MAJOR bug in new google voice version - Android Apps and Games

i posted this on the official google help forum last week when the update first rolled out, but haven't gotten any replies (which doesn't surprise me i guess, but i can't believe nobody else has seen this problem)...
i get occasional text messages from certain people who i don't want to talk to for the most part, but i like to be able to see what they're sending me if i so choose. so, i mark those people as spam...their messages still come through but are filtered into my spam folder, which i can then go onto my computer and open the web interface and read.
however, with the newest update of the android app, i'm now getting notifications for all messages, even if they're spam. this is insanity...if i have them marked as spam, why would i want a notification when i get a message from them?
the app used to do it the right way, and just filter them into my spam folder and not notify me that i had a new message...i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the google voice app, and that seemed to get rid of them for about an hour...then they started coming through again.
this is extremely frustrating and i haven't gotten any help (like i said) on the official google voice forum...has anyone else seen this and if so is there any way to fix it?

bump? anyone?

That stinks.
The only thing I can say is that version before this one broke notifications for me (and many others according to market comments), so I was using an older version and this new version fixed my notifications.
So, at least there is a history of fixing regressions. Unfortunately, it did take a good couple of months between updates.
No one from google responds on the google groups, but you can try posting here though:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice?hl=en
You can probably find the previous version and use that.

the page you linked to is where i posted it...no response from anyone (google or otherwise), which i find strange (unless nobody is using the SPAM filter, which i'd also find strange).

First world problem !!!!!

My Apps missing apps?

This morning, went to market->My Apps on my Xoom, and it's only showing about half of my apps. No apparent pattern to what is missing (and I can see that market still has them, just its not seeing them associated with my account.) It was fine yesterday, and no updates on my end.
Anyone else seeing this?

When you scroll down your list in MyApps, do you see a list of uninstalled apps after the installed apps? If not, look at the menu (the 4 stacked up lines in upper right hand corner) and click on purchase history. That should have all the apps you've downloaded and you should be able to reinstall the missing ones, unless Google Market thinks they are no longer compatible with your Xoom.

No, they aren't listing as uninstalled, not listing at all. Purchase history on the market.android.com web site is showing them, with install completed. So far, I think I've only seen free apps missing, but need to check more closely. But it's not all free apps, some remain.
Ok, one new data point. My market account is shared between my Xoom and my Photon. Just checked on the Photon and it is still showing apps in my apps that are not showing up on the Xoom (like Adobe Flash.) Very strange...

A simple reboot should solve the problem. It has happened to me a few times at random, but not as of lately. Not sure if the market runs into some issues or the system itself, but after a reboot everything should pop up and be just fine. It always did for me when I had this issue.

Rebooted, no change. Dug further, I'm only seeing paid apps, plus Google Maps and Videos in the list. But if I go in market to one of the other apps (for instance, Kindle), the market page offers open/manage, not install, so at that level it knows I have downloaded/installed the app.
Sent off a "Contact Us" to Google.

Response from Google yesterday asked me to remove updates to Market. Problem was, I haven't received any updates to Market. So latest is that this is a problem they've seen in some other cases, no current fix, but a "specialist" will be getting in touch with me. No further followup today.
eric
Two days, two nags on the support email, no contact from the "specialist".
Found an app that I had installed that wasn't showing up had an update. Navigated to the app in market, and it showed update. Did the update. As the update finished, the app flickered into the My Apps list for about 2 seconds, then disappeared out of the list.
eric
Well, nagged Google again today, at least for a hint of when there might be a fix. Did get a response - basically we know there is a problem, we have no estimate for a workaround or a fix.

Here's what I would try if I were you:
1. Go to the options, applications, manage applications, all, and then scroll down and click the Market. Since you are having major issues it sounds like, I would recommend that you just hit clear data for the Market app. Maybe restart before you open the market again. See if that helps at all.
2. Just out of curiosity I would install the latest market update that was released for phones. I would see if the problem was still persistent there in the new market app. This market was intended for phones at the moment, but it looks like it will support tablets soon. It seems to fit pretty well on the Xoom. If all goes well, maybe you can stick with that one for a bit.
Here you can find the most recent apk for the market that was released for the phones some days ago: Android Market 3.1.3
That's really the only advice I can think of. If you were rooted you would wipe data, caches, and dalvik cache to start a fresh new install to see if that changes anything. On technical speaking terms: there really is not much else you can do if this all does not work for you. Never seen anyone experience this before.
Thanks for the suggestions. Just tried both, and neither made a difference. Actually, pretty surprised 2) didn't make at least something different about the problem. I'm starting to wonder if the problem is something on the server/account side...
Google says they have seen others with the problem and are working on it, guess I'll just have to wait them out.

