Need some help with CM7 - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I really need some help.
I just got a new EVO Shift and the updated sense keeps rebooting almost every time I click on the home screen button...
Anway, it seems that CM7 is the most stable. ButI have never rooted and don't really understand and there are just soo many threads on it.
Can someone please help me out and point me to a single tutorial to allow me to load CM7? I have the latest version of the firmware etc... Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate it as I am really overwhelmed now.

Try this

Shifted from my EVO.

the majority of the threads all say the same thing, its a really simple process just a little time consuming if youre precautious. just take your time and follow the directions.

Yeah like somebody said, take your time and be precaustious. And read thoroughly!

You can mail your phone to me and I'll root it for you.

Thanks guys, but it seems that this link doesn't really tell you how to do it with a CM7 ROM? Which is the one I would like to install as I remember it being the most stable...
Can someone point me to the CM7 install from scratch?

Well you have to be rooted first. Start with that.
Then you have to install a recovery.
Then make a backup.
Then install a cm7 rom.
Have you done the first 3 steps?

It tells you how to root your phone and flash CM7 from scratch and backup your phone. Questions? Post them in the thread.

[ROM] HTC Desire HD Ported To Evo Successfully

Ok so i was like some of the other people who kept getting the boot loop in the beggining so i got bored and i began to flash a different rom
I flashed the new Fresh 3.3.0.1 with the new kernal which I think was the fix.
That Rom Can Be Found Here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743079
Now flash That
Step 2: Download Version 2 of the Desire HD Rom Found Here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790838
Step 3: Boot Into Recovery and flash do a full factory and Cache wipe
(BTW after you install Fresh's Rom)
Step 4: Now flash the V2 Of the Desire HD Port Not V1
(V2 Not V1...That is very Important)
Step 5: Boot Up and right wen it says english hit next.
If you dont hit it in like 40 secounds you are going to have to do steps 1-4 all over again.
Step 6: Run through the WHOLE set up.
Step 7: Thank this post and comment
Tell me how tit works out
I have had no problems at all so far except the Camera
Other than that, this rom is amazing!!!

Not trying to be a jerk, but really, you didn't do anything besides flash the rom.
Not sure what else you did personally on your phone. I think it would be most helpful to post up what else you did... like how you got VVM working or 4g like you said?
I appreciate the time you took to write this up, don't get me wrong. But the ROM isn't your port, basically you said exactly what was said in the rom thread.
but the instructions in the rom thread dont work now do they?
this actally gets u up and running instead of a bootloop or airplane mode

Post up how you got 4g for everyone who has 4g service. Post up how you got VVM working...

SORRY luc or any mod that will delete this lol just going though the recent threads and no matter what we say they always seem to install it!!!
close or delete at your leasure
please use krylons cwm final

if you installed rom manager delete it and take the update.zip from krylons thread and put it to the root of your sd card..
*Note*
Newer kernels dont require this as cwm is built directly into the kernel..

I just got done reading this thread about not using Rom Manager EVER on the SGS4g, so I went ahead and used it and my phone boot loops now....what gives? I figured that it may work with a vibrant ROM as I heard it works on the regular galaxy s, so I Odin back to stock, reinstalled Rom manager and flashed cm7 for the vibrant...now my phone won't even boot...what gives? Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? It's almost like Rom manager doesn't work on this phone or something. Someone should make a step by step guide for flashing this phone...you know, like an SGS4G Bible.

What consequences will have installing Rom Manager?
What if I installed it but didn't use it?

If you installed it and didn't use it, no problem.
If you used it to 'install', then you earned a one way trip to using Odin to get everything back.
Raver, if you don't mind could you please make the title have capital letters and not lowercase like it does. There is no reason for it other than everytime I open the forum, it bugs me. Also, what is up with the "bold" html command ""?
I wonder what goes through other peoples heads when they decide hey I'm going to root my phone and install a custom Rom. I mean the first thing I did was a Google search on how to root SGS4G. That lead me to XDA. Then I found the actual SGS4G forum and began searching for guides. This was the same process for my MT3G and my G1. I don't understand why people would just grab Rom manager and assume it's a cure all. Boggles the mind.

that works out fine if the first thing you get led to is xda, but if you are unlucky like me then you end up at joe schmoe's tech blog or something similar and they tell you that any android phone can be "hacked" with superoneclick and rom manager. thats where the true issue lies, imo: that not the sites state the same info and most of that is wrong.
Thanks raver!

+1 Sure there were multiple sites related to the subject, which is why you take a little bit of time to examine more than one. I know I didn't just click the first option and run with it.
This post got me thinking. We have the SGS4G Bible but apparently it can be a little overwhelming and too much information for some people to digest before they start modding their phones.
Keeping the biblical theme maybe a simplified "SGS4G TEN COMMANDMENTS" that contain the ten most common questions and answers, noob mistakes, and does and don'ts in one place. Simple, easy to read, and easy to refer people to. For example...
Commandment 1: DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER...EVER!
Commandment 2: DO NOT FLASH VIBRANT ROMS....EVER! - THE SGS4G IS NOT A VIBRANT!
etc, etc....you get the idea.
Any thoughts?

