[Q] How to transfer files between Android and iOS

This is not specific to the Charge, but hopefully I'll get some response here.
What is the easiest way to wirelessly transfer files between Android & iOS devices? I've read some options with using bluetooth or FTP. I want something simple anyone could do. I haven't tried it yet, but Hoccer looks like the easiest option I've seen.
I want to transfer large files without wires or existing wifi network. I don't have wifi at home, and don't always want to use a laptop to move files through. I'm looking for something that is point to point. I don't think all iPod's (touch) have bluetooth, so that is somewhat limiting.
Something like Dropbox is a big waste of time and bandwidth in my case.
Also, anything better for android to android file transfer?

[XOOM 2] Xoom 2 Software Frustration

Connected the Xoom 2, to a windows 7 machine.
Insists on letting installing 'Motocast' which I let it...what a complete pile of shi*.
I want to 'sync' a 700MB .avi video, over usb cable, to the device...estimated time? 30 minutes!!! I swear this complete toss of software is insisting to re-encode the entire file to some bullsh*t format of their choice. Is there an option to turn this off and transfer it natively?
Secondly, thankfully, it also installs native 'portable' device drivers, allowing Windows 7 file explorer to browse the device. Great, so I copy the same .avi file and paste it to the device...'Do you want to copy xyz.avi? Your device might not be able to play this file' I am prompted...'yes' I click. Just as it finishes copying (after about 4 minutes...much better) it bombs out, notifying me that because the device cannot play this file it is cancelling the transfer...wtf?!?!
The only interim solution i've found is renaming the extension '.avi' to something like '.proprietrysoftwarecansuckmyballs', copying it, then renaming it back to '.avi' once transfer has completed solves this.
So can anyone offer any 'clean' solutions to my file transfer woes? If theres no improvement, this device will be getting returned next week, which is a shame as the tablet is a great bit of kit, its just a shame the software blows.

Look for "Wi-Fi File Explorer" in the market.

This looks like it only transfers over wifi?
I need to transfer over usb cable.

Had this problem myself, looks like it doesn't come with the drivers. After a bit of searching, I found that the standard driver package works:

Installed that, unplug the USB cable and put it back in - should work fine!

Hey thanks man, that worked a treat.
Just for clarification, does you still prompt you that the device may not support playback of the file, but then successfully transfer it (whereby it would previously error at the last second)?

No idea - haven't had that particular part of the issue myself - the main thing I had was the slowness...

I am a linux user ... i will only have the option to upload files via wifi network ?

I have a Xoom 2 ME and the only way to copy a large movie file to the device was adb.

That's the only usb-way i come up with. I'am on snow leopard and Google's Android File Copy tool does not work.

I guess the same way will work to linux too . Xoom2 has only one partition on the disk ? that the reason not to be able to mount it as a normal usb ? If you root the device is the anyway to great a small 2 Gb for ex partition to use it for easy transfer ?
Off topic about xoom 2 ME . How good the screen and and the battery life are ?

As a Linux User I hoped being able to use MTP... But I tried mtpfs and mtp-tools on several distributions without any luck.
But what is worse is that FTP server applications won't work too! I tried SwiFTP, FTPServer, and some other: the servers are not reachable. It appears that not even a single ping can reach the tablet. I think Motorala have put some kind of firewall in it (maybe it has something to do with the netflix HD certification?).
For me this tablet is actually useless. If I can't find a way to transfer some files on it without using MotoCast today or tomorrow, I will bring it back to the supplier...

You probably hit it on the head about the Netflix certification. I would think about returning it, man.

a solution ?
Thanks to a French forum (frandroid, in the Xoom 2 topic... sorry I can't send links here), I tested a solution to the transfer problem: It is possible to use (on the computer) a server to share the files such as a samba server.
It works fine. But it's not as easy to browse, select, copy and paste file with explorers on the tablet than it is on computers (several windows, keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl-c/v, and so on).
But it's now possible to exchange files with the Xoom 2ME without going through a cloud or using Windows/motoCast.

Sorry for answering so late.
The screen is quite good.
The battery life is terrible compared to my ipad2. Charging needs a lot of time and is very slow. I guess it's because of mini usb only.
Currently i'am using the device as a Kindle Fire replacement, because off the lightweight (KF is heavier and bulky). The books i usually read have more weight than the device itself.
I like it for that.
But i may not be a good adviser because my device is a prototype. It is not smooth and the speakers are terrible.
I think 8,2" is the perfect size for me. The weight is so much better than any other tablet i had.

Try using a terminal on the Xoom 2 and ping the computer you're trying to connect to, while pinging your Xoom 2 from that computer at the same time. It's like you have to force them to see each other before they can start connecting in future.

I used fileexpert to see and download files with smb shared folder on Ubuntu Linux without a problem.

Is there a way to do wi-fi direct PC to phone?

As the title states, just curious if there is a way to make wi-fi direct work between phone and PC or vice-versa. I know there are wi-fi file explorers, but for s single file or picture is there anything for that?

