[Q] [BATTERY] Backup dropping after first time. - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. its a long while i hv been here. currently m on JPU which seems better any stock ROM around right now. But for last few times i hv been observing very strange. When i flash any rom for the first time with full/ moderate charge in my phone.. the backup is really impressive. but it drops immediately after I charge it for 2nd or 3rd time. its happening with most of the ROM m using. what can be the reason behind that. M rooted and calibrated my battery. using JPU last 3 days. No tweaks.

What kernel are you on? Using stock kernel or custom?

m on stock kernel.

Everything on my phone is stock and i'm not rooted so my phone is in the same state as yours. However, i am not facing any problem like yours. My battery has been on for 51 hours (nearly 56) and my battery is 15%. I would recommend that you fully charge your phone, turn the phone off (whilst it's still in charging), wait till it goes off and it will continue to charge for a while longer. Everytime you charge use this procedure and also fully drain your battery and make it go as low as you can but bear in mind that you may need your battery urgently so you should charge it if you are going to use your phone at the time.

On 3gmod 2.2.2 kernel (JPU) the battery drain is heavy. Less than 24 hrs. under normal use (not abusing 3g data synchronize, two or three phone calls, 30 min. on wi-fi...)
Exasperating.

If you read above he mentioned he is on stock kernel and don't complain about kernels because the chances are you can't make them and developers work hard to create them.

Battery life on custom roms

Ok, I have been flashing for a few months trying to optimize my phone. My last rom was serendipity 6.2, with sp 59 and jl2. I restored to stock (bc I wanted to try something else and hadn't done that in a few weeks) my battery life on serendipity was atrocious.. 6 hours with medium usage. (hardly any calls or messages, looking things up or reading xda briefly) . I spent today on stock, after about 20 hours of light usage I am at 60% left. Now I did flash with a full battery serendipity, wiped battery stats and cleared cache and after several charge cycles and a few days battery life was still awful. I was about to get a new battery. Now I don't mean to single out serendipity, I've had bad battery life on paragon, dilli, and a few others (this time it just got unbearably bad), but why should battery life be so bad on custom roms? Am I alone on this? I hesitate to flash again bc I'm loving having a phone that won't die if I touch it, but I miss the functionality of the device with a custom 2.2.1 on it. Advice or opinions please.

I'm having the same problem. Everybody keeps saying they've got excellent battery life and what not with custom roms but mine doesn't seem so good. Wifi is off, I've wiped battery stats, I've used the rom for several days letting everything get situated before I begin thinking about if its good battery life or not. Maybe I'm just expecting too much or I watch my battery a lil bit too much, idk it just seems pretty bad. If I stay on the internet for 20 minutes I've already dropped about 3%

The normal Batt live on this phone with normal use is between 12 to 16 hours
I'm thinking part of it may be psychological and part may be usage.
Psychological in the sense that I have an expectation of an improvement, practical in that with my stock rom I haven't reinstalled certain apps like xda and pulse where I spend a lot of time reading and thus using the screen.
That being said I was still experiencing drains of 8% or more per hour when the phone was idle, wifi and gps off.
There is a way to check the cpu's time in each state, but I can't remember where the file is. If someone can, please let me know. I'm curious if under the custom rom my phone wasn't properly scaling down.
I'll probably flash something new tomorrow morning unless I see something shiny and new in the dev forum.

So 6 hours seems a bit low then? Could it just be a cumulative effect of flashing rom on top of rom with restoring to stock?

Yeah 6 hrs does seem a bit low. There are many things that can contribute to it. If you are bouncing between H and 3g on a custom rom will drain it like crazy, I had to disable H and stick with 3g and that helped. could also look at OS monitor to find what is running in the background.
Ok, I did notice that recently I was jumping between h and 3g. I was experimenting with some of the new modems. Should I try finding a better modem for my location?

