[Q] Should I get a Tablet? - General Questions and Answers

Ok. So I have the Epic 4G Touch. I'm thinking about picking up an Asus Transformer for $250 at Best Buy this Black Friday. I pointed out the phone so that I don't get a tablet that is weaker than my phone. I'm expecting it to be on par, or better.
Will a tablet really be worth it? Or should I just stick with using my phone. The Asus is a dual tegra device, so I'm expecting something good there. I really don't want to spend no $500+ for a tablet when I can get a laptop with WAY better standards.
I'm kinda feeling the tablet thing. Take it to school and use it to do my online work, play Android games and ROMS, type up papers. That's all I'm really doing with my laptop. When I need to do my programming work, then of course I'll use my laptop.
So I'm guessing I should join the tablet family? eL oh eL!! Any tablets that people would recommend? I'm liking the Asus since it's dual Tegra and I can try out those Tegra apps.

Better wait for transformer with tegra 3 chipset.. tegra 2 got some problems like hd video playback in browser and I recommend to wait for TEGRA 3.. if. U r in hurry, u can get one however...

I don't really plan on HD Video watching. Though I'll look at some of the problems that seem to be surfacing about the dual Tegra chipset, to see if the Pros way out the Cons.
And I'm sure the Tegra 3 tablet coming out this Christmas will run at least $500 Wifi only, and I don't really plan on paying that much. I could just sell my phone, get a mid-range Android phone, and then get a Data enabled Tablet. I MIGHT do that if I want a tablet that powerful. No need for walking around with 2 Hydrogen Bombs. eL oh eL!!

Well 250 is a good price. If I had the extra time to wait in lines and the extra cash I would pick one up.

Should I return my xoom?

Been playing with my xoom for less than a week now and thinking about returning it.
As such, I have a HTC desire and to me the xoom is just a bigger version of my phone.
How likely will we see Kal-El tablets next month? Should I just return my xoom and wait for the next wave of tablets?
Any thoughts?

I would say not very likely that you see the new tablets soon, sometime in 2012
root xoom, install themes, download docs to go for running Microsoft word, excel etc. download hacked Netflix app for movies, run custom ROM, overclock your dual core processor....remember that a tablet is not a laptop replacement.
What are you hoping for it to dothat you are doubting it??

First, a tablet is not a laptop replacement. Maybe next year.
If you really want a tablet, but the xoom disappoints, return it and buy the I pad. Most people see the TV commercials and think they want that. The I pad is a toy in a tablet form factor. A friend of mine asked for a recommendation the other day. I said:
For work get a xoom
For mindless activity, get an I pad.
They got an I pad.

though I would love the same but you can play 720p converted to h264 baseline profile.it looks as good as 1080p on 10'' display.
a tablet that has say 120gb memory running on windows 8 with native support for windows program and full hd playback can replace netbooks.we need towait till 2013 considering how slow technology is moving.
I seriously considered returning it at the start too. Until I found the Netflix app on xda and dice player to play my hd video files. I still think it's bull**** Netflix and HBO Go apps aren't in the market for Xoom. But get those apps and teamviewer and I barely use my laptop except when I have to type something long. Love it now!
I returned mine and decided that my Alienware M11x would better suit me
I'll probably pickup the quad core tablets once they're released.

Also,
It's £329 for the xoom and I can get a faster i3 laptop for the same price...
And with the uncertain economy and government budget cuts nationwide, it's better for me to save money in the meantime!!!

[Q] Worth buying now?

Is it worth buying now or just wait for Xoom 2 or I should buy Galaxy Tab 10.1?
I have iPad 1 ,but I don't like it ,it not very productivity just game. I am now considering buying an Android Tablet.
Should I buy Xoom or Galaxy Tab 10.1? I also like to flash new ROM. Which one have more custom ROM?
Good question. My two cents...
Presumably, Google will release the source code for Honeycomb sometime soon after the release of Icecream Sandwich. It's also a (I believe widely accepted) presumption that a new model Xoom will be released soon, especially with the Christmas season approaching.
Not that Google and Motorola should really ever be expected to have their **** together enough to coordinate this correctly, from a marketing stand point it makes the most sense. It would make sense that the new Xoom would have the new OS in it.
However, two great things will happen if that's all true; three price of the Xoom 1 will drop considerably (it already has dropped pretty far), and new Honeycomb ROMs will be popping up with far better customizable interfaces and capabilities than Icecream Samich!
This is all speculation on my part, and I may be completely ignorant of some key facts, but it's the reason why I have no interest in a new tablet or Icecream Sandwich.
My last experience with this sort of thing was when I was loading my Droid 1. Even though updates were open source (TRUE O.S.), and always highly anticipated, they never really contained anything so mind blowing that I ever felt it was worth jumping to a new custom made ROM that had it.
My advice is to get a Xoom now, or just when the new one hits the market. I'm no expert and would love tosee what other members say.
Yes...I bought mine three weeks ago.
But then again I wanted a solid tab experience and the Galaxy didnt cut it for me.
Build quality is better on the Xoom IMO - and I was lucky to snag a new one at $449.
A few things that I like about the Xoom:
- Screen quality is great on my unit - even though its an AUO.
- Sound quality is the best of any tablet. Im assuming you are using this device for media consumption and you wont be disappointed with the speaker layout or sound.
- Build quality is top notch. No Flex. Gorilla Glass.
- My unit is Wifi only (I have a tether plan if needed) and the battery life even on Stock ROM and Kernel is fantastic (rooted).
- For business use I like this tablet a lot. I can have clients sign .pdf's with ease and handle Office docs easily with QuickOffice and Repligo (Worth the $20 for a business professional)
There will always be something better because of the push to create with Android. Do yourself a favor and buy this now (if you play with it and like it of course) and if you need to upgrade in a year or so then do so.

