Get your ROM here
T959VKD1 fully flashable through CWM
For those of you who are not sure if they have CWM of if you have Gingerbread Boot loaders installed follow this guide
GB Ext4 Starter Pack
Or use ODIN and install the ROM
T959VKD1 DeOdexed
If you have any boot loop or boot up problems just go through these steps again and try the ODIN again afterwards.
GB Ext4 Starter Pack
*** Read each step carefully! Do not skip anything (unless your going to use Kies to update to a stock official Rom)!! ***
*** If your going to use kies to go to a stock update then you might want to change step 10) to this
Step 10) Go into the voodoo menu > Disable lagfix and /system lagfix off
You should be able to update using Kies after this. You will lose root capabilities but if you’re looking to go back to stock then that's a given.
Dmx is partially correct. If you want pure, you'll have to odin Kc1 stock rom, which has froyo bootloaders. I think some searching on this forum will grant you a link. I know I've seen it somewhere.

You can't update to KD1 using Kies, it only updates you to KJ6. If you plug your phone onto Kies with KC1, it says phone can't be updated FYI. The closest to KD1 would be deodexed KD1, I can't remember where I found the original odex KD1 but I have the file.

So, apparently I can get the KD1 to flash properly but when I try to update via Samsung Kies Mini it won't recognize my device. Also, when I flash the KC1 I get a boot loop and nowhere do I see anything about removing bootloop in the GB Ext4 link. Also, how do I get rid of the Root when I flash KD1?

What message/error are you getting from Kies? Mine was telling me my device was not registered. I had to flash back to KD1 & register the device @ Samsung. After that I was able to flash to KJ6 with Kies.
Ah, so I need to register my device on the samsung website? My Kies mini was saying my phone isn't recognized so I don't know what else is going on.
Edit: I just NOW realized where the IMEI number was! lol, forgot it was under about phone. Gosh, so silly.

ODIN back to KD1 and make sure you have settings, applications, development, USB debugging turned on. Then try Kies again. Don't worry about root just update with kies. It will all go back to stock.
Samsung galaxy s 4g... Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hello dmx, i have tried to download this file of urs, but the link is dead.... Pls help me, i'm have the same issue with my galaxy s 4g since i ve upgraded it to gingerbread... It kicked me back in every window, text, calls, freezen, reboot.... God bless
If you're wanting to get back to KD1, go grab FBis251's KD1 one-click. You'll probably have to flash it twice & the 2nd time make sure you have "Flash bootloaders" checked. It'll probably boot into recovery & when it does, do a factory reset, wipe the cache, and select reinstall packages. After that you'll be on stock KD1. Make sure you back up your contacts and any other files/apps you want to keep.
Dear Stephen, Thanks for your info. However, I would not wanna flash twice... I will just wait for DMX to reply me if he can get the link working again..... I really wanna do it thru Kies because am sending it back for warranty

DMX is probably not going to get back to you. The file Stephen linked you to is a repackaged version of the file DMX posted a while back. It is completely stock.
It won't matter that you're not flashing it through Kies, since your phone will wind up with the same stock KD1 files anyway. They won't be able to tell the difference if you're sending it back for warranty.
Stephen is the one you want to listen to. He recommended flashing it twice in case you are on Gingerbread and need Froyo bootloaders.
You do not need to be on KD1 to send phone back. KJ6 is an official release and you an send it in using KJ6.

Is any one having a problem with downloading the new firmware using kies mini?
I am able to download all the binaries, my computer goes to the install progress screen, and my phone goes to download, but there is never any progress on the install screen, and after 5 minutes or so, Kies states that the download fails. I also tried the emergency firmware recovery. It does the same thing.
Everything is stock and locked.

Get to stock KD1 first then try again.
I'm seeing the same thing, and I am running stock KD1, other than the fact that it is rooted and has CWM recovery.
Ideas?
Mine bootlooped after the upgrade, and I tried to flash stock kd1 3 times and I finally had to wipe user data and cache before it finally took and then I was able to update via kies
In CWM do a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik in advanced menu, and Go into the voodoo menu > Disable lagfix and /system lagfix off. Reboot and let linda deconvert the file system. Save any personal files off your SSD card and format it. Then try the update again.