I would try others, as well as disable H in the hidden menus, and see how it fairs
@ zelendel.... so by H i assume you mean data... i see alot of back and forth when data is on. i know when data is off i'm still using wcdma from the gsm status, but it doesn't show the 3g icon.
i need my data because i'm from the states but living in australia and alot of my comunications are thru email/facebook.
when i look at battery usage i see rarely more than 5% from cell....usually 90 something from display ( i fiddle with it alot).
can't expect too much cause it's a powerhouse with a tiny battery........
for me the big Q at present is... can we top up the charge regularly or is it always best to let a full cycle run? if i knew it was fine to keep it topped i'd stay 50%+ most of the time i think................
It is not great to keep it topped off. The lithium battery will wear out faster and lose charging capacity over time. this process is sped up the more time the battery spends at a high charge

Visit the Samsung web site and read the battery specs for the Captivate. The stock battery is only rated for 5 hours and 50 minutes of active phone use (which means the display is active). In sleep mode (display and other features of the phone are shutdown) the battery is rated for up to 300 hours (12.5 days).
I have NEVER seen a stock Captivate last for over 3 days in sleep mode. As for active phone use (display is active) my experience with several of the custom ROMS (Cognition, Paragon, Andromeda, and now my favorite, Continuum) is that the battery life is either on par with the stock ROM, or exceeds it. The kernels on some of these custom ROMs are more efficient than that of the stock ROM due to the many tweaks and cleaning up of bloated apps and code by the developer.
I can't bring myself to keep a stock ROM now that I have used some excellent custom ROMs like those I name above.
As for flashing custom ROMs and seeing fast battery drain goes... I have had that experience with those I listed, but usually I was able to resolve the issue by ensuring my battery was at 100% (meaning showing that amount both on and off) and reflashing, or finding the cause of the high battery usage and going from there (e.g. I have had to reflash modems). Another thing I do, mainly out of habit from compiling code and deploying it in dev and test environments, is to make sure that I am working from a known good baseline ROM before flashing a custom ROM. In this case I always return to the stock ROM you can flash through Odin One Click. That way if you have battery problems after flashing a custom ROM you can have a good idea as to what is causing those problems. This is, of course, just a matter of personal preference. Some have repeatedly flashed one custom ROM over another with no issues. YMMV

No what I mean is disable HSDPA I think is the term lol. Sense you go back and forth I would say to disable that and just use 3g only.
If you don't know the code to get too the menu download sgstools it has the hidden menu keys.
Sorry but where can I find the hidden menus?

EDIT: just saw the last post thanks
I am the opposite, I got horrible battery on stock. Could not even make it through my work day without it dying on my way home unless I charged it midday. Now I am running Serendipity 6.2 and unplug at 7:30am and it is now 8:30pm my time and I have 30% remaining....
I have also tried other customs roms with noticeable improvements in battery life over stock but for me Serendipity gives me the best performance and battery.

try apex5.1 room with tl3 modem comb
i used about 50 phone call, 2 hour websurfing, email sending, checking.
i still have 41% left, 1day 10hour 50 min.
Could I have a faulty battery? I rooted and rommed cuz of my battery life being terrible but It still is bad
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I had the exact same issue as you. I tried Darky's 9.3 first, then Serendipity 6.2, then Cognition 4.2.1. Each had major battery drain, meaning 6-8 hours with moderate use, and even without any usage it would drain 25% over 3 hours.
Use One-Click to flash back to stock JF6, then immediate do a Master Clear from the One-Click program after it has finished booting. Obviously move everything to an external SD or the computer prior to all of this, and make sure the external SD and SIM are out when flashing.
My battery has lasted for 14 hours today, and I'm only down to 54%. This is with about 1hr 20min screen on, ~30min voice calls, and always connected via 3G/H with background sync on, weather widget, and moderate web browsing.
Current setup: Serendipity 6.2, Speedmod K13C, JK4 Modem
Trying again
I couldnt keep myself away from custom roms, how i missed tethering, the custom theming, non marketplace apps and so much more...
Im trying Dilli's 7.1.1, bump charging at the moment...
Last night I drained my battery to 5% when i finally fell asleep... 6 hours later it was at 4%. Finally it drained and would not power on at all. Not even the backlights. Plugged it in for an hour and thought to take the sim card out so i would have a phone for the hours it would take to charge. When i plugged it back in the phone jumped from approximately 10% to 40% charged...
Oh well.
I have also been bouncing around flashing diff roms like crazy. I have to say though, I am using Continuum v4 with Hardcores speedmod Kernel K13D. I have been doing pretty good on this combo. Lasts for most the day with normal use.

