No Recovery, garbled screen, can I recover? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my TF101 model B80 using RazorClaw (nvflash is a no-go for this model). Installed CWM, all was well. I tried to install Prime ROM from CWM, and was unimpressed; tried to restore my Nandroid backup of original rooted OS. Now, Transformer will not boot into any recovery (neither CWM or original green android), and screen comes up garbled. Is there any way I can restore my original stock by merely putting a particular image on my external sd card?
Any other suggestions welcome, I just can't get to a screen (recovery or otherwise) where there is any readable text I can respond to. Nor can I turn the device off. It will continue to reboot in this fashion. When I get home today I'll be able to start from a dead battery.
Thanks

Yes, I did a full wipe including dalvik cache before all restores. At this point, though, my primary concern is just finding a path back to usability!

I had the same situation..I used the unbrick method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123429
then you could try restore a backup ..
To turn off the device press the power button for 10-15 seconds..

I can try this when I get home today.... I'm just concerned because the method involves nvflash .... which I thought didn't work from the newer TF models (I have a model B80). I needed to wait for the RazorClaw exploit because previous attempts at using nvflash failed....

Then NVFlash will fail still...

Sounds like this problem

Being you can't get back into CWM not sure how you'll flash the stock kernel.
HAve you tried Holding Vol Down button plus Power button till you get prompt to enter recovery at which time immediately push Vol up button withion 5 sec.

OK .... my bad.... I guess I wasn't pressing the buttons in the right sequence/duration. I CAN get to CWM!
So, once again, I try to restore the Nandroid backup and after rebooting, end up with the screen situation as in the reference you provided.
So, I am assuming my Nandroid backup is not restoring the kernel that it needs. I was running a recent OTA update; I believe the version was 8.6.5.19.
Where can I get the appropriate kernel to install from CWM? Does it matter in what order I install the kernel and the Nandroid backup?

Same issue, no recovery though
Hi,
I have the same issue as the original poster, B80 serial, RazorClaw root. However, when I boot to recovery I get the green android with yellow triangle and exclamation mark.
I need to restore a recovery on my device as I may need to unroot to send to Asus. I have an even deeper problem of having to have the device connected to power for it to turn on after shut down.
However my main question is for that serial number and root method, what is the best way to flash a recovery on my device (stock or CWM) if I can not get into recovery to begin with?
P.S. RecoveryInstaller will not work, after installing the apk, I click the flash recovery button, the system holds for a bit, then nothing happens.
I will continue to search the forms for some answers, any insights or direction will be appreciated.
I can get into apx mode.
Thank you community!

I think you can flash the recovery via the staging partition. Search around the TF section, it's in here somewhere. Although, I wonder why the 1 click recovery didn't work?

Everything I see in the forms requires one of several conditions which my TF doesn't currently meet.
1. Recovery. I can not go into any recovery, thus I can not perform any flashing of any other rom or recovery.
2. B70 or later. Because of the security in the boot for these new serials, I can not use the NVFlash tools to un-brick / flash.
I am already rooted, however I do not know the reason for lack of recovery on this device. I unfortunately bought it yesterday from Craigslist, so not sure what this guy did before I got it.
I searched for flashing recovery staging partition and did not find anything immediately relevant. Please advice is there is a different wording I should use in my search as I am now getting an immense download on all of this trying to figure out what to do. I am also fairly new to Android devices having 1 other phone that is rooted.
Thank you for all the support and quick response! wonderful community here.

Try searching for posts with /dev/block/mmcblk0p4
This is particularly dangerous because you don't have access to nvflash. If you get bootloops, it is bricked. You have to be sure that whatever you flash will be 100% compatible with what you have now.
Also, when you try to boot into recovery, what does the text at the top say? There should be a version number in there somewhere.

Thank you gee one. I have since been able to install clockworkmod. My issue with the power not turning on if not plugged in still persists, I have started a separate thread.
I found your post on the staging partition here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309949&highlight=power
Do you recommend this for the issue still persisting?
If so, considering I am on 8.6.5.19 will I have to use the blob from that? It is not on Asus website as I got it from the firmware update option in the settings before loading up my new ROM.
Do you recommend this step as the only resolution or is there another way?