Sounds like it's server sided to me, which is really odd. I suppose it is a very unknown problem that only a very select few people have run into. Like I said, I have never seen this issue before on the Xoom.
I tried my best to help, but it's beyond anything we can deal with personally. Google says that they are working on this problem, so just hang in there.
Yup, will have to wait for a Google fix. Thanks for the replies!
eric
I'm not sure if you fixed it yet but here goes. I had the same problem; more than half of my apps would not show up under the "My Apps" list, even though if I searched for them in the market I could still update/uninstall them. I also searched through the forums but none of the suggestions helped. I finally fixed it tonight. Here's what I did:
(Oh yeah, you'll need Titanium Backup to be able to use the Market Doctor)
First I went to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications.
Selected the Market. Cleared cache, data, and uninstall updates.
Then immediately (I suggest you have it ready as a background app) I opened Titanium Backup and ran the Market Doctor. The reason i say 'immediately' is because the Market will re-update itself fairly fast so you have to get it done before it does so since I believe the Market Doctor does not work with the new Market.
That was pretty much it. When I opened the Market I saw that all my apps actually showed up in the My Apps list even after the Market updated itself. Hope it works for you.
I think you need to be rooted to use Titanium Backup, don't you? I'm running stock.
Nope, no more followup from Google at all. And now, even if I manually go to the market entry for an app, it won't always show me the "update" button, even though there is an update available.
eric
3 business weeks in, no fix, no workaround, not even an update email that they are still working on it. Google has a lot of customer support ground to cover to be a consumer company, and for now (3 weeks) I can't update my apps.
eric
Still getting the runaround from the Google Android Market Team. "At this time, I'm unable to provide a timeline for resolution, though I can assure you that we're aware of the issue and actively investigating. Thank you for your patience!" every time I nag them for the last 4 weeks. No request for more data from me, debug/logging version to run, etc.
So Monday I asked to have the case transfered to the manager. Get a new email, from "Richard" (no last name, same email address as the prior support member) saying the case had been transferred to him, and saying exactly the same text. Replied asking if there was anything I could provide to help, no response in now two days.
Looks like Google still hasn't learned anything about customer support. Can't wait to see how they do with Moto if the deal goes through...
eric
So "Richard" wrote back, explaining that they all use the same email address, and carefully avoiding answering my question about his role, i.e. was he really a supervisor/manager.
He told me that they have identified the source of the problem, so don't need any further information from me. No, there is not a fix available of any kind, and he doesn't know when there will be one. No, there is no work around other than calling up each app individually in Market and seeing if there is an update (not very practical for my large number of apps.)
At this point, I'm tired of beating a dead horse. I know we aren't Google's customers, we're their product, but they still have to learn to take user satisfaction seriously.

Not sure what to say at this point. If it was more widespread it would have been fixed right away. But, if it appears that they have now identified the problem, the coders will resolve it within days from now.
My final suggestion is to make a new email account altogether and try that. See if it still is the same problem. If so: It is your device, not Google.

It's not the device, because the problem is also replicated on the web site. Also, remember the Xoom is the reference device for Honeycomb (and I'm running stock), so still a Google issue if it is Xoom specific.
Given it's been a month and they haven't been interested in getting any further data from me, I'm not overly optimistic that it will be fixed in the next few days, but I'd love to be proved wrong.

Oh I hear ya man. I'm just not sure what else to tell ya, sorry man.
Keep crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. You've done your part as a customer by contacting them and letting them know the problem, and they seemed to have identified the issue now. So I'd say you're in better shape than you previously were at the beginning.

Google's solution for old devices and unwanted apps showing in Market/Play

There are thousands of complaints made of the past couple years about old devices/apps showing in Market/Play with nothing more than "we're looking into it" response. Being one of those people I contacted Goggle about this and continued to do so until I received something other than the typical run around. After multiple emails back and forth between myself and Google about old devices (or in my case, the same device multiple times) and unwanted/removed/no longer available apps listed in Market/Play accounts, I have finally received a solution but it's not what you think. Google's solution;
"If you create a new GMail account, you will have a clean record of
apps. You could also switch to another phone (outside of the Android
ecosystem)."
So create a new account and repurchase your apps or leave Android. Umm...thanks?
Emails and support forum posts accomplish nothing to resolve this, submitting this to portal may make some progress towards a solution.
I'll choose the latter option. Maybe if enough people do, Google will make at least some attempt at fixing their product.
Sent from my SGH-I777
If this does make portal and spreads to the other sites with no resolution from Google then that may be the only option left.
The excuse that there's no way to purge/clean the DB is laughable at best. If there was no way to do so then purchased apps released by dev's who's accounts have been closed would not have auth fail issues. This happens because the app/dev DB has been removed/purged from the system. This means the functions to maintain the DB are already in place.
I'm guessing that nobody other I cares about this so kill it with fire.
I care a little bit, I think it is ridiculous that there is no option to do this, but I am not about to give up android at this point in time.
Same here, I think Google's reply was the dumbest thing I have ever heard a company say, but I don't think this is a big enough issue to leave android.