[Q] Battery drain on Galaxy 3 when on voice call & other battery problems

hello,
i have I5801 galaxy 3..
currently on kies Froyo firmware..
from since flashing to froyo ..
1) whenever i talk on phone (ie do voice call) battery drains out in even less then a hour when fully charged..
2) when kept for charging.. even if battery shows like 10% remaining .. within like a min or two.. battery indicator shows an 100% charged status.
and it drains out in like 10 mins if removed from charging
what i think is somehow froyo is assuming it's charged and is stopping the charging process.
i've rooted it, and tried calibration.. still no luck.. I've deleted batterystats.bin regularly, still a new file is created and no change in battery condition is seen
plz help.. too much frustrated
PS: i am not a pro.. so help plz

don't delete batterystats.bin do some full charge discharge then report.
tried that.. still no change
battery drained off in 30-40 mins..
does ATK make battery drain? somewhere along on some phone someone said that draining battery to nil and charging back cycle makes battery life even shorter.. dunno what to do..

Calibrate your battery after doing a full charge. And use as "normal" for few normal cycles, just like you usually did.

Hi
Try using light version of g3mod kernel instead of oc based.
You can flash your phone with my Rom and test after full battery charge. note some apps are battery drainer like tweetcaster etc due to continuous sync.
Try to stop those services and test your phone thereafter..it will show improvement. .and dont delete any battery calibration seetting once done after you flash thats all.
Do let me know if it not happens.
Cheers.

still when i try to put it to charge..
say currently it shows like 40% charge.. but as soon as i put it on charging (via AC) .. it shoots up directly to 90-100 in two minutes.... this should be wrong, right?
darin rate is also bad
it showed 100% charged and a 3 min call .. made battery level goto 45%

i was thinking about G3mod 2.0 Beta2 kernel .. heard it uses very less battery..
but i've got a question ( and i can't ask in development forum as per post limitation) that does the 2.0 Beta2 uses less battery than the official samsung jp6 kernel? or should i try flashing that?
(now i may look like stupid asking these question)
first of all, sorry for bumping this after a month..
actually G3 wasnt with me from then, now it's back and problem persists
what i notice is that
1) phone when put to charge, shoots up to 100% in 5-10 mins, even when off
2) and same with the drain, it goes to 1% in 5-10mins
i checked out with battery, and it is fine they(samsung service center) say,..
plz help, i am at question as to what is the reason for this sudden rise and fall of battery level.

nope... i had used it before but now i am currently on I5801DDJP6 updated from 2.1 eclair via kies
its stock,unrooted, no modifications..
i'd calibrate battery, but the fact that it shoots up t0 100% in 10 mins
and what i guess is when phone detects 100% battery, it pretty much stops charging after that, thus battery starves ..
can something be done so that it actually gets accurate reading on battery status ?
Switch off your cell...let it full charge....
Then switch on the device and flash the cyanogen mod...
Its fast, stable and also increases the battery power...
had the exact same problem...did that and now works for almost two days...

btw u are saying ROM or kernel?? coz i like stock ROM of samsung as it's easy to use
@bscraze i contacted service center.. they say battery's good and doesn't need replacement...
hey i discharged until phone switched itself off couple of times
and charged it back to 100% while phone was off and then again when ON..
then, i increased brightness,turned on wifi,bluetooh,gps,etc and it dropped to 90% ..
as it is stock rom i think it was between 90-100% (coz with 1% mod)
but as soon as a call came, which was of 2:38 seconds, my phone battery dropped off to 3%
any guesses, why this is happening?

that battery fall is severe only when on voice call,

any ideas about it's reason??