How do you delete data and cache? Does this mean all the apps that remember some state will lose it?
Specifically, after the binary download completes I get the error screen from Kies immediately and then a second or 2 later the download screen comes up on the phone, and it stays there until I reboot.
you wipe it in recovery, and you will lose everything but whats on your sd card. pretty much it will be like new state.
I went through the same process and it almost hard brick my phone, it wouldn't turn on or anything for 10 minutes. I had to downgrade to stock KB5 then upgrade using Kies.
This is the rom I flash with prior to upgrading through Kies.

I was also having issues upgrading ith Kies. I was hoping to find a stock KJ6 and flash with ODIN and I did on Piratebay, with instuctions on how to flash and root with Odin.
I have successfully upgraded to GB. Coming from Stock Froyo, rooted.
Having the SGS 4G upgraded to GB is an amazing experience.
Performance increased dramatically, Battery life is ridiculously better (26 hrs unplugged with auto sync on, and battery stats actually work now) lots of polish to TW, but I don't think its 4.0
Heres the link to the torrent. For anyone having issue, this is a great solution.

I'm looking forward to custom ROM! Thanks XDA Members!
Piratebay link blah... Don't flash stock, unless you really like not having a rooted phone. If you want the new official GB, I recomend flashing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351783 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323973 both of which are based on the new GB release.
If you can't get Kies Mini to work, you can always flash the update manually with Odin.
Here is the official update that can be flashed with Odin (you do have to extract first, so you'll need WinRar or 7-zip)

Then I wouldn't do that 2.1 Odin one click.... Look for a stock 2.2 Odin or Heimdall, make sure to read thoroughly too.

I've always just flashed newer than my stock to avoid that problem and it always works well for me, after bricking or when i want to flash a new rom i flash to cappy gingerbread and flash boog kernal to get CWM(clockworkmod). CWM is essential is you plan on flashing to other roms. If you plan on flashing to another rom anyways it doesn't matter which version of stock you load as long as it work so I'd just flash 2.2 or newer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
- this has all the odin 1-click flashable packages for captivate
To do everything you want to do...
flash back to stock, use 2.2 or one of the 2.3 versions. If you plan on flashing to a gingerbread rom (2.3) you'll most likely need the gingerbread bootloaders, if you don't originally flash a odin package with the gingerbread bootloaders you might be asked to install them later depending on what rom you use
incase you don't know odin is the computer program used to flash one click packages, you can find it by searching XDA, one click packages won't require it.
odin has to be open before you plug the usb into the phone putting it into download mode.
to flash to other roms you need CWM (ClockWorkMod-a customized recovery mode for the phone) the thread in this post has links to odin flashable kernals with CWM for each software build. To get CWM flash the respective kernal for the version you use. You'll need odin to flash the new kernal, its essentially stock apart from CWM. In odin select PDA and browse to the kernal zip to flash it.
you can search around XDA for oneclickroots, they will typically be odin or CWM flashable it's quite straight forward. New roms will typically already be rooted so you shouldn't have to root again.
good luck!
Does anyone know which exact ODIN i need to flash to get back to 2.2 from download mode.
You can use adamoutler's uckb2 heimdall one click. That's stock 2.2.
But whitch ODIN do i use.

Unfortunately, there is currently no Odin one-click of stock Froyo (at least that I'm aware of). If you want stock Froyo, you'll need to either piece it together with full Odin, or use the Heimdall One-Click.

Take a look in this post. That should get you the right 3E recovery.
Once you have that, you can either use ROM Manager to install CWM recovery, or see if you can find a kernel with it already baked in and use ODIN to flash the kernel (look for the speedmod kernel).
Or you could flash stock GB, but that updates bootloaders and is a whole different can of worms.

Normally, the answer would be yes. However, as part of the Froyo update, AT&T managed to mess up the recovery menu, meaning that it won't flash unsigned packages. This makes getting CWM basically impossible without doing the steps in that post or flashing a different kernel.
You can root if you want to, but doing the steps in that post first will save you some headache.

