Market place is up and running

There's only 17 applications in the German Marketplace. That's a bit disappointing, considering they have been advertising their Marketplace among developers for half a year now.
I hope that it gets better soon.
How many are there in other countries?

There appears to be a good few apps on there - more than 17 as I look at it - maybe over 50 (im in the UK).
very few free apps - maybe 3?
I think I will wait until im sure what the situation will be with apps purchased and lost due to ROM flashing. Do you get to download again for free?

In the Netherlands only 4 apps, Microsoft Tag, My Phone, Facebook and 'De Telegraaf' (a Dutch newspaper). A bit disapointing...

Yes, even 50 apps is disappointing. There's some 20-30000 apps for Windows Mobile out there and they could only get 50 of them into their Marketplace within 7 months?
Well... it's not even official yet, so let's wait a bit and see what happens.

Not working for me. The cab downloaded and installed but when trying to launch it searches for an update and informs me:
"We encountered an error while trying to reach the Windows Marketplace server. Would you like to try again?"
Have they switched it off again?

Mine installs but then it cant connect because it says the servers are unavailable. hmmmmm

The market place is still working for me (UK)

The imortant thing is quality not quantity. Obviously it's only just launching and WM isn't as sexy as it used to be, so it was always going to be a quieter launch than we'd hope for. However, I'd rather see an app store with 5,000 quality apps instead of one with 200,000 where there's 542 different "oh look an animated glass of beer" apps, a quarter of the apps are to cover the same OS deficiencies, with ultimately the same core 5,000 quality apps that are now so much harder to find.
That said, WM desperately needs both quality and quantity of games if it and the app store are going to make any real return to consumer level awareness. At least due to the OS's heritage we have an incredibly strong portfolio of productivity apps.

I had that same initial response but it worked when I tried second time around. Hopefully they are trying to load as many apps as possible.
Might be smart to submit an app.

Just installed MS Tag and the install process is pretty slick and pain free and unobtrusive - thought it was going to launch the usual cab installation interface.
One thing though is that it didn't ask where I would like to install to, Memory or SD Card, hmmm.....
EDIT: Tag reader installed to memory - hope this isn't the case for all apps - there should be an option to set install location.

Pardon my ignorance, but how do you install Marketplace on the HD? I am on T-Mobile UK.

Marketplace "copy protection" cracked

I will not do anything with this, or publish how. But you can be assured the "warez" guys from that one site will figure this out within a day or so as well...
As most of you will know I am a software developer by trade, with some commercial offerings from my company.
And then there was Marketplace. For commercial devs, something nice to have. But if you have followed the news, the piracy protection for commercial developers is not much to speak of. See this document http://download.microsoft.com/downl...tplace for Mobile Anti-Piracy White Paper.pdf.
I will refrain from quoting the obvious mistakes in this document, if you give this thing a read, you will notice them soon enough. What it all comes down to is that there is no copy protection, not even at the advanced level, at least if they implement it in the way I interpret from reading that document.
So today I started up Marketplace and it worked. Hurrah. The current level of protection is making sure the CAB files are deleted upon install - which is obviously not a way to protect anything - but even this, I thought, should easily be circumventable.
Now, because I wanted to see how fast it could be done, I went with a hunch instead of doing any investigation. And that hunch worked like charm. It took me less than five minutes to circumvent this "protection", and get the ability to save the CABs the MarketPlace app downloads to a different folder. As the CAB file is the same for every downloader, you could just give this CAB you payed for out to all your friends.
Obviously I will not disclose the method, because that would be working against other commercial developers, and ultimately myself. It's just to let you know how ridiculously easy it is, and to give fair warning to those looking to sell apps on the Marketplace.
So, the moral of the story is... WTF MICROSOFT?
I know firsthand there is no such thing as perfect copy protection, but this is just plain ridiculous.
What we really need is for apps to be able to use our own copy protection schemes... you know, like the good web-based app stores out there.
EDIT: l3v5y has also succeeded in doing something similar, and it seems the WMPowerUser admin also found another easy way to do it... Yay, and it ain't even out yet!

Imagine Microsoft reads this and decides to offset tomorrow's Marketplace launch...
Or even worse, Microsoft launches the Marketplace but developers decide not to submit their apps because they're concerned that their apps get pirated.

Thats what happens when devices aren't locked down.

That sounds bad, but it's really no different to how things are today. Perhaps there are some apps that have more security than either nothing or a serial key, but none that I use have anything more sophisticated.
Even as a developer myself, I'd easily take this over some DRMfest.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, when you buy something from marketplace it's not tied into your username with a password like most apps? Instead, you just buy it and it installs the app, but doesn't give you a cab? Yeah, I don't think it's that hard to work around that and get a cab for yourself. Some of the cheaper apps at Handango are like that. Can you re-download an app onto a new device or if you have to hard reset, and is it free or do you need to buy download protection like form Handango?

