UnRoot Nexus S - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys...I have a rooted nexus s currently on Miui. I am wishing to go back to stock so I can get the official ICS rom from Google.
I wish to unroot my phone. I will flash back to my stock rom. Now, because I have all my apps, how do I unroot without wiping my phone? Since I will be unrooted titanium won't work. Would superoneclick work?
So my question is......(once I am back on my stock rom) ....how to I unroot without wiping my phone? Would superoneclick unroot button work? Please help. Thanks.

Sorry, I have read that you will lose all your data when you lock or unlock. Make a good backup.

No...I don't mind if it is still unlock. Infact...I would prefer that ...i just simple want to unroot so I can update to the ota ICS when Google release it

OK, then I suppose you just uninstall superuser and re-flash stock images of everything but data. I wonder if you need to restore /etc/install-recovery.sh? Actually renaming that back to original and rebooting should install stock recovery, but flashing the stock recovery image file will also work.

Why don't you keep it rooted and install rom like any other when it is released? So you don't have to wait for it to roll to your device

Why not just stay rooted and wait the few hours till some posts a rooted stock rom? I'm as anxious as anyone but I'm pretty sure I can hold off.....

With the official update you would lose root. As soon as source is available one of the fine developers will more than likely have it ported and rooted for us to enjoy. Just give the sdk a try. You can always flash back to your previous rom

no developer is needed to root ics simple flash the latest superuser from androidsu.com and enjoy

If you flash the latest Nexus S ICS SDK port from Drew Garen, you will not lose root or relock your bootloader. ICS beta 3 and forward comes rooted (with superuser).
Go for it, ICS is a blast, and the port is surprisingly usable. Beta 5 should be out tonight so you could wait and flash that.
already flashed that enjoyed it but i unrooted my phone and lcoked my bootloader going to wait for ics to come out then i will root
How do you unroot and really lock the bootloader? Does it flash the stock rom to? .

But in general I found it very nice.

another problem
Hi,
Another Problem that I faced in that ROM is on the Exchange emails.
I could not configure my exchange email.
It seems that this is the same problem that I faced on my Galaxy tab 10.1
Even the problem of Watsapp is the same.
Regards,
Saydo0o
Are there any floating around, I made the mistake of not backing up my stock rom.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
@saydo0o just wait for beta 5 to be released or wipe dalvik cache
@BigD18t go to the nexus sub forum and go to nexus s developement and find a stock 2.3.6 and flash though recovery

Will the officials OTA ICS update Unroot my Phone?

So the question is in the title. Will the update brick or indoor my phone? If I wanted to install a rooted version does anyone know of a working mirror?
Thanks in advance.

From all the threads in general, it would seem the update does unroot your phone. Also from those threads it would seem flashing a custom recovery and, subsequently, the su zip will give you root back. I don't know of a pre-rooted version out yet.
i just upgraded to ics a little while ago using rom manager, i had to go back to stock 2.3.3 which unrooted my phone but did not lock the phone . I was wondering the same thing and that is how the heck do i root my phone now lol. my phone still shows the unlocked lock on the boot up screen under "Google" but i dont have SU permissions anymore. if I still have su.zip file and cwm can i just use fastboot and flash the img and su.zip ?
What if I don't have my original files to roll back to stock GB? I just downloaded the version Koush put up on his twitter...will that allow me to flash in CWM and update?

Download stock images from from manager then update to 2.3.6 then you can flash the one from koush's twitter.
Root will be lost after update. Currently flashing su.zip wont work. Still trying to figure it out.

We might just have to re*root when they release the info.

Let me ask you also, I'm currently running Alpha13 w/ Francisco.Franco kernel. Is the official that much smoother that I should lose my root?

ICS OTA i9020A

Does anyone from Brazil (or some near country) received the ICS OTA? I'm back to 2.3.6 - just to see how the update is going here - and not even a clue about the OTA. Tried check in, clearing data of Google Framework, etc... I know I can flash the OTA but would be nice to see some better update support here
Thanks!