I echo those sentiments.
i agree too, i bought mine even after i found out that motorola is preparing a quad core tab for release soon, but if i kept waiting for the latest then i will never end up buying anything, and i understand that every open source tablet with android is supported with updates for 18 months maybe ? i remember i read that somewhere, so motorola and google now as one company will support updates for us till october 2012 so i am pretty sure we will also get ICS
I just put my TP on e-bay. Now my TP had a OC 1.7 dual core with a gig of ram and a great GPU and IMO the best speaker system you could want. Once honeycomb gets put on it it will rock and be one of the best tabs there are right now IMO.
But i still sold it. I need HDMI out, SD card reader and the accessory support. I got a wifi only xoom for 310 shipped on ebay.
So really its up to you lol
I bought my xoom 3g second hand for 275. Loving it. But if price wasn't an issue, I might have gone with a galaxy tab 10.1 because it is a lot lighter which I think is important for a device you are going to be hold up to read a lot. Samsung manufactures excellent screens as well.

Xoom is better imho...you got a fantastic deal. Enjoy it and don't look back.
The XOOM is so lame I would say get an iPad2, there still isn't a better tablet in terms of pure processing power. The productivity apps are more robust than anything on Android. OpenOffice, QuickOffice and the like just fall short for anyone who is serious about getting work done. Android is still too juvenile at this stage. IPS isn't much better but if you're determined to make that mistake, the iPad 2 is the smartest way to do such a dumb thing. It's more expensive than a XOOM but costs less than the ASIA EEE Slate (the Win7 one) or the Lenovo Thinkpad X220. Those are powerful tablet like machines that are great for the enterprise.

I couldn't disagree more. There's nothing juvenile about the Xoom or android. The Xoom is for people who enjoy making the tablet their own. But YMMV.

Sorry man, the iPad is really good at many things and really bad at many things. Most importantly though, the iPad is the dumbest way to do a smart thing (usually, there are exceptions). If you are truly smart, you don't need preschool level hand holding, or ridiculous restrictions, to get things done.
Android is far more likely to be used by smart people than an iPad. Sorry but it's true. This doesn't mean there are no smart people using iPads, it simply means there are more dumb people using iPads than there are dumb people using Xooms(or other Android tablets). I say this because it's simple logistics. If you are dumb and you are looking at tablets, the only guidance you are likely to get is to buy an iPad. Just go into most retail outlets and watch what they push on the inexperienced.
Also, I agree that the best tablets will be the tablets that run a full OS. However, we are at least 10-12 months away from Windows 8. I wouldn't recommend a Windows tablet until Windows 8 is released.
Having said all this, I don't really like to call people dumb. Less experienced is a more appropriate description most of the time. There are, however, some people who really are just dumb.
I have had the iPad, several crappy and cheap Android tablets, The Nook Color, Acer Iconia A500, HP Touchpad, and (as of yesterday) the Motorola Xoom.
I chose the Xoom because I think it will receive the most love from Google in the future. This is for obvious reasons. I also chose the Xoom because it has accessory and dock options, expandable memory slot, and HDMI out without any proprietary adapters. I have just started to mess with this device but I do like the feel of it and it seems to be very well built.
My initial impression, in comparison to the Iconia, is that the performance is much smoother. One of the things about the Iconia was that the stock rom was very laggy at times. I haven't noticed this with the Xoom yet. Also, there isn't any add-on crap on the Xoom either. I prefer mostly stock Android, and the Iconia had a couple (in my opinion stupid) enhancements. This may explain the difference in performance. The only cool thing, I will miss, on the Iconia is the full size USB port.
I look forward to seeing what I can do with this device. It should work well with my SGS II.
Yea..im gonna wait until after Christmas and grab me a Xoom. mainly cause i don't have the money now lol. Or else i'd grab one now. But im happy playing with my Flashed GTab for the moment.
Don't know why i NEED a Xoom. Maybe the sexiness of it. Im not a Flasher. (Mine was already flashed when i got it). So Xoom already having 3.1 and upgradeable over the air right? Should be good enough for me.

