J/w how the rest of you guys flash new roms. Anything else I should be doing when flashing a new rom?
Only think I would add is to wipe /system while in recovery. You can do that by accessing the "format /system" option in CWM Recovery under "Mounts and Storage"
Also, maybe make a Nandroid Backup before wiping /data incase something goes wrong

I'll be honest I could care less about anything on the ROM itself. Apps I just reinstall, contacts/email/calendar resync. All my music/pix are saved to the internal memory.
1. Reboot to recovery
2. Wipe boot/system/data/cache/dalvik
3. Reboot ROM and reinstall all apps and accounts
I don't like backing up the apps because I like the "starting fresh" feeling by putting back in the apps I actually want.
What i do
boot into recovery
wipe boot/system/data/cache/dalvik
install the rom/kernel
boot and leave the phone for 5 mins then reboot again =D
I know a lot of users will disagree but I simply nandroid, factory wipe and then flash the new rom. A factory wipe clears data and cache and flashing the rom will wipe system and boot. I've yet to have an issue with this method. I also know how to recover from most problems I could encounter on my own. Additionally, i'm a member of the do as i say, not as i do club. Always nandroid and follow dev instructions is what most people really need to do.

Hi, i were considering installing the nFinity 1.06 Gingerbread, when i see he recommends during a full wipe before installing.
Should i just do a factory reset or what?

I'm not an expert but normally you install the ROM and the you wipe data and cache.
1.Reboot into xRecovery and make a back-up of your current ROM. (You'll need a working xRecovery or else it will say Device/SD Card busy).
2.Wipe the following in xRecovery:
Factory Reset (Full wipe)
Wipe Cache Partition
Wipe Dalvik Cache
3.Go to install Custom Zip

I got an backup of my ROM so how do i reboot into xRecovery?
And will all apps be gone? cause i thought u need ROM Manager to install? (or could use)
ROM manager is too unreliable, stick with manual recovery, apps will be gone so back them up first with Titanium Backup and restore them after flashing new rom

titanium backup can be found on the market (but its a paid app)
astro file manager (a free app) can backup your apps (although i recommend titanium backup as it allows you to backup more than just your apps)

You should backup your rom before flashing, this way if anything goes wrong you can go back.
You should always wipe, wipe, wipe.
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Go to Advanced and wipe Dalvik Cache
After the wipe go back and Install zip from sdcard. After install I do another wipe on the Dalvik Cache then fix permissions. Remember Wipe, Wipe, Wipe.
so as long as I do that then I can install a rom over another and delete the previous one while doing so?

I recommend making several backups.
First, make sure you have Clockworkmod installed via nvflash. Then make a backup. Download the backup to your pc for safe keeping (just in case things go wrong).
Use Titanium Backup (free version works, but buy the full one if you like it). Use the batch feature to back up all user apps. Do not back up system apps.
When installing a new rom, especially roms that use different versions of android, you should wipe everything you can except the external sd card (where you keep your backups). Wiping "system" is important.

I flashed CleanRom 5.0 the other day, along with the new Modem and RPM. I was previously stock and rooted ICS. I no longer have the ability to use DLNA, and searching the CleanRom thread in the Developement section it looks like it might be because I did not install the Allshare app when installing the ROM.

I want to go through the install again, but have a few questions, but don't have the authority to post in the ROM thread. Just want to make sure I go through the right steps.
Do I just need to boot into CWM recovery and do a system wipe, cache wipe and delvik cache wipe, then reflash and install the ROM with the options I want?

Does this mean that I should not restore my User Apps & Data that were backed up using Titanium Backup Pro from my original ICS ROM? I can re-download my apps from the Playstore, but it really easy to do with Titanium BU. I restored my User Apps & Data this way after originally flashing CleanRom 5.0, and didn't notice any issues, but want to make sure I do things the right way this time. I did not restore any system apps & data, just user apps & data.
Any help/input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for helping a rookie out!
Boot into CWM, wipe data then flash the ROM the way you want. You don't have to flash RPM or Modem again. Just restore your apps and their data. Don't restore any system data (never should).

I do have a few other questions that I would like to have answered:
With the CleanRom installed, am I going to get prompted for the Verizon OTA updates when they get pushed out? I assume not.
Not saying I want to go back to my stock/rooted ICS which I made a nandroid of, but if I did decide to restore that nandroid, it restores the Modem and RPM that go with that ROM, correct? Or will I need to find and flash these?