I can see one reason they don't want to enable this feature. But it's not like they are admitting this is a reason.
If you can delete devices and someone compromises your gmail account they can delete your device.
I'd say a viable solution would be to be able to delete a device if it's been inactive for >6 months
And at least one of my first phones has fallen off the list, but that was a long time ago.
A few months ago, someone hacked my gmail and associated their phone with my account. I have no way of kicking them off my account because Google has a "I can't see it so it's not a problem" attitude.

The Definitive Guide to Threaded MMS Group Chat on Android

So I got bombarded with 2 different sets of group texts from 2 different sets of friends who are iphone users and after the frustrating ordeal I decided to do some serious research.
Here's what I found (mods please move this if its in the wrong place) :
The state of affairs and summary aka the Short Version:
A couple of people are working on an OS level version for ASOP (not the Google core team frustringly and unfortunately).
Use Go SMS Pro or Handcent whichever one works better for you now.
I'm writing this post as a cry for help for those working on this though I'm not affiliated, just somewhat of an informed spectator.

The Long Journey Version:
The quest to get this done as far as I can tell began with this xda thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774990
And 2 years later a member of our commmunity (who join specically to post about this as you can see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21539987#post21539987 )
Created a Google Code Feature Request: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24468
though many had questions about it before. This was probably what really set things in motion for a solution.
The standard answer to those with desire to have group / threaded mms chat on android has been to use Handcent or Go Sms...
No matter where you look be it here on xda, andriodcentral, droidforums, you name it.
Handcent was the first on the the scene with this working: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1559824
Go Sms a few months later: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1680704
And to prempt all the use <GroupMe/Whatsapp/etc.> posts... I tried to get my friends to do that and they weren't having it. Immediately just started sending new mms group chats :/
And I mean can you blame them? Why install a new app when it just works for you by default?
And I'm an old school smartphone hacker (talking flashing windows mobile 5 roms) who loves a good dig into this kind of stuff; so here was a shiny new thing to hack
My personal story:
For reference I had started this journey on a Sprint HTC Evo 4G and more recently got the Evo 4G LTE which I am on now.
Handcent
I had been using handcent since their inital 4.0 release with the feature but then it started screwing up on me in a number of ways which I reported to them in an email.
the just of which is this:
So I would send messages to the thread and one of several things would happen:
1) it would just eat the message (that is to say it I would press send the message would disappear from the text box like it was going to send and then just do nothing. My friends would say they never got the message)
2) it would work flawlessly (messages disappears from textbox. shows up in green in the thread. friends respond normally)
3) it would wait a while and then finally show up in the original thread
4) it would wait a while then open a new thread to send the message (friends would be confused about new thread, but since they aren't as technical as me about software just carry on with convo in original thread. Confusing us all. It would show up as a new thread on their phones too though )
5) it would wait a while then give up (message would show back up in text box as if I had saved it as a draft)
Click to collapse
But the problems were only on the sending side. All messages sent to the group would show up in a group thread prorperly.
Go SMS
So I decided to try out Go Sms. And with it sending works flawless for me but... threading not at all. Every message that is supposed to be in the thread would show up in each indivudual sender's thread...
So I had an epiphany. I could have handcent do the downloading and threading... and have Go Sms do the sending. Which worked like a charm for about a day...
The Event or the reason you are reading this long post
Then the phone crashed... and after a restart things looked fine but then it happened.
I have two 2 different groups threads going one with 6 people in and one with 8.
They all had stuff they wanted to talk about today. Here was the ultimate test for the system right? Failed miserably.
Right now I've got about 8 threads with varying texts that should only be in 2 threads.
I was furious. Its crazy annoying when a conversation is going on and you can't figure out the context properly with that many people. Luckily I had the old threads that had worked to respond in but the new messages were all over the place.
I think uninstalling and then reisntalling first Handcent then Go SMS got it back working again but if I have to do that alot it will get annoying because these groups aren't going anywhere.
And this whole mess is a band aid. Not a solution.
Research time.
I need to know why this isn't working.
I mean long press one of those messages. Long story short it is an mms with extra numbers in the to: field.
Or even simpler all an MMS is a text file with some xml tags tossed in there for metadata. Your carrier sends you an sms with a link in it for where to download the text file from.
This cannot be that hard to fix and if it is I want to know why.
Google (search) time.
I searched for the Google Code thread I had seen a while back first. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24468
843 stars. Many comments by people just as baffled as me this isn't done already.
I even have a post there asking about where the code is so I could try to poke around.
Then I remembered I had just had a good conversation with one of the chrome developer tools devs on Google Groups so I decided to look there too
More info: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/android-contrib/Oh254kDdCas
Apparently a guy tweeted the person who is the lead Google Employee over AOSP and he told him to post there. Then the thread got closed because they had no soultion...
BUT wait! There is hope!
Shortly after that, a guy started working on a solution. Check his stuff out here.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...07431-group-text-messaging-jb-achieved-2.html
And this person is freaking amazing because he has gotten this far with little prior knowledge of the project, java, android, git or gerrit to begin with.
Here is also the github where he is working on his stuff https://github.com/vivekvasani
And the trails ends there.
His last commit was about 2 weeks ago and he was asked to contribute it to master a 3 days ago
I'm posting all this to say if there is anyone out there listening who cares and can help this guy get this done please do.
Its ludicrous that we don't have this completely solved yet.
Thanks for you time,
Will