I already rooted =/ , should i still try this?
If you have full ODIN, go here, and download the kernel labeled "speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz.tar" at the end of the first post. Open Odin, and in the "PDA" slot, navigate to the .tar file and flash it. That will get you the speedmod kernel, which has CWM, which you need to be able to flash.
Once it's flashed, just hold V+/V-/Power until it reboots, and then you'll be in CWM and can flash MIUI.
I'm assuming you've backed up all your apps with Titanium Backup, right? If you haven't, do that before you do anything else so you don't lose them.

Im not sure if i have "FULL" ODIN. I have the ODIN i just used to install 2.2. Then i rooted it using SUPER1CLICK.
Where do i get the full odin
After painstaking deliberation, they had reached the decision to eat gingerbread. Cautious and deliberate by nature, they opted to install stock 2.3.6 using Kies, presumably the safest choice. KB5 had been having a hard time connecting to the pc via usb with debugging active - no choice was given how to connect to pc, and Kies was not recognizing the phone. Finally bypassing the usb hub allowed Kies to recognize the device, and after a long download, a usb error message flashed up and process failed. Removed phone battery and reboot, all is well but SCREW KIES
Odin from now on
Probably the most creative thing I've seen here all night. Kudos to you my friend!

Unless anyone has any ideas, looks like CWM may be my only chance. How can I upgrade firmware if the method used to update is inoperable? Whenever I go into download mode it will not connect with USB. Instead windows says
"USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached tho this compter has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. For help with this problem, click here."
Great bricked in a factory reset version of kb5 ugh. And this all happened because I tried to use stupid Kies!
Son of a ginger biscuit I figured out why it would not connect it was the 6 FOOT CORD I had hooked up for convenience it WILL NOT GO INTO ODIN OR KIES without the original 3' cord wow
Don't know if it was related to the Kies failure or not but now I am up and running though I cannot flash any .zip with cwm, says signature not verified, and I cannot find a toggle, I have 2.3.6 running now, rooted with super one click zerg, recovery 3e, is there a difference between "rom manager" and "cwm"?? Definitely stay away from ROM Manager, from what I've read. You're getting that signature verification error probably because the phone now has standard recovery vs. CWM. That's an assumption on my part, though. You would have to ODIN one of Drhonk's modded kernels that comes with voodoo/cwm/root to get CWM installed. Within the standard recovery there is not a place to toggle the signature verification.
Considering you're on KJ6 now, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032 and grab drhonk's KJ1 kernel. Put it into the PDA section of ODIN and flash it. Then you'll have CWM.

I had the same issue when I first started. ROM Manager is an app used to download & install custom ROMs, make backups, etc., but it does not work correctly on our phones. "CWM" (as used in the context of the SGS4G) is the custom recovery menu we install to do basically the same things. Anyway, follow stephen_w's instructions to install a custom kernel and that will solve your issues.
Awesome response stephen_w. A link! So much info out there I'm compiling a small database but when I need something it's usually back to search!
I was up and running KJ6, trying to install .zip files from root of sd card using cwm. Did not work - error was E:\ signature verification failed
So, decide to ODIN back to KB5, and try to load cwm, upgrade via cwm, and see if there was a glitch there. Did not work. Upon ODINING back to KB5, download screen has different look, and phone bootloops at Galaxy S logo. I'm about to ODIN flash 2.3.6 again and hope that it works....
This all started because Kies failed (presumably due to length of cord) the KJ6 from Raver that I ODIN'd in I THOUGHT was all stock actually came with CWM and super user preloaded. CWM did not recognize su.apk in the root and was therefore less functional. I fixed permissions and the error went away, but many icons were still greyed out. I wanted to bring back my apps/data from rom manager backup, but my recovery would not work. It would not open the .zip files, and there was no toggle to enable/disable signature verify. This may have been because I did not buy the pay version of CWM, or I don't know how to use it properly. Do you have to somehow flash the recovery to enable CWM? Is there a particular recovery designed for KJ6 SGS4G??
Also, what is the "bootloader update" option for in ODIN?

