LG Nitro HD - Android General

Just a note, this device is hot. Really hot. I burned myself, actually. It is never a good idea for a manufacturer to overclock a processor. The LTE does not burn battery as quickly as most people seem to think (compared to other devices), but overclocking by 0.3 GHz does.

oh!! wow! never heard about this device.....

I didn't think that this phone was going to be launched til December 1st. How'd you already get your hands on it?

Well, the LG Nitro HD is exactly the same device as the one launched in Korea and and Canada as the LG Optimus LTE. I got my hands on a Korean and a Canadian version. I found them...Identical, really.

I have never had anything to do with LG, but decided to give it a go. I will give them credit on creating the "best" phone out there. It is really the fastest in terms of network and in terms of hardware. I tested against SGSII and HTC Raider, which are certainly high-profile devices currently. Could not "get my hands on" a Galaxy Nexus.
With all its merits, the LG device is, I believe, using an APQ8060 processor overclocked to 1.5 GHz. I discharged and charged the battery multiple times, and was left with the same impression: battery runs out VERY QUICKLY. On the first day it was at around 20% per hour with minimal usage, then, by the sixth day, it slowed down to about 10% per hour (also with minimal usage).
It also tends to get quite hot, especially when charging. That nice metal below the rear-facing camera? Yeah, DO NOT touch that.
Summing it up, the device really does perform better than every other device. The problems are that it does not last (I believe one user on this forum summed it up as "the fastest device on the market for the hour that it lasts"), and that its safety is...questionable.

Yup the device has already been released in Canada as the Optimus LTE and the phoneès only saving grace is the screen on it at 1280 x 720 IPS

I cannot do anything but pity the people who have gotten/will be getting this phone.
It has always been legal to sell faulty products, just as a car company can decide to recall a million cars or leave them there and settle lawsuits due to deaths. Not quite ethical, however. Ethical is something I think I would like our dear mobile service providers to be.
All its flaws aside, that overheating issue WILL be a problem. We all love to laugh about the iPhone's occasional spontaneous combustion, but this device stands poised to take that title.

I hope what you saying about overheating is true or you going to talk to LG lawyers pretty soon!
But I'm getting this phone! If it overheat, I just return it. Nothing to lose by getting this phone!

Just make sure you meet the requirements to return the phone while you are playing with it.

Try running something processor-heavy. If you are going to baby it, I doubt anything will happen.

I'll do some heavy browsing and YouTube video watching plus some games tomorrow when I get back to work. But.. the phone has a huge banding issue. At least the one I played with did. It is clear and smooth but you can see the color separation and its like a rainbow effect. Also the build quality feels cheap compared to the vivid.

If it doesn't have tons of ram i don't want it.

Unless the samoled 2 is also a solar panel, I don't experience the best battery life...

Probably gonna be bogged with RFS and and TouchWiz. If they bork the nexus S with RFS that will seriously suck. I know we can run lag fixes etc. but it would be nice to get a phone that doesn't need to be hacked just top be functional (totally would still root it, but its just the satisfaction of knowing that I wouldn't have to ^_^)
I'd still pick the Nexus S.
If the Captivate has such awful battery life, I can't imagine what a 1.2ghz processor and a 4.3" screen will do to it.
The Google Experience with a 4" screen is my dream phone. The S2 sure does look pretty though.

with all this extra power, bigger screen etc, I couldnt believe what kind of a battery it would need to be HALF DECENT.
Companies should stop competing in cpu wars, display wars etc and really revolutionize a battery that will last at least a full 24 hours with moderate usage.

Like Engadget said, these slides are 100% real from Samsung... they just used an image of a different device to get their point across. Not meant to be seen by the whole world.
Anyways, the device (which can be confirmed real by Engadget, BGR, AndroidCentral) is called the Samsung Elite: http://briefmobile.com/new-samsung-elite-specifications
It is the successor to the Galaxy S line and it's due in early 2011 for announcement.

Sounds reasonable, I was wondering if it's samsung advertising our a mock up of what might come next.
People around here are so argumentative over things where they have no facts. Also I don't get what people expect of a phone, I find battery life between meets expectations to excellent depending on what rom and modem I'm running.
And where did the notion that amoled displays hog power come from? that's the opposite of true, I don't know what the droid x is like but go buy an evo and check the battery life, it's far from good.
I'm excited about the nexus s and hope the rom and kernel port to the captivate, I just wonder if the modem will be a problem, I'm guessing it will be hsupa+ (4g) and wonder if the hardware is the same in that area and if the modem file will support the att 3g bands, or will a froyo captivate modem.bin work in gingerbread? I'll have to wait and see. As for my next phone I'll wait for a dual core device.

