Hello. I won an LG Optimus 7 in a contest. It has mango preinstalled. I was wondering if it is worth upgrading from optimus 7 to Lumia 800? I know this question has been asked before, but most have compared the Lumia to Focus, and not Optimus 7.
From what I saw, the display(blacks) of Optimus 7 is very disappointing, as is the camera(low light). I havent installed any apps, as I wanted the device to be fresh, in case I am selling it.
The price of Lumia 800 is almost the double of what Optimus 7 costs. Is it a worthy replacement? Please help.

Are you joking?!?! I got the LG Optimus 7 and love it, and the light at the back is too bright, absolutely not low...
I'm also think of buying that one maybe later because it's nokia, and has great built in apps, but still theres nothing wrong with the Optimus 7 with even an app for jailbreaking within 5 mins.
You maybe should sell this one, use your old phone and wait a while til the price gets lower on the Lumia.
I would wait till next year to see what Nokia WP7 phone will be announced at MWC. Should be something much better. Than sell LG O7 and buy new Nokia if it is worth it... Thats what I'm planning to do with my LG.

Oh, I think you misunderstood me. I meant that the blacks in the display glow a lot. And the camera has poor performance under low light. But I must admit, the build quality is excellent.

True, but the wait would be too long. Phones will be announced in Feb, and might be available in May-June? However, there's no doubt that they would be better(Nokia 900?) The other problem is that the sale value of O7 will fall down drastically, even though I might have used it just for a couple of months.
Note: Another thing about Lumia that attracts me is that they say they will release 750 apps specific to the Indian market and exclusive to Nokia. They have employed 1000 developers to do it!!
is your Optimus 7 ringtone volume loud enough?
I found Lumia 800 is a bit soft in ringtone volume

The speaker volume of Optimus 7 is a bit low. However, it is not an issue for me as the phone is in vibrate mode most of the times.
I have decided to keep my Optimus 7 and not sell it. Maybe it just needs a bit of love . I can do with an LCD screen. I will upgrade when they will release devices with Apollo.
Have fun with it!
And if you want to jailbreak it, then it will like take 1-5 mins with some simple steps , and then if you reset the phone it will be re-unjailbreaken.
HTC hub xap is a recommendation after jailbreak, with cool weather displaying and animations

Is there any danger of bricking the phone? You mean i will have to repeat the procedure each time I reset the phone if I have to install more xaps?
HTC hub would be superb. by jailbreak, do you mean the recent ChevronWP unlock? Sorry, I am being such a noob.
Edit: Could you please send me the link containing unlock instructions? Thanks.
Edit2: Successfully unlocked the device. It is so easy on Optimus 7. And hey, HTC Hub looks awesome. Thanks. Time for some homebrew apps now

Lumia forums here are very quiet but anyone who owns a Lumia 800, considering we might see WP8 announcements/launches in next 2-3 months - do you think it is worth getting a Lumia 800? I don't generally use 'used' phones as I've had bad experiences in past. So might go for a new one. I have HTC Titan currently which I'll sell off along with HTC Sensation XL - HTC is not impressing me on either of these handsets (long story).
Or will the general suggestion be of getting a cheap droid?
One of the plus points I've thought of so far is - Nokia will try and keep these Lumias alive by few more apps every now and then (exclusives) for next 12 months. I am hoping WP8 would have matured enough and I can then get second wave of WP8 devices or a cheaper pureview.
Must admit it is seriously quiet on here, I am going to wait for all the bugs to be ironed out before I go with a wp8 handset and until then will keep my 900 lumias as they do the job nicely, On the plus side there is wp7.8 to look out for in future, I personally would get a near new 800 or 900 to see you through til next year, I picked up a white 900 last month for £285 in near mint condition off ebay and it runs lovely, The 800s are abit cheaper and you could pick up a decent one for just under £200, Failing that I advise you try an N9 as I was really impressed with it, They go New from around £276 and will give you something different to tinker with, The only thing I didn't like about it was I could not sync it with Live calendar and I need that for all my work appointments etc, Great fun though and screen slightly bigger than Lumia 800s

It isn't even just Lumia forums overall WP sections are as good as legacy device sections. But probably quiet before the storm?
I can't find any Lumia 900s for that cheap and 800s are nearly £50 cheaper. I guess I might play a waiting game for a week or so but you are right! Will go for one of the Lumia to take me on to 2013!

I managed to win at auction so was lucky to some degree, Sold my Black 900 as it was abit bland looking and then had enough to get the white one, I did same as you and ditched the Titans lol, Don't think I will be going back to HTC unless they bring out some wp8 phones which would need to be outstanding to tempt me away from Nokia now.