I have a similar problem with my G3 - I'm running CM 6.2
While I checked the OS takes 76% of the battery. I found CM6.2 better in handling FC than 7.1..Or should i just go back to Cm 7.1??

Hello everyone. its long since i posted here and thats bcoz of only one reason .. battery problem with my phone. i really was getting pissed off by the issue that i stopped posting here .. cursing my bad old phone.. my battery was lasting near abt 6-10 hrs lately .. finally i decided to..
1. flash eclair (stock) JG6 which came along at the time of my purchase and had reasonable to good batt back up. flashed that and i was like 18-24hrs of batt backup. Used it for almost one week. and as i was surfing thru our threads.. saw some really encouraging post abt Kyrillos 9.3 and its battery backup. so..
2. I flashed kyrillos 9.3 for last 3 days .. and did the calibration on my very first charging after flashing 9.3.. yesterday got almost 36 hrs of batt backup .. right now m on 84%.. unplugged @ 8pm yesterday .. it 10:15am right now in india. so its around 14 hrs .. which i feel is quite good considering my past exp with my battery ..
I dont know what actually has done the trick or its illusion to me . but after flashing eclair my phone performance has gone up smartly.
Using 9.3 NON-OC. with a2sd enabled.
i hope it can help ppl abt our all confusing battery issue .. if not .. at least it can throw some light ...
Press the thanks button if u find it helpful. Hve a gr8 day.

[Q] [9020T] 3hrs of battery life, any ideas?

Ok, so i just picked up a NS i9020t and i get less than 3 hrs of battery life. i though this was rediculous. luckily my old samsung phone takes the same battery.
a few things. 2 nights ago, i had a fully charged battery put it in airplane mode, less than 3.5 hrs later it was at 32% left. wtf?
with a fresh reboot fresh battery, same day, from 7am-930am the battery was dead, that was with very little anything. a bit of web search, email check and 10 minute call.
so today i installed juice defender ultimate, put in a fully charged battery, set the phone to extreme defend. this is what i got, in about 3.5 hrs
display 32% (really, like checking my phone 10x for texts, checking a few emails)
cell standby 19%
android system 18%
phone idle 6%
browser 6%
voice 6% (one 1minute phone call)
Juice defender 4%
anyone have any idea what the heck is draining my battery???
i am using this rom
1ada25375426.signed-soju-ota-189904.1ada2537.zip (which i think is the latest) and my kernal is, 2.6.35.7-gf5f63ef [email protected]#1
baseband version
I9020xxkf1
aslo, ever since i have gotten the phone, wifi/bluetooth hasnt worked.
any help would be amazing..
also, i noticed while flashing a rom with full battery when the new rom loaded, i went to red battery bars. something really strange is happening to my phone right now..

hmmmm ... i hate to say this , are you battery for real ? i mean it is not a fake one ?
try check it if has 1450 - 1500 mAh capacity
be honest with you , i have no idea ... since i brought second battery , i do not longer worry about this ****
--------------------
flash kernel is same as you flash ROM via RECOVERY , but be careful with kernel's instruction , some kernel is only for some ROM such as stock , and some kernel is universal , compatible to all ROM
Try oxygen from, should be a software issue

they are both genuine batteries, it would be a very rare instance, i bought both phones used, one locally, one from the usa. same issue with both batteries, i shall try oxygen..
try a stable rom without any apps.
All of the above and also try undervolting, which saves energy for longer battery life. UV made the biggest difference in this department on my Nexus S.
General tips for saving battery on any ROM is to lower the Brightness(I know, duh)
Turn OFF Location services! All of them! GPS and also location using wifi...
Your phone is acting very weird, try flashing a light ROM, maybe it is so that your Battery Stats is screwed up, try re-calibrating your battery using this app -- Battery Calibration
Never mind Juice Defender and App Killing Apps...
Wifi/Bluetooth not working with stock? That's not right :|
Flash a new ROM, that's the best advice I can give you I guess...

