This was just below your own question.

first things first
do u have it unlocked? if so then yes u can. i didnt read the whole of what tom said, but that just appears to be clockwork mod install, which by itself can lead u to rootng your xoom( by way of mounting and tranfering root tool to sd, and going from there).
but there is another way using adb if u just wanted to root the stock and add supperuser without doing anything else. u have to be comfortable using adb or i would not advise it.
second post by newage should get u there. have any questions or probs, pm me.

again just untill i get something like this as my sig.

edit: forgot to thank kcrudup for this. is posted in the Attention 4g rooters thread, and prob other places. Thx

Apps to SD card app

Hey all,
I know I just put up my tutorial on how to do this but hopefully this will make things easier for everyone. I'd still suggest doing a nandroid backup first just to make sure but I tested this on my phone so it should work. Just run the app and if this is the first time moving your apps to your sd card(and you want to keep the ones you have) leave the checkbox checked. Otherwise uncheck it. Then just press the buttons that correspond to what you want to do. Enjoy
In order to use this you MUST:
1: Have an apps-to-sd ROM
2: Have your sd card partitioned correctly with FAT32 first and ext2 second.
3: Have busybox already installed to /system/xbin
NOTE: I'll try to help as much as I can but I can't take responsibility for anything this does to your phone. I'm pretty sure nothing bad will happen and nothing irreparable can happen but gotta say these things just to be sure anytime I'm messing with root permissions.
ANOTHER NOTE: I'll put this up in the market for $1. It'll remain free here but people can donate to me that way.
YET ANOTHER NOTE: I've managed to get a new method working that's a lot more stable and flexible. I will keep this thread here but won't be maintaining it.
EDIT: Moving data is too unstable, I've removed the option. It doesn't force close anymore when you don't have the setup right, it just gives an error and wont let you do anything, so that's better.
Tried it this morning and worked great. You might add a pop up at the end of moving apps to restart the device. When less experienced people use it, they won't know to do that I'm afraid.
the app sends me into abootloop at the htc screen

i tried from fresh wipe and sd

OH SHOOT!!! I fixed this problem on the market one but forgot to put it back up on here. Umm... for now no1 should use the one posted here, until I can get home and post the updated one. OR if you still want to fix this and don't much just a bit of fiddling in the recovery terminal, after moving apps to sd, restart in recovery mode and do this:
Code:
mount data
ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app
For anyone who cares about such things, the problem is that it deletes the /data/app folder and then makes a symlink, which sounds ok, except that every super user command has to be run through the whitelist app... which no longer exists. So it's not able to set up the link and all hell breaks loose.
i did use the 1 from here
it says ln: /data/app: file exists
if i already had apps2sd, tried to upgrade my phone from 5.0 to 5.01G, so I wiped...then data.img wouldn't flash over...if i do this, will my apps show up again?

ya it's the one from here that's broken, sorry. If you haven't already flashed back and everything(still have the boot loop) then you can use the code I posted and it should fix it. I'll post the updated version tonight when I get back home.

Yes, just uncheck the checkbox. But you might want to read the note that I just posted, there's a known problem with it that has a fix but requires going into the recovery terminal. I'll post the updated version of this app that doesn't have that bug tonight.

Not really,,
According to the like 6th post or something its states this app wont work if you download it from here, but if you were to get it through the market....
Bob should now be your uncle
if you give him some time as clearly posted again, he will fix the app from the first post and replace it later on

you had the "stale NFS handle" right? I'm not really sure what's going on but something in your phone's file system sounds like it went screwy. Maybe someone like JF or LucidREM could help? Your problem goes way over my head and I'm guessing the same is true of a lot of people on here unfortunately.
its cool imma jus stay with apps n caches to sd...n kep dalvik on the fone..i got passed the nfs error and get stuck at tmo g1 screen maybe ill try again l8ter
jf rom
Ok question I know it says apps to sd rom is needed does this mean only haykuro roms? I have a jfrc33 1.42 and I could do apps to sd using this rom (planning on doing it tonight my 8gig class 6 card arrived) so my question is can I just use this app or do I need to do all the steps manually