Nah, if you are going to stay with WP when WP8 are launched and you don't mind a bit of bulk, I think it will be worth waiting for Nokia with pure view! Will hands down beat both HTCs hardware and efforts behind WP! I am never lucky with bids (shakes his head!), never! I might have to give it another go and see if I am lucky with any bids at all this time
You are right, for me it has to be cyan or white!

Wait for WP8 to launch and then buy a Nokia WP8 device. Nokia is very good at providing updates for Lumia series. I have Lumia 710 and I am very happy with the device. Very smooth GUI. There are some limitations but yes, they will be shortened in WP8.
I have a different question here, why would you sell your Titan for a Lumia 800? I mean, I'm honestly not seeing what you gain by this, and it would likely cost money. Sure, they'll keep the Lumias alive with special features, but then again - if you want to purchase a new phone anyways, the only logical thing to do would be imho keeping the Titan and going for a WP8 Lumia upon release.
I wouldnt get a lumia right now, with wp8 coming out so soon.

Switching to a phone from the same generation isnt wise. Its not worth spending money on a Lumia if you already have a WP7.5 device. Lumia are awesome phone undoubtedly though. Buy a WP8 made by Nokia. Perfect !!

i'm betting on the storm for wp8 being loud and short. then a little trickle of a stream like wp7 did. there doesn't seem to be much going on in the wp8 section, either.
maybe the devs are waiting and watching to see if it's viable to spend any resources on it ?
The reason I want to sell HTC Titan is primarily because of call quality and secondly because from 7.8 onwards, Nokia looks like the only one who will be supporting its handset, even if it is by releasing exclusive apps. All other OEMs want you to buy WP8, where as Nokia will do what it did with Symbian, support the lower and the higher end markets equally for long time.
As I said, calm before the storm. No one is active here or anywhere else. WP blogs have dried out. But then WP8 doesn't look like a super hit yet based on leaks. It might be an excellent launch as all loyal Gen1 buyers want an upgrade. But I don't think I want a WP8 from first batch of launch. I am planning on Lumia 800/900 so that I have a WP7.8 handset that will be supported till 2013 summer by when second gen WP8 might be launched and will hope WP9 doesn't kill WP8 by no update path again. Can't see how I will react if WP8.8 scenario comes in 2013!
I gots my Lumia 800 a few weeks ago, free, with a 1 year plan. In those situations it's Definately worth getting it. Most Android or iOS offerings are at least twice as expensive and often offer a lesser user experience than my Lumia does, and this is in comparison with a Galaxy S3. Of course WP7.5 has it's flaws, but after 1 year i'm free to pick up a new device with my contract and I'm up for picking up an ironed out WP8 device then.
WP7.8 might lack a few features that WP8 will get, but 99.99% of those Nokia will fill in with their own apps. Like the datacounter application and so on. Even today the Lumia 800 is a seriously good device and once you learn how to handle the battery, it's still one of the best phones out there.
Don't get me wrong, if you would be stuck with it for a longer time after WP8 is available, you will feel like you miss out on stuff after a few months. But for year or even 1.5 years it's definately a good buy.
You getting a Lumia , i am going to have Titan 2... and we are both buying WP8... what a coincidence .

I'm in a similar situation found a deal on another hd7 for $50, and a woman wants to rid herself of a lumia 900, she says offer her anything, she's moved on to a iPhone.
I want to try 7.8 for a while, but the damn app issue is killing me. There are no substitutes for my daily apps. I'm even willing to give up Google Now for a while, and I use it constantly.
My daily must have apps;
Tapatalk - board express is one hell of a joke
mSecure- absolutely no alternative
G+
Gtalk- I can use the alternative
YouTube- need I explain the preloading features?
Currents- alternatives?
That's just the top 5, please help me.

Certainly true, but I'd expect most if not all of them to be ported to other phones and I'm not sure the costs of this same-gen change would make this switch reasonable.

I had metrotube last year on my old HD7, might have to settle for that. Preloading has me spoiled.
I can go back to using Pulse to replace Currents. Everything else is a huge downgrade. Like no TV apps(Google TV), none of my games, etc.
Its a ton of trade offs, but I just want to try 7.8.
Damn I hope developers take advantage of native coding in WP8.

