Hi friends I have Nexus S i9023
I have just rooted the phone for the first time
current android version is :2.3.6
I have ROM manager and Super user installed
I downloaded the ICS build for Nexus s WIP
trying to install it from ROM manager and also from RECOVERY but it gives me a triangle exclamation mark of android ....
not working
tried several times but no result
please help meee ......
From what I was reading about it last night no one has gotten to work yet. Be patient or try sdk port until some one gets it up and running better.
Nevermind I see there is a new one.
But it also sounds like you still have the stock recovery.

Hi there! I wish to flash my stock rom and put ice cream sandwich on my I9020!
Can't wait for the original update!
How can i do? I've the stock recovery but I've the bootloader unlocked!
After the flash will i be able to put stock roms on it?
Thanks everybody!
the reasons are because you are using rom manager. I would not recommend rom manager at all. Boot into recovery and flash and you would not have an exclamation mark. How? Power off device. Hold volume up and power to boot into bootloader. Next scroll to recovery using volume buttons and press power to select. In recovery wipe everything. Next install zip from sd card and select the ics rom. After it is done reboot. Good luck!
Hit thanks if i helped!

After the flash you WOULD NOT be able to get OTA updates. However custom roms are always better
I should wait till there is a FULLY working ICS build and just try some Gingerbread ROMs.
I'd advise you to read alot of instructions from different places to get and idea of flashing as your new to it as pointed out b4 i think the problem is that ur recovery isn't present you can install it via ROM-manager by clicking the 1st option on it

^This guy would be correct. The problem is that you didn't install the clockwordmod recovery. You are still on stock recovery which you cannot use to flash custom roms

Hi I am a follower of LeeDroid on Sensation and thus far have always been able to find the answers to my questions without any issues. But now I am starting to dabble with root on Xoom. Needless to say I had a LOT of issues as it's not nearly as straight forward as my Sensation. I resolved most of my issues and am finally ready to install Team Tiamat's rom. Reboot into recovery, choose the zip and it freezes on Unpacking New Files.... I've been at this all night and really would like to go to bed knowing that it's installed and I can mess with it tomorrow. Any ideas?
Thanks so much for the anticipated help!
Like what excatly is happening? You do have the CWM recovery flashed to the recovery partition, right? What have you've done so far? What guide you've followed thus far?
Pretty much rooting the XOOM is pretty straight forward, unlock the bootloader (adb reboot bootloader, fastboot oem unlock, on xoom press volume down then up and repeat once to unlock), boot back into the bootloader and flash the recovery (adb reboot bootloader, fastboot flash recovery recovery_image_name.img, fastboot reboot), then reboot into the recovery and flash either the root files or the ROM you want to use.
^^^
Totally agree. Once custom recovery is installed flashing rom is same as with other devices:
Boot into recovery.
wipe data/reset
install zip
choose zip file
Done
................
Avoid flashing through rom manager.
You need to have custom recovery tailored for Xoom (not what is available through rom manager)
.................
The rooting process is done and I also have already flashed cwm. The problem is when I go into cwm through recovery and attempt to load the tiamat rom it freezes at the step "unpacking new files"....

please check the md5 checksum (given from where you downloaded tiamat).
also flashing takes some time.
do not inturrupt.
Yesterday i flashed it and it took some time(even i thought it is doing nothing).
But it flashed ok.

Great minds and all that!
Hehe...
BTW I have flashed international stock version over US MZ604.
It has last update of 3.1 with micro sd support.
It gives a choice of what to mount(internal or sd card)
2 extra wallpaper also there.
Let's see how it performs.
Are you using the correct version of the recovery? This seems to be a common mistake made by quite a few people. You need to be using this version and loading the ROMs and kernels to a Microsd card. "Newer" versions do not use the microsd card so you would be flashing from the same internal memory that you are trying to flash over.

What he said, read the pre-requisites very carefully on the ROM page. Also what ROM are you trying to download and what version of honeycomb are you currently running? What xoom? Wifi or 3g?
I was finally able to get it done. The issue it turns out was my own impatience coming out. I just had to be patient and eventually it installed.
Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

I'm glad it worked. I know what you mean about being impatient...sometimes it seems like nothings happening and in fact, you just need to hang in a little longer.
Hi, XDA, i'm new and come here for roms and decided to try Virtuous Inquisition rom, so I flashed it and my phone wouldn't stop boot looping.. and I didn't make a backup so now i'm screwed, I've tried different roms but most of them bootloop except for cm 7.1 (which is total crap).. I just want 2.3.4 with htc sense and original factory state back and I cant find any Official firmware online... If somebody could help that'd be great =) It's like my second day with the phone :L..