It should work on any apps to sd ROM. This includes LucidREM's modified JF ROMs. If you're gonna be manually changing it into an apps to sd, then I would think it would work but can't promise it. I wasn't able to figure that out when I tried so I'm not 100% sure that they work the same but I would imagine they would. Again, though, the one posted here has that known bug which will be fixed after I get home from work.
Short answer(s):
Haykuro's ROM: definitely works
LucidREM ROM: Don't have it to test it but almost assuredly works
Self-modified: probably works?
Sounds good I wasn't doing it till later tonight anyways (stuck at work also) also is it still a good idea to keep ext2 parititon less then 2gb like lucid reported on his tutorial

Now that i completed the Root and flash of custom ROM, questions...

OK i think i completed the ROOT process. my main quesiton is how do i know that my phone is actually rooted? is it one of those scenarios where if i was able ot flash Cyanogens 3.9.10 ROM and also FLash the normal Mytouch Splash screen to replace the red Vodafone splash screen that my phone i indeed rooted? is there any way to tell for sure that my Mytouch is indeed rooted i gues is the simple question.
my next question is how hard is it to now move forward on to one of the more indepth HERO type ROMS that require the 3 partition SD cards? i would like to try this soon bfore i get too attached with my current ROM and start loading the phone up.
and my last question if anyone can answer is how to i store apps on to the SD card and not the internal memory? i understand im not supposed to download any 3d party app2sd programs.
thank so much for the wonderful work from the members of this site! so much knowledge on here.

RA's recovery image has a SD format option for the 3 partitions... all you would have to do is boot to the recovery and hit that selection when your SD card is in and it will prepare it for you... i can confirm it works as qtek was skeptical in his post...
if you completed all the steps properly, your phone is rooted... if yuo wanted to you could try and adb shell to the phone when connected to usb and type in the superuser command, which i forget offthe top of my head...
if you plan on moving to any of the hero rom, they typically require the 3 partions for file swap and apps2sd storage, so if you do that, theres nothing else you'll have to do...

open a command prompt type adb root, if it says it's already running as root, you're golden.
Start asking your questions in the right sub-forum (Q&A) (Theme) or even in (General), or i will be forced to ban you for 3 days or till you learn.

How to replace one file when failing to boot

Hey guys
I screwed up my vold.fstab trying to get "_ExternalSD" back.
Unfortunately! I did not run a nandroid before I made the change.
Now, I can dirty flash my rom on top, or go back to a nandroid from a few days ago, but I'd really just like to recover and go on my merry way. And maybe learn something in the process.
Only thing is, I can't figure out how to access the phone other than the External SD card through CWM.
Can I mount the internal /system and access through USB? Is there some facility to copy a file from one point to another? Any other methods? I guess the phone has to be up to run ADB, right?
I don't know how to generate a flashable zip but I could extract the original version of the file from the original rom. I assume that its non trivial to create a flashable zip, but maybe someone can comment? It looks like there is signing and certificates involved..
thanks for any ideas

this is why i hate it when people make those guides.
messing with the vold.fstab is dangerous (even though its only a few lines) if your trying to recover your data, give up. its not going to happen. (sorry)
when you edit the vold.fstab it messed up the partitions on your internal SD card and most likely did the equivalent of wiped your /system partition. (or another important one.) your actually lucky it did not completely brick your phone.
your post was a little vague, but if you can, just restore an older nandroid, or wipe everything and install another ROM. (you can try dirty flashing but i dont think itll work)
if you cannot access CWM, then follow the steps in This guide. it should get you back up on your feet. after you follow that guide flash a gingerbread ROM (any gingerbread rom will do fine) then you can reboot and flash any ROM you want. (it needs this to fix a quirk in that script)
Hope you get it fixed
EDIT: re read your post, if your feeling adventurous and want to give it a shot, boot into CWM and connect it via usb. you can now get into an ADB shell on your phone by typing 'adb shell' if you have adb all setup and working. (im working from memory here so dont quote me on any of this)
now, you should be able to access your /system folder from that shell. be very careful though, i dont have much experience right here, and if i remember correctly you might not be in the full root directory yet)
if you can get into it try replacing your vold.fstab with a stock one,
if you dont have a stock one lying around, make a nandroid of the current state of the rom, then flash another rom, pull the vold.fstab, then re-restore back to the broken one and restore it (id upload mine but my phone is OOC right now )
after that just reboot and hope it resolves itself, if not then just follow my advice above
and keep that guide i linked to handy, messing around in CWM has the ability to brick your phone, if it does, then just follow that guide.