Ha..ha....ha...... not funny
Did you flash a zip that contains stock kernel, stock rom and stock recovery? And of course did the superuser app appear in the app drawer after first boot?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
hehe im not a noob on it. i have installed the images from google ( https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#soju ) without superuser, so im on stock 2.3.6 with bootloader unlocked only and CWM touch (this shouldnt matter for OTA AFAIK).
EDIT: oops, forgot to delete the install-recovery.sh so im with stock bootloader as well

Hi! I'm from Uruguay.
First of all, lets make it clear that I'm a Big NOOB on android. My Nexus S is my first android phone.
I've a brand new Nexus S, updated with Android 2.3.6. I've tried to update over OTA, but the phone displays that the software is up to date, giving me no chance to update to ICS.
I didn't make any modification in the software of my phone.
Thanks.

Just to be clear, if your gs3 has the official 4.3 on it, you CANNOT unlock the bootloader. You WILL brick your phone if you try.
Safer not to mess with it at this point imho

I definitely appreciate but cyanogrnmod is why I bought the phone. .. I'd there a way to possibly uninstall the update in that case or would I pay much have to wait till cyanogenmod comes or with something to get around Knox? Truthfully a good reputable stock android feel Rom installer would be nice but I'm super noob status when it comes to this and would appreciate any assistance

Nothing you can do right now as far as custom rom. Currently a few folks are working on a patch for safestrap in order to flash custom rom (currently only able to flash custom TW rom). You can follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2618887 to see the status.

I have just received a replacement phone. I have gone about the ways I rooted previously and none of them are working. This did NOT come with 4.3 from the factory, and the 4.3 update is not installed. I reverted back to stock from android recovery, so 4.0.4 is on there right now. But no matter what I do, whether it's the one click method, the GS3 toolkit format, or manually trying to gain root through recovery, nothing works. On the "downloading" screen that you need during use of ODIN, it says "SECURE CHECK FAIL", and it'll either have "boot" after it, or "kernel". Anyone have any ideas? As of this moment I have no working phone. Looking for some help asap. Thank you guys.

Try to Odin flash factory 4.1.2 and see if the secure check turn to "enabled". If it's then try to root again.
I just Odin flashed a stock 4.1.2 ROM actually. It's booting up normally now. It honestly seems like they added a layer of protection on the newly distributed handsets. I will try to go through the normal 1 click method again and see if that works. How would I check if the secure check is still enabled?
Actually, no, it's still 4.0.4 but I'm going to try the same thing just with a different 1 click method.
Looks like the really old way worked. With the ez-unlock and ez-recovery. I had to completely demolish what was there when it was sent to me, though. So anyone who gets a replacement, the best bet is to flash a fresh 4.1.2 ROM or 4.0.4 ROM immediately, boot back up and go from there.

[Q] updating 4.3.3

I've heard about a android 4.3.3 update coming but I've rooted my Nexus 5 recently so I'm still kinda new to all this. I was wondering I would update to this when it comes out while keeping my Kernal and all that good stuff. Thanks!
read the stickies, the ota one will tell you all you need to know. As for me, I'm rooted, stock kernel, and custom recovery. I plan on flashing the next update in recovery.
also why do you want to downgrade to 4.3.3? when launched last november, this phone shipped with 4.4.

Don't be a ****. He obviously meant 4.4.3
Same. I am rooted with framework. So I uninstall framework from the app. Put flash file on nexus 5. Boot into recovery and flash as normal? Do I need to clear data and will I lose root?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There's no need to wipe data. And, yes, you'll loose root, so just need to re-root it again
So I just flash on top of it? And would it not be hard to re-root because it's a new android version?

Once you're updated, you just need to flash the supersu zip again to gain root access.. No, it shouldn't be hard to re-root!