The big Infuse 4G comparison thread

Hey folks.
I've seen several comparison threads on the Infuse around here. Although it's nice to compare the Infuse with other (newer) devices out there, a thread can derail very quickly or become a flame-fest.
That's why I thought of starting this comparison thread, which can be stickied and will be the ONLY comparison thread in General. Others will be closed.
Every pro and cons may be discussed, as long as we watch our language and play nice.
Discussion may start....
Now.
I'll start, cons:
NEED MOAR CORES!!!
...and more RAM... and a better GPS.
Pros:
Everything else!
Who agrees?
i completely disagree, batterylife is so-so as it is with the stock firmware, what would it be with another core to support? ram is not an issue if it is managed correctly, more ram just gives app developers an excuse to get lazy. try the 99tweaks mod in dev section and ignore the reported free ram, it is insignificant information.
gps, well we know samsung sux at that :/ it is wonky and has worse reception than my captivate (not to say it works worse, that would be a lie but my captivate can loc in places that my infuse can't it just takes longer and tracks like **** if agps is enabled)
needs 1080p recording, i think the gpu is marginal for that ability but i think if they had real talent in their software department it could be "possible" though i know it will never happen.
You also have to consider majority over minority. A large amount of people that pick up these phones don't know what "rooting" or flashing firmwares and all that can do. The average Joe will just minimize the app and keep going. They want to have a phone that works out the box without a need to jump through hoops.
Adding more to something already good is never a bad thing. Basically it would be a SGSII with a bigger screen, and last I checked it's probably one of the most popular phones on the market to this date.
Yall thinks it worth giving up the Infuse for the Nexus Prime when it hits the market in a few months??

all up to you buddy. i think there is too much emphasis on hardware, yeah hardware is cool and benchmarks are cool but the infuse has raw capabilities that some tegra powered phones dont have in video playback.. like i said earlier there isnt much the phone can't do. but obviously the infuse is near the bottom of the barrel when it comes to 2011 phones as far as hardware goes. i would say pick up the next nexus and see if it tickles you a certain way, you will be assured that it will have the best firmware at any givven time. if the nexus doesnt do it for you then return it.

Hm...I disagree. My phone has been able to manage everything well with a single core, and RAM has never been an issue. (Maybe on stock, but then again, I flashed a ROM as soon as I got it so yeah)
And I don't get what the problem with GPS is. Maybe I live in a place where Sammy is er...I have no idea what to say but yeah. I live in New Jersey and I haven't had a GPS issue so far...

It's crazy. I like some things about my infuse, I like some things about my thrill
I keep swapping back and forth between the two.
I no longer have any interest in the SGS2....but I do look forward to seeing what ATT does with LTE around Christmas
I have a HTC Sensation and an Infuse 4g and believe me battery consumption on Dual Core Sensation is annoying and i throw it away. Infuse has good battery life and does everything with a single core. My next phone will probably be a Galaxy Note depending on battery.
here is Infuse with 4.5 and galaxy S2 with 4.27" (<--look like 4 inches!").
phone size is only a little bigger, but your eyes will notice the HUGE screen different! if it' not 4.5, i dont want it!
update: try to look at each screen for 5 seconds, then you will see the HUGE screen different!

i only noticed the galaxy S2 (dual core) boots up and loads webpages with flashes faster. other than that, i dont noticed that much different since i overclocked my infuse to 1.6Gzh with bedwa kernel.
Now when it comes to battery life on the GSII based on your normal use, would you say it was worse or same/similar?
Reason I'm asking is because I never really messed with a dual core android unit... yet, but was curious what real improvements they bring other than benchmarks.
I liked running my Infuse at 1.6Ghz, but could never find the right voltage to keep it going while maintaining a great battery life.
Btw, thanks for the input, kinda changed my perspective on DC phones a little.

