[Q] New to roms - General Questions and Answers

Hey Guys,
I'm new to android, (used iOS quite alot) and im loving the customisation that you can do on it!
I've messed around with Launcher Pro and some other widget stuff, and i've started reading about ROMS/Mods?
So far i've seen Cyanogenmod 7 and MIUI. I've got a few questions
Are there more?
What are the benefits of modding/romming?
how easy is it to revert back to the stock?
Which ones the best to use?
If say im running Cyanogenmod 7 and Ice Cream Sandwich gets realeased on HTC, if i update, will it wipe the phone?
I'm using the HTC Sensation XL

yes there are more roms out there
installing a custom rom can improve your phone's performance and furthermore let you customize/mod the rom the way that you like it
There is no best rom this depends on your needs
yes the phone will be wiped

Currently im on HTC sense version 3.5 and android 2.3.5
Performance wise, my phone is still ok. Its new, so fairly fast, which ROM would you recommend?
Do i lose any features when installing Roms?

look i never owned an HTC phone so i dont know much bout it
you could do some research but currently 2.3.x roms are pretty fast

Hmm,
How easy is it to revert back to stock ROM?

oh im sorry i forgot to answer that
you can easily create a nandroid backup and go to recovery menu to revert back to the rom you have backed up

EDIT: Or just flash the stock rom , usually in the thread about your phone

Thanks!
Im really thinking of doing it hmm

yes, its easy.. Backups can easily be made whenever you want.. You just have to learn how..
One good thing to know though, is that the important onces, which is calendar and contacts, do get backed up in gmail.. Thats why im brave enough to try out the roms..

Aria Problem (Rooting)

I have an Aria and I rooted (idk exactly how i did it).
I have htc sync and adb install on my win7 machine.
I used superoneclick the first time I rooted my phone.
I got my wife the same phone. I went to root it, superoneclick worked (so I thought).
I went into reboot into recovery and I end up with the UPSIDE RED TRIANGLE WITH THE EXCLAMATION MARK!!!!!!!!!!!
I wipe my machine free of HTC and rooting product. Reinstalled adb and then used revoked and am still SOL.
I have superuser installed and have rom mananger installed, but I cannot get into recovery. ROM Manager even installed the latest clockwork mod.
But I'm getting the UPSIDE RED TRIANGLE WITH THE EXCLAMATION MARK!!!
HELP!!!!! PLEASE!!!
I tried to unroot with superoneclick and this is what I get:

I tried it again superoneclick froze on me.
check out the Aria Superthread Guide
I'll give it a whirl....
OK the .exe stops downloading from megaupload at 33.4mb. I even bought the premium.
Any other ideas?
SOLUTION!!!
So I found the ROM on the HTC site:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/aria-att/downloads/
I flashed it.
Then I got this error:
Code:
Internal error: am reported error starting service
I googled it and I found this forum:
http://androidforums.com/aria-all-things-root/248603-unrevoked-error-am-reported-error-starting-service.html
Great success!!
I reverted unrevoked to 2.1 and it worked!!!
glad you worked it out

I have a Samsung infuse and I tried 3 versions of the Superoneclick root and it keeps bricking my phone or Titanium backup will not restore how I had it before.. not sure what's going on. I used 1.8 before but I had to return the phone because of GPS hardware issues. Now my new phone will not root.

[Resolved] rooting problem - desire

hi.
I've tried search and not managed to resolve this, though I'm sure I'm missing something simple.
Just been given a htc desire, to replace my spica, and want to remove simlock and root (for apps2sd, adblock etc)
i removed simlock using the bootable iso downloaded from here
trying to follow the rooting guide for the One click Radio S-OFF, SimUnlock tool, and I'm hitting "unknown error, probably connection
using search I found a suggestion to use adb shell, followed by su, which gives permission denied.
I then downloaded terminal emulator and typed su, permission denied.
So I guess I don't have root, even though I installed visionary+ and clicked temproot now followed by attempt permroot now, and the reboot.
What should I do to complete rooting the phone?
Thanks

I don´t know if this will help you but I just used this guide to root my desire, it was my first time and all went fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
ha ha, I was a bit too late. Glad to hear you got it sorted.
If your interested in a good rom, I recommend RCMixS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988570
and this script to speed up the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111145
works great
thanks for the rom suggestion, having had no end of problems (mainly lockups) after flashing my spica I'm gonna steer clear for a little while...
..though I am very, very tempted
If I had the time I would be flashing all day!

[Q] Problems with adb

Hi all. I'm running my g2x on tonyp's Paranoid android Ics build (the last one) and I'm getting problems with adb. Everytime i use adb pull or push i get error device not found.
example
1|[email protected]:/ # adb pull /sdard/home
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5038 *
* daemon started successfully *
error: device not found
If I use reboot or top it works but pull or push doesn't work. I'm still new to adb so any and all help would be appreciated, also I'm using lubuntu 12.10 32 bit.