It's quite a good price. I think it should suit you fine.
Don't misunderstand. I recommended the iPad 2 for business solely because of the raw power of the cpu and the gpu. When combined with the robustness of the productivity software, it's a smarter choice for business for the money.
This isn't an emotional choice. If I had what I wanted, it would be something as powerful as the A9 processor with that gpu running win8.

Which Android tablet should I buy at of these?

Okay well I want to get a new tablet not really sure about if I want a 10inch or a 7inch. But currently right now I know the place were I will be buying the tablet. I can choose from any of these tablets here
Buy the best Chinese Android Tablet PC on Lightake.com
The reason I can only buy from there is that I could get a really good price for them(not the original prices that are shown, I can get good discounts since I am a pretty big customer) anyways which tablet do you think I should get. I was leaning against this one though
http://lightake.com/detail.do/sku.P...Core_ARM_Cortex_A9_WIFI_Tablet_PC_Black-46750
it seemed nice because it has Android 3.2, and a Nvidia Tegra2 processor. But maybe I am mistaken or something, and don't even know which of those tablets have the best processor/ram. Here is a OPAD P10 Tegra2 Tablet PC performance test : OPAD P10 benchmark of it. Is that supposed to be good? That benchmark was done on it when the tablet was on Android 2.2 though it says.
Anyways which one out of all should I get. Please don't like me to other websites. If I had to choose one from those websites which should I get?
If this is in the wrong section please move it.
it's only 512 RAM
everything else is pretty decent
You choose which u want its almost same

I wouldn't buy a Tegra 2 tablet right now. I've got an Asus Transformer and it's not as smooth as you'd expect from a dual-core even overclocked, the browser crashes when it runs out of memory which it does too often and Tegra 2 brings its own problems with video playback.
I'd wait a while.

Biggest let down with the 10.1 was the lack of highdef video playback capability.
So should I buy that tablet? What about the one right next to which is also 10 inch but has Froyo. I bet I can upgrade that to Honeycomb though. But how do the specs compare?

Blackberry playbooks are for sale $199
it's a dual core processor and it can run android apps
heck, it can even be hacked to run android like the hp touchpads
if you want to spend $130-ish on some medium quality tablets, might as well spend just a little bit more to get a quality one.
or see if you can still get hold to one of those $99 hp touchpads and install android on it
99$ touchpads now go for 200-250$.. Playbook is a good one, nice solid device but does not run full android, only android apps...and thats only leaked, not official, still awaiting official release..

Is Tegra 2 still good enough?

I just returned my Prime to Best Buy due to the "Serial Number Unknown" bug. I don't feel like waiting for ASUS to fix all its issues, so I'm looked around for an alternative. I can get a brand new, 32GB, original Transformer for $399 from a reputable merchant. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger, but my only concern is how long will Tegra 2 still be fast enough. What do you guys think? $399 for a new 32GB TF seems to be a decent deal.
Most phones and tablets will continue to be Tegra 2 (and comparable) this year. The TF101 can be overclocked reliably to 1.5GHz. There are multiple problems with the next gen suport chips. I don't like being a paid beta tester.
Cheers!

I love my Transformer, I would easily purchase another one before I purchased a TF201..
However, since I already have a original Transformer, I'm looking to see how the TF700T turns out. That 1920x1200 screen really has me excited. If the Tegra3 GPU is capable enough to remain nice and smooth when pushing that many pixels, I will probably go that route for my next tab.
Thanks for the replies. I think I may order the TF101. The TF700 is overkill for me. Plus, I don't want to spend $600 and be a beta tester again. I learned my lesson the TF201.
The tf201 has way too many issues. I would buy a second transformer before I bought a prime at this point. Tegra 2 will still be be made for mobile devices for the next 3+ months at least.

Best reasons for Tegra 2 not being good enough: A.) You've got to have more cores or you an unhappy w^Huser; B.) You crave the most powerful THD graphics; C.) user specific needs (maybe 1080p video decode?)
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I just placed my order for the TF101. With ICS and maybe an overclocked kernel, it should hold me over to the next great tablets come out next year.
I honestly could see using the TF101 for another couple years... I had a Droid Eris that I managed to keep around for over 2 years and this thing seriously flies in comparison.
If I do end up upgrading to the TF700T sometime, I'll probably still use my TF101 everyday in some capacity. I don't replace devices... if I get another, I'll keep using the TF101 til it breaks or is no longer relevant.