Good, copy protection pisses me off, all it does is piss of the genuine users. We have to deal with codes and activation to be legit, while people getting it free, just click here and there, copy a code here and huzah.
Copy protection doesnt work, someone will always find a way around it. Unless its linked to a windows live profile/xbox live profile. Which I can see probably happening when they bring out Zune on mobile phones, which sounds like it might be sooner rather than later!

I'm really surprised by the lack of any drm; what's the point of signing in w/ one's Windows Live account? The easiest thing to do is to associate valid applications w/ one's Window's Live account. That's what itunes does for music at least (I don't know about apps as I don't have an iphone/ipod touch). Of course, what would happen is that an internet connection of some form is needed when the application is first installed, which could become inconvenient.

The truth of the matter is that the percentage or ratio of people who would bother to do this is pretty small. Most WinMo usersbarely even know how to setup e-mail not to mention install a cab file.
Most of the people in this forum already know how and where to get cracked apps or warez if they wanted too. I don't see this so called "flaw" as being an issue to MS or developers.

Must admit that I find it a bit worrying that your not able to make a backup of the applications you buy by taking a copy of the cab file somewhere safe.
After having sent back 4 HTC phones (two different models) in the last 10 months, and having an SD die on me I'd really like to know that I have a backup of anything I've paid for.
Can anyone confirm if its possible to reinstall something you've paid for through the Marketplace app if it gets removed from your phone, or you get another phone? ie if you log into Marketplace with the same Lice ID does it show apps that you've bought but which aren't on the phone your connected with?
If I look at an app that I have installed through Marketplace there is no install button anymore and Marketplace tells me that it is installed... so no obvious way to get the application back...
Not enough free apps on the UK store for me to mess about with really (have installed Shazam trial but don't want to risk uninstaling it just to see what happens).

looks like it keeps track of all apps you purchased.

ow well, I guess it's a matter of time when there will be sites that point to all the cabs available on upload sites and stuff. Just like those sites exists for iphone/ipod (appulo.us for example)
I guess that's what happens when people see that there a lot of apps available on other country stores..

How did you try this? Uninstalling and reinstalling on the same phone or another phone? Or the same phone after a hard reboot / content erase?
I'm just interested to know from what state you can get back to your purchased applicationsand whether is purely your windows live id that connects you to your purchases or if there is some device specific stuff checked as well.

Looking at the Market Place, there are obviously some of the Big Names we all know and love, and I don't see why they would remove protection systems they have in place already, unless it was a MarketPlace requirement.
Personally, I can't say I'm at all impressed with the MarketPlace implementation - it heralds back to the early days of PocketPC. Maybe they're going for lowest common denominator hardware support, but frankly even the relatively poor Android marketplace on Hero is massively better. And the Appstore even more so. And I think Cydia tops most of them!
Let's hope that the MarketPlace at least drives prices down.

I am assuming it's more difficult then just going to \Windows\AppMgr\Install folder while the installer is running and copy the CAB file to another location. This is how I get the CAB files from PC only installers.
I personally use SKTracker a lot. I take a snapshot before, and then during the install and see what has changed. That generally tells me right where any install files/CABs are that I need to grab.

Microsoft does not support your own serial systems. There is no information you can compare runtime vs purchases either, so you can't roll your own. Well ok, you DO actually have device ID information you could use, but that way purchasers can only run the application on the phone they actually bought it on. It is not clear how 're-download' information will be transmitted. If that also transmits a device id, then it is possible to roll your own, though it would be pretty nasty.

If you go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync on your PC, you'll probably find an archive of many things that you installed over active sync.
SK Tools is a good way to re-pack any installed programs into cabs. I would guess that it works with programs from Market Place.

TouchTwit problem

I just installed TouchTwit 1.6 via Marketplace. I added my account, but when i want to 'activate' my account i get the following error:

I really don't know what to do. I also mailed TouchTwit(.net) but i dont get an awnser.

The web exception most likely indicates a problem communicating with a web server (not definitely - just most likely). This problem may just disappear after a while, but it may not. I'm afraid getting in touch with the devs is the only thing you can really do, since this problem is specific to the software.
Just make sure that you can browse the internet okay before trying it again, then be 100% sure that you're using the correct username and password (try logging into the twitter site first, to be sure). Other than that, there really isn't anything you can do.
Although, saying that, since you've only spent £1.69 (or there-abouts), I'd recommend getting Panoramic moTweets instead. It's much better

I from the Netherlands and there was a change in the Internet settings. I need to remove the portal.mmm and now it works good again!
Can i intall TT 1.6 again after a hard reset? I heard something about that Marketplace removes the .cab after install. But there was a solution for that. But prob it's too late now. Or not?

Despite the many knocks that marketplace gets, when it does something right, it really does do it right. You just go back to marketplace and you can reinstall any previously purchased apps from the front page. I have to do it quite regularly. Just 1 click and it installs all the crap I've bought from them lol.

But TouchTwit has not done an update. I have already e-mailed to them but i dont get any awnser. Anybody knows if there comes an update for TouchTwit? I payed for it...