Well I first rooted yesterday, i got S-off, then got clockwork mod recovery and then perma rooted using the zip file and gained access to super user etc.
Then I decided today that I want ics without sense, so i go to virtous or w/e his name is and put his download in my sd card wiped the cache and data etc and didn't back up, so installed his rom and rebooted my phone and it kept boot looping ...
and now i'm stuck with cm 7.1 which I don't like
I just want official 2.3.4 with sense back peacefully that'd be great
Did you install the required firmware?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Gotta have the correct hboot before flashing ics roms and supercid. To go back to stock find the sensation RUU.
Sent from my MIUI.us Sensation 4G using XDA App
You didn't mention if you SuperCID your phone or not. That is another required step .
Reply
I don't think there's a fully working 2.3.4 with htc sense rom online. You might have to use another rom.
if you want official rom go here
but if you want ics rom, first of all you have to flash correct firmware for the rom and only then flash rom.
All required info is in each rom thread.
I am having the same problem as OP but I have a back up. When installing Virtous Inquisition I get a boot loop and I have SuperCID.

He told you in his post.
He was running the wrong firmware version - most of the ICS ROMs require the newest firmware versions. Which requires SuperCID.
If you don't have the correct firmware version installed -> Bootloop.
HTC Sensation Recovery Mode
I am trying to go in to Recovery Mode pressing Volume down + Power Button simultaneously and nothing happens.. The phone it's starting normally !
In my experience you have to keep hold of the volume down button and then press the power button for a few seconds, while you keep on holding volume down. That always works for me...
ThanksI fixed that thanks god!!! But now another problem starts.. i turn on the phone and restarts over and over after the green sign. I can't access recovery also. I tried to install a recovery putting this file: PG58IMG in to Memory card and then install but no success it does the same I can't access recovery at all. When i try to access it my phone restarts the same when i try to turn it on. If someone one know what to do please tell me...thank you
If you can't access the hboot screen via vol down+power, check that you don't have fast boot enabled. Settings -> power, uncheck fast boot if it is checked. That should help you get to hboot. You can also take your battery out to make the phone fully reboot. And when you don't need the PG58IMG file anymore, remove it from the sd card.
Ok first off...if you have s-off and your rooted.....you also need to flash the proper firmware.
the easiest way to do this is by following this thread verbatim
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
mentioned in this great thread is the following and I quote
"I really want to use the latest ICS! How do I go about doing this?
I get this PM'd to me a lot. The best way I have seen to do it is as shown (Thanks to PaulGiz)
1. Do some reading as this is a bit different and harder than a normal ROM flash.
2. Best way is to place Firmware PG58IMG.zip, ROM and Superwipe script on the root of your SD Card.
3. Shut down phone and remove SD card.
4. Boot phone to Bootloader (Power+Vol down).
5. Move selection to Recovery, but don't select yet.
6. Insert SD, then select Recovery.
7. Flash Superwipe (ARHD Superwipe will reboot when done, others may not) & then Flash ROM.
8. Power down, then boot to Bootloader. Select Fastboot. Say yes to upgrade.
9. Watch the flash. It will flash 3 or 4 things, then reboot to bootloader. Don't panic when screen goes dark. Bootloader will come back and it will finish flashing.
10. Now select reboot.
11. Wait (up to 10 minutes) for ROM to boot up.
12. Set up your phone and enjoy ICS!!!"
read the whole post all info is there...it's really easy.
Thanks to Kohr-Ah i'm enjoying ICS "no-sense"...and just loving my phone..
Hope this helps.