I'm the opposite. I buy something, and when I want something better, the old one usually goes on eBay. Sometimes people on there give me more than what I paid for an item when it was new, or pay me more for an old/used item than I paid for the newer model.

[Q] Best Tablet?

I'm off to the US for easter, and have been after a tablet for a while. I was wondering what the best tablet is. Many people say the Transformer Prime is, but is that only for the keyboard? I can spend $800 or £500 so I dont really have a budget. I'd prefer android, but I'll take iOS as well.
Should I not buy one and wait?
TL;DR whats the most powerful and best quality tablet going?
Sorry if there's already a thread on this, I wanted an up to date result and I had a quick look.
iPad
u could go for an iPad or a BB Playbook.......they r better.....buh android is also good.....buh the tab procession is very slow....i wud prefer an iPad coz i hv used all......
Android: Galaxy Tab 7.7
iOS: Wait for the iPad 3
Android: ASUS Transformer Prime or if you want something cheaper ASUS Transformer, but the Prime is better and newer
iOS: Wait for the iPad 3 (which will be out in a few days)
I'd personally go for android
Also if you are a dev(or some sort of related) or wanna go deep in the system or modify/customize your OS then buy an Android Tablet since the iOS is more for businnes people
A little click to the 'Thanks!' button if I helped you
EDIT:
I'm not sure about the Transformer Prime but I guess you can find the first Transformer for less than $800
I Prefer to the samsung tab
Thanks guys, Ill press the thanks button when I'm next on my laptop, just wondering is the transformer series still worth it without getting a keyboard?

Good advice, I'm thinking about a tablet too, definitely Android. I have my eye on the Nexus tab in the news lately...

I don't think that I can say something definite, but the ASUS Tablets seem to be the best ones out there. I saw the Transformer, the Galaxy Tab(both the 7" and the 10.1"), the Acer Iconia Tab A500, and the iPads(1st and 2nd).
In my opinion Best one as hardware quality(Wifi, etc.) is the iPad. iPad also wins by its incredibly strong case. You feel it as one single piece...
The Galaxy Tabs lack the quality of the case and I don't think that the hardware is good too.
The next one that leads in the case quality is the Transformer(the 1st one, not the PRIME). I'm not sure about the hardware..
The Acer Iconia Tab's case is so bad. I mean when you take it in your hand you get the feeling of holding a toy.
About the dock...
I wouldn't buy it without the keyboard since there's another battery on the dock. And it helps in putting the tablet on a table etc. e.g when you are watching a movie and you don't wanna keep the tablet in your hand
Sorry I wrote a little too much.
I hope I'm helping
That's great thanks, I think Asus is the way to go, I'm also thinking about archos for the video format support

The kogan range is good but so is the advent Vega which is awesome with its capacitive 10.1 inch screen and dual core 1Ghz proccessor
Hope this was helpful

Well, as far as I know you are able to use other Media Players such as MoboPlayer, Vital Player, etc... And they are both free..
You need to think carefully about what you are going to use it for. You mention video, for example, and choosing an ipad will have significant consequences* if, like me, most of your video collection is avi format gathered from here there and everywhere.
*unless you jailbreak it.
I think rather than look for the 'best tablet' - which will change from month to month, have a clear think whether you want to go down the Android or Apple route. Some questions to ask yourself:
1) What other devices I have - are you mainly PC or apple based and if the latter, are you happy with the itunes method of doing stuff? How will all these devices talk to each other?
2) What are you going to use it for?
3) What SIZE you want it to be - have a good look at the 8-9" models from Samsung - in comparsion to the ubiquitous 10" models. Sometimes bigger isn't better.
4) DEALS (check out www.hotukdeals.co.uk)with the £ so weak, prices just aren't hugely favourable in the US at the moment and several very capable tablets are being sold off with good discounts in the UK.
I will be using it to watch youtube videos, films, play games, suft the web, mostly media consumption.
I use a macbook pro, and itunes is really my only option sync wise, which Im fine with. I prefer android but think the ipad has better apps. I'd go for a large tablet as it wouldnt really leave the house.
I have owned both android and iOS products and get along with both, I rooted/jailbroke both as well
Sorry if it seems I want others to do the research but I just cant decide, the ipad seems a bit low spec'd for the price

if you want something cheap, go for the archos G9. 1.0ghz and 1.2ghz models are cheaper, but the 1.5 ghz turbo is much faster. They just got updated to ice cream sandwich today

I was seriously considering this, there are a lot of complaints about build quality though, although ive tried it in the shop, i dont know how it'd last

best tablet atm: Galaxy Tab 7.7
Well, it feels to me as though the new prices on the ipad2 would suit you nicely. Plenty of hardware for the money, there, i think.
PErsonally, I just can't STAND itunes and my phone is android - so for the sake of just getting to know one of them well, I stick with with google.
