am planning to downgrade my phone from FROYO.UCJI6 to 2.1 JF6 (i found the 2.1 JF6 firmware executable file online somewhere) through the same odin one flash method. My questions are:
1. After I downgrade from FROYO.UCJI6 to 2.1 JF6 using odin one flash method, can I upgrade it to 2.1 JH7 through samsung kies mini (the latest kies mini program on my windows 7 64 bit computer?
2. After I upgrade to 2.1 JH7, will I be able to upgrade to 2.2 FROYO if that ever becomes available for samsung captivate?
My current 2.2 is way better than that ECLAIR 2.1 JH7 but it is still not official and contains bugs that are annoying sometimes. Can anyone please guide me on this? I am new to the world of xda and I appreciate any help. I am also very new to the world of this whole ROM flashing thing and I consider myself an amateur at best. PLEASE HELP.
Regards,
Antony

The answer is YES. You can keep using Kies Mini to upgrade to the official 2.2 when it is released. I'd stay away from OTA upgrade. And Kies Mini will be faster way to do it anyway since you don't have to wait for your turn from OTA.
If you are willing to flash leaked froyo, why not try a custom rom. Most are already better then what the official froyo release will be, if it ever comes
I'm thinking of rolling back as well. Mainly because I could never get the market fixed with the leaked 2.2. There's a ton of apps I have to side load from my wifes Captivate and it's getting tiresome. Plus my battery life is atrocious with leaked 2.2.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Have one more dumb question. Can I upgrade straight from JF6 to 2.2 through kies? Or do I need to have JH7? I thought any version lower than 2.2 would do. If I am correct then I can keep working with the released froyo and switch to JF6 on the day samsung/at&t release an official froyo update. Please confirm my understanding. Thanks once again

correct ... you always have the option to Odin back to stock ... just download odin and keep it somewhere safe on your computer for a rainy day

Thank you. I will if I don't get to receive an official froyo in a month (an official release is possible given the recent update of kies mini) Now that I have taste for unofficial stuff, if I don't like the official froyo then I will try all the custom ROMs out there.

Thank you for confirming that I can update straight from JF6 to FROYO when / if it becomes officially available to users.

[Q] ODIN and ATT update - what is this?

I was using a custom ROM. In order to upgrade the rom, I used one click odin to restore stock. Then I did a master clear and checked the version of the kernel SW:
Firmware 2.1 -update1
Baseband I897UCJF6
Kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Build ECLAIR
This was all expected. Then I checked software update. To my suprise, it said there is a software update. I decided to get the update. It downloaded it, and in the process of installation, it failed exactly at 50% mark. I tried it several time, all with the same result.
Now, the question is what is this update? and why is it failing?
Can someone check their never altered stock captivate if the SW/firmvare/kernel version I listed above match with your captivate.
Thanks
It's been said that once you flash using Odin, even though its Samsung stock, that it will not, or not likely to, update properly.
Its jh7 update
will fail everytime

Did you try an OTA update or did you try to update with Kies Mini? The update that AT&T is sending you is JH7.
If u want jh7 u can still install via kies or cwm zip

I tried an ATT update. Previous post mentioned that it will always fail. It seems Odin is not returning the phone to full stock state. Not that I plan to go to stock ATT att the moment, but is it even possible now to go to stock ATT, with enabled updates?
Or using custom roms is a one way street, that we will never be able to go to full stock with succesful updates from ATT?
2.2 will be via kies and I suspect any further updatea will be as well

Just use Kies Mini...
Kies-Mini
Download Kies-Mini
Install it on your computer
Start Kies-Mini
Make sure your phone is set for USB-Debugging
Hook USB cable to phone
Hook other end to your computer
Kies should see your phone
If Kies can see your phone, UPDATE it to JH7
After Kies is finished updating your phone will be @ True Stock
If that dosen't work get OTA JH7

It is full stock but those OTA updates only work if its being pushed any new captivates will already have the jh7 so att isn't pushing it anymore. Your phone knows its out of date but it can't get the full package anymore

It's jh7, I don't think 2.2 will be out soon. I was at at&t device support center today. I talked to one of the reps about most problematic phone they have met and we talked about captivate a little bit. He said google released it really early and samsung finished their revise really quick, its just att can't take such a huge amount of data transfer at one time. And att is building up 4g network, less attention will be put on 3g than before.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You should just stick with custom rom's. The updates you are trying to get are already on 90% of the custom roms and the custom roms have alot more advantages with barley any disadvantages.
The only reason I look forward to the 2.2 release is so we have captivate specific source for froyo I will never again have a stock captivate even if they give us gingerbread next week

All three of ours failed the first time they pushed it and my brother just got a captivate from best buy a few weeks ago with jf6 on it so at that time there were still some old builds floating around.

[Q] Unrooting

Hey Guys
Just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE on the Rogers network. Just wondering when the Rogers ICS update comes out tin the new year will this re root my phone?
No one knows. Yet. The oneclicks i have a feeling will not work on 4.0 they dont on 2.3.6 so you may have to wait until 4.0 hits and is posted into a rooted rom. Which im sure will happen within hours of the ota happening

as Silver says, no one can say today if you'll lose current root when ICS rolls out... however, I was rooted on 2.3.5 (with stock 3e recovery) and after I took the ATT OTA 2.3.6 update, I didn't lose root.
Historically however, you would lose the root correct?
Also, if my phone remains rooted after the Rogers update to ICS. Will it function ok on a rooted phone?
Thanks

"Historically" I didnt lose root when I took the ATT OTA 2.3.6 update (when I was on 2.3.5). All my rooted apps worked perfectly after OTA update as I still had superuser permission. Rooting just gives you more permission.

[Q] If i Root now 2.3.6, can I get carrier update ICS?

Just got upgrade from Captivate to SGS2 Skyrocket and itching to root, but heard ICS is coming from carrier soon (whenever that is), will I still be able to get the update OTA? or will I need to unroot and then try OTA update? or do I use the Keis on PC.
You would have to unroot and restore the stock rom before you could get the carrier update. I am going to probably root my i727R Rogers just because the carrier update will come with so much bloatware and still have the touch wiz on it

...don't you just Root again and remove bloatware? How will I know carrier is ready to update me unless I UN root.
As far as i know if your just stock rooted then you will see the update and just lose root if you do update. Release dates will depend on version. You can always check the forums to see if a stock ics (no leak) has come. It will be plastered everywhere. If your on custom rom then again just check the forum, go back to stock, update, and done.

When I was on Nexus S , the ICS 4.0.3 OTA was around 128mb size (sure skyrocket ICS would be bigger), which is big file size for an OTA (I installed it using fastboot and CWM recovery) so when it will come for the skyrocket it would be difficult to do from just the phone itself...

I have the same problem running the rogers ics rom and can't update to rogers jb.
Do i have to have stock recovery or do i have to update keis to 2.5.2.13021_10?
If a stock recovery is the issue, is there a flashable zip of stock recovery :3
You need a stock recovery for kies to update yes. Sometimes to get it to recognize you need to have kies troubleshoot drivers.