Ok let me get this straight:
You have clockworkmod installed. Can you boot into it and do the buttons work?
Are you getting a garbled screen when you boot into the rom? Or are you just trying to unroot?
The tricky part is to avoid the bootloops of death.
sent from my cyanogen(mod) vision

Honestly what i would do if i were you, assuming i understood correctly that you can get into clockworkmod, just reflash the prime rom you didnt like(after wiping everything, including cache and dalvik), and if it boots and everythings okay, at least you know nothings really wrong with ur tablet. As for the plug in situation, make sure your battery isnt simply dead. As far as i know, it wont charge from recovery, so if uve been stuck without a booting rom for a while, it being dead could definitely be possible. Once you are in a working rom and you sorted out the charging issue, then you should worry about getting back to stock.

Thank you camaros,
I am able to load stock ROM successfully.
Battery is not dead as it is fully charged, and will run un tethered after powerup. I will test resetting it although I doubt that is causing it.
What i would like to determine is, is this related to a hardware or software issue?
Also, is there a way to restore stock recovery from CWM?

I ran nvflash to restore the gtablet to stock.
The flash completed successfully and Tapntap booted, however all my luanchers and old apps were still there. When I reboot the device goes directly into Apx. Powering with power button no volume, vol- or vol+ gives same result. If I repeat the flash It boots into tapntap bet debits into apx. Do I need to do a factory reset here or somthing else. I am going to try a data wipe and factory reset tonight at the first boot. I want to install TNTllite 5.00 a cordinto.the install post can't install clockworkmod but some post seem to indi ate install with clo kwor works Any Help appreciated.
Im having the exact issue any help would be greatly apreciated. I flashed to stock and all went well but when i power off it gets stuck in apx mode.. The only way I even know it's on is because when I plug the usb into the comp I get the connected notification. PLEASE HELP
Just a complete guess but did you check to see if the vol - was stuck?
Gentlemen:
When I nvflashed both of my tablets, it went through the process -- then it rebooted and started up the version being loaded right up to the main screen all by itself.
I never had to do a thing after starting the .bat file to flash except watch.
I don't know how this will help, but maybe it will stimulated and idea!!

Thanks to Roebeet I have a working gtablet again! The newer belkit img in his dropbox caused the APX bootloop, I dont know why. As instructed I used the older img and that worked. Did a factory reset and now have a clean install, ready for TNTlite 5.01!
got mine working last night had to use nvflash_gtablet_46 and nvflash_windows_20100500.zip instead of the nvflash_gtablet_2010110500.zip and it worked great for some reason that nvflash_gtablet_2010110500.zip would make my tab get stuck in a bootloop stuck in apx mode!!! Hope this helps it worked for me!
Can you guys please help me? i am in a similar issue. I tried using the 3588 stock .zip to get ready to install tnt 5/ ttx.9 and well it started to boot loop so to NVflash i went. I have tried
nvflash_gtablet_46 and nvflash_windows_20100500.zip and nvflash_gtablet_2010110500.zip and gtab.spx.stock.3588.zip and NONE of them work for me. I am able to sucessfully NVflash them but when the tablet restarts it goes to the tapntap screen the flashes back and forth between that screen and a black blank screen before it goes completely black... The tablet remains on though just with a blank screen and i must hold the power button for 10 seconds to power it off. i have tried every combination of flashing i can think of but no dice.. please help?

You might need a data wipe - if you can get past the birds but get stuck at some point after the "GTablet" screen, a data wipe would be my first suggestion.
The problem is that 1105 bekit nvflash (and mine) doesn't have clockworkmod embedded in it to fix that. But, as a workaround, you can replace "part9.img" in the bekit 1105 with clockworkmod's "recovery.img" (just rename part9.img to part9.img.org and then rename recovery.img to part9.img). Redo the nvflash, the reboot into recovery when you are stuck again and wipe data. Once "fixed", then you can undo the change and reflash one more time to get back to full stock, or OTA update to 3588 to get 3588 stock.
I know this is a bit of a PITN due to all the steps, but it does work.
robeet u are absolutely correct and i posted that as my solution in the other thread i started. It finally occured to me when i was reading and there was a line that said NVflash will keep ur /data untouched. I was like OH ****.. hah. I though NVFlash wiped EVERYTHING!!!. Anyway replacing the .img with CWM.img and then wiping and then redoing the 3588 apx update worked.
Please help, can't get win7 to detect the device. When u say usb, is it mini usb on your device or is it full size usb? I was be able to run TNTL 5.0, due to afew crashes, i decide to revert back to 4.2. Since then, my viewsonic g tablet never boot again.
Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your response,
Got mine to work, just want to clarify for those who use win7x64. download three files from thread... nvflash_win, nvflash_gtablet, and usb driver. Turn on device in APX mod, plug in ur tablet via mini usb. Go to windows device manager, making sure it sees APX has proper driver. Go back to nvflash folder and double click on nvflash_gtablet.bat, and relax. Once it's done flash, reboot and enjoy.
thank you all for your hard work.