[Q] Problem with Battery Life

I bought this phone last week. And it worked fine for a few days but a couple of days ago I charged it to 99% before sleeping and then took it off the charger. When I woke up after 7 hours, it was at 51% battery. I restarted the phone and it worked fine. Then last night I again charged it to 99% and removed it from the charger before sleeping. When I woke up, it was at 70% after 4 hours of sleep.
A lot of the battery is being used by 'Android OS'.
Right now my battery is at 26% after being used for about 8 hours of average use.
31% battery usage is by Android OS. It has used CPU for 50m 16s.
Display has been kept on minimum brightness and used for 3h 14m and used 23% of the spent battery.
My problem is with the Android OS thing. What is using so much of the CPU? My friend's S2's Android OS had used the CPU only for 27m after 12 hours.
Maybe you could ask yourself, waht did you do just before the problem started.
Maybe:
- More syncing eg. email account?
- Power saving functions on/off?
Or any else strange behavior of android
I did install Whatsapp before the first time it happened. But removed it before second time.
Even hard reset my phone today.
Let's see what happens tomorrow morning.

Maybe u wanna include details like
1) wifi on/off periods
2) data on/off periods
3) overclocking
4) back ground processes/programs that are continuous running
5) Rom version
I dun have any data plans nor do i use wifi.
Calls less than 30mins in total. less than 50 SMS.
No games. No overclock.
My phone lasts more than 2 days !
As I said it was an average usage.
About 20 minutes of phone calls. Some messaging. No internet (wifi or date)
I am still running the stock firmware so no overclock.
I slept for about four and a half hours and the battery barely shifted from 100 to 99 tonight. But the 'Android OS' has used the CPU for 15 minutes in this duration.
Can somebody tell me the stats of the CPU usage by this process on their Galaxy R?

flick your 3G connection to 2G/GSM and make it as default in Setting->Wireless-> Mobile networks. You may notice a big difference.
BTW, I notice with ardatdat's new kernel my phone battery actually last longer than a fully stock 2.3.6 KK5. I think I m flashing back to ardatdat's
In the stats that you posted, you say that your battery time is 1d 54m. Is that on a single charge?
Have you noticed any battery backup improvement after rooting? I had thought of not rooting it till a custom ROM is available but I'll do it if it helps my battery life.

Yes, that's on a single charge. I haven't notice a big difference of battery life between the stock kernel and ardatdat's kernel unless the performance
1. There is a problem after wi-fi on/off on some 2.3.4 ROMs (at least russian one)
how to check the problem:
turn wi-fi on, turn wi-fi off (not sure if you should done establishing connection to interent)
then put phone on stand by
check if it consumed about 30% of battery after 8 hours of sleep (normally 2-4%)
2. Also there is kernel related problem
Since it upgraded to 2.6.36 there is issue - too much kworker/u processes started when device goes sleep and wakes up several times.
So, install root, advanced task kill or terminal emulator and kill those processes (as well as some other)
Turn off background synchronization, e-mails, social hubs and other internet related applications if not needed.
My current battery status: 63%, since 2 days 9 hours abd 14 mins of use
How can I check my Kernel?
Sorry for the noob question. New to android.

Last menuitem - About the phone
There is string like this:
Kernel version
2.6.36.3-I9103...
But don't bother... We should have all 2.6.36 kernel by default
Thanks.
Flashed ardatdat's kernel. Rooted now. Will be monitoring battery and freeze whatever bloatware puts too much stress on the battery.

I have the same wifi problem on swedish 2.3.4 rom, even after turning of wifi it draws a lot of power, only reboot helps.
If i reboot after using wifi, and dont start it again the battery last for several days with moderate use.
Does the root/kernel change correct that wifi issue?