Idk. Now that I have my TF300 I've been using google stuff extensively again, but honestly there's such a huge family feeling with WP right now, after using it for 8 months. I get more functionalities and all the fancy stuff with Android, but my PHONE is too personal for me, and now I can't live without the feel of warmth that WP offers me throughout the UI. Everything became like a part of me, and even if WP8 won't be able to face the competition I'll still be hooked anyway. No matter what, even JB feels COLD to me. IDK if it's the design, the functionality of the few basic things we have or what. I just can't think about myself using something else daily at this point. Am I nuts? Maybe it's just the bit of vodka I had tonite, but still...

i'm just so disappointed with the lack of development for the 8x. It has already reached EOL and we have nothing for it.

Is it something that developers and community will stay with or probably jump ship to the next big thing? Thanks for your input.

I have a G2 now, and am using a Oppo Find 7a for testing. And i'll tell you this, in about 4 days i'll be going BACK to the G2; its an amazing phone. The size to screen ratio is untouched. The camera is by far the best in a smartphone. Built in OIS (and not just software OIS) is something that once you see how it works, you'll wonder why more OEM's dont put this in their cameras. LG's version of Android is also very good, however i'll be rooting and flashing a custom ROM once i go back to it. Its honestly still the phone i most recommend to friends and family, you wont be dissapointed at all.
Plus! since its only $300, you know it wont go down too much more in price so you will probably get close to your money back if you decide you want the nexus 6 down the line anyway .

i wouldn't say the camera is 'inferior', its still a very good camera on the 7a; but the G2 is just a little better. And having OIS is awesome. i'm looking at the Sonic Open kang project ROM. from the thread it seems very stable.

Yes, really strange to hear the s5 was lagging for you enough to get rid of it. As for the iphone 5s, what price are you referring to? The 6's are coming out in two days so the price is very fluid right now. Are we talking $200, $400? Since Samsung and LG are out for you, how do you feel about Google, HTC?
Always attempt to avoid Apple, their products are expensive and overrated for their performance and their iOS system is so extremely closed-source that you can't really do much effective tweaking at all.
Just my 2¢.

the s5 you speaking, is snapdragon version, and its even available in india, snapdragon s5 doesnt lag, i used it.. actually exynos version is fully crap, 90% apps are not optimized for crap exynos, those are using exynos(if they are not able to upgrade smartphone)then probably they will always say exynos better, but i bet you, if marquies brownlee do review on s5 exynos variant, he will say 1 good point and 90% bad points...
+ still not 4.4 and no performance improvment update,
i am not saying samsung is crap, but tradition to india is so bad,
who cars about exynos, today world of snapdragon.. even developers phone are snapdragon may be nexus 5..

Always attempt to avoid Apple, their products are expensive and overrated for their performance and their iOS system is so extremely closed-source that you can't really do much effective tweaking at all.
Just my 2¢.

That's somewhat true, but not entirely. The worst thing about Apple devices for me is that they don't have problems too often, but when they do, they have no recovery mode or anything to fix the problem yourself. You absolutely always have to go to an Apple store to get a so-called "tech wizard" to help you out or to give you a new device.
Not so good.

Honestly Good phone but bad service,
I mean suppose today I buy z3 after 4 months they make new smart phone, they forget previous smartphone like they never made, just look at their Advt and social media, when they launch new then forget previous model like that is manufactured by other company,
And if we buy z3 their price in our country fall quickly and resale value is like no value.. It's good phone but there are many things company needs to do than manufacturing

Hello guys, I'm really low on money and need a new smartphone. I was thinking the 8X by HTC but as far as I read it won't even get the Update 1 from the Windows Phone 8.1.
So I'm better looking something else to buy?
HTC tweeted about 3 weeks ago that they are working through some issues with the 8.1 release, and have no dates to share just yet, but says "Stay tuned for more news."

My 8X has 8.1 Update 1 installed on it via Preview for Developers. They fixed the issue a while ago.
Thanks for the replies, it really helped.

Hey, man, could you give me some details regarding the 8X? I can't find anywhere about HTC's exclusive apps, updates, performance, etc. Did the camera get any better after all theses updates from WP8? I know it's a pretty good camera and I will use it a lot so if it got better I would be really happy. How are the nights shots?
It's similar to the Lumia 925 as far as performance goes. Depending on the model you get, it will use either an LTE or non-LTE chipset. In the US, the Verizon and AT&T variants are the LTE versions. I like the camera. Haven't had any issues with it. Just change if from the default 6MP to 8 MP.
IF you care about exclusive apps, get a Lumia HTC doesn't have any to write home about.
Here is a review of the AT&T model http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/htc-8x-review-windows-phone-8s-compact-flagship/