You're welcome. Thanks for appreciating it.
And I've got it pretty stably working now.
Here's my setup:
1) Install Handcent first.
2) Make it default sms provider.
3) Turn on threading (it does this really well)
4) Install Go Sms
5) Set it's (Go Sms) option to send group mms in the send settings (its sending works well)
6) disable notifications in handcent if you don't want double notifications
7) MAKE SURE to disable popups in both programs
- I think this is what was causing the fc's and the crashing. They both try to access the sender's thread and download the mms to get the text but have to fight over access.
Just as a side note the MMS app on recent Motorola phones does group messaging perfectly. On my RAZR MAXX both the GB and now the ICS version is great. My iPhone friends use it all the time and it does it perfectly. No issues with lost messages or miss-threaded messages. Same for my friend using an Atrix 2 (on AT&T)
Perhaps someone can rip the APK for other people to use?
Also Verizon wireless in the US offers a SMS/MMS app for free on Google Play that also does group messages. I used to use this on my older phone which didn't naively support it.... sadly it won't install on non Verizon phones but perhaps someone can port that? I'm quite sure this is nothing but an artificial limitation.

:/ I'd really rather use the default android messaging app. I'd just like it to be able to do group texts. I'd love it if this enhancement ended up in CM10 or something. Did I misunderstand your original post? I thought you were saying that someone was working on a modified version of the default messaging app that would be able to handle group texts.
And adrianblack, you're saying that the default messaging app handles SMS/MMS group texts? That sounds pretty much exactly like what I'm looking for. Only issue is that I think a lot of the apps on the stock roms (i.e. non AOSP) are pretty tied in to those particular roms. Which is why they can't just port the camera or contacts from sense and put it on the Galaxy Nexus. Without the rom behind it, the apps won't run. Hopefully the messaging app on the RAZR MAXX isn't like that. Or, at the very least, it'll give someone something to reverse engineer in order to get the AOSP messaging app working with group texts.
Nope no misunderstanding.
Its just not done yet.
You can check out those threads I linked to.
The guy got it working but it hasn't been merged in anywhere.
Which means nobody in any of the release teams has tested it which means it will probably be a while before you could just download or flash it.
I was just sharing my, admittedly kludgy, way of having it work now

I hope it gets merged with CM soon. Both Go SMS and Handcent suck.
just recently found out about handcent working with group MMS, cannot wait to have this in CM10!
From the androidcentral thread linked in op, there are at least two CM10 nightly based ROMs with Vivek Vasani's (playa1257) changes included:
One from invisiblek and the other by euroskank
I've seen some threads thath this has been added to the AOSP JB 4.2 messaging app (sorry for no links. I'm a new user).
Can anyone confirm?
Has this issue been fixed yet? I do a lot of group texts with several different people (for my job mainly) and have been using GO SMS on an EVO3D for some time now. It doesn't work terribly (still slow though) when it is only 1 or 2 messages at a time (as long as I am in a good service area or else it doesn't work for ****) but when the messages come flying in (or god forbid I have more than 1 text chain going at once) the phone lags so badly that it is unusable. I can't see the messages and can't even get a message out because the phone is so busy processing the incoming messages. It freezes the phone until the activity settles down.
Is this a problem on ALL Android phones or is it because I have an older EVO3D? I am going to be purchasing a new phone in the near future and if group texting isn't even working on the flagship phones I am afraid I am going to have to jump ship to the iphone. Can anyone provide an update as to the status of group text on Android flagship phones?