Thanks a lot Roebeet. Saved my life too! I formatted the tablet with the format tool that is supposed to erase the BCT and then did an NVflash for the rest and was stuck in a bootloop. Tried both the 1105 and the other bekit, and ended up renaming part9.img, getting CWM to wipe data and working from there. It's TnTlite 4.4 from here on out. Thanks again.

You restart while holding down the Volume Up key. If it doesn't appear to be shutting down properly then hold down the power key for 30 - 45 seconds and try it again.

it's doesn't do anything but boot into APX mode... holding power and volume up doesn't do anything other than enter / exit that mode. that is, unless i'm missing something else...

the first post doesn't talk about *how* to execute the CWM install, only the nvflash. other posts in the thread talk about the CWM piece, but there is no step by step to get out of APX and into clockwork... that's what i need because something in my config is definitely out of whack.
If your nvflash worked then there is no need for a step by step other than what has been said.
1) Make sure you are using befit's 1105 image
2) Make sure you are using ClockworkMod .8
3) Make sure you've modified the gtablet.cfg file properly.
4) Make sure you didn't get any errors reported from your nvflash.
5) When it is done it should reboot.
If it boots normally, then do a factory reset from within the system settings. Then reboot while holding the volume up key and you should get CWM.
If it doesn't then try to shut it down and restart while holding the volume up key and you should get CWM.
If you're still stuck in an APX loop then I would try nvflashing just the bekit 1105. If that will boot at all you can try to load CWM from an SD card.
If you'd like to post or PM your config file, the result from your nvflash and any other files you've changed I'll be happy to look at them.
Same situation here.... tried everything that was mention but still not working.
As soon I turned on, goes a black screen (apx mode) that's it!!! Power and vol + don't do anything. the only way to boot completely is nvflashing again.... tried to reset data factory but as soon the tablet turn off (restart turn on) black screen.
Can anybody help me.... it has been 12 days already.... I had posted for help before and I already did everything that was suggested..... I don't know what to do anymore.
PLEASE HELP!!!!

It would probably be a little helpful (if you want help) if you let everyone know what you were doing when you "bricked" your phone. That way people know where to start in assisting you.

What happens when you try to boot into recovery mode?
OK here is what I did to brick my device.
I wanted to do a factory reset and I used clockwork recovery to do so.
Wat I didn't know what that Clockwork recovery was going to format my system.
I can only get into fast boot via vol up+vol+down+power
Cannot get back to stock recovery or CWM. Tried flashing via fastboot method
My phone just goes to LG screen no loading bar
Currently the only function is fastboot

The best thing with Nvidia phones and tablets is that its barely impossible to brick your phone. If you think you bricked it - you just need NV flash and either the stock rom or stock recovery and you are back to normal
I have done that with my old G-tablet - it was a piece of cake to fix it.
is there an nv flash for mac?
thought i did the same thing!
if you can get it into format hit the home button. hopefully vol+down+power will get you there. pull your battery and you may just get lucky if done enough times? i would keep trying. good luck

[Q] No longer able to boot into ClockworkMod Recovery after latest ROM flash.