Sounds as if the rom was bad or incomplete and formatted your partitions "boot", & "system". Lucky for you, that you have a NEXUS S. It has fastboot. I would recommend flashing an old stock image of nanroid using fastboot. You will have to go to DEV and find these old images to flash. Not very hard, just follow the instructions they provide. It will be something like boot into your bootloader with an usb cable from your computer to your phone, then flash once in fastboot. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Fastboot
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Did you wipe data and cache before you installed the rom?
If you haven't already, pull the battery, the hold vol up and the power button until you get the fastboot screen. Try recovery from there. IF you can do any of that you're good, you can use mikerowes69 's suggestions above and you should be ok.
Thanks for all help,My phone back on.I thing was the software.I have download again the latest Ice Cream Sandwich firmware for the Nexus S then I used the nexus toolkit 5.3 to pust to phone a new zip then I flasted it and everthing is ok
Hello to all respected members
i have a problem... i read all threads and tutorials on rooting nexus s GT19023 but still no success ...
i bought this phone yesterday so I'm new to this... hope someone kind will explain the details to me ...
bootloader status says : unlocked
but still no root on 4.04
clockmod recovery is installed... so another question
can i install custom rom using clockmod recovery without root access? if possible, then after installing custom ICS rom it will then be rooted>?
thanks in advance for all those who took time in helping me root ICS 4.04 stock rom... i really need root access on this rom... i hope i can install custom rom with cm recovery then have root with custom rom
since im new to this, please suggest the best rom and kernel to use i'm open to suggestions
thanks
if you want your phone rooted, flash this in CWM:
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
then, in app drawer should has Superuser icon.
In other way, if you flash custom rom, it's already rooted, so you don't have to flash that file above again...
thanks savantist ... i flashed custom rom and its working awesome... rooted + kernel... thanks for the reply thread is solved
I'm about to root my nexus s for the first time. I'm running Android 4.04. Quick nooby question..will I lose the contacts n data on my phone memory if I root by flashing that superuser file with CWM recovery..If yes then is there a way to create a NAND backup prior to rooting my device.
Thanks a lot for putting up with my nooby question. Pls help!!!

Flash CWM from fastboot
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
Place the ClockworkMod Recovery Image in the same folder as fastboot (the /tools folder with the Android SDK folder). Power the Nexus S down, and hold Volume Up & the Power button until booted into the bootloader. Connect the Nexus S to the computer via USB. On the computer, open terminal and run:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
The ClockworkMod Recovery should now be installed on the Nexus S.
After that boot into recovery using volume up + power button, then selecting recovery. Now in CWM flash
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Reboot and you have root again.
PRAISE the lord! I have been to 7 different sites and followed their instructions to the letter and no ROOT.... I finally found this post and the signed Super user did the trick THANKS SO MUCH!

hello guys,
Do u guys know how to upgrade andriod version from 2.3.3 to 4.03 - 4.04 for Inspire 4g smartphones ?
Would appreciate for helps
:good:
Are you rooted? If not, you need to root first with the Advanced Ace Hack Kit by attn1 (it's not here; you will need to Google for it). More detailed instructions are in post #7 of the Ace Think Tank thread linked in my signature. If you are rooted with a custom recovery, just backup, full wipe, and flash it from recovery.
I rooted it quite awhile ,i just want to upgrade my andriod version

Do you have a recovery like CWM or 4ext? Make sure it's updated, then just download an ICS ROM, backup your current one, full wipe, and flash.
I did backup everything but question . what does flashing has to do with upgrading andriod version ?
I am quite lost ,sorry about that

"Flash" in the whole custom Android world means to install something from recovery.
Okay wait , so in order to upgrade to 4.0.4 i need to flash a rom and not like doing some stuff for it ?

What do you mean by doing some stuff for it? Sorry, I think I didn't originally grasp how in-depth of an explanation you wanted. In the terminology I understand, yes, you just need to flash a ROM.
1. Download the ROM of your choice; for non-Sense I like aospX from the Inspire 4G Dev forums. Save it in the sdcard in a place you remember.
2. Boot into recovery. You can do this by rebooting and holding power and volume-down, then navigating to recovery with the volume buttons and selecting it with the power button. Or, if you have it as an option when you long-press on the power button, just select recovery.
3. In your recovery, back up your current setup. Different recoveries differ in the exact settings, but find backup and do it.
4. In your recovery, find the wipe options. Wipe /system, /data, and /cache. Note that factory reset means to wipe data and cache only.
5. In your recovery, find the install/flash options. Navigate to the ROM you downloaded and select it. Wait for it to install.
6. Reboot.
Im really sorry about this .
i don't want to flash a new ROM , i want to upgrade my andriod version from 2.3.3 to .4.0.4

But to upgrade, you need to flash a new ROM. The ROM is the upgrade. Since HTC does not have an official ICS for our phone, the only way to get it is by flashing a custom ROM.