Will get back to you with that, but currently it seems that either the answer is yes or the 'bug' hasn't hit yet cause even after switching wifi off, the battery backup went back to what it should be, though I haven't had a lot of standby time. Will take it off the charger before sleeping and get final results tomorrow.
Battery issue
Hi.
I got the same problem, on stock rom. Fully charged before going too sleep, 60% battery when i wake up in the morning. Standby mode, 3G and WiFi off. I searched the net and found somethig about the sd-card, dont remenber the site. I removed my sd card (16 GB class4 SanDisk micro-sd), (slot is free) and now it drains about 1% over night instead of 40%. Before it last 1 day with average use, now it last 4 days. I hope sw uppgrade will fix the problem.

Running InfectedROM V1 on ardatdat's kernel. Amazing bettery life. Lasted 12 hours with about 2 hours of music, an hour of calls, an hour of internet browsing over wifi and frequent texting over the entire 12 hours.

[Q] Heavy battery drain issue - help troubleshoot

Of late, I have been having heavy drain of battery on my Atrix 2. I am running JB 4.1.2 (672.300.404.ME865.Retail.en.05). Trying to troubleshoot it (including recalibration) since the last few days without luck.
The symptoms...
- Sudden shut down - Have had 50%+ charge levels. Goes down to 5% and shuts down within minutes. (You can see the random drops in the charge levels in the pic)
- Completely drained out battery charges from above 40% when plugged in & charges to 100% in no time. (that 67% charge in the attachment is within 5 mimutes of power plug in)
Does the battery need a replacement?

Try changing battery... even i had same problem with Custom rom. Battery used to last only for 10 to 12 hours but now its more than 17 hours on JB 4.1.2 leak,,,,...Use stock rom. and remove any unncessesary apps and installl ROM again if u want :good:
How old is your Atrix 2? If over a year then battery surely begins to give lesser performance. Disable any other task killer / memory manager & just let OS do its thing. See if installing Media Scan disable from play helps & do not keep using random chargers, make use of original charger as received with phone. Finally see Better Battery Stats. It is said battery stats should never be wiped but see if it helps you and finally search for Apex's better battery life guide for many handy tips.
I disabled notifications, sync, froze higher wakelock apps & my battery life improved a bit but then it is no fun existing in a bare bones environment.

The phone is just about a year and half old. The drop in battery performance is just too drastic, sometimes it doesn't even last an hour after the charge. Will try to go back to original ROM and see if it improves else will probably have to go for a new battery pack.

Look like a battery problem to me its not the ROM but anyways turn off location services and wifi they are a big battery drainer
Use 2G when u dont need high speed.......
Try this app called Greenify https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify
(it helps to reduce wakelocks and improves your battery life)
 Let me know if it helped (btw chck your battery and see if its defected they are amny ways to chck it read up the forums )
i have the same problem whit any rom of 4.2. when the custom rom shows 5% i change to stock ics rom an that show me 45%

Think mine is clearly a battery issue. Replaced the battery with a new one yesterday and now the phone lasts 6 hrs at least on a single charge.
CM 10.1.3
I couldn't write to developer's forum so I'm asking here.
I've recently firmwared my AT&T A2 CM 10.1.3 and battery drains really fast! The previous build was CM 10.1 (25th of June). I wiped cache and dalvik cache and firmwared CM 10.1.3. At least 3 people report that thie batteries on this ROM drain slow.
What did I do wrong???

Battery life varies so much from user to user that it is impossible to answer your question without A LOT more information.
Go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Download the app and follow the directions in the op. That and reading through that thread itself should tell you everything you need to know about what is using up your battery.
That being said, everyone has different habits and expectations when it comes to their battery. What one person says is good battery life, another will likely say is bad. So just keep in mind that there is not a right or wrong, just what is right or wrong for you.
If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be making money in a very weird way.
Thank you fro your answer. When I used previous version of CM the battery lasted 3 days with minimal using and turning the flight mode at night on.
As long as I installed newer version with JBX kernel the battery lasts 20 hrs max.