After flashing the latest ROM I was messing around with (WajkIUI 2.1.6) the phone would crash and reboot within 30 seconds of booting up. The previous ROM that was running was FAUXMIUI_RG2xV2.0.0 (01/08/2011 [v2.0.0]OVERCLOCK) that was stable except for when I’d turn wi-fi on after being off for 8 hours or so phone would reboot.
I figured I would boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and restore one of the nandroid backups, I tried booting into recovery I found out that I could not. When I hold the volume down and press the power button I see the screen that says software update (like when flashing with OneClickRecoveryFlasher).
Whenever I flash a new ROM I will Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, and then wipe dalvik before installing zip. I’ve always run cyanogenmod nighties; FAUXMIUI_RG2xV2.0.0 was the first MIUI ROM I’ve used.
When I run OneClickRecoveryFlasher, I do not see any errors on the command prompt so I am assuming it was successful, or at least thinks it was.
I tried to Restore LG G2x Stock Recovery using OneClickRecoveryFlasher and then flashing v5.0.2.0 and still no ClockworkMod Recovery, also tried v4.0.1.5 and still no ClockworkMod Recover.
I then tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644 and with that I was able to get back to stock 2.3.3, tried to use OneClickRecoveryFlasher to flash ClockworkMod, still no go.
I tried LG Mobile Update and that proceeded to install something, not really sure what the update was, after the update finished, phone rebooted into stock 2.3.3. Shut the phone down and tried to flash ClockworkMod and still nothing.
I did a hard reset following http://mobilephonerepairguides.blogspot.com/2011/04/lg-g2x-hard-reset.html
I also tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183168, that got me to stock 2.3.3 but I still could not boot in to ClockwordMod Recovery.
I’m having a hell of a time wrapping my head around what I screwed up. Did I somehow destroy the recovery partition, is that possible? Any ideas what I broke and how to fix it? Can I used adb to view the partition table, would that tell me if something was corrupt?
Any help and ideas would be appreciated, I have tried doing my due diligence and I apologize if I missed something obvious.
Thanks,
-Matt
Faux never made a miui
Did you nvflashed recovery? If no then do that first.
NVIDIA NEVER AGAIN!
If you did the LG Updater it returned your phone to stock everything, including recovery. You need to use NVFlash (One Click method okay) to reflash CWM and then you should be good to go.
When the phone is completely off, hold volume down, then hold the power button and don't let go of both until the second lg logo.
If you hold volume down too early it'll give you the software update screen.
Well that's embarrassing, thanks buru898 that did the trick and got me into CWM Recovery. I never remember holding the power button for that long but it worked and I'll remember that for next time.
Thanks

Semi-Bricked my TF101

Just picked up a TF101 and it had the Cryo (whatever it is called) OS with ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.3.4. The OS didn't pick up wifi on the apps but it is on and logged into the router so I did a reset. Once I reset the TF101, i am stuck at CWM. It won't boot into any OS or anything else. I tried almost everything I found googling (this site and others) but nothing works. I did, however, got the TF drivers for my laptop so I can connect to it but I can't get the USB debug option on (of course).
So what are my options? how do I "unbrick" this thing? is this what some people call it soft-brick as it does boot but there just isn't any OS in there? I tried to put the OS zip file from Asus on a MicroSD but when I went to install zip from sdcard, it i can't get to the microSD to install it. it doesn't find it at all.
what can I do? what are the steps in unbricking this thing? I got this for my dad for father's day (chinese father's day which is TODAY...) and would like to get it to him.
Thanks in advance!
Is it in a CWM boot loop? Meaning when you reboot the tablet it keep going back to CWM?
Try this to see if you can boot OS.
Turn off tablet
Push and hold Vol down plus Power button
Wait till you see a screen that give you two options
Wipe data or Cold boot Linux
Choose Cold boot to boot into OS.

If you have ADB working, you can push a ROM file to internal memory and flash it.
Alternatively you can NVFlash a compatible ROM.

Sorry to sound ignorant but what's ad and what command (extra code after the .exe) do I add afterwards?
I'd try to flash a ROM via NVFLASH.
You may download it from here, but you must know if your TF101 is WW version, US version or any other. You must also know if your device is SBK1 or SBK2. That depends on the serial number. For example, mine starts by B50 and it's SBK1. If yours is SBK2 then you'll have to take a look at wheelie. If not, take a look here.