battery life is about the same on both phones, after 8 hours at work,
I have about 20% battery left. I mostly surf the web while on break and lunchtime.
Now I underclocked the Infuse to 800mzh during work hours, after 8 hours I have about 40% left.
The Infuse is the first smartphone I've owned, I can only compare to other phones I've played with for a short time. I run the Infused 2.1.0 with 1.6 Infusion 1.1 kernel, and my Infuse is faster than many others. The battery life is great, I'm on my phone for about 4-5 hours talk time, and heavily use web, music and the occasional game. I can get a day and a half worth out of the battery before charging. If I dont use those, sometimes I can go 3 days. I dont see much difference with dual cores. If the phone was ran stock, yes, you can tell noticeable difference. I do wish it could record in 1080, but thats not that big of a deal. Never had a problem with GPS, or anything else I can think of.
Infused 2.1.0
Infusion GB Kernel 1.1
Is that an Infuse in my pocket
or am I just happy to see you?
Does anyone know of any place where you can actually use NFC?
Infuse
I have to say after being on my first Android Phone making the jump from WinMo to my Cappy and learning about Roms, tweaking and modding I was excited to make the next jump to the next Android phone. I had 30 days after purchase that I was going to use the Infuse and then make the transition to the SGSII for the bump in power and performance but sacrificing the minor screen downsizing. But after experiencing and reading many users inputs and advice I decided to hang on to the Infuse. I am finding the power is perfect for what I want and need (Mostly email, Text and web) I hardly use the GPS or maps (Currently Frozen in TIBU at the moment) and battery life is average or comparable to all others I have read about. I found that most user that get extraordinary long battery life is due to no SIM and WiFi only use, as I have done and got two days out of my battery before at the sacrifice of connectivity availability. But overall I think the infuse is comparable if not better phone than most and I would like to see more development and activity for this device even though its not the "Most Popular" phone on the block at the moment.
I just saw the sgs2 att comercial and gotta say it looks quite sexy. but ill wait and see things like Rom compatibility with the international version and final hardware specs. there were rumors that Samsung would use tegra2 chips in some markets. not really sure about that but hope that we get the Orion chip.
it may be better to wait for the galaxy s 3 or whatever comes next but the att gs2 does look good.

Samsung Galaxy SIII S3 & Nexus Prime rumours and specs

Rumours about Galaxy SIII are popping out. If SIII will have all the specs in this article, it's gonna be a blast. Guess we shouldn't worry about our SII getting old yet, cause it will probably take at least one year for SIII to be launched. Here's the article:

I hope one good outcome of all these Apple lawsuits is that Samsung could finally stop designing phones that closely resemble iPhones (Internaional versions of GS1 and GS2 with the big HOME button in the middle) or iPad (GTab 10.1). Making some truely unique looking phones, Samsung.

2.0 ghz quadcore? wow! it'll eat the batt again!
again, batt life will be a major problem, even with the alleged 2250 mah batt
I just heard a rumor that Galaxy S4 will have 4.95 in HD screen with 1680x1050 resolution, Tegra 4 with 8 cores and laser pen with refillable ink that can be used to write on paper or as a stylus on the phone. I beg to differ: the majority of the time the phone will be in deep sleep or at minimal (200? Mhz) with minimal voltage.
And according to those rumours, it gonna be 28nm fabrication process (that means lower power consumption).

no such thing as "enought powerful"
anyways, the source is 4chan. hardly the most reliable.
The only thing I am interested in are the UMTS band frequencies supported by next devices. I am tired of seeing tri- or quad-band android phones that are not necessarily compatible with every major countries. This means that you have then to wait for a specific version for your country, you are oftentimes stuck with carrier-specific phones, etc.).
And I am not talking about compatibility with new networks (LTE, 4G europe, etc.)...
Take the current generation of phones specs double them, release as rumor about new phone, repeat

Don't think I'm gonna be in much of a hurry to leave my bolt just yet. Its a solid device, and has some really talented developers releasing quality ROM's to breathe new life into the bolt.

I'm with you man, very solid device and with MIUI available now I see no need to upgrade. A lot of developers are creating some amazing work for the bolt! New nexus is cool and I had the first one and loved it but I'm waiting too.
My wife is upgrading this month either the Razr or the Rezound. I am due for an upgrade in January. I am definately waiting to see the Nexus first. If it is $500, definately selling TB to buy Nexus off contract, just to save upgrade to quad core, which I think won't happen until the summer of 2012.

whenever quad-core is released, I have a feeling its going to be one of those last minute "surprise!.. we're releasing it next week!" sort of deal.
as for the TB, I've got someone offering me $300 for it(although with 9 cases & 5 batteries)... that's why I'm considering an upgrade(+ I have an upgrade available right now).
well I got my thunderbolt end of march so I got awhile. still very satisfied with my thunderbolt.
There's really no need to. I just got my TB in June and I'm very happy with it. Plus as other people have said I also won't be thinking of an upgrade until the quadcores come out. Hopefully a new quadcore HTC device will release soon because honestly I'm not feeling the Rezound at all. I think its rather ugly

its funny that you mrntion that... when I was looking at the Thunderbolt originally I remember the salesman saying "how can you go wrong with this kickstand" and demonstrating it for me. I raised my eyebrow and said "sold!"
Yeah, I will have to try to locate a non crappy "kickstand case" for any future phones....I use that thing constantly. Funny that it's about the one unique feature the tbolt has left in the verizon lineup, heh.
Ordered the Rezound today. Won't be home tomorrow so it will be here Wed.