Try searching. All your questions have been answered many times. With a simple search you could have had all your answers instead of waiting. BTW, many people don't reply to threads like this as they are tired of people asking questions that can be answered by searching first.
ilovebeerdanny: as a fellow newcomer I can share my experience which is that this community is super cool and filled with people who will help you out but no-one here is going to hold your hand. You're much more likely to get help if people see you've done your homework first.
When reading answers to your question pay attention to who's giving them. There's a reason members like jboxer and FatalityBoyZahy have high Thanks meters.
Welcome to the forum and have fun.

ROM and Kernel

Hello First time poster , but ive been reading for a while now. Im a complete noob, but i successfully rooted my phone through the guides here, so ive done some extensive searching through the forum.
I really like my rooted infuse, but i totally envy my gf's gs2 . I wont be able to renew my contract until next year, so for now, i want to use my phone to its full potential. Opinions are welcomed,
I basically have a rooted stock phone running froyo 2.2.1. Read through a bunch of comments how froyo operated better than GB on the infuse, what are your thought on that?
Reason i ask is because i would like to run a custom rom, i really like MIUI, CM7, and ZEUS. I went through endless pages but im tied between them.
Which would you recommend. Im looking for performance, style and stability. I know its a matter of opinion, but im open to what many have to say.
Bit a confusion too, since i have a rooted 2.2.1 froyo will doing a custom rom automatically, upgrade me to gb or even maybe ics.
I also have seen in some threads where many mention that some of the roms come with a custom kernel already. Which ROMs would those be?
Im a noobie, but i did search the forum. You can lead me into the right direction that'd be great
Please and thank you

First off, welcome to the forum. When it becomes to roms it all depends on ur liking. We have a lot non official custtom GB roms. This is the beaty about android, flash until u find the one you like and that goes for modems and kernels. I would suggest to start flashing and keep reading. GL and I hope you the one for you.

Hey thanks for the welcomes and not bashing the noobie.
ima flash today, hopefully everything goes good.
so far after some more research came up with a little summary of steps,
Im running rooted infuse 4g, froyo 2.2.1
so far what i got from it is,
-install 3e recovery
-clockword mod
-nandroid back up
-insert preferred rom to sd
-boot into recovery via clockword
-clear data/cache w.e
-install zip
-reboot
and done, did i forget a step? enlighten me please.
Another thing Zeus requires me to have a GB Bootloader, how would i go about doing that?
please and thank you

You're on the right track.
Get the roms and files downloaded to your pc and your phone.
might want to make a folder on your phone (ex:roms or flashhappy)
put all those files in there.
good to have entropy's latest kernel, superuser signed pak in doctorz roms too)
if you want, it may be simple also just to use sgskernel flasher from market, flash gtg infused kernel if you're on froyo and boot into cwm and go from there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220090
i have a fail safe method that i use. learn to use heimdall and install a driver on one port on your pc - and save that one port for only heimdall.
use adam's uckj4 heimdall package. flash it once, flash again with boot loader checked (this will give you gb bl) then flash defuse kernel in second post and then flash your rom

good luck
Thank you very much, greatly appreciate it.

Noob to SGS4G for T Mobile...

Okay people I just bought this phone and I'm coming from MyTouch 4G. I've been reading for the past 2 days about how to flash a SGS4G and honestly,..it's crazy! Little overwhelming to be Honest...to the point, I rooted my phone with Superoneclick, I have superuser, so I know it's rooted. Plus, I have Titanium Backup running on my phone. Everything is still FACTORY SET on the phone. It is running 2.2.1 Froyo. I did read about Froyo udate zip CWM and recovery and have downloaded them. My question is since I want to flash A Rom does it have to be Froyo only? If there is such a thing?? Or can it be Gingerbread 2.3.6? And is there anything else I need to download? I know I have to follow to the tee on the OP that the Dev. says to do. I just want to be sure exactly what I need to do..

The gb ext4 starter pack saved me alot of headache when I first got this phone. Hands down it is the best way to go. Just make sure you follow the directions exactly. Its guides like this and the people that make them that make XDA so great.
I'm new to it as well and like you are saying, it's overwhelming to root and flash on this phone. But I followed the GB starter pack the other day and included the Vahalla Final rom as my choice and everything worked great. Some things actually happened a hair different than described and I thought it screwed up but it worked.
But I think I just screwed up trying to do a restore

I've been spying on the forums here and have noticed that most of your guys' roms are gingerbread roms, (i didn't really bother to search, for I don't know for sure I'll keep this phone or sell both my mt4g and this new phone for a galaxy s ii), but anyways, I saw something about porting roms from the other galaxy phones, am I right?
I haven't seen any ics roms here yet, but I took a look at the vibrant forums and it appears they have an ics rom and i was wondering would porting the ics rom from the vibrant be possible if I wanted to try. Thanks

I only found an ics styled gingerbread rom for this phone.

It is a touchy subject in this forum. I would leave it alone. The kernel isn't there yet but the devs are working hard to make it happen for the community!

But I'm sure the roms you guys have are very stable, right?
And so I'm guessing porting isn't easy for this phone?

Most will tell you if you want a rom ported do it yourself. The devs are working on what they are working on. It isn't really our place as end-users to make request (my opinion of course) rather be grateful for all the awesome **** they have done and are working on. So no... it isn't easy.
And yes --> We have some fantastic ROMS.

Yea, I kinda got a feeling it was a do it yourself community here cause I went into the dev section and was like dang you guys don't really have a lot of choices, but then I went to the vibrant's dev section and they have a lot just like the phone I have now.
What phone is easiest to port from for the galaxy s 4g, I'm thinking the vibrant but idk