re read your post and updated my last post right after you posted
after dealing with noobies all day, i forget sometimes people want to try big things
Thanks guys. The info I was missing was there's no special trick to attaching adb while in CWM! Just plug in!
My phone is back up and running and partitions are fine as far as I can see after just booting up.
Hi there! I messed up with the vold.fstab filfe on my tablet – I replaced it with a downloaded file with the intention to transfer apps to my external SD card.
Now my tablet is only showing the startup logo and won’t continue loading. I can access recovery mode. Now I want to restore the original vold.fstab file.
My questions:
1. Using the Android SDK, the file explorer does not show any files, though my tablet is recognized.
2. Using adb push, it yields an error: permission denied, how to successfully push the original vold.fstab and replace the existing vold.fstab?
3. If I dump an image of my tablet and edit the dumped image, would this be easier compared to the steps above?
Thanks!

Mansa_noob, yes, my tablet is rooted. I followed some instructions about adb but had an error saying access denied, and also no files are displayed at file explorer. See my posts above. I also mounted it successfully. I will post some sreenshots later.
Please if you have some instructions, I am willing to try.

Hi twitchyEye, it did not work. It attemps to install (using the install update from ext sd card) but then says installation aborted.

What recovery are you using? I suck with adb so I got nothing on that front.
It was the stock recovery from my Tablet. I don't have it on hand right now, I will post later. The chipset is RK3066. My problem is my tablet has no official support on the internet (maybe becaue it's still new). Model is Skyworth S71(3G).
I see. Yeah this is over my head man. I thought for sure you were running a custom recovery and it was an easy answer. I'm actually struggling right now with adb myself with a similar issue something about permissions whenever I try to do anything to my phone. So I guess right now would be a perfect time for somebody to chime in with a smarter answer!

I want to try, but the stock recovery is my last hold as I have no stock ROM. If I overwrite the stock ROM, I cannot reinstall it as I don't have a copy of it.
So why not flash cwm with nvflash and then make a backup of your current stock rom? I did exactly that.

[Q] Moving apps to SD card

Hi I have A sony ericsson neo V phone and have been reading on moving apps to sd cards as I couldn't do it manually, I have read that I have to root the phone, would like some help on this please, I ve seen a thread but don't know whether it applied to my phone make and model. Please tell me how to carry it out.
I believe you need to root your phone to force apps to SD card unless they have that functionality as an in-app feature. You can search the forums for your specific phone's forum, and find a rooting thread there.

Now that you are rooted there are multiple methods to move an app to your SD card. Many are user friendly apps on the play store (I have used app2sd, seemed to work good). Or you can manually move the files using a file explorer now that you have root privileges.
Alternative method
After Rooting your device you can use foldermount to mount some apps on Sd card
I used link2sd..withit i can deinstall applications or freeze, bcz not used memory if is frozzed...

[Q] Need Help

Hi,
I found the guide here on how to root my Acer Iconia Tab 8. But since I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to computers compared to you guys, I got a bit confused on the instructions. When I launched the launcher.bat or whatever it was, I typed in what was necessary but then it said that the adb was killing. Is there a fix to that? Also, if someone could explain the instructions to me in a simpler and more detailed way, then that would be great.
Thanks

Connect ur device...
Then check it in device manager for your device... What it says...if it has a exclamation sign...then drivers are not properly installed or matched...
If not... Then enjoy...