The OTA is disabled in CleanROM. Nandroid backup should copy everythng.
Got another question regarding data wiping.

states "Step 5: Wipe Data/Factory reset, then under the "mounts & storage" menu Format System."
In all the threads I have read I see folks state to do a data wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache. I have only seen the "Format System" in this thread.
The reason I ask, I just went through the process of re-flashing CleanRom 5.0 and did the data wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache and when I go into my file explorer, I see folders from before doing a data wipe.
I assumed a "data wipe/factory reset" would delete all this info from the internal sd card bringing it to a clean factory setting. Looking at the "Mount and Storage Menu" in CWM, there is the option "format /system", "format /sdcard" among others.
I guess I would like to know if a "format /system" is required, and would this get rid of old data, or is a "format /sdcard" the right thing to do?
Formatting system is a matter of preference to be honest. You don't realize this but by flashing CleanRom 5, Scrosler (that roms dev) has the rom automatically format /system before it installs. You'll notice it does so if you watch and read it as its installing although it does say this in passing. So to answer your question, it already formatted /system as it installed BUT this isn't the case with every rom.
When you "wipe data" and flash a rom, all you're deleting is the software on the phone itself not the data saved to your internal or external sd card UNLESS you manually select "format sd card" in the process. All your photos/movies/etc are untouched otherwise it would delete all this data and therefore you would not be able to flash anything because your internal storage was already wiped/empty. Make sense?

What do you guys typically do when you try out new ROMs and want to do a clean flash and get back up and running quickly?
1. Restore via Google
(Very slow to redownload everything, doesnt restore everything)
2. Sony Backup/Restore
(Sometimes Restore doesnt work)
3. Titanium Backup
(This is what I currently do, but can also be extremely slow)
4. Titanum Backup (creating update.zip for use in TWRP)
(Backup only seems to allow backup to internal storage so I run out of space)
5. Something Else
I use twrp recovery menu to backup my data, system and kernel
I usually backup to my internal storage since its faster than my mSD
From there i wipe and flash
Or to restore wipe and restore (since cache/art cache wasnt included in the backup)

If you wipe/restore from TWRP, then haven't you've just wiped your brand new ROM and returned back where you started?
My question is specifically for people who try custom ROMs do a backup and restore.

I think i made a bit of a typo there
when going to flash
- backup
- wipe
- flash rom
- flash gapps if needed
when going to restore
- wipe (cache, art cache)
- restore
I'm sorry, I still don't understand.
1. You backup (system, data, etc)
2. wipe
3. Flash rom (which writes new rom to system and data)
4. Then you restore your backup, which now overwrites system and data, thus erasing the new rom you just flashed
I need a way to restore apps and app data while keeping the new rom, otherwise it defeats the purpose
Hello, I rooted almost 20 days ago and I want to change my rom and I have some questions,
Because I don't want to lose ANY data or delete my OS like the last time I tried rooting
so this is what I'm gonna do:
1. take nandroid backup
2. backup all user apps and data using titanium backup
3. move backups to somewhere safe you can get back to (SD card)
4. Download the following files:
LineageOS - Gapps - SU
Of course latest versions
5. go to Recovery and do the following:
1. Wipe (System, Data, Cache)
2. Flash (LineageOS then Gapps then SU)
3. Wipe (dalvik cache, cache)
to make sure everything goes smooth
Reboot system
6. If you fail:
restore from last backup and do it again
7. If you success:
Congratulations.
8. Restore apps and data using titanium backup
So, that's all?
now to the question part.
1. which partition should I backup in twrp for a nandroid backup?
I'm still not sure, I'm guessing all of them
2. does magisk work instead of the LineageOS su add on?
3. what does data partition include if I wipe it?
(I want to know what data Id lose)
4. do I need no Verity opt encrypt or not?
(I used to flash it alongside the SU file)
Please answer the questions, and if you know that something is wrong with the steps I'm gonna do help
1. Whenever I backup I tick everything, better safe than sorry right? Largest my backup has reached is 9gb
2. Magisk does include MagiskSU which you can use in place of another SU
3. If flashing a ROM new then you should wipe system, so you'll basically lose everything that's not on the SD card. After flashing your phone will basically be like you just took it out of the box.
4. I haven't flashed that since the very first time I flashed it and not had any problems with ROM's - but I can't say I'm 100% sure if you're meant to or not