Yeah I dont understand how a kickstand isnt already standard on every phone now developed. At least every new HTC phone. I use it every single day watching netflix vids on my lunch break.
I really want a nexus just for the increased screen space and AMOLED screen. I'm growing tired of the poor battery life with the TB and the thickness of it. But unless I can find a convenient way to prop up the nexus, or to get a reasonable sale on my TB, looks like she'll be with me for quite some time.

I'm waiting to see what Samsung has to offer, I'm not due for a new phone until June anyway.

Exactly the same situation here. If Samsungs new device sucks then its definately gotta be the S. Just hoping that the Galaxy's screen isnt as big as the One X's one. It's just too much... :what:

Well, even though it has it critics, and I do go through periods of using AOSP (and prob will on the S once it's available and stable) I still think Sense is the best custom UI on Android. Simple really, SGS3 can't match that element

Supposedly its going to have a 1080p screen, to me this is a bad thing.
1) I bet it is bigger than the ONE S and I wasn't quite happy with the size of the ONE X
2) It takes more horse power to run it, so its processor and graphics may be higher but side by side performance will probably be similar due to it having to push more pixels about the place. Also.. 1080p.. on a phone... What's the F'in point??
First i'm 100% sure that Galaxy S III won't have 2gb of ram neither 1080p screen. Its a next generation and since theres obvious settlement betwen manufacturers you can expect same specs as One X. And i'm also pretty sure that it won't have SD card, every manufacturer stops using them, why should they use them, about removable battery i'm not sure, if new galaxy is gonna be thinner then i guess it will have non removable battery.
I think the S3 will have 4.7 screen, so its big, also display will be as good as X. About other specs - I suspect quad core processor, some good graphic component, rumors about 12mp camera.
But anyway, there are only rumors atm, and Im not fan of S2, so I will go for One S as soon as it avaible here

but on 3rd may we might get some new infos (... no rumours)
however a display bigger than 4,6" is much to big for my taste...
if thats going to happen, i probably will get myself a ONE S
If it takes T-mobile US as long as it did to get the Galaxy S 2....i'm not waiting.
But then again, i don't want to wait. Im tired of Samsung's plastic devices, ugly touch wiz, and international Galaxy S3 will be different from the US Galaxy S3, which will hinder dev support.
Im sure the one s will have great dev support like the sensation. Every one S around the world will be the exact same and will run the same roms.
The only thing i was hating about htc phones was the bad slcd screen, so happy theres amoled now, and i dont care if its pentile.

There is a rumor tht the one x is coming to Tmo with stock ics. I know the gs3 will be beast but I hate touchwiz and love sense. I had a mt4gs and now have a sg2 and touchwiz kills it. There is no stock ics that's working well, and no sense .: /. I want the One s or the One x one tmobile, but would get the gs3 if there is a stock ics rom

Samsung gps
I am ready to upgrade from my Vibrant. I like my Samsung but the GPS is crap. I'm not sure I would trust a Samsung gps. I keep waiting for the gps to run me over a cliff. Is any Samsung gps as good as HTC?
nothing compares to HTC GPS. I can get a lock in under 15 seconds. no tweaks.
i never lose the satellite. Its found me home many times
kinda yes, I really like GS2 and SAMOLED Plus is great. But we still don't know if GS3 will be SAMOLED HD or SAMOLED HD Plus. It's most likely be the same size as One X, packing same or better CPU, probably same or better quality camera, and most likely missing things like notification light and noise canceling mic.
Already got one s and prefer HTC build

Same boat as @tf442. I have a "first month out" Vibrant and GPS has been abysmal from the get-go. I have flashed at least a dozen ROMS (probably more)from Bionix, Trigger all the way to ICS 4.0.4 and they vary, but still no where near other manufacturers GPS. I will not give $$$ to Samsung since they went on the pine in acknowledging any issues with GPS. That, and quit with FROYO. Not good for a top-end phone at the time.
I am eligible for upgrade now, but I don't think I am going to. I might wait out until mid to end-year to upgrade. I am pretty satisfied with my G2 still. Everyone swears it's a great backup phone, but I like it as my main phone all the same.