Weird; I've not had the signature verification error with CWM, only with the standard recovery.
When you went back to KB5 you went from a Gingerbread (GB) ROM to a Froyo ROM. Froyo & GB require different boot loaders so if the ROM you flashed did not have both boot loaders, then you get stuck in a boot loop. Going back to KJ6 will probably get you going again.
This all started because Kies failed (presumably due to length of cord) the KJ6 from Raver that I ODIN'd in I THOUGHT was all stock actually came with CWM and super user preloaded. You might have problems recovering to GB ROMs. This is due to an error in CWM for GB. The problem prevents the /system partition from unmounting. From what I've been told, you have to flash back to a Froyo ROM, like Bali, to do the recovery then flash back to the GB ROM afterward. Not sure if that's your problem here, though, as I've never used ROM Manager.
It would not open the .zip files, and there was no toggle to enable/disable signature verify. This may have been because I did not buy the pay version of CWM, or I don't know how to use it properly. I've never paid for a version of CWM. I've always used one of drhonk's modded kernels to get CWM. Installing the KJ1 kernel I mentioned earlier should do that for you.

My best ODIN advice: Let ODIN decide what needs to be checked and what should not. I've not used the "Phone Bootloader Update" feature. Don't go anywhere near the "Phone EFS Clear", either. I've a feeling that would wipe out your IMEI and other things.
See if you can get Raver's ODIN Stock KJ6 to install, then install drhonk's KJ1 kernel. Once done, reboot into recovery mode and see if it is CWM Red recovery, which is should be. Note the version number at the top and report it back here.
If all of that works well and the right version of CWM is there, then maybe we need to examine what ZIP you're trying to flash. Maybe it's a corrupt file.
Thank you very much, succesfully flashed GB 2.3.6 KJ6, succesfully flashed Drhonks KJ1, had a hard time entering recovery boot mode

UPDATE 20:02 ownloaded "rom manager", re-enabled VOODOO, rebooting. I think I get what's going on here. The file system is being reformatted / partitioned every time voodoo is enabled/disabled. I'm assuming the enabled mode is ext4 partitioning. However, cwm must be installed during fat32 mode, thus the reasoning for enable/disable voodoo. Can't wait to try this out, is it really faster than stock KJ6?? Love the look and feel of the rom already!

Yeah, since being on GB I've been unable to get into recovery unless I use an app like Quick Boot or using ADB from the Android SDK.
Rom Manager and CWM, to my knowledge, are different animals. Good luck getting it going; it sounds like your 95% of the way there.

UPDATE: I want to make a total phone backup (of all my current settings) using rom manager. When I go to "backup current ROM" it says cwm needs to be installed and gives me options for several phones, including the i9000. Should I do this even though cwm red is already installed on my phone? Need a workaround here...
thanks in advance

ROM manager doesn't work on the SGS4G. Your best bet right now is titanium backup, or flashing the bali kernel for 2.2 if you want to make a full backup using cwm recovery.

That blows. Does ODIN recognize it when you plug it back in? If so, just reflash.

ok so long story short i tried to flash my samsung infuse 4g with a rom from this website (ROM][Jellybean] CNA 3.5.0 for Samsung Infuse [PORT] ) i used to have froyo 2.2. all was well and then my phone just stopped working and wouldnt pass boot screen. but i saved my old rom's data with clockworkmod on my sd card. the thing is there are like 5 .tar files and i want to know if i can recover my old rom using odin since i cant even get passed the boot screen??? pls someone help me i'm freaking out, ive been googleing all night and i'm totally burnt out. the files i have are .android_secure.vfat.tar, cache.rfs.tar, data.rfs.tar, efs.rfs.tar, nandroid.md5 and system.rfs.tar...... pls someone show me how to fix my phone
thanks in advance
Don't think you can flash those files, but you should be able to go back to stock.

Follow these instructions. I would use the zip that takes you back to stock with root.
Keep one thing in mind.....you CANNOT go from Froyo to JB.

I keep this thread bookmarked. I have soft bricked my phone so many times, it's not funny!!!