Thanks, apreciate your analysis. Lumia 925 has good performance so I'll be satisfied, as far as I know the version on Asia doesn't have LTE and it's not a problem to me.
Actually I care about the HTC exclusive apps, I think HTC has great customizations so I'd like to try them. The camera app always got my attention, the blinkfeed is pretty cool, etc. I know Nokia has much more apps but none of them gets me right, my mother-in-law has a Lumia 520 that I recomended so I'm familiar with Nokia apps. Besides, HTC 8X is much more well designed than any windows phone, only Lumias 925 and 930 can be considered beautifully designed as well.
I read the review, its a pretty good phone, comfortable to hold and not too big, though the screen could be bigger for the phone size. I also read this review(HTC 8X camera review) with emphasis on the camera and I was happy to know that the software can automatcally slow down the sutter speed to get better images.
those apps you are referring to are exclusive to the HTC One M8 for Windows. They don't even show up in the store when I search for them on my 8X!

This can't be right, I've seen in some videos on YouTube that the 8X has HTC apps on Windows Phone. Maybe cause you're using a preview version for developers this support is not added yet, this happens in other plataforms as well.

It has some OEM apps, but not BlinkFeed. Love this phone, just ordered my third one.
Go for it, its worth the Money. In my country it is under $150, lower than any matching Lumia.
But if you see both phones side by side, Lumia is crap. I m using it for last one year, (switched from iPhone 5) and still comfortable with it.
As already told, it can have 8.1 under developer preview option.

Yeah, but blink feed isn't essential. Would be good if HTC release it's apps for download, it will release the HTC Camera on Play Store.
What do you mean third one? Don't you even try newer phones? Good to know, I'll keep your passion in mind.
Just ordererd a second-handed 8X from ebay and is now waiting for it ($80 free shipping)
Having used the WP7-era HTC surround, I think HTC's OEM specific apps isn't something that'll hold you from getting the DP updates.... They just don't feel as natural as they are on Android (if you can make Blinkfeed as the default page then that's another history...)
Anyway, for the price those 8X are hanging around on eBay, they're pretty good deals if you need a new (old) phone

Sure, after I broke my second 8X I switched to an M7. It works okay, but bit rot is setting in and I'm starting to wish I was back on Windows. Looking forward to receiving my new , blue Verizon 8X.

Rot? That's strange, what kind? I really like HTC phones and the M8 for Windows is my current passion, too bad the price doesn't allow me to buy one.
Even if you like the 8X this much the only way I have to buy one is importing a refurbshed from China, so I rather buy some chinese smartphone. I'm still avaluating the situation.

Bit rot is just a name for the slowness and buggyness that comes to Android after a while of using it. Resetting the phone solves it, but it comes back again. Windows Phone and Ios avoids the problem by sandboxing apps etc. My first 8X i bought in store, a regular euro version. My second and third, both Verizon edition, i bought on eBay.

Got it, Android does have this problem with long lasting stability and solidness. It's, however, getting much better and providing improved user experienced that was missing when compared with Windows Phone.
How are the camera of the 8X for macro shots? I will use a lot of the camera. 16GB of memory is ok for Windows Phone? I didn't have any trouble with space on Android.

I couldn't say about macro shots, since I've naver taken any myself. Generally I'd say the 8X has a great camera for its current price class, but obviously it can't compete with a 930 or something like that. WP takes up less space than Android, so you should be fine with 16 GB.
If you do get an 8X then make sure you get the Verizon edition for the wireless charging

The Nokias are in a different level when it comes to camera, mainly the PureView series. But the fotographer counts a lot, I've seen some crazy photos with this Lumias and with the HTC 8X I'd get great results.
Great news, then. Space is something that will always worry me once it don't get an expansion slot.
Unfurtnatly the Verizon model don't work in my country, has to be the unlocked or AT&T models because of the net. Besides, the wireless charging isn't a big deal for me.
For the price I'm trying to decide between the Sony Xperia T and the HTC 8X. Thinking in system and overall hardware the 8X takes the leadership, but when it comes to back camera and flexibility the Xperia T appears on top.

Are you quite sure about the Verizon edition not working in your country? Strange, as it's supposed to be a worldphone. It works great here in Norway, except for the 4G which is the wrong band. Wireless charging isn't really something you think about, but it's a massive convenience if you do have it, so I'd reccommend checking that out if you're not 100 % sure.
Anyways, If I were you then I'd choose the OS first, then the phone. If you're looking for the most features for your money then Android is probably the way to go.