Touch Twit have announced a while back to stop supporting wm 6.5 (they consider it a dead OS) and looking forward to WP 7 (bah!). While Twitter changed the way you login, TT didn.t (and probably will not) release an update to fix this. So the chances to see TT work again on wm 6.5 platform are pretty slim.(you can always bug the developers to fix it...who knows). I suggest you switch over to Panoramic moTweets (they still support the app currently 1.8.5) - payed app or PocketTwit (i.m not sure about this one if it still works) or just use HTC Peep (although it kind of slows down the whole system)

Well, still no reply from touchtwit devs, after lots of mails.
I can accept a "we will not support blah blah" answer from them, but I absolutely won't accept no answer.
And to think that I recently bought this app... and it stopped working less than two weeks afterwards. Really feel stupid for something I paid which I could use for free. Pun intended. That's why I'm so damn furious.
I gotta rethink my "try & buy" policy really hard I suppose...

I also bought it a few months ago but still have no awnser to my emails. I don't think that there is comming an update or something.

touchtwit market place cab removal
kinda new at this ,but i thought that if you have sktools there is an option were you can create a cab file from a program installed on your phone. so if someone were to purchase this tt1.8 you can recreate it using sktools. anyone can correct me if i am wrong

[Q] Problem with Automatic Reinstall of ALL WP7 Apps

I have one Problem with my HTC HD7: I tried lots of Apps and Demos and I deinstalled a bunch of it after that. But now after a few days I see all my deinstalled apps back !!! I don´t want them back, but Marketplace loads them down again without a question to me. How can I disable this ? I´reinstalled my phone 3 times with hardreset, no chance. And I don´t want to use a new live account, because I bought some apps and don´t want them lost. any ideas ?

lol! I find the situation kind of funny.
What I do is just uninstall them again on my device. I think it has got to do with the syncing on Zune. Don't know really, I have no idea. & yes, it would be nice if there's someone out there who knows exactly what to do. Share please.

Suck big time
Finally installed a sd card in my Focus(after 2 months). MS has got to come with a better way. Zune put about four of the fifteen apps I had back on the phone. When I used Zune Marketplace to put the others on there, I got the message alreay purchase. So what put it on the damn phone! I go to the phone marketplace. Search for the apps, when I try to download them I get a message saying tap here. It says uses Wi-Fi or your PC to download. Don't have Wi-Fi and when I tried to install from PC nothing happened. I really loved WP7 until today. Unless I go sit outside a McDonald's I won't get my apps back.

agreed that this needs to be fixed. you can delete downloaded songs through zune, but not apps.

[Q] Apps in defferent Marketplace regions

I decided to give WP7 one more try. I tried it before Mango was relased. I live in Danmark and I noticed that there are not so many interesting apps in Danish Marketplace. So i wanted to ask if there are other apps in other Marketplace regions e.g. if i change the region to US will there be more avaible apps? If yes which Marketplace region has most apps?

okeyus, that is just a matter of time. Same thing about the brazilian marketplace, which had nothing worthy when introduced but is now growing steadily.
In the meantime you can create a "foreign" Live ID, ie, another one which is set up to some other region, such as USA. You'll have to hard reset your phone to change your primary ID (the first ID set up on your phone controls which marketplace you'll access). After that you can add your main ID to retrieve your contacts, email, etc.
The only drawback with this method is that you can't buy anything - the country is pre-selected whenever you're going to add your credit card details and can't be changed; if you proceed, the purchase will fail because the card info won't match. You can, however, download any free or trial apps you want.

I know that. I have an US account which I created when I installed WP7 for the first time. But now i wanted to check how does Marketplace looks in Danmark and i didn't know if it's worth to switch to the US region again. I installed some apps, customized WP7 and just didn't wanted to do it again if Marketplace would be the same for US as for DK. So you are saying that at this moment there are most apps in the US Marketplace?
The other drawback is that I will not be able to use Messenger in the Messaging tab if i chose my US account. I read that the included Messenger in the Messaging tab is only for your main account. So if i have my MSN on my Danish account and I will use US account as primary one I will not be able to use that MSN tab from Danish account. (Pretty confusing but i didn't know how to explain that)

You can download an app called "Local Market Search", which will let you see the apps in other marketplaces. You won't, however, be able to download an app which is not available for your current marketplace.
The US marketplace was the first one so, yes, I believe it is the one that has the most apps. However, that is just a matter of time, as I believe there is no incentive for a developer to not sell their apps on more marketplaces.

Just did it and i must say that I'm impressed. There are a lot more apps. Im gonna stay on WP7 now. I didn't knew that there is so big difference between WP7 and WP7 Mango. It's just so much better and more user friendly now. I'm very impressed.

I'm not sure... Have you updated to Mango or not? If not, then you should immediately or as soon as possible Lots of new features. Plus there's another update in the works (Tango, I believe). It'll get better every time.

Yes, I am on Mango. That's what i said. I have tried WP7 before Mango was relased and i didn't liked it. But now with all the Mango features it's just awesome and fits me perfectly. That's why i said that I will stay on Mango. But i like games from Android and have only 4GB card so i just ordered 16GB class 10 card so I can use WP7 daily and Android with lots of games when i need it