Lack of reading/research caused your error :/
Anyways go back to stock with heimdall.or Odin, get red cwm again and you should be able to restore your backups
If you want to go to jb in the future....then you must first follow go to ics, then jb...you have to have ics before you can flash gb

thanks again to all the comments, yes this was a big Noob mistake, i guess i was just way to excited to jump on the JB wagon. i have since returned to stock froyo using one of the kernals from this site (Stock_Root-Mod3e-UCKD5_Odin), so this is what i have now... although a little phased i still want to give this a second attemp. the rom i wanted to flash was [ROM][JellyBean] CNA 3.5.0 / Nightly 9/20 for Samsung Infuse [PORT]....
just to get things straight so i don't mess up again, i have to flash froyo with ics (is there a specific ics version i should get? on a how to guide on flashing jb i found this info: Entropy512's CM9 Kernel / Blue CWM Recovery 2012.05.02-ODIN-Entropy-CM9-zImage.rar) can i use this one, i prefer odin b/c i've never used heimdall. then after i flash ics then i can flash to jb.... but reading some threads i saw that....
"Currently on stock Froyo:
1) Use Heimdall or Odin to flash stock UCLB3 (GB)
*Reccomendation: Also flash GB bootloaders. See first post for links and warnings.*
2) Flash Entropy's DD kernel to obtain root and red CWM recovery.
Currently on stock GB:
1) Flash Entropy's DD kernel to obtain root and red CWM recovery."
do i have to do this step or can i go forward with the current Stock_Root-Mod3e-UCKD5_Odin that i now have installed....?
secondly, after i install ics, right before i flash jb it states i have to do an aroma prep....then flash jb.....
all flashes are done with clockworkmod and i wipe only cache and dalvik? or is there anything else i have to wipe?
sorry for all the questions, i have read and researched many threads but they are all pretty overwhelmingly full of lots of info.....just wanna get it in order....
thanks again
from froyo to ics i use odin, from odin to jb i use cwm, correct?

Follow all steps, don't skip a thing. As for wiping, wipe Cache, Data, Dalvik, and format /System when going from GB to ICS and ICS to JB. That UCLB3 file is Gingerbread stock and you have to go to gingerbread before you go to ICS.
Also, if you are confident that your phone won't get disconnected from Odin while flashing the UCLB3 file, flash the GB bootloaders while you're at it. If the flash fails while flashing bootloaders then your device is bricked so be sure about Odin before you flash them.

Since you have already used Odin, I would use option "C". The best thing you can do is read everything two or three times. There are also many vids on YouTube that are helpful.
Once you are on GB.....just pick out any ICS ROM an flash it. Once it installs, I wouldn't even bother sitting it up and then you can go to JB.
Th3Bill uses an Aroma installer in his ROMs and the first time you use it, you will have to flash his aroma-prep first.
Hang in there....go slowly...and read. This gets easier and easier the more you do it. I always just d/l the zips to my phone and never even have to mess with the PC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Edit: All of his ROMs for the Infuse can be found and d/l at Jokersax.com
Edit: I just reread your post......once you are on GB, you won't use Odin again. You will use whatever ICS zip to flash your ROM using CWM. Same thing with JB.

okay i think i understand....never has my phone disconnected during a flash with odin, ive always gotten a straight pass...exactly how important are the bootloaders anyways? if failures happen b/c of faulty usb cords, then im good...if bricking happens b/c of "unlucky chance" then id rather avoid it.... either way ill start the whole process tonight after i put the kiddos away so i can concentrate 100%.
thanks again for the tips

Bootloaders prevent Rainbow fault I guess you could call it in ICS. You don't have to flash them but its recommended. If you have any problems, post and you'll get help pretty quick.

so far so good, it seems i need to do the gb bootloader after all...got the rainbow screen....i have my gbbootloader file ready to go....only thing is i want to confirm where i put the file, i've searched and i can only find a procedure for heimdall not odin...do i put the md5 file in PDA or bootloaders?? also it says in heimdall to tick bootloaders, do i do the same in odin??? it also says to flash twice....?? ok im really not risking a hard brick, i'll be patient and wait
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1878458
i'll wait for your answer before i proceed....after this i'll continue to flash ics and then jb...
btw, am i supposed to flash ics twice?? that's what the [GUIDE] How To Flash JB says,
"9. Flash ICS Rom, then ICS Gapps"
but when i tried to flash ics a second time i couldn't (because of rainbow screen, and because it didn't show up in my directory....and where does ICS Gapps show up?
thanks again
If you downloaded the bootloaders linked in the guide, then yes, they go on the pda slot. You only have to flash once.
Heimdall-one click is the one you must flash once before it allows you to flash the bootloaders too.
Edit: to fully install ics you must flash twice, because I believe that what it does when coming from GB is that it just flashes the ics kernel on the first flash, requiring you to run it a second time after rebooting for it to install the complete rom.
Ics gapps are often linked in the rom OPs, although you don't need to flash them if you are headed to JB.

