Hello all. I have a Tmobile Samsung Vibrant, and a few weeks ago I went to use the camera and got a camera failed message. I rebooted and it was fine, for a day then got the message again. I ended up buying a replacement camera, installed it. Camera worked for a few days then I got that message again. Someone in the vibrant section suggested using odin and flashing to stock. reluctantly I did, and my camera worked fine, for a few days. Then, you guessed it I got the camera fail message. Does anyone know of anything I could try? Is there something else in the phone that could be causing this? Sorry for the long post. Thanks Gregg
might be a hardware problem...
OK. Any idea if or anything I could replace?
bumptiy bump for some help.

I am experiencing a very annoying problem with my Samsung Google Nexus S GT-i9023 (pearl white). Everything works fine except the NFC chip.
Every time, I try to turn on the NFC chip in the wireless menu, immediately the message "An error occurred" appears. So the NFC chip won`t turn on at all. No reboot, stock recovery (wipe internal storage etc.) could solve the issue.
Background information:
My Nexus S is 3 days old. It came out of the box with Android 2.3.3. I updated immediately after the first boot to 2.3.4 via OTA! I didn't check it with 2.3.3. Around the net are a lot of people experiencing the same(!) problem. No matter if it is a i9020 or a i9023. Also some people say, that it worked before with 2.3.3 and after updating to 2.3.4 NFC stopped working. I not able to verify this information.
Well meanwhile my Nexus S is at Samsung Germany service partner, called Bitronic Service Line. The guys called me some days ago, to inform me, that they don't know how to fix it. The placed an issue at Samsung Germany itself, so Bitronic is awaiting now reply from Samsung.
My question to xda-developers forum users:
Are you invovled in such a problem? Do you know a working fix? Probably sb. heard something about a defective production lot or maybe about udapting problems via OTA?
By the way, for more information, my and other Nexus S users story, can be read in the android forum. Just search via google for "Nexus S NFC error". It is issue nb. 13581. Sry but since I have only a few posts, the board rules does not allow me to post external links. Sry for that.
Attached a screenshot of the error msg.
Thx for information or any help.
Regards.
Same problem here. Sent my nexus s i9023 also to bitronic germany a week ago. Still waiting for a reply.
I tried alot ROM's (cyanogen, MIUI, nscolab etc.) and kernel's. Nothing helped. So I think this is a hardware problem.
According to a callback of Bitronic (Samsung Germany's contractual Service Partner), my problem could be identified as an hardware bug. They told me, that they replaced a specific part. Which exactly, I don't know.
I´ll get my phone back in around 2-3 days. Then I will post an final statement.
just got my nexus s back. everything is working properly again, so it was definitely a hw bug. From my side the problem is solved.
If someone is experiencing further problems with de- and activating the NFC chip, keep going on with reporting here.
Cool story bro.
Just kidding. Sending it out and getting it back in 2 days is pretty great turnaround. Sounds like quality service. Glad it got sorted.
Got my SNS back today. NFC is now working. Seems so that samsung has found the bug.
Just got this phone a few weeks ago. Running all stock latest software and my camera consistently fails to start up and just goes to a "camera failed" error message. Most of the time if I clear data it loads but I think I have a faulty phone. I even did a factory wipe and the problem persisted. Anyone else have this problem with the skyrocket? If I cant fix this on my own soon ill have at&t send me a new one.
Thanks
get a new one. haven't heard of this issue before.
In one of the other threads about this it took formatting the sd cards
This has happened to me on a few Roms
In those cases I had to do a full wipe and reflash

Did you solve the problem? Just got one myself and have encountered the same issue. Looking for reliable solutions...or confirmation that I need to have it replaced. Thanks.
It happened to me about a week ago. What I did to solve it was to go into settings/applications/manage apps then look for the camera apk and clear data/force stop. After that it went back to normal.

I tried that but it didn't work. Replaced it and all is well. Thanks.

Definitely go back for a replacement if wiping SD card, stopping and wiping Camera data and resetting to factory setting doesn't work. I neglected to check the Camera when I picked up mine from Roger, first time using it thought root and CWM messed it up, so I flashed Bonestocketeer, managed to get it working for about 5 minutes with all of the above then failed again.

I tried this on a buddys SkyRocket and it worked.
I pulled the camera.apk from a T989 ROM and pushed it to the skyrocket. So far, it has worked flawlessly.
Hope it helps
My phone's camera worked fine out of the box. Just noticed I'm having this problem also.
I installed / backed up with CWM and rooted my phone using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
Froze most of the AT&T bloatware with Titanium using suggestions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341558
Somewhere between these two steps may be the culprit?
Besides being rooted, I'm running stock Android 2.3.6, kernel 2.6.35.11, UCLA3 ROM. Luckily, I've only had the phone for about 10 days so I'll just have to swap for a new one if it persists after restoring and a factory reset..
Edit: Still not working after factory reset.
I started getting the error when I took the 2.3.6 OTA. It began with failures to save pics to my external SD card, then later the error popup. Clearing camera data and reformatting my external card helped a little but the problem grew back. Finally, launching the camera app always got the error.
Swapping the phone didn't help. In my case the problem followed the SD card. When I read that other apps accessing the camera might aggravate the problem, I disabled video calling in skype.
I got a new SD and the problem hasn't repeated.