However, I'm not responsible for any damage your device might suffer.
Take a look at that and tell me
here's the endall- easyflash version 0.8.3b whitekidneys just updated it and saved my brick. it'll save yours too. just install it on your computer, along with naked drivers 0.7, put the tf in apx, and flash. literally that easy.
Follow the link to easy flash / nvflash and follow the steps...

Stuck in startup animation loop

I unlocked and rooted my tablet yesterday and everything appeared to be working fine. After using it for a couple hours and restarting it a few times it stopped working and is now locked in a boot loop. When I try boot the tablet it comes on and gets to the animation where the glint of light goes across the Asus logo but it does not finish and instead it stops there and I get the moving circles at the bottom. I've left it running there for several hours and it just hangs.
I've tried erasing the data and booting to linux but the same thing happens when I try either of those.
I've also tried flashing a number of different ROMs, but all that happens is it starts installing and then I get the Android guy on his side error screen.
I hadn't done anything to the ROM and was still running 10.6.1.14.4. I even downloaded that same ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266519 but I get the same error message when I try flash that ROM.
I would really, REALLY appreciate any ideas at all - and thanks in advance for any suggestions.

this gonna sound odd but i had exact same prob when i rooted and flashed chromix rom. it went. what i did was flash it once with the rom with secure wipe, then i flashed again. and it got stuck at optimizing apps, then i tried reflashing couldnt get it to boot, what i ended up doing was using clockwork mod to factory reset my tablet, then had to restart, and reflash, this time it actually got to main screen. dont let it discharge/reboot for awhile as im bout to post a issue im having with it. but thats what i did to make it work for me.

I'm not sure I understand --- how do I get to the clockwork mod if i can't get past the startup animation? And I've tried a bunch of roms with secure wipe and i get an error from every one of them.
didnt you install clockwork mod first?

the thing i found showed me to installed the clockwork mod first before i did any flashing, i rooted device then i flashed once clockwork mod was installed, i had to root, then install rom manager and goo manager, from within there i installed the clockwork recovery script/mod then i proceeded to flash chromi-X DEODEX.
Did you flash the correct bootloader? I had the same problem, look for my posts in the last few pages of ChromiX.

Seems to me you installed Asus factory stock rom JB 4.2.1 (10.6.1.14.4), which means you have the latest bootloader, then you unlocked and rooted your device, however, you never installed any custom recovery like TWRP or CWM (clockmod). Now your device is boot looping. You need to boot into stock recovery by turn off your device, hold volume down and power button until you see white text on the screen, now release both buttons, you should see 3 icons (RCK, Android and wipe data). NOW you are in fastboot mode. Let me know at least you can get that far, before we continue....

buhohitr -- You're exactly right. I can boot into stock recovery. When I select Android or wipe data it goes back to the animation screen and hangs up. When I select RCK it goes to the Android guy and says installing update but then it show him fallen over and the word Error. I've tried RCK with a memory card that has a number of different ROMs on it but the same thing keeps happening.

Give this a try, the factory Asus firmware zip file that you downloaded, unzip the file, you should see another zip file, rename this new zip file to "EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip" (without quotation), then copy it to the root of your sdcard then boot into stock recovery and execute the RCK again. Make sure you don't have any other zips laying around in the root of your sdcard.
You are truly a god among men.

THIS WORKED!!! Thanks so much. I was really worried I had bricked it.
So now one last question --- WHY did that work? Is there somewhere I could go to read up on this kind of stuff? I've tried surfing the XDA forum but there's a lot of stuff like this where someone gets there problem solved, but not much explaining why something worked so I can learn more about it.

Somehow the stock recovery was reinstalled on your tablet, thus letting this method work. It however does not on CWM or TWRP. All you did was manually reinstall a stock rom back onto your tablet. How it got the stock recovery is beyond me unless you flashed a stock ROM from CWM and didnt realize what you were installing.

Since the JB 4.2.1 upgrade, this is the most reliable method to install Asus full stock firmware. Also, since you're unlocked, let root the device by go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230763 download the tool and root it. Once rooted, I suggest that you should install TWRP custom recovery, by download Goomanager from the market, open the app and tab on the 3 little boxes on the top right hand corner, select "install recovery scripts" , this will shutdown your device and install custom TWRP recovery script, once this installed, you can download "rebooter" from the market and this app has many options, one of them is allowed you easily boot into custom recovery.