That's odd, I flashed GB bootloaders in Odin from a rooted stock GB. But andros is right about going in the PDA slot. Maybe its just me that didn't have to flash with heimdall first.

Shawn what I meant is that heimdall one-click wont allow you to flash bootloaders the 1st time, so you must run it once and then a 2nd time but with "flash bootloaders" ticked on.
There's no need to use heimdall before flashing them with Odin.

Alright guys, I'm officially a jelly beaner!! Thanks again to all who replied and helped me out, couldn't have done it without your help everything seems to we working fine (with the exception of a few apps that aren't compatible, but they weren't that important ) only issue I have now is that I can't use my data plan and surf the web I configured everything just as I had it before according to my carrier and nothing ...... could it have something to do with the change in modem? When I scan for available network operators I get two options one says :NICMS and the other is just a number 71021... any ideas?
Also, when installing jb in the initial setup it asked which would be the defualt location to save I think I chose the sdcard instead of the emmc directory. ..can I change that setting?
I'm pretty sure you can change the setting, but not sure how. Also, your APNs might be messed up. There's a thread with working APNs. One sec and I'll link it.

yes it always go into download mode easily and sometimes into recovery but freezes very soon...............
Hi
1. Please update your thread topic, no one will help an empty topicless [Q].
2. Go here and follow instructions. This will bring you to Gingerbread (with GB bootloaders) and from there it will be very easy to upgrade.
3. Once you have a rooted GB ROM with CWM recovery 3 and above, you will be able to flash an MTD ICS ROM such as CM9/MIUI/Ultragen and then JB...
already tried that

If you used kies mini you did not try that at all.

I think if you have the kies drivers installed you should try using gremlin remover.

No. You need to read better. The link I sent allows you to upgrade to GB without kies and then further on. Now what you can do is uninstall kies and any other Samsung driver from PC, switch USB port and use heimdall to flash to rooted GB. From there zip flash ICS and then JB...
If you say you don't have boot you probably don't have bootloaders. Please follow instructions and read them well.

You might be getting confused. Please go back to the link provided by itzik2sh and study the guide on using Heimdall. It's fairly lengthy but completely accurate. It will show you how to use Heimdall to get to stock GB, how to use Heimdall to root your phone by flashing AntonX's kernel, how to flash the necessary bootloaders, and even how to get your device into download mode. It's pretty much foolproof...and it works...please do your homework...we will be grading you.

bro i did all heimdall one clicks...stock kj6, stock+root, stock kf1..,,but nothing happened........the only thing worked is i downloaded this starter pack http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765 and installed both but nothing happened...then again i flashed first which is kc1 with pit file then i flashed stock froyo rom downloaded from sammobile.....it boots up but suddenly freezes after 20 or so seconds......i erased to factory but the result was same.......then i flashed bali 3.03 kernel and booted to cwm recovery and tried to flash icbinb.....as required i flashed ext4 converter then immediately as i try to flash icbinb....recovery freezes randomly.....and i m unable to complete process.......may be it has some hardware issue
One final thought...looks like you've tried kies, Odin, & Heimdall. There is the possibility that you might have some conflicting drivers wandering around your computer. Why don't you try another computer (if one's available). Run Heimdall...be sure to follow the instructions on verifying your Java version and Microsoft Visual C. If you are successful, be sure and flash the bootloaders and then the basic-with-a-twist kernel.
Hope this works...I'm out of ideas.
i did so.....but no difference......i think it has some hardware problem.....because even if i m in recovery....it freezes after some tine....be it stock recovery or cwm......also i mentioned earlier that only rom which i was able to boot was stock froyo.....but it also freezes after a couple of minutes. and if i dont turn off during it is frozen it becomes very hot and gives over heat signal at next restart..................so assuming it had a hardware problem i returned back the device