[Q] Add an extra person to existing group SMS Hangout?

I setup and sent some SMS to a group of contacts. I have realised that I need to add an extra person to the group. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to accomplish this. Searched extensively already: the only thing I've found reference to is an 'Add Person' icon that does not display for me.
If I go into the Hangout, clicking on the list of names at the top serves to activate the < which takes me back to the main Hangouts list.
If I access the People and Options sub-menu it displays the current "People in this Hangout" but there is no option to add anyone new.
Any suggestions please?
KitKat 4.4.2

Just came upon this doing a google search looking for the same thing.
As far as I can tell, it's not possible. Did you ever figure it out?
I can't comprehend how something made by google and being pushed so hard in Android is so user unfriendly. How is this not an option??

No, although I haven't tried in the updated versions of Hangouts, but I'm guessing if you're just posting here that it's still not working. I agree it seems like a basic function for something they have forced upon us.

Stock OnePlus 7 Pro possible bug or virus with Varo banking app

Here is a Link a video I just posted on YouTube showing what I'm referring to below did blur out any and all of my personal information, I hope that it does not violate and rules, laws, or policy's. *Side note I somehow messed up the audio & I don't usually sound like a dude
I don't know the correct place for this post even after reading the thread for such things and I did try the search function and still was unsure.
If this post is deleted for incorrect topic forum please advise me of the correct place, if there is one.
I am having this weird thing going on with my phone and I cannot find anything similar to the issue online, and it's highly probable it's somehow user error.
Since I don't know where to turn to for advise (I am aware factory resetting it will probably resolve it but I want to know what is causing it as well as fixing the issue), I figured I would start here as this has been the best source of information on past android questions I've had in the past.
I have contacted the Varo Bank (the new Varo Bank app) support and their developers through the their beta tester app. No response yet (5 days).
The reason for this post... Over the past 2 weeks or so I will hear a (new) tone then my phone opens up my main banking app (Varo Bank). This happens again and again sometimes it only happens a few times a minute others it's 6-7 times in a minute to where my phone is nearly unusable. It can happen anytime my phone is unlocked including while I'm on a call, after restarting phone, on and off wifi, cellular, &/or airplane mode, even while I am already in the banking app. I originally assumed it had to do with some sort of shortcut or where it was located on my home screen. So first I moved it, then when that didn't work, I deleted it for every page except my app drawer. Since non of those issues resolved the issue, I checked for software updates of both my phone and the app itself, yet they were both at the most recent versions. Although I NEED the app for obvious reasons, I decided to uninstall the app. After it was uninstalled I restarted my phone and as soon as I unlocked it I heard the "Ba Ding" sound again, but this time it took me to the Google play store for the same Varo Bank app I had just uninstalled. At this point I joined their beta testers then reinstalled the Beta version of the Varo Bank hoping that if it is the banking app that's causing the issue that would resolve it or I would have a better chance of contacting their developer's or technical support. I have sent 2 emails to their general Support and left a comments on the play store for the app which goes to the developers and is not a public comment. It has been 5 days and I have yet to get a response that wasn't autogenerated.
Sorry for the poorly written, LONG post, this is just driving me crazy. Thanks in advance for any advice, comments or possible direction on where to turn for answers or support.

Hi, to me this sounds like a really terrible bug on the banking app you are using or a virus. Would assume the latter.
I have two separate banking apps on my phone and never ever experienced my apps opening on thier on, even redirecting me to install it again after uninstall.
If it were a phone bug, it would do this with any app not just your banking app.
I could be wrong in my assumptions, just trying to advise you to be careful.
I would, backup my data, format and start fresh.

Ya I figured as much, I just really loathe the thought of having to do a fresh install, because my phone storage organization is non existent. Regardless I'm hoping to draw some attention to the issue, with whatever the issue may be. Varo the name has been around for awhile, but they just recently became an actual independent bank (they were under Bank Corp before.
I can't be, nor will I be the only customer with this issue not to mention it's my understanding that you "have" to use the app, due to very limited web capabilities. I have not verified that myself though.
So we'll see if this helps get since attention for the issue
I am getting the same error, but only with the Varo app, nothing else.
I have the same issue that just started this week on my Pixel 7. Did you just add it to your GPay or Wallet recently?