Tried removing my SD card, to no avail.
After looking at how relatively cheap I can find this exact phone, unlocked, online, I now realize I made a huge mistake by going to a retailer. I paid $649.99 before taxes for the S2 Skyrocket a week ago at Best Buy Mobile, as I was replacing my recently destroyed LG Thrill, which had no insurance and was out-of-warranty.
Does anyone know if it'd be possible to just get a full refund for this device from Best Buy Mobile, and use another (much cheaper) unlocked S2 Skyrocket on AT&T's network?
Old thread. Moved to Q&A
So, I've downloaded Odin, the tar file, and anything else necessary to root, unroot, unbrick phone, etc.... I've read tons of forums and followed some I trusted very thoroughly. The problem began with my screen just suddenly going blank. This was almost two weeks ago now. Verizon has been of no help, AS USUAL.... the phone is only 3 months old, and Samsung offers no support either.
I've gotten the screen and phone to come on twice since, and that was the day of and right after it occurred. I thought I finally had it fixed after doing all of the steps in Odin last night, but the screen is still black. The other lights come on, and I can hear notifications, etc coming through but I can't see anything. I'm beyond stressed out.
If anyone can finally help me work through this, I would great appreciate it!!
Thanks so much in advance
Sorry, meant to delete this reply. I'd be happy if the mods did so x)
Hi all,
I’m a total noob to this site. And just above noob when it comes to technology. But I’m great at googling stuff
So, I have a Verizon Galaxy s3. My brother passed it on to me so it was already rooted when I got it (which I didn’t know). I moved to Moscow and was able to switch to GSM network and local provider. All was great.
I was running an old Synergy ROM (over a year old) which a few months ago started acting up. Whether it was a faulty application I downloaded or something else, it started rebooting on its own. First once every few days then once every few hours. Brother suggested installing another ROM.
I googled how to do it, installed ODIN, CWM and all the other stuff and rooted the phone. Again. Like I said, at the time, I didn’t know the phone was already rooted. I installed a new ROM; back camera stopped working. Wiped the memory, installed a new one. Nothing. Again and again. Different ROMs. I think I’ve gone through 5 or 6 ROMs. No result. Front camera works, back camera doesn’t. I googled the problem. Read a lot of forums. Cleared cache, unscrewed the back and unplugged and replugged the actual camera, restored to factory settings, and tried many other things that have been suggested. Nothing is working. I know it’s not a hardware issue, I checked it. I completely wiped the phone and went back to original Verizon stock version today, still not working. (and on top of it, now the phone is not working because it’s not recognizing Russian sim-card but that’s another issue, and I can fix that).
Help please! What’s up with the back camera?
*Sigh* - less than 24 hours and it appears to be broken. Phone popped up with an update this afternoon (UK unbranded handset) and all installed fine. Now, camera won't start and just gives a "Warning camera failed" error... I've tried all guides online (clear cache partition, clear camera app data, remove SD card etc but no luck) did a full factory reset and camera worked for less than 30 mins and failed again. I really hope I can have it swapped for a new one, I'll be so annoyed to accept a repair on something so new. I'll contact the retailer tomorrow, but in the meantime back to my HTC One M8....
Anyone else had the same issue?
Nope. But my wife did get this message in a few apps that haven't been updated for marshmallow's new permissions. Is that what your seeing or are you talking about when just trying to open the camera from the shortcut
I bought mine yesterday and camera failed today. Took it back and got it replaced. In Australia.
Yes, I have this issue with a new S7 only 3 days old. It worked for a little while, but doesn't work anymore. I have tried all the techniques above too. Hey @seedubya, I am in Sydney and on Telstra. How did you get it replaced? Did the replacement work OK?
It's a common fault, Samsung are aware of it and are replacing the units no-questions-asked.
BTW: I have tried the info at http://recomhub.com/blog/galaxy-s7-and-galaxy-s7-edge-how-to-fix-camera-failed-problem/ - but it didn't help. I have been online with Telstra for an hour and a half trying to fix this.

Ah - tks for that. Will go and get it replaced then.
Go to settings - backup and reset - reset settings
try that to fix the camera failing.
*Note*
This will reset all of your phones settings, wifi pass words and so on. This is NOT a factory reset, Just a settings reset.
Someone mentioned a work around on another thread. Go to Settings > Display and disable Smart Stay, reboot your phone and try the camera again. This worked for me and the problem hasn't come back, although I hope Samsung fix the issue as I use the Smart Stay feature!

These are the same steps posted everywhere else but with video.
Also containing the end-all-be-all tech support statement "this should work"
So when it doesn't work, what do we do?