Im pretty sure your phone comes with an app pre-installed for this, but i use airdroid

WiFi direct is only for Samsung devices to other select Samsung devices. It doesn't work with my older Samsung TV, but does work with my friend's brand new Samsung TV. AFAIK, it does not work to connect to a PC.
The other on-device options suck out loud (Kies Air, AllShare Play, etc.). They all require additional software to be loaded on the PC and some are dependent on Samsung's server piece to be operational, which goes down like a $5 ***** faced with a stack of hundreds.
If you want to just 'see' the picture or movie on a PC / Laptop / TV, Settings > More Settings > Nearby Devices is tolerable. It's basically DLNA for the phone. ONLY ALLOW the devices on your LAN that you want to share media to. If you choose Allow All and forget to turn it off, it will share it publicly if you connect to WiFi at McDonald's, Starbucks, Library, etc. PCs show up as Windows-Media-Player, and other devices will be SamsungWiselinkPro or SamsungSmarTV, etc.
I'd recommend to use either Airdroid or WiFi File Explorer and save yourself a LOT of headaches to transfer the files to a PC.

Yeah I have had Wifi File Explorer Pro for a good two years and love it, I was just wondering if there was a better option. Based on the responses above I think I will just stick with what I've got!

If you want to transfer files, Kies Air is actually one of the best choices. It's definitely underrated, probably because of the complicated install process, but once you get the hang of it, it's a very streamlined process.

Most file manager apps support Windows shares, so you can transfer stuff that way too. I use AirDroid though mostly. Heck, you can get an FTP app on your Droid and FTP into it from Windows if you like, make sure you change your IP address in Wifi advanced settings to the one you want to use all the time, and map a network drive in Windows to your phone.

why not an FTP server?
search for the "ftp server" from developer "the olive tree" first of all it's super secure since you can add username and password to it (from the settings) so it's safe even at public wifi hotspots and second It's got 4+ stars! COMMON! lol and the 3rd and the best part (I know you were waiting for this ) It's free
you can copy to/from your phone to/from your computer! just open the app and click on the red power button when it turns green you're good to go it gives you an address you need to type that in your explorer (my documents or my computer would be perfect) and your phone's content is there just be careful not to delete anything you don't know

Air droid is good, but theres a monthly limit. For small amounts of data (I think it's 100MB per month) it's perfect.

Can a tablet replace my computer?

How are you?
So today I started to wonder...
I currently have an iMac computer.
I bought it to edit pictures when I was into photography.
But I since lost interest in photography and slowly sold all my camera gear.
Currently I only use the web browser and iTunes.
I don't need to work on my computer at home. I don't produce documents nor do anything creative. For work I have my office computer.
I don't use applications, as I use Google services through the web browser.
So, I was thinking about selling the computer, buy a nice tablet like the Asus tf700 and keep some money.
My only question is if the tablet is any good to handle my files on the external hard drive, mainly music MP3 libraries and pictures.
Can an app like ES file explorer allow me to create folders, rename files, move them around like finder on a Mac or windows explorer?
Can a tablet read and write files to my USB external HDD?
What do you think of this idea?

Based on your detailed description, a tablet sounds like it will be sufficient for you. But i warn you, it is a significant jump. My 6yr old Dell laptop started acting wonky, and I replaced it with the Asus TF300 in May. It wasn't until September where I truly noticed the productivity advantages.
Also, Asus tablets come with MyCloud, which has Splashtop HD installed by default. Use it. It...is...awesome...and very useful. You still get the "computer" experience from it. Keep that in mind.

for your current demands a the most tablets should be enough but if its potentionaly that your demands could change in the newr furture, you should maybe consider one of the coming W8 Tablets

One thing that I did forget to mention. There are a selected few things that computers do MUCH better than tablets, and probably will never change. Try taking a PDF file with over 200 pages, and search for a word (doesn't matter what word you choose). Your computer is capable of finding all of the instances much faster than your tablet would. Windows and Macs are better at handling numerous files simultaneously than Android. There are some things that I would still turn to the computer for.

that is exactly what i was talking about this could be a good reason for W8 Tablets or the now gratly hyped "Tabbooks"

It really depends on what are u doing on ur pc if you only browse internet, listen to music and play some games, of course good tablet can replace it. But if u use ur pc for work then it could be problem for you imo

[Q] Remotely operate apps (uTorrent, Dropbox)

I've been thinking of making my android phone operate like a stand-alone operating system; i.e. which does not require direct input from the user but can receive input through internet.
I've been trying to setup an architecture in which I place an android phone in my home connected to my wifi, it has uTorrent Beta and some file syncing service (like dropbox, google drive, skydrive, etc.) What I'm trying to accomplish is to operate my phone from my laptop sitting at my office, send a torrent file to my phone lying at home, it picks up the file in uTorrent (or any other torrent client), downloads the file, and later uploads to dropbox or other file syncing service, and after uploading it removes the file from phone.
Can something like this be performed on android? it involves two main obstacles... remote controlling the android via internet, and operating two / three separate apps on android. Is there a better way to do this?

?? no way sir. Wouldnt it be too obvious for any person seeing multiple apps running around on his cell phone?
My office has real bad ass firewalls all around its network. But it allows dropbox or teamviewer etc apps. I used to have a windows computer for this work of mine. I used an Acer Aspire ZG. So whenever I have something to download on torrent I connect to my laptop at home via teamviewer, download the file and then put it up on dropbox again, so i can download it at my office. My work makes me travel a lot to different cities so im not always at my home, thats why i need something like this.
But alas my aspire got burnt in the power spike in my area. I have my old samsung galaxy S android phone as a spare. I see apps like dropbox and utorrent are now available for android. So i thought would a similar server setup be possible on android.
So can you give me any ideas or workarounds?
